Came to this seafood forward restaurant boasting Ethiopian and Swedish cuisine by Marcus Samuelsson, for dinner, with some friends. I've been wanting to dine here since opening. Upon arrival, we were led to cozy booth seating. The interior was stunning, colorful, and elegant, with a mermaid motif. There was unique artwork throughout, lots of lights, and sprawling bar area. We ordered the Bread Basket and Crab Biryani to share. Both tasted amazing! The Bread Basket consisted of an assortment of Flatbread, Injera Crisps, Teff Biscuits, Blue Cornbread, along with Hummus and Plantain Chutney. The Flatbread was buttered, soft, and topped with flavorful spices. Injera Crisps were satisfyingly crispy and well seasoned. Biscuits were also buttery and perfectly pillowy. Cornbread was melt in your mouth delicious. The sauces were wonderfully savory and complimented the various breads well. Crab Biryani was nicely crispy with a decent amount of crab and bold in flavor. For my entree, I went with the Black Sea Bass. The Sea Bass was pan seared with a sambal sauce and coconut foam, along with a rice ball. I enjoyed this dish, but when I started eating it, I encountered a few small bones, which I was not expecting. Also, the skin could have been crispier. Besides that, the Sea Bass was delightfully tender, flaky, and seasoned well. Rice Ball was mouthwateringly crunchy and quite yummy. The Coconut Foam was light and refreshing, with strong coconut taste. I was able to try the Coffee Cured Duck. The Duck was sliced on top of a butternut squash puree, with an accompanying duck salad. The sliced duck portion was way too small, however was delicious! I could really discern the coffee and the duck was cooked to perfection, and oh so succulent. Service was excellent. I really want to like this place, but it is over hyped! I was looking forward to trying this place because of Marcus and I love seafood. I got the oysters and pasta. The oysters didn't taste fresh. The pasta was meh. I didn't enjoy the overall flavors of this dish. I told the server that I can't eat tomatoes but a light sauce is fine. He definitely took it to heart--maybe a little bit too much. After that, I wasn't able to order anything else aside from the pasta. At one point, when the person next to me offered me some chicken katsu skewers, he said "no!". I am not going to try to hide that I had really high expectations going in to this visit. I had read a lot about the restaurant, and I've been wanting to visit for quite a while now. The marriage of flavors and techniques across what looks like completely different cultures intrigues me. Spoiler: they did not disappoint! From the greeting at the door through the entire evening the staff was impeccable in their service. Adjusting tone, familiarity, and professionalism as the conversation called for. We felt like visiting a family member, while at the same time being cared for as a professional. Amazing night. The cocktails are divine! They are fun plays on ingredients and culture, without going overboard and just becoming weird. They're layered and complex, while still almost crushable. Food is almost impossible to describe. There are so many flavors and cultures meeting here that I can't do them all justice. To say "great Ethiopian" or "modern American", or "French techniques at their best", or "fun twist on a Swedish classic" while true also diminishes what they become as a whole. Don't take my word for it, experience it yourself. My only recommendation is to go as a larger group, so you can order _everything_ on the menu and share bites; because that is my only regret from my visit - not being able to try it all. read more

If you're looking for a place to warm up in this cold weather, Hav & Mar is the place for you. Not so much because of the indoor temperature, but because of the incredibly warm and welcoming staff. Rarely have I encountered this combination of true professionalism combined with joyfulness and warm hospitality. Even if the food wasn't as great as it is, I would come back just to be around the people! Food-wise, I'd especially recommend the lamb dumplings, but the octopus, black cod, and Nordic forest (mushroom) curry were also great. We had the chocolate tart for dessert, which was both delicious and just plain fun to eat, with great flavor and lots of fun textures between the crispy crust, creamy topping, chunks of cake, and airy foam. To add to the coolness factor, Chef Marcus Samuelsson was there that evening, not only expediting but coming out to greet a few tables. I highly recommend giving Hav and Mar a try. What a treat it was to enjoy another Marcus Samuelson restaurant in great company to kick off the new year! It was over a decade ago when I first dined at Aquavit when Samuelson was at the helm. Now in 2026, I was glad to share another memorable dining experience at another one of his restaurants. Hav & Mar is a beautiful restaurant with an inviting bar area that welcomes you as soon as you walk through the doors. With a reasonable happy hour menu, the bar was a great spot for mingling before you sit down for your meal. The dining menu was definitely globally-influenced in a good way. There were starter options such as ceviche and entree options such as a Nordic Forest curry. With a group of six, we wanted to try many of the items on the menu. Therefore, I suggested we opt for the chef's table option and leave it up to the chef to curate our culinary adventure for the evening. That turned out to be one of the best decisions for the new year (so far)! We were first greeted with the Fluke Ceviche that we were planning to order and got three plates to share among the six of us, along with some amazing warm dinner rolls. The ceviche was refreshing, with just the right amount of acidity. Then came a salad dish that might have been off the menu, with chopped kale, fresh