Spur of the moment road trip for seafood. We had been here 2 years ago. Not sure why we waited to come here again. The food is so good. I ordered the sea scallop dinner and K ordered the fish n chips dinner. Very fresh and yummy! The staff behind the scenes very friendly and fast. The only eating area are picnic tables. No indoor dining. They were very busy here. The most popular item seems to be their burgers. Next trip. Plus the have Gilbert's ice cream. We passed. I highly recommend coming here. This is one of the quintessential New England food stands. You've got your burgers, dogs, clam strips and Connecticut-style lobster rolls. And fries. But as others have mentioned, the wait for the food can be brutal. We waited nearly 40 minutes for our food. Sure, it was a pleasant enough evening but that kind of wait just makes you hangry. The food itself is good quality food stand. I like the burger that I got even if it was well-done. The chili on it was a nice change. Good 1/4 lb size. The scallops were a bit hit too though a bit greasy. Big and juicy ones though. Overall, it was an enjoyable meal but the wait knocks this off a 5 star perch. Harry's Place is a must in CT! For many years they have served the most delicious burgers and crinkle cut fries. For wheat free people you can request a lettuce wrap instead of the bun. The burgers are seared on a hot griddle and the fries are cooked to perfection. They also have all sorts of other food like fried clam strips, ice cream, milk shakes, and more. When I worked in Colchester a few years back quite a few summer lunches were at Harry's. I'm glad to see that it survived Covid and that things haven't changed much. Great hand made burgers, great hot dogs, a classic road side burger joint. I'm particularly fond of the chili cheese fries. All dining is out doors so pick a nice day. If you want a beer to wash down your dogs stop at a package store before you get there. Definitely worth a stop if you're driving through Colchester. read more

Always a must stop when I'm driving through Colchester. The burgers are fantastic but its the fires and onion rings that call me back time and again. Kids always love the hot dogs and chicken strips. Outstanding! Haven't been here in over 4 years and couldn't wait to get a burger from here. I don't know how they do it - burgers are rolled into a ball, look like they're barely seasoned, and they squish them down on the griddle, flipping them only once. The juices are sealed inside, and its mouth-wateringly tasty! I had to make up words just to describe how delicious this burger is. The fries portions are super generous. If you want a milkshake or ice cream they are great for this, too. Location is seasonal - 5-6 months a year you cannot indulge. When the weather breaks and they finally open, expect a wait and quite a line on the weekends. Even during the week for lunch! I first came to Harry's over 30 years ago when I was in college and today when I visit it still offers the same roadside food that I have come to expect and love. Where else can you get a clam strip dinner for only $9.25? And it's cooked perfectly. I consider myself somewhat of a French fry connoisseur and these French fries are soooo frickin good and they give you a huge portion. They are cooked to a golden brown crisp perfection. I understand why people think the hamburgers look small but they are still super tasty. Mine was not over cooked as someone else mentioned and it was filling. There are plenty of picnic tables in the back as well as parking. The little ones love to run around on the grass and play on the tree stumps. read more

I've been enjoying hotdogs at Harry's since I was 5 years old. I remember because with my many siblings, dogs were a nickel or so cheaper than burgers., and my fathers restaurant budget was limited. There were 2 parents and 5 kids. That was almost 75 years ago. I stopped by Harry's this past weekend and had a couple chili dogs. They were as good as always but the chef on duty put the mustard, relish chili and onions on the bottom and the hot dog on top. The bottom of the bun split open because of condiments and warm chili softened the bun to split open making it a bit harder to eat. Please change that if it is your new policy. I think that probably many other hot doggers want the dog dressed and not the bun. This may seem a frivolous note. It is important to serve it in the typical fashion of everything on top. Leave it up to us, the consumers, to do our individual balancing acts and enjoy eating our hot dogs our way. read more

