Okay, 3 times supposed to be the charm, right? I'm a huge lover of fish & chips and have given this place 3 chances now to impress me. Strike 3! I really didn't get the hype here. Although the portion sizes are large and inexpensive, I've been left wondering where the flavor is? The fish is less than ho-hum, the tarter sauce on the fish taco is as plain tasting as the fish itself. One of my favorite stops in Oceanside. You can sit inside or on the harbor beside the water under an umbrella. It's a bit pricey, but the portions are large and really fresh. Fried zucchini is delicious and of course the fish is great. Tastes fresh and breading is crispy. Love it! read more

While vacationing in San Diego this week, my wife and I always enjoy driving up the coast. We always stop in Oceanside when we do. We've been to the harbor several times but this was our first time visiting Harbor Fish & Chips. Everyone was very friendly and the service was relatively quick. I'm not a huge fan of seafood so I had a chicken (seasoned with lemon pepper) sandwich. It was excellent! I was pleasantly surprised and my wife really enjoyed the 2 piece fish and chips dinner. Here comes another food nerd alert for an east coast girl who loves fried seafood. I'm not sure what it is about putting shellfish and cod in crispy tempura (perhaps the fact that EVERYTHING tastes better in tempura?!) that makes it so comforting and delish, but Harbor Fish and Chips does it right in true east coast style. Though nothing really rivals British style fish and chips, this is how it's done right in America. The gorgeous views help too--this is like a true taste of summer. I thought Oceanside was just one big boring and overtly macho Marines camp, so who knew there was a pleasant harbor with normal-people bars and restaurants? At the harbor there is (surprisingly) adequate free parking--just be sure not to park in the spaces marked "for boat permit only"--there is a parking cop that WILL ticket you (we watched him writing several). There are tiny souvenir stands (get your shell art here!) and a really great sounding mom n' pop ice cream shop. Seating can be inside the restaurant, but it's just some dingy little booths and a walk-up counter to order at, so sitting outside is nicer, if you can handle people walking by your picnic table all the time and staring at you while you eat. If you get a picnic table, stake it out--this place (and the closely neighboring restaurants) are popular. Not any less popular with the seagulls and with the gargantuan ground squirrels, either, that come out and stare at you--they'd probably drag and unattended toddler into their burrows. The menu doesn't have a lot in it--and a lot of things are named "Captain" something or other--the fried shrimp are apparently a hit and the good ol' fish and chips basket is a winner--you get two huge pieces of cod and fries in a paper tray--down and dirty--make it awesome with tartar sauce and lots of salt and vinegar. Prices are really good--around $8-$13--weird extras like fried pickle chips (you NEED these at a greasy little fish shack) mean this place is keepin' it real. Yum, YUM. read more

My family and i have been eating there for over 20 years and have never had a bad meal. The crew that works behind the counter is friendly courteous and the place is clean. The customer service is second to none. The owner Terry Cross is really friendly as well and can tell you a lot of history about Oceanside and Oceanside Harbor. We Sit outside and enjoy our meal while enjoying the spectacular view of the harbor. They even have beer and wine,(as well as soda) for that special evening. I've tried this place a couple of times, and have been very disappointed. It took 35 minutes to get the food, and when it finally arrived, it was cold. I asked for a salad instead of fries, and they arrived with just lettuce and one crouton! The tarter sauce is over on another in a big jug. It's hard to find if you haven't been there...but parking is free, you walk under the railroad tracks (be careful of cars, but you can squeeze by I suppose under that narrow tunnel) and go to the left...let the atmosphere of the place take you away...get your Captain's Plate on...and then go to the beach right up the street...after a nice cup of Joe...the place is so cool. read more

I don't want to be on my soapbox too much here but I have so many questions. First and foremost, why is the food so expensive here? I had the Friday sampler which consists of beaded shrimp, beaded haddock, coleslaw, and French fries. All of which were good but no where near the $13 I paid for all of that. I come from a place called Port Washington in Wisconsin and I have to tell you, I noticed no difference between there and here. I just figured since this place is right next to a pier and the prices of the food are so high that I would get something that would actually match that. But sadly I was disappointed. Also the person who was taking my order was extremely patronizing and very unprofessional. She proceeded to watch me and make sure that I selected a tip amount for my order, as if she even provided a service that warranted a tip. All these people do is call you when your order is ready, what's the difference between them and any other regular fast food restaurant? She also took the credit card slider from me and basically completed almost the whole transaction for me as if I don't know how to work a credit card machine. I'm 24 years old and I have a bachelor's degree in Psychology. I would suggest to this place that if they want to charge that much for decent food at least train your employees appropriately. read more

After checking Yelp beforehand and a positive experience years ago my family and I were pretty shocked by just how terrible the food was. The service was friendly and relatively quick but nearly everyone said their food was mediocre at best and downright terrible at worst. The fish and chips, their maind draw, looks verry appealing but one bite in an you realize how bland and flavorless it truly is, that combined with soggy and nearly inedible fries made the entire thing dissapointing. The clam chowder that three of us got tasted like it had just been popped out of a can, bad flavor and consistency. The Chicken Salad, 11 dollars by the way, had all of five small squares on chicken on a bed of plain iceberg lettuce. The Chicken Sandwich was 9 dollars for a small piece of chicken that barely occupied half the bun, didn't include cheese and came with lettuce and tomato that you could put on at your discretion. Wanted to try this for a while. The fish tacos are huge and delicious. The fish and chips is just ok by British standards. This is by far the BEST fish and chips in the entire country! (Well at least as far as I've tried). I've tried fish and chips all over the place and none compares. Can't find a decent place down in San Diego. The fish is a healthy portion, the batter just crispy enough, coleslaw, fries, onion rings aren't so bad either. Watch out if you order a fish taco though, they are HUGE. I can never eat a whole one. We don't live up in Oceanside anymore but don't hesitate to drive 30 minutes once in a while just to go up there. Definintely a MUST TRY if you love english style fish and chips. read more

I am extremely picky about my fish & chips--no, I'm not British but I really love excellent batter-fried fish and I really hate mediocre batter-fried fish. I have to say, Harbor Fish & Chips is the best I can remember in a long, long time. They are a bit greasy but not overly. The fish was hot and flakey and tasted very fresh. My husband and I have been coming here for nearly 10 years now and we haven't found a better fish and chips place yet! We usually split a large fish and chips plate because the portions of fish are SO big! On a nice, sunny day the atmosphere is great as you have a view of the Oceanside harbor while you're eating. It does get pretty crowded on the weekends and even more crowded during the summer. I did have their clam chowder once and didn't care for it because it was really watery. I will admit my husband and I did cheat on Harbor Fish and Chips once and ate at Tin Fish by the pier. NEVER again! Their food is over priced and the fish in the fish and chips basket is more like stale fish sticks. Save your money and eat GOOD, BIG portions of fish at Harbor Fish and Chips. read more

We were driving from Disney to Coronado and needed a place to stop and eat. This place popped up in Yelp so we pulled over just in time. It was excellent! So glad we found this place! We will make sure to schedule a stop there next time we make the trek to Cali. The fish pieces where huuuuge! We ate outside on the picnic tables and enjoyed the view of the harbor.
