Opened in 1984, Harris' Restaurant is one of those San Francisco classic steakhouses. I came here with my friend after seeing a video on eating at the bar, but we opted for the dining room. The restaurant leans into old-school elegance, with plush booths, soaring ceilings, brass chandeliers, and live music adds to the timeless atmosphere. Service was excellent! The bar has a darker, almost library-like vibe, while the dining room feels brighter, like a conservatory. It's giving 1950s charm--but with a twist, since the restaurant is only dating back to the '80s. And it even has a legacy restaurant seal on the front of their building.

A classic steakhouse! Less crowded than house of prime rib nary a block away. The service and ambiance feels like a time capsule, what I imagine the Ritz Carlton from the early 2000s nailed in having ceremonious hospitality feel normal. This is not a flashy restaurant vying to capture the instagram crowd. This is an establishment weathering decades, though I will say Harris' carries the faint sterility and stiffness of a hotel lobby. I would probably choose a different cut from the porterhouse next time. This is a splurge meal for an occasion if you are looking to cosplay what millenials romanticize as old money.

I've been coming to Harris' for years now and have nothing but fantastic things to say about this restaurant. I hosted my birthday dinner here, date nights, dinner with friends and colleagues, etc. and the service has always been impeccable. The wait staff is incredibly kind and willing to accommodate any changes or requests. They are also more than happy to recommend some of their faves on the menu. My favorite dish to get is the New York steak (medium rare) with creamed spinach and scalloped potatoes. The steaks are always amazing and I stand by this being my favorite steak in the city! I highly recommend visiting Harris' for the best steak in the city. Reservations fill up fast but I typically haven't had issues getting a table within a week's notice. If you are willing to have a later dinner (after 8:30pm), you can probably get a same day table!

I don't know if they just messed up my meal but my steak was charred and dry despite being rare on the inside. Just an average experience for me. Valet was nice, 19$ flat rate. If you don't have cash you pay at the bar and leave a tip on the receipt. I was just disappointed with my steak. I ended up cutting off the burnt edges. Pricey place.

I want to give this place 100/10 for service!!! I want to start with they did a coat check, and unfortunately my coat got some sticky stuff stuck to my coat. Their restaurant manager immediately apologized and tried to use gin to wipe the glue off for me, and then he gave me his card and asked me to email him for compensation after I got my coat dry clean. Oh also before we left, he immediately recognized us and went to get our coat. He's seriously the most professional and sweetest person (and really good memories) I have ever met in a restaurant! Shout out to him! Agh I wish I remember his name!! But we went there on Dec 14,2025 around 7pm (I think)! I'm thankful for his amazing help! Now for the food, I'm loving every bit of it! I got a ribeye and my husband got a NY steak. They both cooked perfectly and seasoned so well! The scallops potatoes were so creamy and the sauce was soaked into the potatoes. The drinks were kinda strong and yummy! Didn't taste much of alcohol! I felt a little bit of buzzed but maybe I drank it so fast before the food came! Hehe! I love that they have live music there and the whole place decorated so Christmas vibe!!

Crab Cakes Combo mushrooms and onion ring

Came here on a Thursday night and really glad we made a reservation since there was already a line forming when they opened. The service was great. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Food took a little while to come out but that's expected at a nice sit-down spot like this. We started with the fried mushroom and onion which were super crispy and not greasy. The soy sauce it came with was a little basic though, I kinda wished there was an aioli or something more flavorful on the side. We also tried the crab cake. I usually don't like bell peppers but the flavor still turned out really good and it was packed with actual crab meat. I got the Harris steak with evening potatoes and it was amazing!! The steak was seasoned well and cooked perfectly. The potatoes were creamy and pillowy inside and had really good flavor too. My boyfriend ordered the prime rib and enjoyed it a lot. The outer part was a little too salty for us but the smoky flavor and tenderness made up for it.

From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere sets the tone. The restaurant is spacious, clean, and beautifully lit, with warm lighting that complements the rich wood interiors perfectly. Every corner feels intentional. I especially loved the mix of seating throughout the restaurant, cozy booths, classic tables, and bar seating that gives the place a lively yet refined energy. Reservations are highly recommended and for good reason. One of the coolest details is being able to see the steaks aging through the window, it instantly builds trust and excitement before the food even hits the table. Now, the food. We had Harris' Steak and the Ribeye and both were exceptional. Perfectly cooked, incredibly juicy, and packed with deep, beefy flavor. You can tell these steaks are treated with care, well seasoned, expertly prepared and served with confidence. The steak tartare was beautifully presented and full of flavor, fresh, balanced, and rich without being overwhelming. It was one of those dishes where you pause for a second after the first bite because it's just that good. To drink, we went with Kir Royales, which were crisp, refreshing and elegant. The perfect pairing for a classic steakhouse dinner. Overall, the dishes were not only flavorful and well prepared, but also visually appealing, which added to the experience. This is food meant to be savored, not rushed. Harris' isn't just a place to eat, it's a place to sit back, enjoy the ambiance, and treat yourself to a proper steakhouse experience. If you're looking for quality cuts, a polished atmosphere and food that absolutely delivers, this spot belongs on your list. Highly recommend.

