Tucked away in a remote corner of a Rolando neighborhood strip mall across from Horace Mann Middle School is where you will find this boba tea shop. The owners of Happytime Tea were doing some internal renovation when I visited with all of the inside chairs and tables pushed off to one side of the room. Electric saws were in action as the outdoor patio was also under construction. It seemed to be a lot of space for a business that focused on beverages, sweet crepes, and an acai bowl. Two menu screens hung from behind the service counter. There were close to 70 different offerings of drinks. What struck me was how affordable the prices were at $4.75 (small) and $5.50 (large) for the milk and flavored teas. The toppings were $0.75 each except for crystal boba which cost $1. I picked the first flavored tea on the list which was Pineapple along with the addition of regular boba pearls. That flavor isn't as common as you would think at a place like this. There was no pulp in the tea, however the pearl quality was very soft which I appreciated. The business hours are not as late as the nearby competition with a closing time of 7 pm (even 5 pm on Saturday and Monday), but they do open early at either 7 or 8 am. That's good for the early birds who may want coffee and not so much for a student who wants to study and hang out at night.

This place has the best Vietnamese coffee in all of San Diego. It truly brings back the nostalgic feeling of Viet Nam when you take a sip. That how you know it authentic. On top of all, the vibe of this place has the best vibe on the weekends as people love to gather here to hang

Been here since i was in 6th grade, the place and owner is nice overall. I love the crepes here, it's not too much or too little of everything for my taste

Was really craving milk tea so decided to come here and try somewhere new. I always get a taro milk tea smoothie whenever I try a new place so I can compare. However, the taro from here wasn't my favorite. The flavor just wasn't strong enough for me. My friend got a melon milk tea smoothie and it was delicious! Seems like this place is either a hit or miss depending on what flavor you get. Worth trying again, but it wouldn't be my first choice.

2022 review update: Great place to get some work done as there's tons of seating and hidden in a corner. With the karaoke stage and lottery ticket signs, this is your classic Vietnamese joint. I will definitely keep coming back for the workspace, drinks, and WiFi! The Vietnamese coffee ($6.25) was pretty on the pricey side and not your traditional drip coffee with condense milk. It is mixed with added creamer I believe, I couldn't finish the drink lol. It could be because I came in at 2pm. I hope it stays this empty, a quiet non-packed coffee location is hard to find nowadays. Lots of parking!!

7$ Milktea but using powder to make it. That's so cheap. How can your shop still survive? Might as well just serve coffee and lottery .

    Thai tea... No boba!

Hidden gem alert! Literally! This location is tucked away all the way in the back of this old shopping center. I would never have guessed to come here because there's really not many stores I would visit anymore. I used to come to this center all the time because of Ly's Garden (they were my go to Chinese bbq pork and roast pork place) but sadly they have since closed and its a live king crab place. I am in love with their Thai tea!!! I was never a Thai tea drinker because apparently I never had a good one! It was always too bitter, powdery, too strong, just tasted bad... but not here! The Thai tea is smooth, rich in flavor, perfect mix of milk and I add whip cream to top it off. For all the boba lovers out there (not me) you can get your boba on too! Le is the owner and super friendly! Broke my heart that during the initial three months of the pandemic they were closed. Yes I was missing getting my Thai tea fix on the weekend... but more importantly I was worried this small business was not going to survive! So many hidden treasures and long time fixtures are not making it during the shutdown and I didn't want Happytime to be one of them! They're open again and with plenty of outdoor seating and parking! Back to the Thai tea.... Why is it sooooo good?!? The Thai tea is brewed fresh daily. He only uses the best Thai tea and it's the most popular drink here! I usually get it with ice but It's been so hot lately I asked if that was possible to get it blended (so my ice doesn't melt as fast) and yes you can!!! Just when I didn't think it could get any better, it does! Stop by and support this small business! Tons of teas, milk drinks, blended fruit drinks, boba and of course my one and only fav... the Thai tea! Enjoy!!! :)

This is probably in the top worst boba spots in San Diego unfortunately. My friends and I came here on a weekend day and it was practically empty. At least there was a nice large parking lot! The entrance is awkwardly located at the side of the building and the venue of this place is actually quite large. The owner completely ignored us as we entered and proceeded to ignore us even as we waited patiently at the register. In addition, this place was super hot and stuffy on such a hot day and the owner refused to turn on any of the fans that were in his establishment, clearly in order to try to save money. Now in terms of the drinks, I got the jasmine milk tea. First of all, when it came out it was a weird green color, which usually is not the color of jasmine milk tea. Additionally, the flavor tasted very off and artificial. In addition to bad service and bad environment, the drink was also very below average. I would not come here again.

I was supposed to meet my friend here after I finished shopping, but we didn't know that they so early! By the time I would arrive, the place would be closed. My friend had just arrived, so she put me on the phone with a worker so that I could place my order LOL. I ended up getting the passion fruit tea with crystal boba. I asked for it to be less sweet, but it was still really sweet. Not sure if they forgot to adjust the sweetness level or if their drinks are normally this sugary, but I'll most likely try something else next time. My friend loves the Thai tea drinks here and it was good, but nothing special about it. Happytime Tea also hosts parties at their tea shop, so I remember coming here for a kid's birthday party a few years ago. They let you decorate the place and bring in your own food too! FYI, the shop is also located in the back corner of the parking lot, so it may be a bit hard to find.

