Came in on Sunday, thought it might be busy but was able to get a table right away. Excellent atmosphere and very cozy. Wait staff is friendly and not over bearing. Very reasonable prices on food for what you are getting. I got the eggs Benedict, one of my favorites where ever I go. I will tell you this is one of the best I've ever had. I don't prefer my eggs to be running all over the plate and they did an excellent job of balancing a little bit of yoke but also keeping it firm where a majority stays right in the egg. I came down here with a co-worker for lunch and an urgent need to get out of the office for a little while. Harley's Old Thyme Café is located at the corner of Old Seward and 76th Ave. across from Mr. Prime Beef in a tiny strip mall. It was here that Andrew, our Yelp community leader, hosted an OYE last year which was a lot of fun and where I met several of my fellow local Yelpers for the first time in person. The dining area is small yet cozy with a number of comfortable booths against the wall on one side. The employees here are very friendly and welcoming just as they were the last time I was here for the event. We were seated at one of the booths and given a couple of minutes to place our order. The place started to fill up with more diners as the lunch rush was underway. I felt the need to go with a brunch-style meal. I ordered the Catfish Platter with a side of grits, two eggs over-medium, along with a cup of tartar sauce and a slice of watermelon as an added complement. My co-worker ordered the same and we only had to wait at a reasonable time while the employees were taking care of other orders at a steady pace. One the plates arrived, I was immediately blown away by how delicious the breaded catfish filets tasted. I have not tasted catfish this good since my visit to the Dixie House in Greensboro, NC back in 2014 before moving to Anchorage for school. The filets were deep-fried and lightly breaded with the restaurant's own version of a Panko blend. Having this with the Southern grits brought back memories of the diners in Raleigh, NC where it is the main special on every menu. The next item I have to try on my next visit is their beef brisket. This is the most popular item which also comes with their own secret recipe sauce. There are a wide variety of innovative food items off the beaten path well worth sampling. The ones that jumped out at me were the Chicken/Apple Sausage platter (sliced and sautéed with fresh mushrooms and scrambled eggs with a generous sprinkling of parmesan cheese), the Harley Cakes (this was offered as a sample at the Yelp event and they are absolutely delicious especially as a breakfast plate with eggs, toast, and bacon), Joe's Special (from a restaurant called Joe's in San Francisco, a seasoned dish consisting of ground beef, eggs, and spinach), and the Say Cheese Cheese Cheese Omelette (two eggs folded over with aged cheddar, mozzarella, and Velveeta cheese sauce...what a combo!). I am SO glad I finally was able to have breakfast here. Top Notch. Probably my new "default" for this type of dining, even though it is a bit of a drive for me. VERY large portions for the prices. Chicken Fried Steak is OBVIOUSLY made there, and everything else was just delicious. Bacon perfectly cooked. And while I would not order a Harley Cake myself as a main course, I know MANY who love sweet breakfasts - and they are incredible. This is the only place in Anchorage that I have been to since my return that I will deliberately order hash browns over other options. I will be back. And will start reviewing different dishes. My son and I came to try for breakfast and I would give it 3.5 stars if I could. I took a star off for the worst sourdough pancakes I've tasted. I know my sourdough and these tasted like raw yeasty bread dough with the consistency of a regular but small dry pancake. And they were not hot, either. I would encourage them to do some research and experiment with other ways of making their pancakes because these were just plain bad when they don't have to be. A sourdough pancake should have some chew to it (due to all the protein in the sourdough) and a tangy sour flavor with light bubbles in the cakes themselves which comes from the fermentation and chemical reaction with the baking soda (if used). The eggs Florentine were really good, the eggs poached perfectly and the sauce was delicious with fresh spinach and ripe tomatoes. My son had a big French toast stack with bacon. The bacon was good quality but it was baked and had that old greasy taste that bacon gets when it's been sitting around being kept warm instead of being cooked fresh. I loved the coffee mugs - big and hot and custom logo for their place. I was shocked to see the hot coco cost so much. It tasted like swiss miss and water but maybe they make it with milk... I didn't ask. But I like they didn't make it so hot for my son, that was thoughtful and the mug was really big. Over all, I liked it! The food was big and generous and the service was very nice. Not in a hurry kind of place so know that going in. I would go back again and try lunch or some thing else. read more

Regular customer I come here a lot for breakfast but I won't be coming here anymore. I got an omelette today and while eating, I noticed a nice long black hair. This isn't the first time either; I found one on my toast months ago and dismissed it since they were busy and it could have been an accident. This is disgusting. I ordered the Denver omelette, it came out in a timely manner looked a little smaller than most of the omelettes I get at other restaurants. After the first few bites, I realized that it was mostly onions rather than ham as the main ingredient. It literally had about three or four small pieces of ham in it and five or six big chunks of onions. Not quite what I expected. Not sure if I want to go back anytime soon read more

So, it's been a few years since my 1st review of Harley's, and I can't say anything has changed. The pecan caramel pancakes are worth putting up with the lackadaisical service, but this is definitely not a place to come if you need to get in and get out fast. I've never seen them slammed and I've never seen them hurry for anything. The hours are weird and not actually accurate. They close the kitchen more like 4:15-4:30, so I guess you won't be lingering over your cup of coffee come 5pm! I'm working on my own version of Harley cakes so that I don't have to interrupt whatever the staff is doing instead of waiting tables. After my last visit, I can tell you that it certainly wasn't cleaning! Take a look at the air ducts. You might rethink your visit too! read more

I've been going to Harley's since the 90's!! I'm really not THAT old, but this place is THAT good!! I use to frequent on Tuesday's because that was the day they had Brisket as the daily special, so I'd meet my dad there for lunch! I believe it's changed owners over the years, whether it has or hasn't, their brisket is still awesome 20+ years later! I've met friends and family there for breakfast many times and have never been disappointed. It's small, quiet, service is good and the food is home cooking excellence!! I can only speak for the brisket, mashed potatoes and corn for lunch because... well... that's what I want every time I go! Harley was one of the original Little Rascals from the Our Gang series back in the 1930's. His restaurant is filled with photos and memorabilia from the series. On Sundays, Harley himself will quite often work the restaurant cooking and serving some very good pecan waffles. If you have fond memories of the Our Gang series I recommend it. They are open for Breakfast and Lunch; I am not sure about dinner. As far as the food, it's good. Nothing spectacular. They serve your normal diner food such as burgers, turkey, chicken and salads. They have a large number of sides with a southern flair. This is a very small restaurant so it can get crowded during lunch hour. God Bless Harley. Obviously an old-skool Anchorage establishment that has stood the test of time. Head over to Harley's Old Thyme Cafe and have a nice solid, standard breakfast at standard Alaskan prices. It's a cute diner, generally speaking, pretty worn down, and obviously the booths have seen quite a few large Alaskan diners over the years. My friend had raved about this place, so I figured we'd give it a shot. The service was good, the food was pretty standard fare (not bad, not mind blowing, just standard). I'm sure there are a lot of loyal locals that love Harley's. Place hasn't probably changed a single piece of anything in 20 years, and that's exactly how they like it. It's a decent place to bring the family, but for me, if I'm having breakfast in Anchorage, I'm going to Snow City or Middle Way Cafe. Just brighter, more upbeat, and more lively. read more

Sourdough pancakes are not made with real sourdough starter mix. They were just regular pancakes made with regular pancake mix. They also tasted stale and a little dry. When I asked about the pancakes to the waiter he argued with me about sourdough pancakes. Growing up in Alaska I know what sourdough pancakes are, and these are false advertisement. read more
