Let me start by saying I have never ever left a review of any restaurant anywhere and I am a huge foodie, I am confidant enough to say I have a superior palate. Before going here I read all the reviews and tried to convince my friends we should not go to this overpriced place with from what I read had awful food. Somehow I lost the battle and we ended up there last night at 8 pm. The place was busy but by no means crowded yet. Within minutes the nicest Israeli girl, Romi walked over to us and explained the menu which I must add had the priciest dishes I have ever seen, even more expensive then Le Bernadin. I didn't quite understand but I said let's just order a few things and go with it. We were already there...next our waiter came to the table introduced himself. He was outgoing, fun, honest... etc. He told us what to order if we were only going to order three things. We took his advice ordered the items and some drinks. The food was good, by no means great... if you are looking for just a great meal and nothing else don't go here. However what I do have to say about HaSalon is that I had one of the most fun nights I've had in NYC ever! By 10:00 the music got louder, energy filled the room, patrons were dancing on tables swinging napkins, Israeli music was playing., and the night turned out to be at A plus. Incredible spot! Ha salon is the coolest restaurant in NYC. Finally NYC has taken a book out of TLV's page! The food and ambiance are amazing but get ready for a pricey dinner. This isn't an every night dining spot, more for the fun occasional dinner or special event. You shouldn't miss this spot! Come prepared for the prices so you aren't shocked. If you are willing to spend the money you will have the best dinner and time! Be prepared to spend your night here- it's like going to a club but better! Amazing food and ambiance!!!!!! You have to know that you are paying and showing up for a super fun party - that happens to be in a restaurant that has tasty food. The bad reviews are not wholly unjustified, but they were clearly written by people who went expecting a fancy meal worthy of the high price tag of the dishes. Consider the prices on the menu to be inclusive of a cover charge, and you'll be cool with your experience. Here's how to approach HaSalon successfully: down a slice before arriving (to coat the stomach, you know the drill), order copious amounts of booze upon sitting down, dance your ass off when the music starts, and in between songs, take a few bites of some very well prepared dishes. My advice is to order a veg or two, maybe a pasta, and a couple of mains (if you're 4-5 people) and then get just drink the rest of your meal. The food was definitely good and ingredients were quality, fresh and lovingly assembled. However, again, you won't be happy if you come here for a Daniel-like experience. The service is spotty, the meal comes out in a totally random order, some things are tiny while others are huge, and some dishes are awesome (tomatoes, pici, lamb) and some are ridiculous (leek sashimi, what the f). But a Daniel experience is not what they're going for, and not what you should expect from this party spot. read more

I hosted a party for 22 people there a recent Saturday night. Everyone from the chef, whom we spoke to about the menu a few days prior, to the manager, Matton, to our principal waiter, Ben, were accommodating, genuinely hospitable and a delight to deal with. I could not have asked for better service from top to bottom. On top of that, the food was fabulous, the portions were generous, the music was fun and upbeat and the place was not overcrowded. WOW! What's not to love?? It's a restaurant, it's a nightclub (with the late seating), and it's a culinary collision of greatness in your mouth! Go for the atmosphere but don't even think about going without an appetite. This place is amazing. read more

The food was pretty good and the vibe was really fun. The food is definitely better than Lavo and Bagatelle. Unfortunately, they ran out of some food we ordered, but our waitress (Andrea) went above and beyond to comp some of our dishes and drinks to make up for that. Also, it took a LONG time for our main dish to arrive (they sent it to the wrong table) and reordered is a new "better cut" of steak. Took so long though !!! Hasalon is Best to celebrate an event with quite a few people, as opposed to a romantic date night. read more

Fantastic! It can be expensive but it's really your choice. Don't over-order. I have been to HaSalon in Israel and this location had a similar vibe. We sat at the kitchen counter right in front of Eyal Shani. Such a great treat to watch him - it's like art! Most of the servers and chefs are Israeli so we felt right at home. Our reso was at 8pm and classical music was playing when we arrived. By 10pm the music completely changed. Fantastic mix of Israeli and dance music. People were literally dancing on tables. I went to the sister restaurant,North Abraxas, in Tel Aviv (which was some of the best food we had ever had) because we couldn't get into HaSalon. I was so happy to see that it opened in NYC! My food was amazing! You have to be a little adventurous and be willing to try new things as the menu changes daily. If you're a picky eater, this probably not the place for you. There are many options for main dishes that can be shared. The grouper I shared was unreal as well as the ricotta clouds. We did send back the artichoke as it was not what thought it would be. It was just a cold whole artichoke with some sauce on the side. We also did order the Dinosaur (it's not really dinosaur) and it still was not at the table after we had finished eating the other food. Our lovely Israeli waitress Anot explained afterwards that that dish takes longer to be served. If we knew that we probably wouldn't have ordered it. She did apologize and offered free shots and dessert. Is it overpriced? Yes. I can't deny that fact, BUT you must go to the late seating. Around 9:30 the classical music starts to die down and the Israeli and fun dance music turns up! Let the party begin!! People dancing on tables and chairs, diners waving napkins, servers serving shots....Total fun!! You will NOT get this experience at the early seating. read more

