Hargen's is a top notch operation. I have used him on my own home several times and the work is stellar at a competitive price. I also work in property management and manage a few buildings on the Peninsula. He does all of our damage restoration for the property management business. Hired them to extend the rain gutters 10 feet. Original installation of 200 feet of rain gutters (different company) was $2500. Hargen charged us $1000 to extend it 10 feet, and now it leaks! (wasn't leaking before Hargens touched it). read more

We had gutters installed by Hargens in Nov 2019. Two months later when we got heavy rain, we realized the gutters weren't installed correctly and were leaking. We have been trying ever since to get them to come correct their installation issues, but have consistently been getting the runaround. Two weeks ago, after leaving yet another message, we threatened bad reviews. They called the next day and promised to come out. Someone did come out, but stated they had no tools in their truck and they would return the next day. Still waiting....still have broken products since Nov 2019. We've been trying to get them to close out a quote for nearly 2 weeks so we can start repairs and every time you need to ask them a question they take 2-3 days to respond. Absolutely unacceptable. If I can rate more than 5 stars, I would. If you want to choose a contractor that truly cares about you and the final product for your home, you should choose Tom Hargens and his company. My hardwood floors in my kitchen floors were damaged d/t a water leak from my dishwasher. The leak damaged my hardwood floors and cabinets, so they were all removed. Somehow my countertops were able to be intact. I contacted many contractors, most would not respond d/t COVID and SIP, and when some did respond, they said cabinets can't be installed with countertops still intact. Tom Hargens and his company took on this job. We couldn't start the project until it was safe to do so based on the county rules d/t COVID. But while waiting, Tom helped me order the same customized cabinets and when the project started, it only took 2 days for the floors and 1 day and a half to install my cabinets and be done with. His team were so great and made sure my kitchen looked exactly like it was before. It was a really stressful time for me not having a kitchen. But Tom was responsive, caring, thorough and made sure everything was perfect and that I was happy. His team were professional and did a great job on my kitchen. I have no regrets hiring Tom and would recommend this company to anyone. read more

I found Hargen's in a mailer I received. Seeing that I needed a new downspout, I called them for an estimate. The work was done yesterday and I'm pleased with how it looks and costs. I appreciated that the estimate gave me three different choices and prices for the new downspout. I'd use them again if I had work of this nature. I'd be more inclined to give them a 4 or even 5 star rating, but it was challenging to get emails and/or phone calls returned. read more

Our upper neighbor saw that our gutters weren't draining. A big storm was predicted. Hargens came to give an estimate and the man cleaned out the worst of it. He saved us from disaster. Several weeks later two men came and did a complete job. They were all professional and pleasant. Great quality at a good price. We plan to call them every year. read more

Do not recommend. Summary: careless, not honest, overpriced Hired them to investigate leaking deck. They said that they need to do watertesting and that they charge per hour with minimum 4 hours. Watertesting took slighlty more than an hour and then they found an issue. It appeared that issue was not in the deck, but with the piece of roof. People who did watertesting said that they will make a report which they would show to an owner and owner will send a person to check the roof before giving a quote. Our contact person (Pompeu Ferreira, I assume that he's either owner of one of the managers) actually didn't bother to follow up and we had to contact him several times. Eventually he send a guy what was completely clueless about what work need to be done and was only able to measure size of the deck. Later he send us a quote for replacing a deck which was significantly higher than we get from other contractors. Then our contact person (Pompeu Ferreira) sent us a bill for watertesting which was for 7 hours of work (as I mentioned above actual watertesting took 1 hour and they initially told that they charge minimum 4 hours). When we asked why they trying to charge us for 7 hours of work, they yelled at us and only told that they charge for travel time which was not disclosed in advance. However, even if we assume that they charge for travel time it's hard to imagine that they have spent 6 hours travelling from SF to San Mateo. Anyway we eventually were able to negotiate for 5 hour charge, but still not very happy with this outcome. At this point we decided that we don't want to deal with them anymore. Updates: The owner of the company, Tom Hargens, contacted us to further discuss the issue when he saw this review. He apologized for our inconvenience and offered a full refund m. He investigated on his side but we are not updated on the outcome, nor did we receive apology from Pompeu. The fact that the owner actually cares about the customer service makes us feel better. Tom Hargens has been a general contractor in the area for many years and is a true professional. His company, Hargens Inc. is particularly experienced with repairs and renovations to older homes. I've been getting bids for a bathroom remodel and called a number of different contractors. Two weeks later, some are just now starting to return my call or still working on getting me a quote. Tom was easy to reach, flexible in accommodating my schedule, and quickly turned around a very thorough quote on the project. While we have not decided who to go with yet, I did want to give him a positive yelp for being the most prompt and professional so far. read more

Starting late in 2012 through 2013, I had a San Francisco house completely rebuilt by Hargens Inc. after a fire. The end result is an absolutely beautiful new house; a knock out that exceeded all of our expectations. I would not have gotten anything near this without Tom's and Pompeu's professional experience and guidance. The Hargens carpenters are craftsmen. Their work is excellent, prompt and super clean! Pompeu helped us select appliances, bathroom fixtures, flooring, molding, etc. and he also guided us away from selections that would not have worked. Tom helped me through the insurance process. This is an industry he has lots of experience with. The adjusters could not argue with his solid estimates and bids and we got the maximum the policy would bear to rebuild the house. At the end of the project I had a mini punch list of small final items to take care of. Of course, Pompeu had each item fixed toot sweet! In January 2014 we put the house on the market. My long-time realtor has seen many a house but this one was very impressive to him. The other realtors and prospective buyers all commented on the beautiful kitchen and baths and the craftsmanship and attention to detail. The house sold in 6 days. I so much appreciate Hargens for getting me through this trying experience. At the time of the fire I never thought the house would look so amazing, but they did. I really appreciate their vision, patience, professional know-how and upbeat energy. I would hire Hargens again and look forward to our next project! read more

