Hartz is a very nostalgic place for me, it was my first job at 14. And I still love their food at 60+ years old... and NO I'm not gonna tell you my exact age ;-) It may be a" Fast Food" place but, they know how to: Fry that okra to Texas perfection. Fry Chicken till that skin is the epitome of how it should be done and could teach a "Master Class" on how it should be done and still have the chicken be so deliciously tender and juicy you'll need an entire stack of napkins just to eat it. And the yeast rolls..... one of my jobs when I worked there..... I'd you've never had any.... your life is empty! They ARE truly made fresh every single day and I highly recommend building a sandwich with one, a bit of chicken and a bit of their gravy (the cream gravy is my preference, but please don't slap your momma cause she can't make it as good. And if you do, don't tell her where you got the 411 on that gravy from!) if you like fried fish then gotta try it too! My dad loved it! They also do a really good job with Liver and Gizzards. Well it's been a year since my last review. I can say this is still my favorite lunch place to eat. I even mention to other employees that work with me that we love it and bring them. Sometimes we look like it's a party with as many people that love to come with us. The food is always fresh. They never disappoint me. When I walk in I'm always greeted with a smile from the girls up front. Krista is the absolute sweetest. They always check on us to see if we are good. It is an older chicken restaurant but man the food is always fresh and hot. I seriously love my food so hot that it almost burns my mouth. Now that's hot and fresh. The fried fish is on point and crispy. The baked chicken is always juicy. The fried chicken and chicken strips are always fresh and hot. The flavor is always outstanding. Hats off to the cook!!!! The sides are endless. I love the country gravy over my mashed potatoes. They are so good. Did I mention the HOT FRESH ROLLS!!!! They melt in your mouth. So flipping good. Came here for some rolls. The lady told us it would be a 15 min wait... I went inside and asked for a drink to comp having to wait. I was told no. We could have went elsewhere where rolls were already hot, fresh, & instantly ready. Just something to think about next time you're serving customers in this hot Huston weather. Twice as much chicken for only a dollar more than KFC! Very good chicken buffet features Regular and Spicy chicken, chicken wings, chicken tenders and chicken livers. The chicken tenders must've been fried immediately after the livers, there was a peculiar "liver aftertaste" to them. Everything else was hot and perfect. Small amounts of vegetables (greens, mac and cheese, very spicy bbq beans) are also on the bar. "Salad" is simply lettuce with 10 different salad dressings. I hate you, Hartz chicken. Now our relationship in the past has been fairly amicable. For years, my family and I would come through the drive-thru, pick up a family size chicken tender meal, and you would give us more than generous bowls of dipping sauces of both ranch and honey mustard. We'd go home, enjoy the crispy tenders, along with the soft heaven of your gravy-topped mashed potatoes and corn-on-the-cob or fried okra. And the rolls! My husband's prized yeast rolls that you create from scratch and he eats 3 of in one sitting. All this for a little over $20! Until this week. I decided to get a fish dinner instead of partaking of the chicken. The fish was crispy and full of flavor, and the tartar sauce was just right. Okra was good as always, as was the corn. My daughter said the chicken tasted weird to her and ate some of my fish instead. Hubby said nothing, but he could eat roadkill and it wouldn't affect him negatively thanks to his strong constitution and dulled tastebuds. Fast forward two days....we have a fridge full of chicken, so I decide to eat some. Bad move. It did, indeed, taste "weird". Like old grease and something else I can't quite pinpoint. I ate four bites and tossed it. And in the dead of night, I woke up violently ill. I'm still giving you three stars because usually, the food is good and your employees are super nice. So nice, in fact, that my best friend from LA said she wished she got customer service in LA like I got at Hartz. The rolls at Hartz are well known by those who visit, and this location turns them out good as well - I always leave with a dozen when I get my order to go. The location shows it's age, but the quality of the establishment is shown in the food instead of the atmosphere. I recommend the buffet, which will run you $7.50 a person including tax. A drink is also included in the price, with unlimited refills. The buffet usually has Baked Chicken, Fried Chicken, fried fish, chicken tenders, hot wings, mashed potatoes, wheat rolls, corn bread, brown & cream gravy, vegetables, a salad bar, and a few other items. I've eaten here at several different times throughout the day, and everything is always fresh and hot (even in the non-busy hours of the afternoon between 2-4). They cycle the food on the buffet line frequently. I only gave it three stars, because the restrooms need some serious updating. They change owners about 2 to 3 years now.. It is not the same.. This is the worse that Hartz have ever been.. 1. The workers does not know how to take your order. 2. The owner tries to cheat you by confusing your order so she can charge you more. And if you cancel an item you're actually force to take the item and said the order has been made NO Changing your Mind!! What the?? 3. The buffet line is limited.. Ok listen to this.. When you're at at buffet don't you just go and pick out your selection?? Well in this case you can't.. You have to ask for the chicken.. Once again what the?? And there are hardly any sides in display.. You literally have to ask for it.. 4. Since this place is now run by a new owner it is not the same.. The owner is rude!! The owner tries to nickel and dime you.. The owner is very unprofessional.. And the owner is always arguing with her employees in front of customers.. 5. Hartz chicken does not taste like Hartz chicken how it's supposed too.. This place needs help!! Or new ownership.. This location is ruin Hartz name and taking it to the grave.. We've been getting this chicken to-go about once a month for the last 8 years or so. To say that it has drastically changed would be an understatement. I had my first experience here and let's just say that i personally feel like this place is a joke. The chicken tasted old, the sides were cafeteria-lunch line quality. My fried okra was mixed with french fries. Staff seemed clueless and the food was not worth coming back to. I didn't even eat here. I tried to order at the drive thru and a lady said, "Pull forward, I can't hear you!" They were serving someone else at the window for 15 minutes and by that time 2 cars had pulled in behind me so I was trapped. When it was finally my turn, I asked the lady if it was going to take another 15 minutes and she said, "Speaker is broken! Let me begin by saying I frequent this Hartz restaurant quite often for my family. On 11/19/2017 (Sunday), I was humiliated by Krista, she said she was the manager.  I'm not sure if that is true. I placed my order for chicken, okra and dinner rolls in the drive-thru. Once i made it to the window, I was asked if i would like to wait about 10 minutes for fresh chicken. I paid for my food. Then I was asked to pull around and someone would bring the order out to me. My food was brought out by Krista, she went over the order with me; however, she did not call out the okra I ordered. So she said, "Okra, hold let me go in to check."  She came back out to the car and she said, "She (cashier) didn't charge me, do you still want it?" I said "yes". She instructed me to pull around to pay for it. As i drove back around, 2 people were ahead of me.  As I approached the window, Krista was there. She told me my total. I paid for the order of okra.  As , she was passing the okra to me, I politely asked her can she add a few pieces of chicken or rolls for the inconvenience, she yelled at me "No, we will not give you anything. If you paid for it and we didn't give it to you then we would give you something."  I said "Ma'am I am only asking because I did not make a mistake, the cashier fail to ring me up, therefore, i had to wait longer than anticipated and why are yelling at me?"  She then said, "I am busy; you are holding me up; are we done?"  I then said "Where is the manager? She replied with an aggressive attitude "I am the manager and my name is Krista. If you want to report me, do it. The owner's name is David and he is out of town." I said "You possibly can't be the manager speaking to a customer this way". Yelling she says "I am the manager, do you want to see my certificate?" I then told her "I want names and phone numbers because you are very unprofessional and you as a manager should not ever speak to a customer the way that you are speaking to me.  As a manager you have the authority to make a wrong a right, therefore you can give items out by choice." She yells "I can't give you nothing, the owner said it. I am closing the window on you. I am busy" I pulled off and pulled around to return all items. As I walked in, I noticed I was the only customer in the restaurant. The cashier came to the counter. I must add she was polite. I requested my money back. She requested my debit card, to take care of the refund. I was given back my original receipts and the refund receipts for the 2 different transactions. She told me, I should get the refund within 3-5 days. As of date (11/27/17), the money has not been returned to my account.  Needless to say, I, family and friends will never return to another Hartz for the lack of unprofessionalism given to me as a customer. lost a valuable customer. read more

