Even though the employee had yet to interact with me, I am prompted for a gratuity. The photos showcasing the menu items were not helpful. For instance, the photo for the Kalua Combo showed a chicken dish and Kalua Pork. When I was prompted for a chicken item, there were no photos. I could not select the chicken shown in the entree. Unlike the online menu which included Teriyaki Chicken, I only recall BBQ Chicken and Chicken Katsu as options. Fortunately, I opted for the Chicken Katsu. For my beverage, I chose a Hawaiian Sun canned drink. My order was served within 9 minutes. The service already did not match the gratuity. When I asked about my drink, I was pointed to the display case by the kiosk. Sadly, beverage delivery was neither one of her responsibilities nor included service. On their menu, "veggies" was included in various entrees. Veggie would have been a better description as the only vegetable was cabbage leaves. The cabbage was placed underneath the chicken and pork. The water from the cabbage caused the bottom portions of the meat to be soggy. Due to being breaded, the chicken was not as affected as the pork. Of the items served, I enjoyed the macaroni salad the most. It had plenty of flavor. The Kalua Pork which were not soaked in cabbage juice had an okay taste. Not only did the breading on Chicken Katsu provide flavor, it protected the chicken meat from being soggy. While a fork was served with my food, I had to grab a knife from the dispenser. Sweet mercy this place is my new favorite restaurant. I can't express how good the food is. We walked in and were greeted almost immediately which was so nice. We asked the attendant at the register (unfortunately didn't catch his name) what he recommended because it was our first time in. He recommended the lunch plates and told us the most popular are the Hawaiian BBQ Mix & the BBQ and Katsu Mix. He was extremely helpful throughout the process. L&L and Shaka We did order catering from here previously at my church and they have some very reasonable prices and put together the food that's great for luau style or beach (lake beach) events, picnics. Food is about $12-14 a plate and you can get spam musubi here as well that's pretty good. Two for like $5. I appreciate the fact that they include sauces and utensils in the bag without having to ask as well. As for the food, here is what I ordered: BBQ Katsu Mix: Consists of 3 meats (which I will rate individually), 2 scoops of steamed white rice, 1 scoop of macaroni salad, and cabbage. Rice was simple and you can't mess it up. Macaroni salad was delicious and I enjoyed every creamy bite of it while pairing it with the BBQ beef. As for the cabbage, I must say that it had a strange flavor that I did not enjoy, it seems that it wasn't boiled the same way like most other Hawaiian places. Meats ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Chicken Katsu - Very crispy golden breading on this chicken katsu and tastes even better when it dipped in the accompanying sauce. I will note though that some parts of the chicken had fat. BBQ Chicken - Dark meat chicken that has been marinated in a BBQ-teriyaki tasting sauce which is then grilled. This chicken was especially good when dipped in sauce and eaten with rice. BBQ Beef - My personal favorite, chopped up pieces of beef that are heavily marinated and packed with flavor. I could eat this with the mac salad all day, thanks to the tenderness of this beef. Probably not the most popular item on the menu but it is a hidden gem. Overall ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If your looking for good and consistent Hawaiian BBQ, you should definitely hit up Shaka. If you get the combo lunch plates (Hawaiian BBQ combo and katsu combo) just know that it's a lot of food and very well worth the price tag.
