I've written a review for this place before, but today I went there and I was really impressed. I was kinda aggravated because someone really did a dumb move and hindered me for 2 minutes in traffic, and I had to calm myself down because everything is really tense at the moment, y'know? And when I pulled up to the drive thru, the person in front of me asked a question about the beers and the guy told her a description of each beer. I was annoyed at first, but I told myself "this is not a big deal. this is not a big deal." and then I realized that this guy is so dedicated to being the best possible hat creek dude he can possibly be. It's actually inspiring. When you order an item, they say, "and you're cool with lettuce, tomato, onion, hat sauce, and pickles?" And for me, since I spent over a decade in the food service industry, I've always been very precise with my order. But I can understand the extent to which they've gone to make sure there is absolute clarity so that nobody gets something they're allergic to, or didn't ask for, or was meant for another customer. Hat Creek absolutely 100% delivered today. The fantastic fellow at the window was wearing a mask and the food was hot and fresh. If they are trying to cultivate a family friendly vibe they should do something about the line of homeless guys waiting to use the restroom at Westlake. In addition to the terrible smell in the restroom, they was no soap and the faucet was running at a trickle. The ketchup is self service into tiny cups, and nothing is on the table for convenience. Very clean, warm and cheery, local family friendly burger shop. Service is impeccable and the food is good. Got a little hat with pepper jack and fries and split some tots with a friend. It's all fresh and sizeable in the amount of vegetation they put on your burger. Bun is well toasted on both sides and holds well to the contents. Burger itself is juicy and well cooked. Their fried potato game is pretty solid too. Very crisp fries and tater tots. Somehow they tend to stick together a bit. Tots are better than fries - they get them super crispy and awesome here. They also have a few house sauces that are interesting. Hat sauce is my favorite of the bunch but fry sauce and happy sauce are ok too. Try them all! read more

I have to say I am a big fan of Hat Creek. I have only ordered pickup from this location, but due to COVID we have been ordering pickup from here a lot whenever the need for a quick burger hits. Their burgers are consistently good and they have a decent variety. Most recently I tried their fried chicken sandwich which was shockingly even more tasty than I expected... and HUGE! I will definitely be ordering this again. Their milkshakes are also great and come with your choice of topping (Oreos, M&Ms, etc.) Hat Creek does lose a couple stars for me because they consistently get our order wrong in some way. Everytime we go (not exaggerating) we end up with a missing item or an incorrectly made sandwich, even though the order is reflected correctly on the receipt. This can be especially frustrating if you have someone in your family with food allergies. It's a shame for a place to have such great food but such reliably spotty service. read more

Two friends and I meet here on Thursday nights, when beers are a buck. The service is always top notch. They have a rotating selection of brews that cater to the Pilzner-lover, the dark beer-lover, the IPA-lover, etc. They don't have a huge selection, but they mix it up nicely. Ok, note for the non-locals on Austin's local burger chains. The other one that rhymes with B. Larry's tastes and feels like an Austin version of In-N-Out. This one, probably because of the buns and the various burger recipes, reminds me of Shake Shack. Regardless, one of the better quick service burger meals I've had in a long time. (Honestly, I'd been avoiding trying Hat Creek after a mediocre meal when they opened their first full restaurant in Westlake.) First of all, it's fast food, but at a slightly higher level. Like one of the other reviewers, we received excellent service on Tuesday night from Wesley. They also use naturally raised beef. (Hey, when you're on Burnet Road, you have to appeal to the Allandale and Rosedale moms...) But let's talk about the food. I had their BBQ burger, minus pickles and onions, but adding mushrooms. My dining companion and I each shared an order of tater tots and fries. The burger was very good. It's not as big of a burger as the most famous Texas chain, but it's cooked well and the quality shines through. The BBQ sauce was good and not over-applied. Likewise, the crispy bacon and sauteed mushrooms accompanied the burger well. And there's surprisingly more tots (by the way, fried much better and significantly less greasy than other places) and fries in each of the small bags than you will initially think. There's also a self-serve area with ketchup, utensils, beverages, and their three signature sauces. If I had one gripe, I'd have appreciated a bit more explanation of what constitutes their Hat Sauce, Happy Sauce, and their Fry Sauce. But all in all, it's probably the best local burger chain I've experienced. read more

