Small Space, Big Flavor in North Beach While walking around North Beach and Chinatown, I decided to get some sushi. A quick online search provided a list of places I had already tried, but I came across DJ Sushi. I remembered walking by this restaurant a few times, but I had never gone in to try it. I was the only guest when I arrived at the restaurant, so I decided to dine in. As I walked in, I noticed a long hallway. On the left side was a small seating area, and the kitchen was on the right. The main dining area was straight ahead, and I was surprised that it was a very small but well-organized and clean space. The hostess who greeted me was very nice and offered me some edamame to snack on while I reviewed the menu. I started with miso soup, which was delicious, and then opted for the Omakase, an eight-piece nigiri combo chosen by the chef. It was also very fresh and delicious. I was really happy with my choices. Despite my desire for dessert, especially the mochi and cheesecake, I decided to skip the extra calories. True, DJ Sushi is located in a less desirable part of North Beach, but the food quality there is very high, and the service is pretty good. Do not let the unusual space (for a restaurant) impact you negatively when you walk in. This is an old building in an old area of North Beach, and I assume it was a residential building at some point. If you are craving delicious and fresh sushi while visiting North Beach, consider DJ Sushi one of your top options. You will not be disappointed.

Food. Attention to details lacking? Very disappointed as I ordered with specific instructions of no onions whatsoever and it came loaded with onions. More onions than meat!!! I really wanted to rate this high as the sushi was good. Had to throw it away due to allergies. Waste.

    Sushi roll + 6-piece gyoza + 2 mochi

I ordered takeout, and the sushi tasted fine. It wasn't particularly amazing, but it wasn't bad in any way. I think the gyoza was a little bit not super fried by the time I got it. But in general, I didn't think the flavor inside was that different. I felt like it's something that I could have just heated up from a Trader Joe's bag on my own. The mochi was actually quite good. The only unfortunate part was that when I caught it, the ice cream was already melted, but I think that was still okay for mine, but I definitely tasted better. In total, the meal came out to $30 plus a $5 tip, so it was pretty reasonably affordable. The takeout service was pretty quick because I actually got my food about 20 minutes after ordering it. I can't speak to ambiance because I didn't eat in person, but I have heard good things.

Ordered through Doordash for lunch. It is a bit expensive, but food is good. Not sure I would order again due to sushi prices and amount of food, but glad I ordered at least once. The pumpkin coquettes are delicious and the best I've tasted with a slightly spicy mayo. The cherry blossom roll was fine. Was disappointed that I ate it too quickly. Could have eaten double since it wasn't too big.

I stopped at DJ sushi for lunch and the atmosphere iwas cute, cozy and unassuming. The server greeted me with a smile and told me briefly about the menu. I ordered the lion King roll and shrimp Tempura classic roll. The lion King role was delicious and fresh. I would order this again!. The flavors were amazing! The shrimp tempura roll was good also. I will be back to check out happy hour. You definitely get a bang for your buck because the prices are reasonable and the portions are generous!

Got delivery today in the rainy weather, everything was tasty: Rainbow roll, 4 seasons roll, and chicken teriyaki skewers. Quality fish, soft rice, only feedback is I wish they used up less sauce on the 4 seasons roll and less teriyaki sauce on the chicken skewers (these arrived cold so just popped them in the air fryer for a minutes and it worked wonders). Was a bit salty but still very delicious, would order from again.

The ramen was rich, comforting, and packed with flavor. The tonkotsu broth was creamy and savory without feeling overly heavy, and the noodles had a great texture. The pork belly was tender, flavorful, and melted in my mouth, making every bite satisfying. The buns were soft, fluffy, and a great addition to the meal. The filling was flavorful and paired perfectly with the pillowy bun, making them an easy favorite. The karaage was also a standout. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and perfectly seasoned, it made for a great side to pair with the ramen. Service was friendly and efficient, and the staff kept things moving smoothly despite the restaurant being busy. The vibe is lively and energetic, with the feel of a popular ramen shop that's always buzzing with customers. It's casual, welcoming, and a great place to enjoy a comforting bowl of ramen. Overall, a fantastic spot for authentic tonkotsu ramen and delicious Japanese comfort food. I'd happily return whenever I'm craving a rich bowl of ramen.

