Stylish coffee shop with incredible Baklava! Okay, I have to admit I had a bit of a Baklava craving, so I went to Google Maps and searched accordingly. Luckily, Haraz was within a short walking distance from my office. And so off I went on a journey. I was not disappointed. When I stepped into the cafe, it was lunch time - not as crowded as you would expect. I loved the stylish design of the cafe. I was warmly greeted by the staff, they were busy but took the time to greet me and take my order. I tried three types of baklava - the Qatayef, Havuc, and roll pistachio. This is a lively coffee shop in the heart of SoHo. It was quite busy on New Year's Day. They have lots of seating, but it might be a bit of a wait for a table. It is quite casual in that you can pull tables together and mix and match chairs to suit your party size. I ordered the Adeni / Karak chai. You can order it with or without sugar. We included the sugar and it was pleasantly sweet. Warm and comforting, it was perfect for a winter evening. My friend and I ordered the same drink so they recommended we get a pot, which was aesthetically lovely in all glass, and large enough for three of us to share, with plenty to spare. I also tried their carrot cake. I love that it had no nuts or raisins. The cream cheese frosting was rich and delicious. We also had the pistachio cake and it was airy and subtly sweet. I also had the chance to try Yemeni coffee for the first time, which was a unique experience and something I'm glad I discovered here. Side note: Suggested they add desserts to this spot's listing which appears to have been done. This is one of the many Arabic (usually Yemeni) coffee (or qawa) and tea (or shay) shops that have popped up around the city more recently. By comparison to others, the prices are a tad higher and they concentrate more on desserts. They have also have capitalized on trends and stuff a bit more and the inside is a bit fancier compared to Moka or Qawah House or otherwise which makes sense a bit with said higher prices with there being plenty of space. I've been here a handful of times though I haven't actually had their coffee. The first time I was here, I ordered a Saffron Chai which was tasty. The saffron flavor was pretty good with some threads on top of said tea with the tea itself being somewhat well spiced otherwise. I would say it was worse than the only comparable one which is the Kesar Chai at Ruhani in BK near Barclays which has a stronger saffron flavor. The second time, I ordered a Karak Chai which is oddly in the same description as the more common Adeni Chai as those two drinks are bit different. The former word means strong and said tea flavor was quite strong with the spices being a bit lighter compared to the better chai at Ruhani as well as the best chain which is Qawah House. However, it is better than Qamaria or Moka. In terms of desserts, I would say they excel at those more though I think they've got a little bit too ham on the whole Dubai trend though I think their interpretations are tastier than most spots. The Dubai Milk Cake is outstanding with it not being too sweet with the layers of pistachio, knafeh/kataifi, and a light chocolate layer on the bottom. The Dubai Mosaic cake which costs a bit more was denser with some more crunch as there are biscuits within said cake. Otherwise, it's a tad dry but hey you're probably having a tea or coffee with it which helps with the dryness. The Chocolate Mousse is not recommended being a bit dry and overpriced while the Dubai Cup is expensive but full of goodies. Overall, this is a tasty different take on an Arabic coffee/chai spot. It's a bit pricier but not by that much and the drinks are solid while the desserts are better. I prefer some other places but I still like it. read more

I have had Haraz in Dallas so I was excited to see a NYC location since I've only been able to try Qawah for Yemeni chai. The aesthetics were beautifully Arabic with lots of light. My hubs got the Turkish tea (underwhelming with not a lot of kick) and I got the Haraz latte since I could substitute with non dairy milk (sigh the struggle of a lactose intolerant girly). Came here to try out their pastries on a weekday around noon. The space is really new and clean, but not many people inside. The staff was very friendly, but they seemed to be overstaffed (something like 1 lady taking orders and at least 4 guys mostly standing around.. I guess they're still figuring out how to efficiently staff their shops? I got the Sabaya and the Biscoff mosaic - both to go. They warmed up the sabaya for me and I think drizzled a chocolate sauce on the mosaic. I didn't get to eat the sabaya until a few hours later and it was quite hard, but I'm sure it was bette when it was still hot.. The mosaic was very tasty, and not too sweet despite being very chocolatey. Between the two I definitely recommend the mosaic, but I can't say it's worth $9. As the other reviews noted, the prices here are high here. I didn't realize my 2 pastries would cost over $20 including tax/tip.. There were no prices in the display cases, and I guess there were prices on the menu behind the counter, but I didn't notice them. I guess that's on me for assuming - I had just come from the dominique ansel down the street and didn't think prices would be 30% higher here.. It is a cafe that functions as a social forum more than a study space given the eclectic crowd and vibrant, traditional music in the background. Even the cutlery and serving trays are accented with gold for an aesthetic experience that ties the experience together. Service was very fast given how many people were on staff during our visit. It felt very familial within the staff members as well as how they interacted with patrons. A group of five friends and I split two pots of Adeni chai and two pastries across us all. The chai was strong with robust flavors of various spices, cardamom being the prime feature. We added small amounts of sugar on the side as it can be otherwise bitter, but even a tiny morsel made the difference of balancing out the various notes. We tried the tiramisu and a delicate pistachio creme layered pastry, both of which were fine. The main let-down, however, is the outrageously expensive pricing. For a group of five people sharing two pots of tea and two pastries, the total came out to $80 or $16/pp. Even for the location in the heart of SoHo, this is quite expensive when there are places where one can find a specialty drink and a pastry all to themselves for less. One issue is certainly that prices for pastries were not listed at all, as if patrons are just expected to know, but the cost simply does not justify the quality of the pastry either. For the cost of the pots of chai, the ingredients themselves can be bought for multiple servings. While definitely an aesthetic experience, I don't think much else is justified beyond that when there are multiple Yemeni and/or other specialty coffee and tea spots in NYC for far less. read more

I came here on a Saturday evening, needing an after dinner pick me up. The place looked so pretty from the outside and inside. It wasn't that crowded but the workers definitely seemed overwhelmed and disorganized. It took a while to get my order in because the workers were all scrambling behind. He asked someone else and said yes, I proceed to order one of the drinks and he says that can't be made iced so I asked what could be made iced and then another guy says they don't want to do iced drinks because they are too busy? Uhm what? So I was like I don't want hot coffee, can I just get an iced americano? I should've just left. It was the worst americano I've ever had. Straight water. For a cup that size and water filled to the to that level, you need to add a minimum of 2 shots. One simply isn't enough. Not to mention the prices here are ridiculously high. I also saw one of the workers washing dishes at the handwashing station. This is a violation.