A side order of fries, tater tots, etc. are $2.88/each so if you get a burger, side order and a small drink, be prepared to spend over $11. The location is awesome...tucked right behind the Star Bar on the corner of Nueces and 6th... and shares the patio with the Star Bar. Their deal is that they want to use fresh healthy ingredients including handmade, all natural Angus cheeseburgers, fresh-cut french-fries and hand-dipped Blue Bell milkshakes. I loved the concepts and it was good to see Drew again... he's a good guy and he'll probably be the smiley nice guy taking your order. They do have some kinks to work out so I'll give 'em a little grace on this "review." Really I just wanted to let y'all know that they are there, what they are about, and that I think they'll be awesome when they get the kinks worked out. I'll try them again and update this review later. But I will say that my burger was good and fresh, and that the milkshake was blue bell and awesome. I'll be going back. Well here goes, I found myself in my Bat mobile cruising to the sound of Ba-Ba-Ba-Ba- Ba Barbra-Anne, take my hand.... The old 60's classic and I ended up on Burnet Road. I had no particular place to go and I was hungry and that is when I noticed I had just passed Hat Creek Burger, so as I passed I had to turn around and go back, wasn't easy in that area too much traffic. OK, parked and went in, ordered the double meat burger, fries and a drink. I added American cheese and added mayo and asked them to hold the pickles. If you look at my picture you will see I had to remove the pickles but the mayo was added. The staff at the counter was gracious and took my order and had it out in a jiffy. I got my cup and added ice yea crushed ice nice touch. The burger was hot and so were the fries, I tried the fries first, they were OK I did kind of like them but would have preferred no skins. Now for the burger, it was about the same size as a McDonalds double cheese burger maybe a little more meat with lettuce and purple onions but with a lot of ooze, and I like ooze, I really like the burger, it had a taste I liked; something was a little different maybe the meat had something in it, I don't know. The restaurant itself was clean with a cement floor and basically all done in white inside and out, the chairs were metal and had a baby blue seat cover. On the chairs when I say metal I think it was lead, as I tried to move the chair by just picking it up and moving it; it did not budge, these chairs were lead heavy metal, I had to use my super powers to move it but that was OK, these chairs will last a long time. Overall I like the burger not the best but better than many I have had recently. Would I go back? Yes I will sometime. read more

What is magnificent at Hat Creek is magnificent. What is not magnificent at Hat Creek is average to poor. They have the finest hamburger restaurant playground in the universe. I am over 60 years old - but my inner four year old wanted to not eat at all but go and play on that playground. The coolest part is a super narrow super tall house with all sorts of hidden stuff inside. The burgers and fries can wait ..... I'm busy. Hat Creek prides itself on making its own pickles and sauerkraut and other pickled goodies. I had their signature cheeseburger and had it topped (my addition) with their signature homemade jalapeno sauerkraut. The burger was boredom on a stick. The only interest bitefuls were the sauerkraut - which was everything advertized. For a side dish I had their fried pickles. Totally all star fried pickles. !! The base pickles themselves are just fine. They are cut thin and breaded very thin almost but not quite at tempura thinness. The batter though is laced with generous amounts of black pepper. Black pepper is not the most interesting flavor in general - but in this application, it absolutely sang. The pickles were greaseless, totally full of flavor, and the pickles, the batter and the pepper each made a wonderful contribution. It does not hurt that Hat Creek has three custom made sauces that they have in squirters on a condiments table. Use them. The "Hat" sauce (one of the big three) was far more interesting than the white stuff that was served with my pickles for a dip. Great eating. However, other than the legendary pickles - the rest of the meal was quite flat. I already mentioned my ho hum burger. The bottom of the barrel was my milkshake. They have all sorts of exotic flavors so I got a Cuvee Coffee shake. Credit due where credit is due - they are trying to do a high integrity all natural ingredient no fake syrup no relying on flavored ice cream milk shake. Kudos for nobility. Razzes for results. There was not much flavor in the milkshake - and much of it was uneven. I found a flavor stripe .... kinda sorta ... between the 25% and 40% of my milkshake - where it kinda sorta kinda sorta tasted like coffee. The rest tasted like empty milkshake mix - although an honest homemade milkshake mix. Honest and boring, like a Boy Scout boyfriend, you intend to drop for a drug dealer who is much more fun. I am not sure I will be going back to Hat Creek. It is not exactly health food ... The thrills are not there in large enough numbers to justify the calories ... and if I run up and down the ladders and slide down the slides, I might knock over smaller children who have more legitimate business there. read more