Coconut Ice Blend with Almond Milk and Boba

Randomly stumbled upon this spot when picking up some dinner, and I am very glad I did! This place is pretty hidden away in a shopping center, and I believe you have to park a bit far away from it, but I can be wrong. They have a bunch of flavors to choose from which is super cool and there is a lot of seating which is perfect if you are going with a big group. The people running the shop were very sweet and helped accommodate my drink since I don't drink whole milk. I tried the Coconut Ice Blend with Almond Milk and Boba, and it was very yummy. It was the perfect amount of sweetness and I love the creamy coconut flavor. I can't wait to go back and try more drinks!

Such a cute little shop run by a small family. There's plenty of space in the parking lot and in the restaurant. A perfect place to get work done or even sit and chill with friends. We got the thai tea with boba and it did not disappoint. We didn't want it too sweet and the owner said it was pre-sweetened but they tried to make adjustments for us! Super awesome customer service!! Please support them! Their drinks are good too

The staff was warm and welcoming from the moment I walked in. Parking was another pleasant surprise. I originally drove past thinking I'd have to search for street parking, but they actually have a shared lot. It made stopping in a lot easier than I expected. I ordered the On Cloud 9, which is a jasmine green milk tea with cheese foam and brown sugar boba. The drink itself was enjoyable. The jasmine wasn't overpowering, which let the cheese foam stand out without completely taking over the drink. I also liked that the sweetness of the brown sugar boba balanced the slight saltiness from the foam. Flavor-wise, I'd say it held its own against other boba shops in San Diego. The only thing that held it back was the boba. It had almost no chew left. Instead of adding texture, it kind of disappeared after one bite because it was so soft. Boba is one of those toppings that can completely change a drink. Even with that, I'd still come back. The menu has way too many interesting drinks to judge the shop off one order. If the boba had been fresher, this easily could've been one of those drinks I'd order again. I think next time I'd branch out and try something from their Limited Series instead.

Compared to the name of the spot, the interior felt like it belonged to a night time sushi spot. I'm not sure if they are allowed to repaint the interior, but changing the black/dark blue walls to something more bright would open up the space a little more-- it is a small place, but felt even smaller with the design choice. The menu was organized, but it seems like they were out of a few items in the morning as they didn't have mini pearls--only regular. And for some reason, you couldn't change the sweetness level on the drink...or maybe it just related to the drink I chose? Not sure, it was my first time there. The worker was nice & patient. Although for not having many people in the shop, I hope they could take the time to perfect their boba. It was VERY clumpy and not good-- texturally and taste wise. It didn't have that rich brown sugar taste and it was very gooey and chewy (not in a good way). They did give a good amount of boba, but I feel most people would toss it out because of the bad quality. Which would be a waste of money. To drink, I chose the Hokkaido Milk Tea with Pearls. I wanted to do 50 or 75% sweet but I guess since this is a caramel noted milk tea, it isn't possible. I think the tea was ok. I would order something else next time. My friend had the Okinawa Milk Tea with Pearls, I'm unsure if they asked for a certain sweetness level or not. They said the tea was good, but the pearls weren't good. Something to note, I charged the drinks on my card and rather than saying Sayaka Tea, it said Sharetea...interesting. I wonder if they rebranded themselves or ?? Each drinks were around ~$7-8 ish! I'll give them another try, I hope the boba will be better the next time around and I'll be allowed to change the sweetness. If not, I'll be heading a little further down the street as this tea spot may not be for me!

This time, we were lucky enough as the line wasn't too long. I absolutely loved the chic, minimalist aesthetic of the place. It was clean, bright and lively inside. The staff who helped us was very friendly and enthusiastically explained differences in drinks as it was our first time trying their stuff. Service was also fairly quick. What we tried: Black Jade Milk Tea Creamomo with B&W Boba Cocoa Latte Creamomo with Brown Sugar Boba Matcha Cortado Creamomo The drink that stood out to me the most was the Cocoa Latte Creamomo--it tasted like the perfect and most indulgent iced chocolate drink you'll ever have in your life and not get sick of it. The cheese foam on top just added more depth and complexity to the flavor of the drink. We asked for the sugar level to be at 80% and thought that sweetness was just right. Another thing of note--if you are a matcha lover, please, for the love of everything holy, get their Matcha Cortado. We got ours creamomo style and it was DIVINE. The matcha flavor was bold and intense without the drink getting overly earthy or bitter. We chose to have this drink at 100% sugar level and it was *perfection*. Their boba was also pretty much how you'd want your boba in every bubble tea drink to be--soft and chewy without that irritatingly hard center. Chef's. Kiss. Overall, we were incredibly happy and buzzing after getting to try this place. We're already itching to go back and get more!!

