What happened to the old Haven? I do want to start by saying the service was great, it is the food that needs help. We were seated and given drinks promptly. We ordered duck confit for app, it was just ok. The duck itself was cooked nicely and cherry jus was good but chef should have stopped there- the duck leg came on a bed of strange lentils, which is a weird combo. The chef adds too many extra items to the food here. The lentils were unnecessary and tasteless. there was also a sour white sauce mixed in there (Greek yogurt tasting? - not sure but not needed) Husband and I had the Haven burger which used to be the Best! But his comment was 'it isn't the same' - the burger was good but definitely not the old delicious Haven burger - what happened? We also shared the 'green salad' - this is just a weird combination of ingredients. I did not understand the massive blob of burrata on top of greens, why?? Burrata needs to be with something it compliments, it doesn't serve a purpose on this salad, we placed it to the side and didn't eat it, sad. The green goddess dressing tasted strange and the rest of the salad was just a strange combo of pistachios, and something crunchy- very confusing choices here from the chef. Haven should save the huge slab of burrata for another dish where it works. So sad about this experience, this used to be one of my favorite restaurants but the food just isn't good anymore. Sadly we won't be back. read more

If you can find a parking spot (which is not easy at lunch time), then I recommend this restaurant for the Green goddess salad! I got it with chicken and it was amazing! Besides the delicate lettuce it had sugar snap peas and broccolini pistachios and crispy farro with a nice big chunk of fresh burrata. It also comes with serrano chiles but I skipped those because I'm pretty wimpy. The staff was great and lots of outdoor tables. read more

During the Orange Street Fair my friends and I decided to grab some dinner and drinks at Haven. Being our normal go to at the Orange Circle it seemed like the place to go. It was packed but luckily our group of seven was seated right away and drinks started flowing. My buddy told my girlfriend and I that he had a new favorite drink that we had to try and so we did. I did have a Mexican Coke as well and it was amazing. I looked on the menu and saw that they had a crispy pork belly appetizer and of course, I had to try it. I've never had pork belly that melts in your mouth the way that this did. I could eat it every day if you let me... and I'm seriously not joking about that!! My girlfriend went with her usual Haven Burger. I took a bite of it too, and Haven knows how to make a damn good burger!! Our group had a few drinks, a few shots, and the time was had!! Now onto service!!! Our server Nicole was one of the best we've ever had. My girl is a ketchup fiend... and no server can keep up with her ketchup needs, but Nicole did!! And doing it all with a smile and promptness that would keep any hungry patron satisfied. The day we went the owner also made an announcement that he was thanking all of his patrons and giving all his appreciation to all his staff and customers throughout all the years they've been open. It was an Anniversary of some sort for Haven!! It was an awesome moment to be part of and will be a great moment to remember!! If you are ever in the Orange circle... don't pass this place up. The food, the service, and the atmosphere was and always has been top notch. read more

There's a parking lot behind Haven that you can walk through an adjacent alley to get to Glassell, but sometimes it can fill up. There's street parking around the area too. I've come here a handful of times a few years ago, but hadn't been back until today for OC Restaurant week. I got the cornbread and my friend got the kale cesura to start. The cornbread was SO yummy and the butter was the perfect compliment to add a little kick. It's already pretty butter-y so adding more felt kind of extra, but butter makes everything tastier right? For an entree I got the tacos and the flavors were so tasty! The three tacos were a good size and I felt full off of them. I like the citrus on top too - it cut some of the oil. We split the ice cream sundae and the beignets for dessert. Both were good, but the beignets were pretty dense (not light and fluffy like some). I love the atmosphere of Haven and the variety on their menu. The service is always great and you can't go wrong with any of the food! read more

I came here for a date night with my husband and we had such an amazing experience. Service was good. Waiter made really great recommendations on both drinks and food and it did not disappoint. This is truly a 5 star yelp restaurant. I have a good chunk of the menu and everything is excellent. Prices are fair, quantities are proportionate and service has always been good. Again the food has been consistently excellent. I'm at a loss as to why it's only 3.7 on Yelp. Rarely is yelp this wrong, perhaps judging on single experiences but I've been multiple times, had multiple dishes and taken family and friends and nothing but praise. I was recommended this place and will do the same. read more