My five girlfriends and I had the most amazing night at Hasalon's 2nd seating. The food was delicious and each item was a show in itself; flaming meats, pasta tossed right at our table, you get the point. The night wasn't cheap but it was an unforgettable evening that I'll never forget. The place literally turned into a party where people were dancing on their chairs & the staff set the bar on fire! 10/10 I'd go again. Worth every penny. read more

Loved the place! Great atmosphere, cool crowd, fun music. The food was absolutely delicious, I recommend going a little earlier to eat peacefully before you dance on tables and start drinking shots. I wish it would stay open longer, but unfortunately at around 12:30 it closes. The staff was really sweet and the wait time for the table was not long. read more

Great vibe and good food. Attended a birthday party this past weekend. The waiters were very receptive and accommodating to my needs. The night began with background music and dinner and by about 10:30 turned into a club. You get the best of both worlds here food/drinks and dancing. read more

More hype than anything else. Based on the resume of the chef, the difficulty of attaining a reservation, the cancellation policy and several other factors, we decided to jump in. HaSalon seems like a nice place; albeit the menu looks like it was written by a 4 year old. Unfortunately the chef's vibe doesn't jive with food allergies. If you are even remotely allergic to nuts, shellfish, sesame seeds -- or anything else -- do not go there. You may very likely die. They "cannot guarantee" your survival, and will send a nice, young Israeli man to tell you just that. After alerting my server to my severe nut allergy, said man pulled up a chair to sit down and explain to me that while they don't cook with nuts or nut oils, the kitchen staff are so flagrantly disrespectful of potentially life-threatening allergies, that they can't take any inkling of precaution to guarantee paying customers' safety. He went on to explain that "nothing's happened yet" (though the restaurant has only been open for 3 months). They made little effort to keep me and my family at the establishment before letting us walk out to find another dining option on an otherwise quiet, Memorial Day weekend evening. I hate to say it, but HaSalon is without a doubt going to kill someone in NYC before the year is out. I wish you all the best. read more

My wife and I eat out as much as any couple in the city possibly could (every night) at all price points. We made the rare mistake of booking this reservation without reading any of the early reviews. They are true and then some. I believe this may be the worst value for money at any restaurant in the city. No issues spending on a great meal, but this had great meal pricing for underwhelming quality. We ate at the counter at 6:30pm and yes it's weird. From classical music at a normal volume, to no music at all for a long stretch to classical music blasted at oddly loud volume. The worst part of the meal was watching the health code violations all night long. The head chef was composing dishes with his bare hands (I'm okay with that) and then popping little bites of the food he's making in his mouth, fingers on tongue, then continuing to shape the food on a customer's plate. Not okay with that! And he did it repeatedly, and I saw his sous chefs doing the exact same thing. I've NEVER seen that at any chefs counter and it's our preferred seat. Then he took some sort of delivery box from the back and put it on his cutting board and cut off a piece of cardboard for some reason. This was a used box that appeared to have gone through the delivery process (warehouse, truck, etc...)!!! And we were unfortunate enough to be seated directly in front of the octopus that they just have out all night long. They take a tentacle when they need one and place it back on the counter inches from our food. And, at one point in the evening it fell off its perch landing dangerously close to one of our dishes. Unacceptable food safety practices, I can't understand why they haven't been shut down already. Finally we were smart enough not to order the $120 sashimi plate, but we watched it being made. We love we'll done Japanese, these guys didn't even have a proper knife. Fish was cut far too thick, soy sauce was just drizzled all over the final product, just not right. I had assumed we would be experiencing the chef's Israeli dishes, a cuisine we also love, but this meal had no discernible theme. read more

This is a review of the bar as the restaurant had not yet fully opened. I very rarely post reviews but I feel compelled in this case due to the bracingly horrific nature of the experience. I have never in 20+ years of going out at some of the finest spots in NYC and other expensive cities felt as absolutely taken advantage of as by this dumpster fire of an establishment. $21 for an utterly flat Tanqueray and tonic. $50 for an obscenely meager pour of Clase Azul blanco tequila (most places charge $22-$30 for a standard pour). All served in prison quality glassware. And then something called bruschetta. The chef should be sued for culinary defamation. A piece of bread that can only be described as something like Texas toast out of your supermarket freezer case with perhaps one wan looking tomato chopped with some acrid olive oil and what had to have been jarred jalapeños. Served on a piece of gold cardboard. No napkins. No plate. No kidding. All in what can only be charitably described as a hovel of a meth motel on 10th Avenue. $87 for the three items I mentioned. I am still appalled. This place is a blot on the city. read more
