I'd been wanting to check out Little Maven for a while, and made a dinner reservation in advance. The interior was trendy and colorful, with whimsical archways and beautiful bar. For drinks, I chose the Thai Basil Spritz mocktail, which was light and refreshing. For starters, we ordered the Caesar Cups and Tuna Cannolis to share. Both of these were incredible! The Caesar Cups were such a nice bite. The only thing I would've added to them is a bit more lemon, but they were otherwise perfect. The Tuna Cannolis were also delicious and so well-composed. For entrees, my sister and I shared the Beef Bolognese Agnolotti and my parter got the Oxtail Trofie. Again, both pasta dishes were amazing. I loved the spicy vodka sauce on the Agnolotti and the braised oxtail was incredibly soft and flavorful. For dessert, we shared the Chocolate Chip Cookies, which were delicious. I don't usually love soft serve ice cream, but it paired so beautifully with the cookies. The only thing that was off about Little Maven was the service. They reached out to me a few days before our reservation to confirm if we were celebrating anything. I told them it was my sister's birthday, and we even discussed putting a candle in the dessert. However, when we arrived, no one mentioned the birthday and no celebratory dessert was offered. The day after the meal, they sent me an email asking for feedback, to which I responded, but they never got back to me. Little Maven has a lot going for it on paper. The Flatiron space is lively and colorful, the concept is fun, and chef Josh Capon clearly knows how to build a dish. But this visit had some real highs and some real lows, and one of them is not something I can brush past. The roasted chicken was genuinely outstanding. Incredibly moist, deeply flavorful, with a jus that I wanted to drink straight from the bowl. That dish alone could carry a five-star review. The Caesar cups were a crowd-pleaser, well-executed and fun to eat. Solid. But the crudo with strawberries and pineberries had so much potential and completely fell short in the worst way possible. The concept was creative and the presentation was beautiful, but the fish was clearly on its last leg. That is not a matter of taste preference, that is a freshness issue, and it is a serious one for a restaurant at this level. Then dessert. The cookies are all over the social media and the photos on their page look generous, gooey, and loaded with chocolate. What arrived at our table was small, dry, and nothing close to what is being advertised. That kind of gap between expectation and reality is frustrating. Little Maven has real upside and the chicken alone gives me reason to return. But the kitchen needs to tighten up on quality control. Went for brunch today with friends. They are new little maven fans and we'll definitely be back. As always, the service is perfect and friendly and accommodating We shared the bib salad with green goddess dressing. The pickled onions are delicious, the apple slices, the avocados and the dressing !This is a perfect salad. The French toast was out of this world. Almost like a bread pudding. It was absolutely delicious. The pancakes were good, but not my favorite. The huevos rancheros were delicious, and the burgers are some of the best in the city. And please don't forget how thin and crispy and amazing the french fries are. The cocktails were fantastic. The hot chocolate espresso martini was absolutely delicious. I went to Little Maven on a weeknight for a girls night, it was the perfect spot for dinner and drinks. The place was decently crowded, so I would recommend getting a reservation. It was restaurant week though, so maybe they are not usually that busy. The whole table did the restaurant week menu, so I was able to sample a few dishes. One person was Gluten Free and they were very accommodating for GF versions of their menu! The real standouts for me were the appetizers and cocktails. For apps, especially liked the tuna tartare cannolis and the Caesar cups. We also had the shrimp scampi, and it was fine but not my personal favorite. For cocktails, the spicy cenote dreams drink was so good and the mezcal #5 was as well. When we came in around 6 pm for dinner, the restaurant was pretty empty. It got full shortly after. The staff and the servers were amazing. They were all so nice and understanding of my little kid in tow. She is a very good restaurant baby, but it definitely helps when the staff acknowledge her (in a nice way). The food was delightful as well. The tuna cannoli had a nice crunch and pretty fresh (although you can't compare to omakase). The roasted chicken was actually pretty good, very moist. I liked the sunchoke that came with it. The oxtail trofie had great flavor, but