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE SERVICE. I WILL NEVER SPEND A DIME HERE AGAIN, AND WILL ENSURE MY COLLEAGUES WON'T EITHER. Establishment is due to open at 10:30, not a problem at all, guy (owner/manager)appears overtly annoyed by the presence of a consumer. He unlocks the door and flicks the "open" sign on, not even opening the door or welcoming me; hence I've been standing outside for a few minutes awaiting them to open. I approach the counter and it's as if I'm invisible to not only the guy that opens the door, but also to the guy behind the counter. Within 3 minutes he's the FIRST to open his mouth and say hello. I appreciated that and said I didn't even get a hello as I entered. The guy who unlocked the door began to yell and scream "Who do you think you are?" "What do you mean you did get a hello? You're not special?" I ask for the manager, he began being hostile and yelling that he is the manager and the owner. He began cursing me out telling me to get the f&ck out of his establishment, and using a bit of vulgarity that I know he wouldn't speak when or if he was outside of the establishment. My money will go elsewhere. Iif you're looking for a decent and always clean Hartz, I'd go to the one on 2920 or Jones and 290. This establishment is not in the best part of Cypress, maybe he feels he can speak to people as if they're less than; it's evident he's tired of "cleaning" as he has stated he couldn't say hello because he was "fu$king cleaning" Very argumentative, very immature, and very unprofessional guy. I live in Cypress and have gone here since I've moved and have NEVER encountered such distasteful service anywhere here. I guess I should go back to my neighborhood where one's dollar matters. read more

i went in today on my lunch break and order wings combo it took literally like 25 mins i ask for it fresh so i thought ok it's taking long because ei ask for it fresh. know they came out with some chicken with buffalo sauce thats not what i ask for they went back in and sent out other chicken and ask me was that it and she said it's hot be careful im thinking that it is so fresh chciken it was red in the inside like they just fried the chicken with the sauce on it. it was so greasy and horrible that was my first and last time going there and my fries where so cold and it was 10.00$ i could have went to mcdonalds aleast they make your stuff fresh and not recook your food! so disappoint but i learned my lesson you guys will not get my business sorry but not sorry and i am going to tell all my friends and family about this place i am so disappoint! read more

If you like spoiled chicken, this is the place for you. I can't count the times I've had to take chicken back to this place because it smelled and tasted spoiled. These are trully the nicest people I've had to serve me at a fast food place. They will always make it fresh for you every time. But unfortunately, they do not know how to tell when chicken has been marinating too long to where it starts to spoil. And from talking to them about it I learned even the manager doesn't like fried chicken. So no hope from improvement on that front. I've given them time and time and time again and unfortunately it hasn't helped. Don't get me wrong I've had it from there allot of times before and it wasn't spoiled. But I've also had it too many time where it was spoiled. It's all a gamble and I've decided not to gamble with my stomach ever again. Sorry my friends at Hartz, you have lost a really good customer.