Crab cakes. $31. Very crabby.

Valet parking for $19 is a good option if you arrive after 6 PM; by then, there is nothing on-street, and the local garages are just as expensive. The food run-down: - 4.8/5: Crab cakes $31. Excellent. Very little filler, and very crab-flavored. The coating is perfectly crunchy, and the sauce is great. - 4.7: House red wine: $14. It's great when the generic house red wine is superb. It's dressy. They have live jazz every night in the bar/lounge, and the acoustics are great. Here's the Jazz Schedule: - Tue/Wed: Ken French Duo 6-9:30 - Thu: Kent Strand Trio 6:30-9:40 - Fri: Gaea Schell Trio 7-10 - Sat: Trio 7-10:30 - Sun: Ken Muir Duo 6-9:30

Extra Dirty Martini w/ Blue Cheese Filled Olives

What an experience! As a first-timer, I am very happy that I went during their Holiday setup because the decor is stunning especially with their already established interior. Low-Lightning, vintage-y classic interior, very elegant. There are 2 sides to the restaurant, 1 near the bar and live music (pianist), the other side is your classic sit-down dining; calmer and more quiet. Staff is very professional and quick, attentive to your needs throughout the entire evening. Our waiter was so sweet. To begin, I had a extra dirty martini with gin and blue cheese filled olives. Blue cheese is not as strong with sitting inside of the martini, but they definitely do not hold back on the filling. Cesar Salad was delicious, topped with crunchy croutons and a slice of anchovy. For my main course, I went with the Petite Filet Mignon and it was absolutely amazing. Plain, as-is, the meat had so much flavor and was just cooked to perfection. Every bite was amazing! Paired with their sugar snap peas and mashed potatoes along with a side of their Creamed Spinach, I was very well pleased with it all. Definitely a must try!

I've been wanting to come here for a longgggg time and this spot didn't disappoint! We got appetizers, split an entree, and split dessert. The entree was huge so I'm glad we split! Everything was flavorful. Loved the NY T-Bone, creamed spinach, special potatoes. Sitting in the bar was great. Wonderful service. I'll be back!

Half a dozen fresh oysters on the half shell

Came here with my hubby on a date night and place is very old fashioned but in a great way. The dining room was elegant and the lights were dimmed. Everyone greeted us and seated us right away. Reservation is a must as this place fills up quickly. Our host was very nice and walked us through the menu. We started with the half a dozen of fresh oysters and crab cakes. The oysters were small but fresh and sweet. The crab cakes were just delicious with the Beurre Blanc. For our main dish I had the Rib eye and my hubby had the Roast prime rib, The Executive Cut. The portions were huge and the meat was tender and delicious!!! For our dessert we had the Baked Alaska. That was okay. Not what I thought it would be but it was a little too dense for me. Overall we had a very good dinner and we were very full. We also had leftovers! If you're looking for a great prime rib and you're by this area, this is the place to be.

Ambiance is exactly what you'd expect! Classic American steakhouse with impeccable service and experience. That's definitely the highlight! Food is decent, but if you're looking for eye opening steaks, I'd probably look elsewhere. But that's not to say that Harris' is subpar by any means. This is the perfect place for celebrations of any event! We ordered the ribeye and 49er cut. Meat was thick and plentiful, though a little dry. It tasted exactly as how you'd expect--steak! The sides could use some more seasoning, but albeit that's something you could add on later. Overall had a well rounded experience here.

Harris' is the kind of classic steakhouse experience that's getting harder and harder to find -- and they do it perfectly. From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere is stunning: a gorgeous antique Brunswick mahogany bar, live piano jazz, and an elegant dining room lined with deep leather banquettes that feels timeless and refined. The entire place has that old-school San Francisco charm that immediately makes the evening feel special. The service was absolutely first-class -- attentive, professional, and warm without ever feeling rushed. And the food? Outstanding. The steak was beautifully prepared and exactly what you hope for from a legendary steakhouse. What really says it all: I enjoyed the experience so much that I came back again the very next night. If you're visiting San Francisco and want a truly classic steakhouse experience, Harris' is a must-visit. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Harris' Restaurant Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Harris' Restaurant

Is there a cake slicing fee if we bring in our own cake?

