Finally had a chance to check out Hard Eight. Yes, I've never had it. I'm not sure why I'm giving it 3 stars. I wasn't really satisfied but maybe because I didn't order my usual. Brisket is my usual order when checking out a new bbq spot. I had 1/2lb ham which is ok and 1/2lb sirloin which is on a dry side while having a perfect color pink in the middle. The star of my visit is their whiskey buttermilk pie. I should've have gotten 2 as I was thinking about it after getting back home. We go to Hard 8 a few times a year. Today, we met out of town friends of my husband. Husband always orders a ribeye - perfect as always. I always order turkey or ham, sometimes a bit of both plus a sweet potato. Although the meat was spot on, I will never order a sweet potato there again. Although it was perfectly cooked, it was TINY. The tiny potato was $3.95 for approximately 4 bites. Nope. And husband's $3.95 baked potato about the same. The delivery of steaks to the table was wonderful though. In the past, husband had to wait by fireplace and escort his steak to the table while missing out on whatever was happening at the table. This is not the place to dawdle with friends either. The built in wood stools are just a tad too high for my 5'-1" height. So uncomfortable. Plus it doesn't take much to make it loud in there. Indoors is not as loud as the porch which is covered but parallel to 121. They should have flipped the building and put the porch on south side. Just my opinion. read more

This place was ok... Jalapeño sausages - - the highlight of the store. They seasoned it perfectly and didn't need any sauce at all. Pulled pork - - extremely juicy and tender. Flavour worked well together too. Ribs - - the ribs here were so tender. Absolutely fall off the bone tender. But the flavour profile a little lacking. If you're really hungry and you want to eat good, like pig out... go here! I can't lie, walking up to the open BBQ pit, looking at all the delicious cuts of meat, I was overly excited. It might also be because I starved myself before going, I wanted to get the full plate experience. The most important thing to remember at Hard Eight - you pay by weight. If you don't remember that, you'll do some serious damage on your receipt. Fast! Knowing that, and after perusing the menu before going, I did like the regulars. I got a quarter pound of regular sausage, quarter pound of brisket, one shrimp popper, chicken popper and a rib. More than enough food! For my sides, I got the mac & cheese and of course the free beans. All you can eat. I overindulged with the sweets and got the Oreo mud pie and the blackberry cobbler. I couldn't pick, so I got both. Nothing on my plate disappointed me. The brisket was tender, a little too much fat for me, but still good. The sausage was flavorful, both of the poppers, I could've definitely had more than one, mac & cheese was hot and creamy and it was shells, my favorite and the sweet creamed corn, was amazing, I should've gotten some to go. The Oreo Mud Pie and the banana pudding were tasty, my sugar craving was met, the Oreo mud pie had a lot of Oreos, a thumbs up for me. The blackberry cobbler had a lot of crust and that's RIGHT up my alley, fresh and hot. I walked away from the table embarrassingly full lol...but every bite was worth it. When you go inside, you'll see all of the smokers in action and walk into the line area with lots of savory smells. You can order ribeyes more up front, or walk up to the BBQ counter area and pick weights of the meats you want. My favorites are the sausages and brisket. I let him know my thoughts on it and he offered to get me anything else to replace it. Hard Eight has pretty solid BBQ. It's not the best BBQ and it doesn't make my Top 5, but it's good to very good, depending on what you eat. Brisket is my jam. Some may be disappointed that I don't speak to any sausage in my BBQ reviews, and it's because I save room for the star of the show. I enjoy smoked turkey, too, but I rarely waste any space on sausage, the good ol least-pure mystery-meat leftovers grind that may be tasty but is not as impressive a craft to me as a well smoked pure meat. :) Typically they do a good job cutting my lean brisket; I can't complain about paying for excess fat when they weigh my ridiculous amount of brisket. My brisket has always (almost always?) been moist, as has the turkey. Ultimately it's the flavor and texture that takes it out of the Top 5. It's got very good flavor and is definitely tender, but ... it could be better. It's right next to the house and I certainly don't avoid it, so it's good enough for return visits - but not top tier brisket. We recently placed our first takeout (curbside) order, and that experience ALMOST knocks this down to 3 stars - but not quite. They missed some items and some substitutions, but they got my most important items. That being said, my son was VERY disappointed that they missed our roasted corn, so that sucked. Good news is they didn't charge us for it - but hopefully they get our order 100% right next time. Their fries are awesome, by the way. Their sweet potato fries are good, but their regular fries are awesome - even when curbsided and taken home. We came here on the recommendation of several people. I'm going to be honest, I'm not sure what all the hype was about. It was barbecue, nothing to write home about. You stand in line, get your meats by the lb, then stand in line for your sides, and drinks are ordered at the bar. The atmosphere is similar to any outdoor/indoor patio style bbq restaurant with TVs and taxidermy animals. There was nothing wrong with it, just mid level food. read more