From the very beginning, I was blown away by the level of care and attention I received. The owner, Le, personally answered my call and guided me through the menu with a level of detail and warmth that immediately put me at ease. I have specific safety needs and allergies, and she handled everything with such grace and professionalism. She was clear, direct, and supported me through every action of the process without ever overwhelming me. What I deeply appreciated out most was how naturally she accommodated my needs. There wasn't a moment where I felt like an inconvenience. Instead, I felt genuinely cared for. Le's passion for her craft is unmistakable. She shared how she has studied flavors extensively, traveling to Vietnam and Taiwan to deepen her understanding of traditional techniques and flavor profiles. That dedication shines through in every sip. She explained how she carefully develops her own recipes, blending cultural influences with precision and creativity. Even the boba itself is made fresh every morning, which makes a huge difference. I can taste the quality, texture, and freshness immediately. I started with the taro milk tea (with almond milk due to my allergies), and it was absolutely phenomenal. The drink was luxuriously creamy with a silky, smooth texture that coated the palate in the most satisfying way. The taro flavor was rich and earthy with a subtle nuttiness, balanced by a gentle sweetness that never became overpowering. Just when it seemed like it might lean too sweet, the creaminess would round everything out perfectly, creating a beautifully harmonious flavor profile. Adding the boba elevated the experience even more. The pearls were soft yet chewy, with just the right amount of bounce, and carried a delicate sweetness that complemented the drink rather than competing with it. It was, without question, the best taro milk tea I've ever had. Next, I tried the "Over the Rainbow," and it was just as impressive in a completely different way. This drink was bright, vibrant, and incredibly refreshing. The tartness of the lemonade provided a crisp, zesty backbone, while the popping boba added bursts of sweetness that danced across the tongue. Each sip was layered and dynamic, cool, tangy, sweet, and slightly effervescent in feeling. Visually, it was stunning as well, with beautiful, shifting colors that made the experience feel almost magical. It was as much a feast for the eyes as it was for the taste buds. Both drinks were so good that I drank them down almost immediately! I didn't even think to take a photo! I even found myself savoring the melted ice afterward just to enjoy every last trace of flavor, which shares a lot about the quality and balance of the drinks. To top it all off, Analise, who helped me at checkout, was equally kind and accommodating. She continued the same level of care and attentiveness, making sure my safety needs were respected and that I felt comfortable throughout the entire experience. Boba Monkey has truly set a new standard for me. Between the exceptional quality of the drinks, the depth of flavor, the cultural authenticity, and the genuine kindness of the staff, this place is in a league of its own. If I could give them a billion stars, I absolutely would. Best drinks, best boba, and one of the best customer service experiences I've ever had.

I always only get the Honeydew Bubble at 50% sugar with light boba. Tell me why it still tastes like 100% sugar? The same thing happened with the Mango Sago, which was wayyy too sweet. And what makes it even more disappointing is that they've raised their prices. One drink is now just under $10, so when I'm paying that much for ONE drink, I expect the recipe and quality to be consistent every time. Another thing that really bothers me is seeing the girls working with their hair completely down. It's honestly pretty off-putting when you're handling food and drinks, and I really hope the team is being properly trained in food safety and hygiene standards. I genuinely love Urban Bubble, which is why this is so disappointing. Please adjust the sugar levels or train the team to follow the recipes more consistently! There is only ONE person who consistently makes my drinks perfectly every time. Hopefully he reads this and knows exactly who he is lol.

I really love their pink decoration inside, it seems like they kinda went all out with pink. You can order from the kiosk and they offer more than Boba tea here. I've tried several of their mochi donut which it used to be more popular, as well as their Boba tea. I do have to say they charge for everything they can get, including charging for less ice. For mochi doughnut I give them three out of five it's not really memorable, but it's also not that bad. For their Boba tea, I will give them four out of five. We've been here several times and they are consistent with Boba texture every time. However, they are very stingy with their Boba proportion.

The space is cute, clean, and has a lot of potential. The menu is honestly one of the strongest parts. They have milk teas, cheese teas, Vietnamese coffee, fruit teas, smoothies, blended drinks, hot lattes, and even mochi donuts. There are so many options that it's easy to find something that sounds good. Ordering is done through a kiosk, so customer interaction is pretty minimal. You place your order, wait for your name to be called, and pick up your drinks from the counter. This visit, I ordered the Chizu Taro Milk Tea with boba at half sweetness. We also got the Taro Cream Vietnamese Coffee. The Vietnamese coffee was actually pretty good. It had that strong coffee flavor you'd expect, and the taro cream added a nice sweetness without completely covering up the coffee. The Chizu Taro Milk Tea, unfortunately, was not it. I understand that lowering the sweetness can sometimes affect the flavor, but this tasted more like lightly flavored milk than taro. It felt watered down and didn't really have the rich taro flavor I was hoping for. The biggest disappointment was the boba. As someone who used to work at a boba shop, the texture immediately stood out to me. Instead of being chewy, it was mushy. It reminded me of boba that's been sitting in syrup for too long and has started to lose its texture. It also wasn't particularly sweet, so it didn't really add much to the drink. I really wanted this place to become my regular boba spot, but after several visits, I'm starting to think it just might not be for me.