Hargens did two major renovations for us and overall, we are totally happy with the outcome. We completely gutted our ground floor and renovated our bathroom, family room, living room and kitchen. They also did some work in the basement area. Pompeo managed our projects and was always available and stayed on top of the project and timeline. Hargen's employees are total pros and really nice to work with. Had a few minor issues with plumbing and drywall subs they had on the job but everything worked out in the end. I would recommend Hargens and hope to work with them again. read more

We asked Hargens (a construction company) to demolish an area in front of our house to inspect for dry rot. They ripped off all the stucco and insulation from the whole front of our house all the way down to the interior sheet rock. They also removed all the roof tiles from the front of our house since they thought a leak was the cause of the dry rot. They loosely covered the roof and left the front of the house exposed. My wife wanted the sheet rock and electrical junction boxes covered since it's quite damp where we live and moisture on sheet rock and in junction boxes can cause mold to form on the sheetrock and shorts to occur in the electrical system. The contractor said: "Just call us if it rains and we'll cover it then." Duh. Common sense says it's too late to cover it after it starts to rain. The house was left in this very vulnerable condition and I felt intense pressure to hire them to finish the job ASAP. My wife saved our retirement fund when she decided not to hire them to complete the dry rot repair, to restucco, and reroof because they charge by T & M (time and material) and have poor accountability of the times their workmen are on the job site. It's just like handing them a blank check and we were at their mercy. I felt like there was essentially no cap to the price of the project. Also they included a 3 month completion date on the bid. For the demolition we were charged $65 an hour per workman. and we didn't like the idea of being charged a flat $65 per person for travel time to and from their office and our house each day since they were only 14 minutes away. I felt something was wrong the whole time we were dealing with them. They were recommended by CSAA. I finally covered the sheet rock and junction boxes myself and simply paid them off. It took almost 2 months and 8 bids to find Sheldon Doty, (415)810-4902, to complete the dry rot repair and restucco. I also highly recommend AAA General Roofing (415)559-5257, and Nayoung Sheet Metal, (415)822-2259. This was an expensive lesson. Remember, don't hire a contractor who charges by T&M and make sure you get at least 3 bids. read more

Very good work, very professional from the person that answers the phone to the guy who comes out to do the estimates. The only thing is that they took close to 2 weeks from the time I faxed the signed estimate to calling me back to schedule a date for the work. They are busy but that is probably bc they have reasonable rates and do great work. Would definitely go with them again. read more

I have used Hargens on several occasions for my home gutter system. They have always been responsive, timely, and done good work at a fair price. Most recently I have had some rot issues around my door frame which is not due to any defect in their prior workmanship, but almost certainly due to to the shoddy work that went into a recent addition that the door frame is adjacent too, or the roofing above. Ron and Bill Hargen both came over and looked at the problem and although the exact source is not clear, they really did due diligence and took the time to investigate thoughtfully. They were as comfortable with what they knew as what they didn't and offered their best thoughts and options. I have not decided how to proceed yet but we have done some strategic sealing in places to see if the simpler solution is the best one. I will keep in touch with them. I called Hargens for a rush job to install a gutter and downspout beneath the balcony of my Rockaway Beach home. Ron Smith was dispatched the same day and provided a reasonable quote the next day. As I was having the balcony rebuilt at the time with another contractor, I needed flexibility with the start date. Ron was more than accommodating and his crew arrived on-time with very short notice. The crew was professional, polite and friendly and performed the job within the agreed timeframe. In fact, I decided to have them replace the rest of my leaky gutters and downspouts on the house. Again, the estimate was reasonable and the work performed as agreed. During demolition of the old system, we realized that the original wooden fascias had no paint or primer and were subject to rot in the damp coastal climate. The crew stopped work without complaint, so that I could address this on my own. They even lent me a ladder with built-in levelers, which made the challenge of roof access from my mostly-uphill side yard a cinch. I contacted Hargens to get an estimate for our project. They came over and looked at what we needed to be done. but as soon as they found out they were not the only one giving us an estimate for our project they got mad. I called them later on to see if they had an estimate like they said they would, but all they did was to blow-me-off on the phone remidnding me that "oh yeah the one that had other contractors for estimates, we are not intrested on your project". They are not professional contractors, they are just a bunch of cry babies who dont accept the realities of the construction world. As a homeowner I need to get estimates to see various contractors, is just common sense. I called tom back again and told him that is no way to treat a possible constumer. I dont have time to writte reviews, but I just didnt like the way this contractor treat constumers with common sense to shop around. if you want to go ahead and do the right thing by getting estimates, just dont mention that to hargens, they will just walk away !! good luck and be very carefull who you hire for construction projects. read more

My HOA hired Hargens to repair damage to my master bath from leakage from the closet bend of the toilet above, and I hired them for an architect-designed upgrade. Hargens work was unsatisfactory: they blew the schedule, could not follow the working drawings, and finally were fired by the architect. I called Hargens to fix and clean my gutters last month and I can honestly say I was extremely satisfied with their work. Ron came out to give me a quote on the job. He knew exactly what needed to be done to the gutters and was very professional and knowledgeable and made recommendations. Once I accepted the quote, Kevin came out the next week to do the work. He explained what he was going to do and how long it would take. Once the work was done, Kevin cleaned up to the point I couldn't even tell I had work done on my gutters.