This restaurant started off pretty good. In the last year it's really gone down hill. The food quality is very poor. I tried to bring this up some concerns to the manager that was at the store at the time. He was extremely rude. I will not be returning. read more

Stopped in for brunch today - I had never been there before today because it was always super packed - today I found out why!!! We started with the burrata - and it was so good the sweet the salty the spice was such an amazing combo and perfectly balanced in warm toasted bread. The nectarines were so fresh and sweet. The heat in the chili oil was perfect for me (who doesn't like spicy usually), it was tempered by the Burrata and and the nectarines it was perfect. Go for it - AMAZING! Main dish all of us ordered the hanger steak and it eggs, one of my party had read a review that read "I still dream about the steak and eggs" ohhhhh did I find out how true that was, beautiful presentation, perfectly cooked eggs over beautifully seasoned and seared hanger steak with this beautiful chimichurri sauce and roasted potatoes. Omg it was so fantastic. We normally talk between bites and we were all quiet accept for an occasional "mmmm this is so good" the others enthusiastic "mmmhmm" in response. Highly recommended!!! Dessert was an order of the pound cake with strawberries and vanilla whipped cream, and a scoop of the house made strawberry ice cream. We put them together and - split it. I wished I'd gotten my own it was so amazing - real whipped cream - REAL WHIPPED CREAM. The plate was pretty much licked clean. AMAZING! Best of all - the service and staff were super nice - helpful - so attentive! Highly recommend read more

Haven Gastropub. I'm a fan! This place has a classic pub feel to it. The ambiance and atmosphere are great. Big, open, dim, and welcoming. This place is done up right. Located in Old Towne Orange, on Glassell, this pub is definitely worth a visit. I came here for my first time last week for lunch and was not disappointed. We honestly kind of stumbled upon it. I don't know the area much at all, so I took to Yelp to help me figure out lunch plans. After seeing this place at over 2,000 reviews, I knew this place must be up to something. Service is on point and friendly. Our waiter was very personable and made sure we were well taken care of. He noticed me looking at pictures on Yelp and advised against it, as their menu changes quite frequently, so keep that in mind while you browse. Classics, like the Haven Burger, Lamb Burger, Truffle Mac n Cheese, and Hand-Twisted Pretzel seem to be solid staples here, however. I decided to go with the Haven Burger, priced at $18, and was not disappointed. I'm a very plain eater most of the time, so that's how I ordered it, plain, with just the garlic aioli. The food took roughly 10 minutes to get to the table. It tasted DELICIOUS. One of the best burgers I've had in a while, no doubt. The bun was nice and soft, the meat was tender and juicy, and the overall flavor was solid. I highly recommend. The burger comes with a big side of fries, as well, which were OK. Go ahead and give this place a try if it's been on your bucket list. It's definitely a pretty fun spot. While I didn't drink during my visit, it looks like a fun place to grab some beers or cocktails. I would definitely return in the future. The price is slightly steep for what you get, which is my only complaint about this place. I get the whole gourmet burger thing, but $18 seems a little much. read more

Great location, great beer selection. Didn't try a cocktail, but the other patrons seemed to enjoy them. Price points might be a little higher than I expected for the area, but for a nice sit down meal; I'd visit on occasion. Definitely enjoyed their beef carpaccio and duck confit. I usually dislike duck because it tends to have a gamey flavor, but I'd consider ordering this dish again. Seems like they rotate their menu. read more

