Hat Yai has been around for awhile, but this was my first time at this location.Go right at 5pm before the dinner rush or prepare for a wait. It is counter service so you go up, order and pay. I don't know that I had a lot of expectations coming here. But whatever they were, Hat Yai smashed through those. Friendly service at the counter to order, take a number and food is delivered, and they bus the tables. I appreciated the eclectic decor, especially the live plants. We arrived close to open, and there was only one table already seated. By the time we left, the place was full with a mixture of happy food lovers (old and young, friends, fams with small kids, couples). We shared a chicken special: drum, thigh, wing, roti, sticky rice, and curry. At the recommendation, we added a roti so we could each have our own. The curry was sublime. I dipped my chicken, my roti, my rice. Everything has a bit of that curry. The chicken was also great. Not too breaded, the chicken shone through. Maybe next time, I'll skip that extra roti - not because it's not good but because it's too good and I honestly don't need that much carb in my life. Speaking of carb, we also got the noodles. Thai fried chicken is non-existent where I'm from but coming back to PDX for a work trip, I knew I had to make it back out for this. Parking is a bit of a pain for this location, but the food is exceptional, service is fast. The fried chicken is legendary and it's great. Super juicy, tender, crisp, flavorful and covered in fried shallots, it's unique and delicious. I got it in the combo and that means sticky rice (woohoo), roti (woohoo), curry (woohoo) and pickled vegetables, which is a necessary palate cleanser between super flavorful bites. You can kinda eat and dabble around the plate however you like, but I would argue the super best bite is taking the chicken skin and dipping it in the curry. The roti is well fried and crisp, flaky and not too greasy and the curry has great flavor, depth and mild. The sticky rice soaks up everything and has some good chew too. If you go as a group, the family packs are a lot of food for good pricing. read more

It's been years since I last visited Hat Yai and I'm very happy to see that the food is still great. We got here a bit before noon on a Thursday and we were the first dine in customers, although there were a number of takeout orders being prepared. This is a pretty casual restaurant - you order up at the front and choose your own table. We didn't see a busing station, so I guess that's really the only thing keeping Hat Yai from being truly fast casual. We ordered pretty quickly and the food only took maybe 10-15 minutes to come out. Hat Yai for 2 ($30) - This combo comes with a variety of items. On the first tray, a fried half chicken, which was some of the juiciest fried chicken I've had. It came out piping hot (like burn your mouth hot). It wasn't battered like normal fried chicken, but instead was covered with Thai spices and fried to a crisp. The fat under the skin is rendered out pretty well and fried shallots adorn the top. The chicken comes with a small cup of sauce that's acidic and sweet with a slight spice. Tamarind based perhaps? A pretty large amount of long grain sticky rice accompanies the chicken, which complements the bold chicken flavors very well, and you can use it to pick up any stray pieces of shallot that fall off the chicken. On another tray, we got 2 pieces of roti, curry, and some pickles. The roti wasn't particularly flaky, didn't have super distinct layers and generally was a bit bready. It certainly wasn't best I've had, but was still a great vessel for the curry. The curry was delicious - rich concentrated curry taste with tons of fish sauce added (possibly a bit too much fish sauce for me!). The pickles, consisting of jalapeno, shallot, and daikon, helped clean the palette while alternating between the rice, chicken, and roti/curry. They give quite a bit of curry - more than can be soaked up by the roti, so you have plenty of extra to dip the chicken and rice into. The food at Hat Yai is fantastic. I don't care that my to go roti wasn't as fluffy as I'd hoped or that I would've preferred regular over sticky rice. I would get the hat yai combo again. The reviews about the chicken are all true, it's VERY good and crunchy, falls off the bone too. The house curry dip for the roti was also very good! It's more like a food cart with indoor seating very cramped very small. They don't have proper furniture to sit in. My wife continuously got bumped in the back while trying to eat because there's just absolutely no room in this place. The food was OK and pretty good with flavor but if you're a connoisseur of good Asian food then this place probably won't excite you very much it's very simple basic with just some good flavors of curry. Friend and I ordered the Hat Yai for 2 for $30, fried chicken, roti & curry, sticky rice and pickled veggies. Food came out pretty fast and it was delicious. Chicken was crispy but not overly dry (came with a piece of wing, drumstick, thigh and breast meat). Roti was good with the curry sauce. However, this is not the same as the flaky roti canai you get at some Thai places. There was enough curry sauce to dip your chicken in if you didn't like the sweet, tangy sauce they give you for the chicken. However, the sticky rice needs improvement. It was kind of hard and semi dry. The pickled veggies were amazing especially the jalapeños. Overall, a solid spot and would go again. read more

