My girlfriend and I showed up at 4:30pm on a Saturday night and there was already a dozen people waiting outside to snag a coveted table. We don't have reservations, however, we were able to score a pair of barstools right away before both levels of the restaurant filled to capacity. The average wait time for over an hour by 5pm and if you didn't have reservations, you might be out of luck, unless you manifest the Peking Duck! We were greeted by a wonderful lovely server who welcomed us and mentioned that there was still some Peking Duck available if we were interested. As we flipped through the colorful menu of options, we started off with a few drinks: a Sapporo for myself and a Lychee Mojito for my date. We settled in a few signature items: Half of a Peking Duck (perfect for us), Beijing Dalu Noodles, Black Truffle Xiao Long Bao and Beijing Pot Stickers. The atmosphere was buzzing, lots of conversation, hungry patrons and an elaborated tea service experience from a well-trained tea merchant who delighted audiences with Instagram-worthy pictures and videos of his craft. The drinks arrived first and they were delicious. The food came out fast and furious, led by the chef in a tall white hat, carving nonstop near the bar with servers rushing out duck orders to hungry customers, complete with pancakes and tantalizing accoutrements. The noodles arrived in a wk deregulated colorful large bowl, followed by the Long Bao and Potstickers. First of all, the duck is the star of the show. Absolutely incredible. Slightly crispy exterior with a tender, juicy middle that melts in your mouth. It truly is five star. The noodles were amazing. Full of mushrooms and spices, the thick, homemade dish was amazing. The Black Truffle Bao was also delicious. We went with the 8-piece version which were steamed to perfection snd had a great combination of pork a d black truffle mixture. Finally, the pork-based Pot Stickers were slightly crispy outside and tender on the inside. Not the best I have had, but nonetheless, tasty. The overall experience was truly wonderful. The staff, presentation, decor, and of course, the food itself was definitely worth the hype. Located in the heart of Chinatown, Z&Y Peking Duck is one of the great gems of San Francisco. The pricing is on par for other quality restaurants in the city, with a two-person dinner of this quality coming in under two hundred dollars (including tip). We have our favorite dim sum spot in the South Bay, but we had yet to find a favorite in San Francisco, until now. There's a very famous one in the City where we used to dine, but our last visit left us disappointed. So, we had our fingers crossed for Harborview. Conveniently located in Embarcadero 4, Harborview is next to the Hyatt Regency, just steps from Embarcadero Plaza and directly across the street from the Ferry Building. If you're stopping by for the bar only, and yes, they have Happy Hour (Tuesday-Friday, 4:00-7:00pm), enter from the second floor. There are escalators and an elevator inside the Embarcadero 4 building, which are also convenient options if you're unable to navigate the circular staircase leading to the dining room. The main dining room entrance is on the first floor, with the courtyard facing Drumm Street. After checking in, you'll be guided upstairs to your table. We had made reservations, so our wait was minimal. When our table for two was ready, we made our way through the bustling main dining room to the outdoor patio in the back. Every table was shaded by an array of large, tan umbrellas, making the patio especially inviting on such a beautiful day. When it comes to dim sum, we tend to order the same familiar dishes. We do this intentionally, mainly so we can compare how each restaurant interprets these classic favorites. We ordered: * Baked BBQ pork buns with crunchy sugar crust ~ This is their signature dish, and it was delectable. Michelin Bib Gourmand recipient Tim Ho Wan in Hong Kong makes the benchmark version of this style of bun, but Harborview serves up a very tasty one of its own. * Shrimp har gow dumplings ~ Delicious, with that satisfying, delicate crunch of shrimp when cooked just right. * Glutinous rice and assorted meat wrapped in lotus leaf ~ Well-seasoned, fragrant and wonderfully moist. * Jellyfish cold plate ~ If a restaurant has this on the menu, I'm ordering it. Harborview prepares it beautifully, with just the right amount of spicy kick and that irresistible, crunchy texture that makes jellyfish so enjoyable, somewhat reminiscent of wood ear mushrooms. * Steamed chicken feet with black bean sauce ~ Exceptionally savory and tender. My favorite preparation includes slices of fresh green jalapeño, whereas this version came with red chili peppers. It still had plenty of flavor and heat. * Barbecued pork rice flour rolls * Black truffle & Kurobuta pork dumplings ~ Din Tai Fung still holds the title for my favorite XLBs, but these were a tasty rendition. Overall, every dish was very good. The restaurant was packed and clearly in full swing, yet the service remained attentive and efficient. Plenty of servers were circulating throughout the dining area, so whenever we needed something, it arrived almost immediately. With the gorgeous weather, dining on the patio was the perfect choice.