Update #1 So back in 2009, Haven made its way onto the scene and it hit the local OC foodie world like an EF5 tornado. It made waves that reached far beyond the Orange curtain and people would flock here from the outer edges of the Yelp-o-sphere. Events were organized by several Elites (I am guilty of being one of them) and CMs and it was, for a long time, the poster child of "buzz" in the gastronomical circle of suburbia. Was this Los Angeles? Could Haven be a sign of things to come to OC? Yes, it was. It most certainly was. The writing was on the wall and it was written by someone with a man bun. Haven was one of the very first to come out during the boom time of the Gastropub, a time when the idea of having good food in a comfortable bar setting was a novelty, an idea that today is the norm but is somehow still treated with kit gloves. We got on our phones to coordinate with the owners and managers to let them know we wanted to come sample the menu, a group of 20+ Yelpers. Mind you that around this time, Yelp was only just gaining traction in OC, but news spread and LA Elites drove down to the Orange Circle to see what all the fuss was about, and that was saying something. Beef stew over buttered potatoes and rosemary with a balsamic reduction? Ox Tail pasta and wild mushrooms? Neck of Lamb? Warm Duck Confit Salad with goat cheese? Fig Bread Dessert with a bourbon caramel drizzle? What is going on here? This is a bar, isn't it? But it has a properly posh menu. And after reading the extensive offerings, one would be inclined to wonder if they forgot to tip the valet (there is no valet here). Today, we expect to see these items at every other place we plop down at with the waiter or waitress describing where their water came from complete with acidity levels. Haven was, for a time, THE place to be, a place that carried clout before it was even known, a place that rivaled the animalistic attraction that you typically only find it Los Angeles. What Haven did for the OC food scene was open it up, fully, completely. Now I'm not talking about south OC with it's laugh-through-the-nose $$$$ rated restaurants, monocled sommeliers, and pseudo-Chelsea wait staff. No. I'm talking about the REAL food in Orange County that never got any attention, the north OC food scene outside of the 949, the mom and pop stops in strip malls and food courts that serve some of the best dishes found outside of your neighbor's brother's best friend's mother's kitchen. Orange County had always held phenomenal dining options that nobody ever paid attention to because the shining silicone diamonds of Newport and Laguna stole the featured pages in Saveur and Gastonomica. Today, after the fanfare has died down and the flood of gastropubs has washed on through, all that's left is a well known name and a lingering glory that I am saddened to see is fading away. Since my last review, I've continued to visit Haven in secret because what was once an exciting prospect has become a cliche, a deep and painful wound in what could have been (should have been) something immune to trite epithets. I was hopeful that Haven would emerge from the ironic grave it found itself in and rise from the proverbial ashes, but Haven is by definition a gastropub and so it shall remain. The service over the years has remained exceptional and the dining environment has also retained its original warmth. The menu has evolved quite a bit and has seen multiple iterations of the same dish while ousting entire taste profiles because, though good, failed to fit the image of the establishment. I believe it is important for a menu to change constantly with the seasons, with the times, with the people, so be aware that if you come only infrequently, you might not be able to repeat your previous dining experience. Some of the dishes have remained creative and unique, almost daring (Octopus and root vegetable salad, Wild Boar, Mushroom Agnolotti). Other (most) dishes have become old hat (tater tots, tacos, poutine, kale). The prices have always been high, but inflation has made an even deeper mark so what started out as expensive dinners has become expensive bar food with all the expected accoutrements - smaller portions, heavy sauces, creative plating, arugula. The beers have remained interesting though very expensive. With so many breweries within a 3 mile radius and several of them having proper kitchens with impressive menus, it is a wonder how much longer I'll be able to justify returning to Haven even for a drink. Food is no longer a focus for me here since I've seen what it used to be, and though the food now isn't bad, it is sad that it's turned into a stereotype. In 2009, the well-heeled patrons came and enjoyed their drinks: whiskeys neat, beers dark. Drunken conversations were kept to a minimal volume. Today, it's hipsters and millennials, vegans complaining about the butter, and the few remaining originals wondering, "What happened?" read more

Greetings everyone, I'm not a frequent or consistent Yelp user but this message is long overdue. In May of 2021, I took my wife on a weekend getaway for our wedding anniversary and we spent the weekend in Los Angeles, specifically in the Anaheim area. While in Anaheim, we decided to frequent a cozy little Establishment called Haven Craft Kitchen & Bar that was recommended by my sister n law. We ordered our meals and my wife had a little side order of some of their house cornbread that was made and served in a little mini cast iron skillet. I didn't think anything of it until my wife gave me a nibble. One taste of that cornbread and my tastebuds thought I was tasting something from my ancestors. I had to look around to see where I was. Now as a black man born in Chicago and raised in Richmond California, I had assumed that I've already tasted the best cornbread ever. Well, that is, until I visited this hidden jewel of a place. 6 months later my wife was visiting her sister who lives in the Anaheim area. So I placed a special order of 15 orders for her to bring back. Within another 3 months my wife's sister came to visit us in Fresno California where I live, and I had her stop at Haven Craft and grab me 20 more orders. Yeah, call me crazy but I had to have my stash. Lol. Since then, I've gotten down to about five pieces left in my special 19 foot freezer that I purchased in 2019 when I knew Covid was going to put humanity on its back. My wife just went to visit her sister again a month ago and yes, I had her bring me back 15 more orders of that epic cornbread. If my mom ever found out that I love this cornbread more than hers she'd probably remove me from her will. Lol. I'm not sure who the owner of haven Craft hired in his kitchen as the cook, but that person deserves a fat raise. I'm sure I'll get around to tasting something else on their menu. But for now, this amazing restaurant will keep me driving 4 hours and 15 minutes, and 518 miles round trip just to get my cornbread fix. I am officially team Haven Craft until the wheels fall off. thank you haven craft kitchen and bar for accommodating such a big party for us tonight! it was my brothers graduation dinner and they gladly seated our 10+ person party (ofc we made reservations). i've been here before awhile ago, but today i ordered the burger which comes with fries on the side, and it was very very good! the meat was cooked perfectly with some pink, the fries were crispy, and the company & ambiance was amazing! the wait staffs were super friendly and attentive too! thank you very much to the restaurant and staffs, it was a night to remember! read more