Once we got closer to the front, the host came by to hand us menus so we knew what to order as soon as we were seated. The restaurant is pretty small so the dining experience feels a little hectic. If you're looking for a calm, relaxing place to eat, I wouldn't say this is the place. It's sort of an "in and out" situation. I ordered the spicy G.K.O. So so delicious. The flavors really jump out at you. The broth is so cozy and smooth. The portion was decent and the ingredients felt proportional. My boyfriend ordered the vegan Miso. He's not a huge fan of ramen and he actually finished his bowl. He gave it a big thumbs up.

My only real complaint was the seating arrangement. My wife and I were seated at a shared counter-style table that was divided by a glass partition. While the partition provided some separation, I could still clearly see the people sitting directly across from us, along with all the eating noises and conversations. I personally prefer a little more privacy while dining, so that took away from the experience. I won't comment on the wait time because that's pretty normal for popular restaurants in San Francisco. The highlight of the meal was definitely the A5 Wagyu Ramen. It was absolutely delicious and worth ordering. The flavors were amazing, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting. Overall, the food was outstanding, and despite the seating arrangement, I would gladly return.

The wait for a table was 20 mins or we can share a large table with random people and be seated immediately. We were hungry. We went with the large shared table. Pleasantly, there was more than enough room. There were at least 1-2 seats in between the three groups on each side that were there- a solo diner, a small family of 3, and my group of 4. I ordered the Karaka Spicy, my bf ordered Akamaru Modern, his sister ordered Miso, and I don't remember what her friend got- I think it was also Karaka spicy. My bf and I ordered the Treasure plate on the side to share and a side of spicy paste because I know Japanese spicy is barely spicy (from someone who grew up eating SEA spicy). Karaka Spicy had a nicely balance tonkotsu mouth feel and pork flavor. Broth was a little salty. I was correct to assume that it wasn't spicy because I used half of the side of spicy paste and I still didn't think it was spicy enough. Chashu was cooked fine. Notes: - I wished I would've asked if they could swap the thin noodles for the thick ones. I love the chew thicker noodles provide. - Noodles were cooked al dente. Akamaru Modern tasted very similar to Karaka spicy without the spicy. My bf used the other half of the spicy paste as dip for his toppings. He enjoyed it. Miso was a lighter broth (obvi) with a good umami flavor and was not watered down. Solid. She loved it. I have never seen her finish a whole bowl of ramen before. There was a server in training that took our order with the help of the trainer- he did great. Staff was attentive with our waters. Bussers were also quick to notice and remove empty plates and bowls regularly making for an easy clean up after we leave and kept the shared table clutter free. Interior was modern, but casual. They had an expansive menu with vegetarian choices, sushi, buns, karage, etc. and a surprisingly large array of alcohol. I would def like to be back to try some drinks.

The ramen is served in large bowls, which looks impressive at first, but the actual portion of noodles and toppings felt underwhelming for the price. At that price point, I expected more both in quantity and flavor. We ordered the Dragon Tantan ramen, which the menu describes as spicy. It wasn't spicy at all. We asked our waiter if we could have a little more heat, and he nodded and brought over a tiny dipping-bowl-sized portion of some red paste with no explanation. There was no mention that it would cost extra. After finishing our meal, we were surprised to see a $5 charge on the bill for the "extra spice." We genuinely thought it was complimentary, and if it wasn't, that absolutely should have been communicated before serving it. The lack of transparency was disappointing and unnecessary. Overall: mid food, mid service, and not worth the price -- especially during such an exciting weekend in the city. Unfortunately, we won't be coming back.

I've been to plenty of Japanese/Ramen spots and I've been running into the issue where I say I have a soy allegry and there is an assumption that I have a gluten issue (I do not have a gluten issue). I noticed yelp said they have soy-free options and thus called on Friday thinking it might be a bad idea as they're usually busy..