figs, grapefruits, etc. that offered various textures with each bite. When it came to entree time, we got the following three items: Nordic Forest Curry, D & D Salmon (2 portions), and Havatini 2.0 (2 portions). We also got three portions of the Hav Fries, which included yucca and sweet potato fries with shiro hummus and awaze dips. The curry and salmon were delicious and complex in taste. Although not a fries person, I also enjoyed the fries a lot. On the other hand, the Havatini was on the spicier side that even my Korean friends stayed away from the dish after a couple bites as the spicy aftertaste was a bit overwhelming. For dessert, we got three portions of the orange Pavlova, which was just the light approach we needed to tie a bow on an incredible meal. I'm hitting up their perfectly curated Mermaid Hour that'll absolutely leave you wanting more. I went in thinking I'd just grab a couple bites and somehow ended up cleaning every single plate. I started drinks off with the Sorrel, topped with a slice of blood orange and clean mint. She was supper flavorful, refreshing, with hints of ginger for a bit of tanginess. For my first bite I had to get the fried olives and as someone who normally does not like olives... these had me questioning everything. Crispy, salty, a bit sour, but dangerously addictive and paired well with the spicy mustard. Up next we have the FISH CRUNCHWICH and I'm not exaggerating when I say I was literally licking my fingers after every bite. The fish was perfectly crispy, the Yuzu Tartar sauce was insane, blending everything together seamlessly. Lastly I had the Hav Smash and this was definitely my number 1. The burgers were perfectly seasoned, juicy, and I just never knew how bad hot honey and burgers need to go together. I had to finish everything off with a lemon drop martini. Perfectly sweet, refreshing and the perfect way to end the meal. The portions were small, but really good especially for one person, and every dish actually felt worth ordering. I had dinner at Hav & Mar with my husband and some friends on Saturday, and we enjoyed our meal. Our friends had been before and were happy to return; I had had the restaurant on my list for a while and was excited to try it for the first time. We shared quite a bit of the menu. We started with the Hav Bread Basket (assortment of teff biscuits, warm blue cornbread, injera crisps and flatbread, served with shiro hummus, honey butter, and seasonal jam). Our friend who'd been before insisted on the bread basket. I'm not normally a bread person, but she was right - the bread basket of all bread baskets. That shiro hummus?! The plantain jam?! Next, we had two of their raw and cured dishes: Swediopian (cured salmon, sliced and served with fresh sea buckthorn, a light fennel salad, a spiced mustard sauce, and topped with a coffee injera crumble) and tuna tartare (hand-cut tuna in a flavorful miso with a walnut oil drizzle, accompanied by a citrusy avocado crema and crispy injera chips). They were both fine but not memorable. I was surprised that I didn't get many of the flavors listed on the menu. I didn't taste the sea buckthorn or spiced mustard or coffee on the Swediopian, and I didn't get the citrus in the avocado crema (which I thought tasted a bit underseasoned) in the tuna tartare. Next, we had the lamb dumplings (tender lamb folded into delicate dumplings, finished with spicy red curry and injera crumble), which were very good, very flavorful. Then, we shared several of their entrees: Nordic Forest Curry (mushroom medley and seasonal vegetables in fragrant coconut curry with cilantro rice); Havatini 2.0 (campanelle pasta with a mix of shrimp and crab, served in a right white wine uni butter sauce); Addis York (flavorful fried chicken with bold Ethiopian doro wot stew topped with ayib cheese and accompanied by a soft-boiled egg); and coffee cured duck (served with a crispy duck salad, earthy roasted carrot, and rich duck jus). Of these, I thought the Addis York and coffee-cured duck were great. The veg curry and pasta dishes didn't do it for me (the pasta in particular stuck out like sore thumb from the rest of our meal - just a flat dish). For dessert, we had their Orange Pavlova (a crisp meringue topped with vanilla bean whipped cream and refreshing blood orange sorbet) and their chocolate tart (rich chocolate filling in a crisp crust, finished with an airy black tea foam and bright candied lemon). I preferred the orange pavlova, which was a good dessert. The chocolate tart was a little ... bland? I hardly even tasted chocolate. My husband had a couple of cocktails, and I had a couple of glasses of wine. Our friends stuck to an NA drink that was really refreshing. The restaurant is beautiful - sophisticated but still very comfortable. And the service was excellent - friendly, helpful. I didn't love every single dish, but I loved some a lot (bread basket, Addis York, lamb dumplings, coffee-cured duck). Not my favorite but both were fresh, citrusy, and bright. I'm so glad we got the Hav Bread Basket; that is a must for the table! Every single bite in that basket was delicious. I can't decide what I liked more - the teff biscuits or the blue cornbread. The injera crisps were so creative and each of the dips paired well with the breads. For my main, I went with the delicious Havatini 2.0. This is probably the same as their a la carte portion. The uni butter is rich and luscious. There was a good amount of shrimp and crab, and the campanelle was such a unique pasta choice and paired well for this dish. We also added on the Addis York since that is one of their classic dishes. The fried chicken was sweet, smoky, and fried well and the doro wat stew was bursting with flavor. I've also never had a soft-boiled egg cooked to perfection like that. It's a stunning dish, and honestly, it's a shame they didn't include this on their RW