I really loved this place but the meat was a little bit underwhelming and so were the fries and the blackberry cobler. Overall the place had a great ambiance and was filled with smoke, like when you shower the next morning your hair smells like campfire. It is definitely expensive. I was very full but the meal was over 50 bucks without alcohol. The brisket was good and tender but the meat really needed the sauce. Same with the ribs, the pork ribs were great but they really needed the sauce (which was good) but I feel a good smoke meat should be able to stand on its own without the sauce. The fries were plentyful but they were not crisp at all and soggy. Not my favorite. The blackberry cobler was just not my cup of "cobler". It was a little too sticky and texture was inconsistent. The shrimp poppers were ok. Actually my favorite meats were the bologna and sausage. They were way better than the other bbq joints. What a great place to dine! We arrived early enough to not have to wait in line too long, 20 minutes, but when we departed the line was out the door, so plan to arrive early. The gentleman cutting/carving was very kind and explained the process for this "virgin" to Hard Eight BBQ. I had a 1/2 pound of sausage and a potato with turkey. The meat was AMAZING! I am confident ALL their meat choices are equally as wonderful. Also you can chose to add several sides, as you move down the line to the cashier. In the dining area you can ad bean stew free of charge. The seating is hard stools so don't plan to relax and stay the seats are not comfortable, but there is plenty of room to spread out and enjoy your meal. One of my favorite BBQ spots in Texas . I love their brisket, corn, and Mac and cheese. However, I have noticed in inconsistency in flavor . Sometimes, I need to add more seasoning to their sides than usual, and last time my brisket completely fell apart to the point that I couldn't finish it because it was SO tender and chopped to the point that it was inconceivable to pick up with a fork lol . This has become one of our go-to places, not just for us, but when we have friends/family visiting from out of town. Obviously, there are a ton of options when it comes to steak houses but everyone loves the steaks here! They comes with some grilled onions and a jalapeno - the combo is amazing! Some of my favorites are the all beef balogna and brisket. They will dip the corn and baked potatoes/sweet potatoes in butter if you ask. As far as sides go the sweet potato fries, mac and cheese and jalapeno corn are must haves every time we go. They have the fixings for baked potatoes/sweet potatoes - which you can also get stuffed. Lots of yummy dessert options as well - all of them good! It's first come first serve seating but we usually don't have any issues even with large groups. Staff is friendly and food is amazing! When you're in Texas, the standards for BBQ are high. Anywhere else, I would say this is above average berbecue, but in Dallas, I sadly must say it's just alright. The brisket was a bit dry and some of the meat just wasn't as flavorful as I was hoping. The experience is definitely nice, but for the price I don't think I'd be coming back here again. This review is long overdue, but this place is great and I know most restaurants can use a little love right now! Came here on a work trip and my co-worker recommended it. So good! As soon as you pull into the parking lot you can smell that great BBQ smell. I had a sampler with brisket, pulled pork and ribs and everything was juicy, smoky and succulent! I haven't been here in years but I'm so glad I came with my cousin! When you walk in, it's a bit confusing regarding how to order meat, but the signs are there, so pay attention! I ordered half a chicken, 1/2 lb of brisket, sausage, and ribs. We also got Cole slaw, beans, sweet potato fries, and the chocolate pecan pie. Everything is 5 stars. I don't even know where to start. Listen, the chicken fell off the bone delicious. The brisket was so tender but also lean, and when you eat it with the barbecue sauce, it was amazing, but the stars of the show were the sweet potato fries and the chocolate pecan pie. Caveat here is that it was dinner time so the brisket I'm sure just naturally dries out a bit later in the day. With that said, brisket is the measuring stick for bbq. The top w the fat was great but the rest was dry like chalk, even the sauce didn't help. Baked potato was very average, jalapeño sausage was probably the best thing we had. Would be interested to try the brisket earlier in the day which is the only reason this is not a one star review. Plenty of seating and looks nice and service was good. You know you've been to a real Texas BBQ joint when you smell like smoke the rest of the day. This place is both new and rustic at the same time. The setup is quite unique. There are two huge wood burning smokers out front. The grill masters are feeding the fire boxes to keep the smokers at just the right temp. On our visit there was an old Texan (exactly what you might imagine) as the greeter. Once inside you get an up close view of several open fire grills where meat is being finished. Ordering is cafeteria style. You follow one of two queues to the meat ordering station. The meat station is neat. It is a huge open display that is heated by glowing embers. The display has many options that of course include brisket, ribs, sausage, and chicken. You tell the server exactly what you want, and he carves it for you. He passes it to another worker who weighs and prices your ordered. I ordered two ribs, four slices of jalapeño sausage, and two bacon wrapped chicken poppers. The total weight was .68 pounds and it came out to around $12. The ribs were outstanding. The meat was firm on the bone, but It was very tender and not dried out. The rub and smoky flavor was incredible. I didn't use any BBQ sauce because the ribs stood on their own. The jalapeño sausage. OMG, I would go back just for this! Salty, spicy, just the right meat-to-fat ratio. The chicken poppers were my least favorite even though they looked the most intriguing. A piece of chicken breast, onion, and jalapeño are wrapped in bacon. A tooth pick holds it all together. It was good, but a little dry. The poppers have potential though. They say everything is bigger in Texas, and this is no exception. It is a big restaurant with lots of indoor and outdoor seating. A big bar, and country music blaring on sound system. 100% Texas BBQ. The entrance is through the smoke kingdom( that's not what they refer to ut as) but yes you are in the right place. The menu is at the very top whenever you choose the account of meat and type of meat you would like. It is definitely not vegan or vegetarian friendly. After selection it us weighed a receipt issued to you then you proceed into the dining space where you choose your entrées. If you are a fun of fries this is where you would ask for some. From here you pay for your meal then seat yourself. They have some seating for larger parties too as the tables are long and acoomodating. Note that the chairs don't move they are screwed in.
