Had breakfast on Saturday morning at this restaurant in Oceanside. The location is attached to the Mission Pacific Hotel. We arrived for breakfast just after 9 AM and it was not crowded at all. We were able to sit wherever we wanted. The restaurant offers indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating has an amazing view of the Oceanside beach and pier. The indoor seating is an open air concept with their coffee bar and bakery at the front and a closed kitchen in the back. The weight staff was very professional and courteous. Ours was especially attentive and took the time to tell us what some of the more popular dishes are at breakfast time. The food was delicious. Their coffee was delicious! I ordered the lemon ricotta pancakes, and they were moist and surprisingly, very citrusy and slightly tart which was balanced with a few dollops of lemon curd that was on the plate. I also ordered a coffee cake, which I did not end up eating however, when I had it as a midnight snack later, it was delicious. It was so buttery, especially on top where the crumble was. It was the perfect blend of sweet and salty. My daughter ordered the Hawaiian style fried rice. We were pleasantly surprised that the spam on the plate is homemade spam and not the kind you get from the can. It definitely tasted a lot better than the kind you get from the can. Sidenote: I am a fan of the one you get on the can, however! The fried rice was fried with kimchi, pineapple, green onion, and toasted sesame oil. The plate came with a thin omelette on top. The portions are good, and if you are not too hungry, you can definitely share them. This place is also dog friendly, which I found to be great since I am the owner of a rat terrier. There were plenty of other customers with their furry friends chilling at their feet. In fact, the restaurant offers a pet menu with options like unsalted hamburger or unsalted and grilled chicken thigh. I am definitely going to go back when I'm in the area. My cousin and I had Saturday brunch at High/Low on a gorgeous yet chilly Saturday. We had a 10 minute wait for seat outside. We were seated at a perfect table on the patio, Ethan was our awesome server! I had a really hard time choosing what I wanted, so I went with the Clam Chowder and the Vegan Banana Pancake. The Clam Chowder was presented beautifully, but actually was just ok. There was little flavor, it was mostly just a bowl of potatoes and broth. The vegan banana pancake was delicious!! My cousin said her food was just ok as well. We both had hot drinks and loved them. I had a latte and she had 2 of the hot chocolates. We did enjoy the ambiance and the service. Whoa! Second time here and again what a beautiful meal. Seated facing the ocean outside on the patio was amazing! Staff is upbeat and adorable. We went for the basic breakfast of the scrambled eggs with maple sausage and thin waffles- I added spinach to my eggs-- fantastic! Husband got the Rancheros egg plate- whoa, the crispy tortilla and smooth beans are delicious with all the ingredients. We had coffee drinks too- cappuccino and lattes. Perfecto. The overall experience was disappointing due to a clear lack of quality control and execution. The fried chicken tenders were unusually dark (overcooking or poor oil management). The flavor and texture reflected that as well. The Hawaiian kimchi fried rice (?)wasn't actually fried. The kimchi tasted raw and barely warmed, mixed into hot rice without proper cooking. It felt unfinished and difficult to eat--I only had a couple of bites before stopping. What made this more concerning was noticing that another table also left more than half of their fried rice untouched, suggesting this wasn't an isolated issue. Overall, the food felt overthought yet under-executed. Some dishes lacked a clear identity and came across as confused rather than intentional. If the kitchen isn't confident in executing certain dishes, it would be better to remove them from the menu entirely. Restaurants should serve food that guests can reasonably enjoy and finish. Creativity is welcome, but it needs to be supported by clarity, consistency, and proper execution--unfortunately, that balance was missing here. read more

I've been here a few times now, and it has become one of my favorite spots in O'side. Whenever I'm feeling low, I want to get high and enjoy a cup of black coffee and a good meal while listening to "Lo/Hi" by The Black Keys. Between the stunning ocean views and the entertaining people watching, it's a cool place to sit back and relax. ​The food has been consistently impressive across all my visits. I especially enjoyed the Hawaiian fried rice and the Cardiff crack hash, both of which were packed with flavor. For something sweet, the banana bread, monkey bread and the open-face pop tart are delicious! ​Beyond the food and the scenery, the service is what really sets this place apart. I've been coming to high/low since it's opening around 5 years ago. The food (classic Southern California/American fare) is consistently delicious. The cocktails are fresh and inventive. When I am wanting a coffee + pastry and a walk on the beach, I love to get an Americano and their almond croissant and stroll the pier. When I want to grab lunch with a friend or bring a guest from out of town to a restaurant with an ocean view, high/low is at the top of my list! I came today with a friend and we enjoyed lunch. She had the rockfish ceviche and I had the chicken and avocado sando. And we both chose a little sparkling wine to go with. The sando was great, with the bread being perfectly buttered and lightly toasted. I was grateful to the server for the suggestion of swapping out the coleslaw for sweet potato fries. My friend said the ceviche, which is served with plantain chips was so good, she ended up scooping up the juice with a spoon! Recieved excellent service- chill, knowledgable about the menu and friendly. The price for a sit down meal is somewhat expensive, but worth it. Will happily pay for scrumptious food and an oceanfront view. High/Low is located in front of and attached to the Mission Pacific Hotel. Parking can be a challenge, but there is a Pay lot nearby and metered street parking. Looking forward to going back soon! read more