menu. We ended with the Orange Pavlova and had a few cocktails which were strong & nice to sip on. From the moment I walked in, I was struck by the stunning woodwork and overall design of the restaurant--it's absolutely beautiful and creates a warm, inviting atmosphere right away. We started with drinks, and I ordered the Notorious F.I.G. since an Old Fashioned is usually my go-to. This completely exceeded expectations. For the entrée, my friend and I split the branzino along with a side of biriyani fried rice. The sauce really elevated everything without overpowering it. The biriyani fried rice was equally memorable, full of flavor with a great mix of textures that complemented the fish perfectly. Came here for Restaurant Week as I was intrigued by the concept of Ethopian-Swedish food. I was surprised that I could get a last minute reservation (and was able to shift it when I was running late) and sat at the bar. I was seated by the POS system and got a lot of attention from the staff, particularly my server Carlos. Since I'd arrived 15 minutes after I originally planned, I was worried about having enough time to get to my show. When I told Carlos I was on a bit of a time crunch, he was immediately on board with helping to expedite things. I particularly appreciated how he offered to get my dessert brought out with my entree so I wouldn't have to eat up time waiting for my third course. What a mensch. I opted for the Swediopian berbere-spiced salmon, the wild mushroom curry, and the chocolate cake. Carlos recommended the perfect white wine that was able to pair perfectly with both fish and mushrooms. The salmon was fantastic, but I wish I had had a spoon for the apple water broth surrounding it. The mushroom curry was perhaps the best curry I'd ever eaten. It was earthy with the perfect amount of heat. I wish there had been a bit more liquid for the rice and one of the potatoes was a bit underdone, but otherwise perfection. The chocolate cake was decadent and perfectly made. I'm still thinking about the varying textures of each layer. It was an excellent value. The noise level was a bit too much for me, but sitting at the bar and being face to face with the servers made it easier. Highly recommend, and compliments to the chef! read more

The Addis York was the standout, a modern chicken dish inspired by traditional Ethiopian cuisine. The Queen's Ribeye was a favorite with porcini crusted ribeye, decadent bone marrow butter and smoked herbs. What a beautiful evening at Hav & Mar. We wanted to snag a resi at a nice restaurant on a recent trip, and a local friend suggested this. We arrived early for our reservation so we sat at the bar for our first drink. I got a Hav & Mar Martini and my friend got the Express yourself which is their version of the espresso martini. On a saturday night at 8 pm the bar was packed and the restaurant was full, it was a total vibe. I love how it feels to be in a bustling restaurant. We sat down at the high top table facing the kitchen. It was such a cool experience and view. For dinner - we couldn't decide what to order but the "can't decide" option caught our eye. For $95 pp you can let the chef decide what to send out. We're all adventurous eaters so we let our server know about dietary restrictions and she asked us what things caught our eye and let her and the chef do the rest. It was AMAZING! We got sent: +biscuits +hamachi with black ceviche +Autumn Salad +Banana Leaf Snapper with coconut rice +Havatini: a pasta with shrimp, crab and uni butter. +Brussel Sprouts: +Tiramisu and Pumpkin Donuts for dessert That list looks like a ton of food but it was A TON of food. They sent out two of each entree as well as two hamachis. In my opinion, it was actually too much food as we could barely eat dessert. We are three girls who can definitely throw down and eat a lot, but we couldn't make it through all the dishes. My suggestion would be to perhaps send out one entree per person versus 4 plates for 3 people - so you can try three different things and have some room for dessert? Regardless, the experience was amazing and interesting to be surprised - I just hate to waste food. I loved the meal and vibe of Hav & Mar. I was generally underwhelmed with the food. I've been to many amazing Ethiopian places, which tend to be on the pricier end but you always know the food is delicious and well worth it. This was not the case for this place. I know it is fusion but it just didn't work for me. Loved: tuna tartare with injera chips. Pretty ingenious and quit tasty. We asked for a few extra chips and that cost $5 bucks. This was a good option in the neighborhood with available reservations. So crazy how hard it is to get into some restaurants. It's super spacious like you're not in NYC anymore. Service was great but was a touch slow towards the end so we had to skip dessert. We were a party of three and split the cornbread, the swediopian, pasta, scallops, branzino and Napa cabbage. The best thing was the Napa cabbage. The pasta was otherwise average and everything else was good. If I have to dine around here, I would recommend this place for the space, ease of reservation. I would also like to try the other options on the menu. Maybe we can get some dessert next time. read more

Impeccable experience from start to finish. We began with the bread basket, which we could have eaten all day long. The injera cracker was perfect with the shiro and the blue cornbread with sweet butter was a standout (the biscuit was literally one of the best I've ever had). Next we had the fluke ceviche (I wish I could have taken the broth/sauce home because the calamansi flavor was out of this world). The havatini reminded me of a traditional pasta with seafood Italian dish. It was yummy. We also shared the pan seared black bass which was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Also a standout.