Love this place as my local hangout. Come say hello to Jim and Greg at the bar and ask them what's new on the bar menu! Or hang out at one of the tables and get some great grub! I do miss the pretzel and the spicy Jidori chicken. Chef, can we pls have those back? Never had a bad experience here. Everyone is super nice and reasonable. If you don't like something just ask them. They are always trying to do the right thing for every patron. Bon Appetit!! read more

Our second time eating and drinking here. Short and concise menu makes its easy to figure out your choice. They definitely are masters of the minilisctic approach. The bartender is adept in his craft, and the flavor of his drinks matches. Even short staffed the day we came in, the staff, especially our waitress was nothing but smiles. Highly recommend for ambience, whiskey, mimosas, and food. Cheers to the owners and staff. read more

Service 3 stars food 1 star beer 3 stars Pouring technic: 0 star This place is loud. People start to get drunk and shouting around 9pm already. The waitress who pour beer for me did a bad job. there was no foam at all. It's like drinking cold barely water....ugh...My sad white beer. +++ Chicken liver toast: It looks excited. The plating is perfect, the taste is well balanced. The chicken liver is lightly salted and smooth, together with the sweet vinegar, raspberry and crispy fluffy toast. It's a perfect bite. -++ Deviled egg: The eggs are smaller than the usual ones we had, the taste is there, not amazing, it's mediocre. --- Dry aged burger(Medium, well) : Skip this shit! It took forever to come. like 20+ minutes. The meat patty fell apart, it's dry and bland. blue cheese is disgusting. What happened? from the tasty Chicken liver to this crap? I have never had to send back such a simple drink before. They weren't even busy it was just awful. A dirty Sherlies, sprite, grenadine and vodka. Every drink we had was not good. Still very friendly staff made up for it in a way, so much so I felt bad about leaving this review but it's just... so bad. Sorry. read more

I made last minute reservations for Valentine's Day. We were seated promptly at 9:45pm. Our server Mitzi was super attentive and sweet. I had two of their spicy margs and they were delicious! I loved my bf's steak more than I liked my pasta I ordered. I still enjoyed my meal however! Great experience. Would dine in again for sure! read more

Mediocre at best. Service was poor. We had no less than 5 people to deal with. One took our order and we never saw him again, two separate people brought our one round of drinks, one brought our food and some other came to check on us late in the meal and bring our bill. Who are we tipping? And the food was just okay. A $24 hamburger needs to be cooked perfectly to order and taste great. Mine was overdone and merely okay, nothing remarkable. Neither my wife nor I were asked about whether we wanted another drink until the end of the meal as they were clearing out plates. That's too late. I also love how the server stands there waiting for you to calculate their tip like a vulture instead of leaving the bill with you to review at your leisure. Never again. read more

I came here with a party for a graduation celebration and the service and food were fantastic. Nicole, our server, was so attentive and wonderful. The food was delicious. I had the chilaquiles, the chorizo hash was so good. The donuts are an amazing dessert. Once again, thank you Nicole for your service; we had a great time!! read more

My husband and I attended the Pliny tasting event yesterday. We were so impressed by the organization! The nice owner came out to greet everyone and put up outdoor space heaters along the line. He explained the process, took everyone's orders and promptly sat the patrons. Server and staff were friendly and our appetizer pork tacos were tasty. We had a vegetarian in our party and he said all he was able to find was a pasta/mushroom dish and the corn bread, neither of which would work for you, I'm afraid.