Was in town for a day and happened to be nearby when I saw this place popping off so naturally I decided to check it out. There was a little line to place an order at the counter but it moved quickly and it gave me time to make the difficult decisions on what to order because everything here looks incredible. I was excited to find that this place had a different take on the more traditional Thai offerings I generally find - a fusion of Thai and Burmese dishes that were executed with style and perfection. I decided to go with the quarter leg chicken with roti and curry dipping sauce plate. It was the perfect portion size for me, the sauce was delicious and fragrant, not incredibly spicy but well balanced and complimented the dish. The chicken was fried to perfection and the assorted pickled jalapeños and radish offset the flavor profile very well. The roti was probably my favorite treat of the whole plate and it was fluffy and flaky and was the perfect vehicle to soak up all the delicious curry. I also ordered a hibiscus mezcal margarita which was the perfect send off for the night. All the staff were super friendly and helpful along the way. Even though the place was busy, I got a spot at the counter quickly and my food came out before too long. First off the chicken is well seasoned and has a great crunch, still maintaining a great moisture inside. The sticky rice goes really well with the curry and I love dipping it in the curry. The chicken pieces were a wing, drumstick, thigh and breast. Even though the chicken looked tasty, the flavor was very mild. Almost nothing. The breast piece was also especially dry. This was our first visit to this location. It feels a little bigger than their Killingsworth location. My husband ordered Neau Pad Yi-Rha, off the specials board. It's described as "Stir-fried beef flank steak in a red curry paste, cumin, onion & ginger". It came with rice. He liked it but when I tasted a bite I thought it was too salty. The rice probably helped that. I got my favorite: Braised Chicken Thigh, which comes with roti and pickled vegetables. The curry sauce is so amazingly flavorful I could take a bath in it! I only ate one of the 2 thighs and had sopped up most of the sauce with the roti. I had also ordered a side of rice so I asked for another cup of curry sauce (no meat) to take home and eat with the leftovers. I was a little surprised they charged $6 for that. Now I know. They do a nice job with the roti. I LOVE roti canai, a Malaysian dish very similar to this (makes sense as Hat Yai is Southern Thai, close to Malaysia). Oh how I wish Portland had Malaysian food. This is the closest I've found. The cashier offered to make us "Thai Arnold Palmers", combining their basil limeade with Tai tea (no condensed milk). If you want to try delicious Southern Thai cuisine, this is definitely the spot! Southern Thai food is known for their fried chicken and so we were looking forward to it here and they did not disappoint. My partner had the Hat Yai fried chicken set and I had the Roasted Duck Curry from the special menu. The Hat Yai fried chicken had crispy skin and juicy meat on the inside. It included roti and curry which was tasty as well. The roasted duck curry was amazing and was the kind of spicy that left a kick in my mouth but nothing I couldn't handle. We also had their Hat Yai iced coffee, Thai tea, and non-alcoholic coconut mango horchata. The iced coffee was quite delicious with a unique taste. The Thai tea was great and slightly creamy. I really wanted to like this place given all the raving reviews but we must have come on an off evening. We stopped by for dinner last night and the roti was definitely old because it tasted stale and hard as if they refried an older batch. We also ordered the pad Thai and it was honestly the worst pad Thai I've had in a while- so salty and we only took a couple of bites before foregoing the whole dish. The fried chicken itself was fine though the white meat pieces were a lot dryer than the dark meat pieces. The beef brisket curry was a bit spicy as expected so make sure your spice tolerance is high. Sadly, I can't say I enjoyed our meal here. read more