We love Harry's place and after being " sequestered," in Juneau, ALASKA for over a year we were thrilled to be in town, visiting family and all wanted Harry's. Two of my co-workers live in Colchester, and invariably when our conversations turn to Yelp, they always ask me "Have you been to Harry's yet?" Well today, we had some errands to run in East Hartford and Glastonbury, and with lunchtime calling, we drove a few miles down Route 2 and made our first ever visit to Harry's. I just loved it! It's an old-time burger stand/clam shack. Old -time is a good description, because it goes back to 1920. You order at a long counter with multiple stations, and your name is announced and your food is picked up on the far left. We both ordered a lobster roll, they were $13.95 each, and they were one of the very best values I have run into in a long time. It was absolutely PACKED with lobster meat, not shreds, but big meaty claws everywhere. It was piled high and filled the grilled buttered roll from side to side. No low spots anywhere -it was incredible, We get lobster rolls down on the shore and they usually run $16 to $18 dollars. Sometimes you a get bag of chips or a thimble full of slaw included, but seriously, who cares about slaw or chips? It's the lobster we care about. And no lobster roll I have ever had gave me more lobster meat per dollar than Harry's. We did split a small order of rings ($3.25) and they were primo as well. Real onions, not the minced up deep fried gelatinous mucilage that sometimes pass as an onion ring. They were great. A few things to bear in mind, if you'll be visiting. 1) Cash only (they have an ATM on site). 2) No indoor seating, but they have dozens of tables all over the place. 3) They are open from March through October with extended hours from Memorial Day to Labor Day. I'm not sure what to make of Harry's. Good spot for ice cream, and I'd have no qualms about getting some there again (or a shake). We drive by quite a bit, and I'd always mumble "Hey, we still haven't gone there other than for ice cream!" I love cheap, guilty date spots like Harry's. Particularly ones with such notoriety. Certain surrounding towns have places of similar notoriety. I won't mention HERE which ones, but I would definitely prefer some of those if location isn't a deciding factor. Where was I....oh, yea. Ice cream? Good spot. The rest? Let's just say I left this last time wondering if the ratings are simply because it's a cult classic that a ton of people love due to growing up going there on dates or to visit high school/college friend employees. My burger was overdone and kind of bland. Neither good nor bad. The chicken sandwich was equally plain and over-cooked. The onion rings were about average. Harry's seems like such a great place. I feel a bad writing this, but at the same time, Harry's isn't going anywhere. Every time we go by it seems to be very successfully catering to it's niche market. An adorable old fashioned food stand in the heart of Connecticut. My friends recently moved up here and they strongly suggested that we try this place and I'm so happy they did. The line was long due to popularity but it moved fairly quickly. The menu offers a variety of burgers, hot dogs, and even lobster rolls when they are in season. We also ordered the chili cheese fries which were the bomb! Burgers were fresh and delicious. The wait time for the food being ready is usually long but the cashier lets you know this prior to ordering. It took about 45 mins for our food to come out but thankfully there's plenty of outdoor seating. Our drinks and milk shakes were ready first so we had something to drink during our wait. How have I not written this review yet! Great burgers, great fries, and really great onion rings! AND icecream, how can you beat that? They do double and triple burgers these days for folks with bigger appetites. It's a national historical landmark so if you're visiting from somewhere afar you should go if you're in the area. The hubby and I always bring friends from out of town for a visit. Lots of outdoor seating. Cash only but there's an ATM right there at the counter. Well I can say I've finally been to Harry's.... I have heard alot of hype about this place through the years. I tried the fried whole belly clams and an order of onion rings. The clams were decent but not as good as some other places I have gone to. They didn't have that slight brinyness that I like. The Onion Rings were a little on the oily side. I guess next time I come here I'll stick with burgers or soups since that is what pretty much everyone else was ordering...So next time a Lemming I will be and follow the masses. read more

Classic American roadside joint, much, MUCH love for that. Small overpriced burgers that were too thick and overdone-dry. they asked me after the order was up if I " want salt and pepper on (your) burger" ...........You're supposed to do this before the burger goes on grill. I said 'yes of course' and they put a nominal bit of S&P on the single, broken bacon piece and white american cheese that sat on top of that dry, overdone patty, finished with a non heated, dry bun. Yikes Wife had the "Kraut Dog" I had a bite, seemed like it wasn't all beef, no snap. pass. Hard pass. I respect and love non chain joints that are individually run, but this was terribad. Sorry. First time going after driving past for 20 years. Ordering was easy. Sat for a bit while previous orders we called out and served up. But why no paging / intercom system? Orders were called out while bikes with loud pipes drive by. We ordered burgers, fries and onion rings. Rings and fries were OK. Burgers were just a patty of unseasoned beef on an un-toasted bun. Sorry to have to report that you can only coast on your reputation for so long while making inferior that which you serve your customers. The burgers were blah and smaller than I remember them. The rolls were tasteless. They used to be made by a local Colchester baker. Now? The order was botched. We ordered onions on all four burgers. Two came without.