The only ding about seating is you are sat with strangers it is not a private table. Luckily we had a fun older couple at our table so it made the conversation more lively. Otherwise don't go here with an expectation of an intimate/ private date night. They also offer a limited food menu but looked very promising. However, we were here for a night cap so just dabbled in drinks. The bartender had a seasonal menu of 4 cocktails he created. He explained the drinks and then had us try each one with a straw. I have gone the past 2 years and never had issues getting it on the first day. This year was different. I got there around 5:05 and walked into the shop to see a lot of tables empty. I was shocked to see that. I waited in line with maybe like two people in front of me and guess what they asked of Pliny was still available. The guy working said to the people in front of me that they sold out. It was my turn I asked if they had it and the guy said that they had a line since 3pm and that they sold out of the keg. We ended up getting two beers since we went anyways but that's when things didn't add up. He kept telling all the other people that started to show up the same thing. These are reasons why it didn't add up 1) empty seats inside but had a line since 3pm and beer was released at 4pm 2) I don't think the people going for younger would just order one beer and not try other RR beers? 3) only one guy working beer counter and having to clean the tables and make sandwiches? 4) 12 oz pours of beer and keg with about 1984 oz would make it 166 beers. No way they sold 166 beers in an hour with one person working the bar and shop empty in an hour. They could have posted on their instagram or socials that they sold out but failed to do so. I'm sure a lot of people all night were disappointed to see that they didn't have it or post anything about it.