it was really heavy, so we did not end up finishing it. The sphaghetti vongole also had great flavor, clams were fresh. We've passed Little Maven so many times and always meant to try it. Last night we finally did for NYE. It was absolutely a great experience. From our wonderful server, Vanessa, to the outstanding food, we had a night to remember. We started with the Tuna Cannoli and the Caesar endive, both perfect for sharing and packed with layers of flavor. The scallops with caviar were rich and decadent, a little salty though. For entrées, we had the dry-aged duck and the steak frites, both incredibly tender. The portion of fries was extremely generous, more than enough to share. This was my first time finding a place based on zoning in on a location, which was USQ, on google map. I was surprised to see such good reviews. It was a definite plus that reservations were not hard to make. We were initially a party of four that went down to three the day of. The space was large with an area for private parties as well. It wasn't too loud so we were about to catch up. We decided to do the special where we each paid a certain amount for a few shared apps, 2 pastas, an entree and a dessert. I forget how much it was and now after looking at the menu, I don't see that option. I think it was 75 per person. We tried the whipped tahini, Caesar cups, tuna tartar cannolis, beef empanadas. We could not select the apps. They were all pretty good. If I could replace one of them, it would've been the empanadas. They were just nothing special. For the 2 pastas, we chose the vongole and the oxtail trofie, which were both excellent options. The entree was the steamed bass. I thought it was a little too different from the rest of the apps and the pastas so the meal tasted off. I think any of the four other options would have been better. Wow this some of the best food I've had in the city. The decor is swanky casual. Great place for a work outing. The light is dim, a little too dim to read the menu but I liked the vibe it created. They also have a complimentary coat check. The menu has plenty of options to choose from without being overwhelming. For a group of 5 we got 3 apps, an entree each, two sides and a dessert. Plenty of food. Also each got a drink. Bill $500. Everyone was moaning in delight as they ate bites of the food. Standouts for me included the tahini, caviar tots and arctic char. The tahini app is big. Comes with bread and veggies and lots of thick, creamy tahini. The bread was excellent and I love all the pairings. I never had caviar on tots before. 5 tots for $50. Caviar is slightly salty, and the texture pairs well with the tater tot. The arctic char is a decent size, meaty and cooked to perfection. Very juicy with a crisp skin. The base I think was more tahini and fish roe. Very good. We got the cookies and ice cream for the table. It's a miso cookie, tastes salty and meaty. Like umami, very interesting. Def needs the sweet and cold ice cream pairing. My nutty professor drink was outstanding. It came in a fun mug. I thought it would be a bit bigger, mostly ice. Girls' dinner! This spot was definitely a hit, from the ambiance to the service and, of course, the delicious food. We started off with a glass of rosé and a spicy margarita, followed by the shrimp scampi and beef empanadas our waiter recommended, both were incredible and a must. For my drink I had the maven 7, which was a play on a french 75 and very refreshing. Little Maven has exceptional reviews across the board, which seemed a bit too good to be true upon initial review. While I don't think it was a five-star experience, it was a very solid four stars with a few clear highlights. As a restaurant that is New American-esque located in kind of a no-mans-land as far as defined neighborhoods are concerned, Little Maven does not have a strong identity, instead catering to a diverse crowd in terms of interests and expectations. The result is a spot that produces delicious, well-executed food, sometimes sticking with tradition, other times with a bit of playfulness and whimsy. In my opinion, it's likely to satisfy -- but not wow -- everyone. It's a spot that certain out-of-towners will enjoy and find impressive, and locals will find worthy, tasty, and with mild intrigue. Came here at 8pm on a Saturday night. I made a reservation beforehand but there were plenty of openings available and there was a smattering of open tables when we arrived so I'm sure you could easily be sat as a walk-in if you end up deciding come to here last minute. The space is on the larger side for Manhattan but pretty standard for the area. The decor is colorful and abstract, with fun patterns adorning various elements of the space. Though Little Maven