Pretty darn good burger out of a trailer behind the Star Bar. I've had my heart broken before by food trailers near my Little Woodrow's. (READ: BRING BACK MY TORCHYS!) So it took me awhile to try this new Burger Trailer. The Lovely Ladies of Little Woodrow's (the lol-dubyas) heartily recommended it to me and my wife one night so we decided to try it out. Pretty easy ordering really, you can have a hamburger, or a double hamburger, and you can put cheese on it or not. White or wheat bun, pick from American, Cheddar, Pepper Jack or Swiss. Choose toppings from lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, mushrooms & jalapenos, choose condiments from mayo, mustard, & ketchup. Add bacon for .75. Choosing a side is a little more complicated because you have to pick from the following large menu: 1. Fries. I'd give the burger slightly higher marks than some of the previous reviewers. I like the salt & pepper seasoning & you can tell the patty is hand formed. They claim it is never frozen as well. Apparently the burger is Premium Gold Angus. They don't have a veggie burger but the cows the burger came from were 100% vegetarian. So that's almost a veggie burger right? Also as a bonus the Angus ranches are certified for humane treatment of their cows, presumably right up until that last moment. You know when they kill them dead and cut them up for food, and all. I've heard good things about their milk shakes as well, but I'm usually drinking beer across the street and have not figured out how to do the milkshake beer combo yet. All in all, I like the place. Not sure if the owner here is an ex-P. Terrys employee but there is more than a passing resemblance here to the style and substance of P. Terrys burgers and fries. Starting with the fries...the thin, shoe-string style Hat Creek fries look identical to P. Terrys and are even served in the same type of twisted, wrapped paper, but P. Terrys fries are crisper and have more taste. That said, the Hat Creek burgers take the P. Terrys pepper base and crank it to a whole new level to create a more flavorful, peppery burger that also has a more character. So, Hat Creek loses a round to P. Terrys fries but has a strong finish with their outstanding burgers. When on Burnet Road I'm still partial to Top Notch as I love their real charbroiled flavor and their lightly-fried onion rings, but Hat Creek is a contender with their pepper-laced burgers. I have eaten here several times and each time the service was fine so I can't relate to several other Yelpers who have mentioned poor service - I found the service to be both speedy and very friendly. I should mention a real plus here is their ice machine - yep, their ice machine - it's fabulous - it spits out soft, easy-to-chew small cubes that make your drink wonderfully cold and easy to down, so the ice here is seriously excellent and that is a big deal when it's above 100 degrees outside. They are paying attention to the details at Hat Creek and it shows. read more

The Big Hat burger is just about perfect. It's the kind of burger with two thin patties, well-done and crispy. You can get a wheat bun and real cheese if you ask. I also love the lettuce "buns", which work surprisingly well, and the "Hat" sauce. Lettuce, tomatoes, and onions are fresh and crisp. The fries are disappointing; "fresh" is not actually good in a french fry. Frozen, or parboiled, or otherwise precooked potatoes give you the crisp-on-the-outside, soft-inside fries that I love. These are more limp and greasy, not my thing. But the burgers are excellent, especially for the reasonable prices. read more

I will admit, I just stumbled across this place while looking for a quick place to pee. Saturday morning, 8am... and i was hungry. I saw a sign that said "now serving breakfast" so I went up in there with it, pausing at the door to make note of the name of the establishment that would soon relieve my rumblin tummy... and my aching bladder. "Ahhh... I've heard of this place," I thought to myself as I ran past the counter. Once relieved, I walked up to the counter, was greeted by a friendly and attentive gentleman. I noticed the place was clean and there were about 8 idle hands in the kitchen hankerin for to fix me some food. I ordered two tacos - spinach, tomato, cheese & egg and a bacon, sausage & egg. They were served hot within 3 minutes, wrapped in foil. The flour tortillas were made fresh and had a little crispiness to it (which I drooled over while trying to take a quick pic for you guys). Few things make me as happy as a great burger. Found this place by accident; my boss always raves about the $1 beers on Thursdays. I stopped by on a Sunday after working up an appetite at Barton Springs all morning. The burgers were excellent. Perfect sizes. Topping were great. The fries were thin cut and were piping hot. The sauces are a must especially the Hat Creek sauce. They also have Strangeland Brewery beers on tap. Mainly dark beers but after sampling the "Entire " I ended up taking a growler home. They have a really great gluten free burger bun. The fries were over seasoned but overall my meal was very yummy. The staff was extremely friendly. I had a burger, fries, and a soda and it was $15, which seemed a little pricey for fast food (but you take what you can get when you have celiac). 3 stars because there was a hair in my burger.