Yes

Is there bar seating and can a seat be reserved for one?

Yes there is a bar and lounge area. Reservation for one may not be required, but they will certainly take it.

What is acceptable dining attire?

Attire is nice or business casual. Nice jeans or khaki's dressed up on top are fine. Shorts, hats, flip-flops, and overly athletic wear are not permitted in the Main Dining Room. Our Piano Lounge walk-in tables are more casual.

If you show up at opening will they take walk ins? If so how long will you wait?

There are tables for dinner saved for walk-ins... No wait as long as a table is available.

Should I make a reservation if I plan to go on Fridays between 5pm-7pm?

Yes.

Is proof of vaccination still required? 7/22

It was not required last time we were there.

Do you offer outdoor dining for non vaccinated people?

No, they don't have outdoor dining. All of San Francisco requires vaccination card (some need booster as well) for indoor dining. Not all have outdoor dining. Best to be vaccinated if you visit San Francisco!

Do they offer dine in as of Aug 2021?

Yes, they do. You must provide proof of vaccination to dine. We just had a fabulous dinner there last night, highly recommended.

What is the corkage fee?

40$ for up to 2 bottles.

Are they offering dine in?

No. They were open for awhile but then San Francisco shut down again. I got the opportunity to eat there on my Birthday in October. Great as always and they hadn't raised their prices

What do the take out Menu look like?

The whole menu is available for takeout. It can be found at Harrisrestaurant.com. Let me know if you have any questions about the menu.

The quality is always on point (you get what you pay for) and the process is easy to preorder. The main thing to plan for is the long wait in line to pick up your preorder. In prior years, I've usually picked up on Christmas Eve and the wait can exceed 90 mins to 2 hours depending on when you arrive - this is the case even when you doorbust at opening time. This year, we picked up on the 23rd and arrived around opening time, and it only took 30 minutes. There are also very high quality pantry goods to peruse and purchase, including pasta, mustards, spices, tinned goods, etc. Onto the meat: I preordered late this year so got 21 day aged prime rib roast (would usually aim for 45+ days), but honestly it was hard to tell the difference. I would recommend requesting for one of their tables instead. The restaurant has very dim lighting, but you can still appreciate the beautiful interior/decor. The servers are extremely nice and gave great descriptions + recommendations. We ordered the ceviche de pescado, artichoke, pulpo, croquetas, roasted cauliflower, yuca fries, Ojo de bife - ribeye steak, Bife con papas, and gaucho. The ceviche was everyone's favorite appetizer, with fried corn was unique and balanced out the acidity of the ceviche. The yuca fries and cauliflower were basic dishes that I wouldn't order again for the price. The artichoke was a bit of a disappointment as it was more difficult to eat than expected. The char on the artichoke was a bit too overpowering as well. The main dishes were great! All the beef was done to perfection and melted in your mouth. The fries that come with the bife con papas were extremely flavorful and had a good crisp that made it very addicting. For dessert, we ordered the churros, apples crostata, and chocolate cake. The churros themselves were average, but the side caramel and chocolate sauces were surprisingly not overly sweet. The chocolate cake was decadent and moist -- would recommend if you like a dense cake. The apples crostata had great flavor from the apples and the sweetness from the apples were nice with the ice cream on top. Personally, I would just get the chocolate cake again.

Filet Mignon is Medium Rare Perfection... Beautiful pink center, warm red ring, crust that had a nice sear. The Bordelaise sauce was rich, slightly sweet, and had that deep red-wine reduction thing going on. But the steak itself had zero salt. The sauce tried its best, but a steak shouldn't need to be drowned to have flavor. M&L Burger. Juicy, But Also... Juicy? That's It. But again: no seasoning. The beef itself was bland. There was a bacon jam or sauce on it that added some smokiness, but when I took a bite without it (just to test), I was met with... nothing. Just wet, unseasoned meat. Parmesan Truffle Fries were legit, crispy, hot, tossed in enough parmesan and truffle. The portion was huge (feeds 2-3 easily). Black Truffle Mac & Cheese. First few bites? Creamy, luxurious, black truffle shavings. But by the fourth or fifth forkful, it got heavy. Missing acid. A little hit of something sour like lemon, would have saved it. Also, the pasta was overcooked. Peaches & Crème Tart was Aggressively sour. The peaches were fine, but the yuzu sauce underneath was so overwhelmingly acidic that it felt like a prank. My face scrunched up like I'd bitten into a live battery. The crème was there somewhere, but it got completely bulldozed. One bite was enough. I left the rest. My dentist would approve. If you do go, order the fries, bring your own salt grinder, and skip the tart unless you enjoy punishment. Service was great btw.