seems to be known more as a wine rather than a cocktail destination, we ended up going for cocktails on this particular evening because we were going out with friends later and were trying to maintain a more high-energy vibe. The wine was definitely enticing, but the cocktail menu still offers a lot to get excited about, especially if you like agave-based drinks. I don't drink tequila but I love mezcal, and luckily one of the two margaritas listed on the menu -- the Spicy Passionfruit Margaritas -- can be made with mezcal if you specifically ask for it. It's made with passionfruit liqueur, yuzu koshu, and lime, and while it's advertised as being spicy, the spice level is mild at most (my partner, who is much more sensitive to spice than I am, tried it too and had a similar report). I then tried the Mezcal Meyer Lemon Negroni (Siete Misterios Mezcal, Luxardo Bitter Bianco, Le Mone Meyer Lemon Aperitif, Aveze), a white mezcal negroni variation that was bright and citrusy and a little sweet. Overall, both drinks were approachable and tasty, nothing too wacky or memorable but very good (again: worthy, taste, and with mild intrigue). Food-wise, we attempted to balance what we had read was standout and what our server endorsed, which oddly had very little overlap. I can't say the menu overall has much cohesion, but each dish was solid at the very least to excellent at best, so planning and execution on a smaller scale is working very well here. They coursed it out well and the timing of each course was ideal, and that sort of thing can be taken for granted but it was particularly well managed here, so props to the service for making that happen. Eats, below: Beet Salad w/ labneh, pistachio crumble, pomegranate: A- People absolutely raved about this online. It was very good, but it didn't necessarily blow me away. A safe preparation but executed very well, with both golden and red beets and some nice punches of flavor with the pomegranate seeds. Caesar Cups w/ endive cups, charred broccoli, garlic crumbs: A+ At the other end of the spectrum was this dish, which was familiar in flavor but very playful and creative in execution. The charred broccoli was an unusual touch that made the dish intriguing and memorable. Tuna Tartare "Cannolis" w/ spicy tuna, crispy nori, sesame: A The other memorable dish of the evening which almost seems obvious in hindsight yet it's something I'd never seen before. I've had plenty of sushi wrapped in nori and plenty of tuna tartare preparations but put altogether like this something totally new. Fresh and yummy and fun. Shrimp Scampi w/ toasted garlic, tomato, white wine, Calabrian chili, fresh focaccia: A- This one was highly recommended by our server but probably my least favorite of what we got, though it was still solid. I guess it didn't feel all that exciting after some of the more creative stuff, but the flavors were there and the tomatoes were a great complement. Steamed Black Bass w/ green Thai coconut curry, roasted eggplant, sticky rice cake, toasted peanuts: A Something about this dish was strange and really cohesive as a concept but each component was delicious and the flavors overall were excellent. We visited Little Maven at 8 pm on a recent Saturday in August. It was initially a little bit quiet for a weekend night, but it started to pick up later in the evening, maybe around 9. I loved the maximalist, jewel-toned decor and found the service to be professional and efficient. Starters: Tuna tartare cannolis (spicy tuna, crispy nori, sesame): not reinventing the wheel here, but these were crunchy, spicy, and delicious. The tuna was really fresh and the "cannoli" presentation was cute. Served with a smear of wasabi-style sauce. Caviar and tots (golden osetra caviar, crispy tots, crème fraîche, chives): these were tasty, but at $58 for four fairly tiny tot bites, this would have to be a one and done for me. (It was also a real bummer to learn via reviews that just 7 months ago, you could order five of these tots for less than $50. What happened? That's a significant difference!) the tots were good, though: crunchy potato, lots of salty and savory flavors, cooled down by the creme fraiche. Pasta: Sungold pomodoro chitarra (burattini, opal basil, grana padano, and garlic breadcrumbs): the dish of the evening, and truly one of the best pastas I've had in a long time. The chitarra (like a square spaghetti) is al dente, there's a lot of cheesiness all around, and the sungold tomatoes give the dish an extremely vibrant, bright character. 