I've been trying this business out since I moved here and they still don't disappoint... my group loved the food. Eggs were cooked perfect, waffles were delicious, tater tots are a little oily so can't eat too many of them but I love the crunch, the clamp chowder was good- not too creamy but make sure you love bacon because its a bit overwhelming in flavor, and the Bloody Marry was great. The view of the ocean is pretty much blocked by the plants in front of the outside dining area, I wish it was more open for the view but you can venture out after dining for an amazing walk down to the beach or at the Pier. I recommend this restaurant for its breakfast. Their food is really good and they also can get you a latte or other specialty coffee to go if needed. It is near the lobby of the hotel so it is accessible and restrooms are nearby. I try to make it here each time I visit Oceanside. read more

First of all one of the most gorgeous places we have tried on this trip. We could not have asked for a nicer morning to have brunch looking over the ocean. The cappuccino with housemaid vanilla was exquisite. The service could've been more attentive, but the server was very nice. The food was tasty however, my pancakes were a smidge dry and the Cardiff crack hash was so close to Amazing. It was perfectly done meat, potatoes, onions, and peppers, and the chimichurri was very good. The only issue was the poached eggs were practically hard boiled so there was no runny yolk to melt everything together. It had bacon , eggs, tots, cheese , salsa verde which was really yummy - picked jalapeños. We also had a piece of banana bread that was thick & yummy . The views are amazing of the ocean . While this is known as a breakfast place, we were here for happy hour cocktails and appetizers after walking the strand! Very cute patio and super casual- perfect to stop by if you are in work out clothes. We both had margaritas that were made perfectly and not overly expensive. The chips and guac- delicious!! And the chips were just right, not too thick and heavy, they were light with just the right amount of salt. Service- fantastic. Would like to recognize Jacob, super friendly, super helpful and just a pleasure to interact with! He should be recognized for his service. Look at my food. Do you think it takes more than 35 minutes to cook this? The food took so long to come to the table and the food was very mediocre. It was not worth the price or the wait. The service was also not good. Trust me, if you actually enjoy HIGH quality food for a good price, try going somewhere else. This place isn't good and their flavors are not well balanced. High/Low is, as far as I can tell, the only beachfront restaurant by the Oceanside Pier. The location and low Yelp rating gave me a pretty good idea of what to expect, and I was neither disappointed nor impressed with our experience. We went for Sunday brunch during MLK weekend, showing up around 11:30, and the place was busy busy busy. We put our name down and took a nice stroll along the beach. Helpfully, there was an online waitlist, which we were able to monitor through a texted link. Unhelpfully, the waitlist was inaccurate. We headed back when we thought we were next in line, only to find there were still a couple parties ahead of us. We did get seated, though, shortly after we got the text to come to the host stand. The space was great, a sunny patio with easy ambiance and a decent street-level view of the beach. There were umbrellas and heaters for temperature control, and we found it quite warm for a cool day in mid-January and actually asked to turn off the heater by our table. Service was quick and friendly, and high chairs readily available. I started my brunch with a Bloody Mary, made with Locals Only vodka and garnished with pepperoncini, celery, and a twist of bacon. It was solid, and I liked that it came with a little snack. I ordered the dill Baja shrimp roll for the rest of my meal, and this was cheerfully mediocre. Tiny shrimp bound in a mayo dill dressing, served on Hawaiian bread with crispy onion, pickled jalapeño, and a decent side of fries. My husband and sons had sweeter fare, a spread of French toast and pastries. I tried a bite of the French toast and it was super sugary, but I guess that's by design. The pastries weren't the best. The banana bread, supposedly homemade, was refrigerator cold and also very sweet. The butter croissant looked like it came from somewhere not quite as nice as Costco. High/Low is a hassle to visit, and the food is nothing special, but I'd still recommend it if you're passing through Oceanside. It's a lovely spot for brunch by the beach. read more

If you are at the beach and want some good brunch, High/Low is the spot! We have gone twice and the service can be a hit or miss. The first time we were there, the staff was super friendly and accommodating as they spoke to us, but the second time, the hostess' facial expressions looked like she was annoyed with us and made us feel unwelcomed. However, the waitress and other staff members were nice when they were serving us. My favorite dish is the Cardiff Crack Hash because chimichurri is THAT sauce. Despite having five staff members and only a few tables occupied, no one brought my food or checked on me. I waited over 15 minutes, clearly visible, and no one said a word. I love how they have Mexican Sprite with the meal and the fact I can get a cappuccino to go. Once the sun came out the patio was gorgeous and I regret not stopping by the Top Gun house nextdoor to grab some pies. I did go for a walk on the pier after as it is right across the street. Their coffee was good too and they brought a nice brownie in a skillet with vanilla bean ice cream and strawberries for the birthday girl in our party. The chicken pot pie needed more veggies but was a nice presentation. Some of the other dishes our party had looked delicious too.