10/10 recommend Main: Steamed black bass (green Thai coconut curry, roasted eggplant, sticky rice cake, toasted peanuts): As good as a version you'd expect from a high-end Thai restaurant. The fish was tender and the sauce was a minty, spicy green coconut curry, simple and well-executed. Side: Broccolini: a good side. Lemony. Substantial in size for $9. Drink: Cucumber limoncello sour (Farmer's Gin, Lucano Limoncello, Cucumber, Egg White): so refreshing for the summer. The limoncello really adds intrigue to a classic cucumber gin sour. As every married man has to sometime, I had to go to the Container Store. Not by choice, but because marriage is about compromise. She got the Container Store, and then we both got to go eat at Little Maven (two blocks away). Personally, I like to choose activities that everyone likes, unlike my wife. And who could possibly not like Little Maven? The front room is pretty loud (but outstanding for large groups), but the more subdued, dare I say sexy back room is phenomenal. Comfortable, classy, and A Tribe Called Quest was playing when I walked in (the music stayed great the whole night). And everything was good. The cocktails (everyone loves a bleu cheese stuffed olive), the service (shout out to Lucas, who is the man), and the food. We loved the whipped tahini, the shrimp scampi (boiling hot but delicious after I burned my mouth), and the empanadas were solid...but if you need oxtail in your life I'd roll with the pasta instead. The steamed black bass was gorgeous and flavorful and along with the sticky rice cake and the little salad, perfectly balanced. Little Maven isn't good IMHO which is unfortunate because I was really looking forward to frequent this place more often. First, the Maven Hour menu is nothing special and you're better off opting from the regular menu. The spicy margarita was very watered down and the tuna cannolis were quite tiny for each being $5 and it wasn't anything special. I also got the nutty professor cocktail from the regular drinks menu and it was really good, granted it was $24 haha. The maven burger, however, was quite disappointing. It was incredibly salty to the point that it was almost inedible. The fries were great but if the burger isn't good that doesn't matter. All in all, this place was quite disappointing. I found this on Instagram so I was nervous about what I was going to get. Because obviously they hype it up to get followers. From the appetizers all the way to dessert: 10/10. My favorite was my entree which was the sea bass in this chai chili green curry. I haven't had an entree this good in awhile. Of course the cookies tasted homemade and right out of the oven. We can't say enough good things about Littke Maven. Food is amazeballs and the service was impeccable! Don't even get us started on the killer music playlist!! Ask to sit in "sweet gravy's Ray's" section!! Super great server..,dimples and so sweet (I guess like gravy!) We had the caviar and hash browns, the broiled oysters, duck ravioli and steak frites. Everything was truly amazing. Anthony is the GM and sooo good at what he does. He came and visited with us and shared some about the restaurant history. Very personable and just an awesome dude. A truly marvelous experience from start to finish! Upon walking in, my first thoughts were about the ambiance and vibes. What a cool spot! 80s, dinner feeling decor, but elevated . Music was great and vibes were high. Upon looking at the menu, we couldn't decide so our table opted for the big maven which is basically a taste of the entire menu! It was truly a tour of the menu and we didn't have a single bad bite. My favorite items though were the tuna tartare cannolis, the whipped tahini, the steak frites, and the homemade cookies. The star of the show thought was the duck orecchiette. Truly a delectable dish packed with flavor. This would be my entree of choice if I were to go back! We also happened to get lucky and meet executive chef Josh Capon who made a guest appearance! He was lovely. There are many restaurant choices in NYC but if Little Maven is not on your list, then you're wrong. Little Maven is a must. read more

Had dinner at Little Maven a couple of weeks ago. It's a great little spot with a sexy vibe. Very tall windows, very dim lighting. Which made reading the menu a painful experience...however, we statutes out with a round of drinks, then ordered quite a few things off the menu. We had them Mushroom Laab, Shrimp Scampi, steamed Black Bass, Halibut Tacos and Broccolini. I thought the fish was excellent, full of flavor, loved the cilantro and the hint of curry on the bass. The scampi was great. The mushrooms, which our server Raymond (who was great), told us that was a new addition to the menu, we didn't love. It was kind of plain and wrapped in Romaine (I think), and just didn't do much for me, and we let the Broccolini sit too long and it got cold. Overall a good dining experience with excellent service. read more