My partner surprised me with a reservation here for Valentine's Day, hoping that the good reviews would meet our expectations. Unfortunately, our experience was far from pleasant, and we ended up leaving before completing our prix fixe meal. Our first impression came when we called 20 minutes before our reservation to let them know we'd be 5-10 minutes late (which, admittedly, was our mistake). The response we received was, "Oh, thank God." I was initially stunned, as we were just trying to give them a heads-up, and we were apologetic about the delay. The host quickly followed with "Just kidding!" as if we were in on the joke, but the whole exchange felt unprofessional. Upon arrival, the same host informed us that they were running a little behind and suggested we grab drinks at the bar or stand outside. We opted for drinks, but after waiting 15 minutes to be served due to a crowded bar, the bartender had a sour attitude throughout the interaction, which made us feel like we were an inconvenience. After our drinks arrived, we were finally seated 30 minutes after our original reservation time. We then waited another 15 minutes before a server approached us. While the server took our order, they made no effort to acknowledge the long wait we had endured, nor did they try to compensate for the delay. Another 15 minutes passed before a dish we didn't order was delivered to our table. It turned out to be meant for the party seated next to us, who had arrived after us and ordered later. This mistake added to our frustration, as we were already starving by this point. Eventually, we received our starter nearly 30 minutes later (an hour and 15 minutes after our reservation). By this time, we had lost our appetite, and my partner and I decided we were ready to leave. Another 15 minutes passed before our main dish arrived, and we took the opportunity to express our disappointment to the server, who apologized and explained that the kitchen had been backed up all evening. The server kindly offered to comp our drinks from the bar, which we appreciated. They even suggested another drink, but by then, we just wanted to leave. The server also mentioned they would check into whether we could receive a discount on our meal, which was promising. As we began eating our main course, we ultimately decided we didn't want to continue. We asked for our meal to go and requested the check before dessert. The server provided us with takeout containers, and we paid for the meal (with drinks comped). However, there was no further apology or mention of any compensation for the extended wait, despite what we had been told earlier. After paying, we spoke to the host and politely inquired if there could be any additional compensation, as we had now been at the restaurant for over 2 hours, had no dessert, and paid for the full prix fixe meal. The host made an attempt to find a solution but ultimately said that they had already covered the drinks and that "$30 should be enough, right? You understand, right?" They then mentioned that an important piece of kitchen equipment had broken just before dinner service, which caused the delays. This was never communicated to us in advance, which left us feeling even more frustrated. We chose not to push for further compensation, understanding that the host was likely dealing with numerous other complaints. While the food and drinks were enjoyable, the overall experience was a sour way to spend Valentine's evening. I understand the challenges of managing service under pressure, especially when unexpected issues arise. However, there's no excuse for failing to be transparent and proactive in informing customers about delays--particularly when they've made reservations in advance. Instead of wondering when our food would arrive, we would have appreciated being told upfront about the situation. Throughout the evening, my partner and I remained respectful, and all we wanted was for the restaurant to make an effort to acknowledge the slow service and offer some form of compensation without us having to ask. I first visited Haven about a year ago. My girlfriend and I were walking around Orange Circle, and were getting hungry. Not really knowing the area that well, we happened upon Haven Gastropub. What intrigued us was the fact that they touted their food as being "gourmet comfort food." So we went in on that quiet Sunday afternoon and had a seat. We looked over the menu and found some great sounding food items, but we weren't ready for a heavy dinner so we ordered up a few appetizers. I had the mac 'n' cheese, and my girlfriend had a tasty salad (I can't really remember its name though). We then looked over the beer list and found that there is an amazingly vast and varied selection of beers at Haven. Beers for every taste, really! Back then, we were not all that into "beer knowledge", so we told our waiter what kind of beer we liked, and asked if one of their craft beers were comparable. He suggested a beer that completely blew us away and subsequently turned us into complete beer snobs! If it hadn't been for our visit there, we would never have gotten into beer and experimenting with different local craft brews. We had such a great time, the next visit we asked our waiter what was popular on the menu. Needless to say...the Haven Burger was the next step towards being completely obsessed with this restaurant. We have been back dozens of times since (even though I often forget to check in on Yelp), and every visit is enjoyable. Our most recent visit, however, prompted me to finally write a review. We sat at the bar this time, and Sheryl, our bartender, was awesome! We order up some beers, and she was so personable and engaging that it made our lunch really enjoyable! In fact, I noticed her making some bloody mary's, and I commented to my girlfriend that, since we love a good bloody mary, we might need to try one next time we came in. When I looked back to my drink, sitting next to it was a little taster glass of their bloody mary mix (which Haven makes themselves)! It was amazing! I then told my girlfriend that "I bet this tastes good with some olives." One of the waiters, who was waiting for drinks to serve his table, must have overheard me because he speared a few olives for us to dip in the mix! Now that's some up-sell, because next time we go, we'll be getting a bloody mary for sure! Now, I'm not saying that the Haven staff is gonna give away freebies all the time. I am basically just trying to illustrate that this place has good service, and, as with any restaurant, every now and then you happen upon the 'above-and-beyond' type of service we received from Sheryl. In summary: Haven Gastropub has: - Great service - A vast and varied beer selection for newbies and beer aficionados alike. I have to say, my experiences here have been a bit bamboozling to say the least. There I sat, trying to remember and tell the bartender the name of the beer that I had the last time I was there, "Union Road.... Union Spike.... Union Iron...." "We don't have any beer like that," the pompous bartender proclaimed. "We have a beer called Union Jack." Wow, I thought. Wow. Anyway.... I wish I could say that was my only confusing experience here, unfortunately though, I cannot. So we finally get a table in the back and I plop my car keys down on it (that's called foreshadowing). Anyway, myself, my brother and a friend of mine were fortunate enough to have an attractive server - now, I'm not one to hit on a lady while she is working, but looking at a decent looking girl is a hell of a lot better than having Obese Charlie bring me my UNION JACK. So after a few beers deep, not only did our server seem to get even more attractive, she then started to get a little flirtatious. Yeah, I know that's how the tip game works, but for the sake of sentiment, I was going to accept these advances as real. So the night went on, she kept the games up and even grabbed my keys off of the table and made fun of the large mace canister on the key chain (I borrowed my female roommates car, I swear).... So yeah, at the moment, this little hottie seemed to be more game than an Olsen Twin after a 1/5 of Popoff and a few Xanax's. Right as I turned to my brother to confirm this, she brought us all free shots. Yeah, it's on. A bit later as I then began to initiate a plan on how to officially take down this little minx, my brother showed me the bill with her number written on it. And boom goes the dynamite. It was a Friday, so through the fate of, uhh, the weekend, I determined that Sunday night would be a good time to call. Scratch that, I was twenty-five at the time and still a pussy; so I sent her a text message around four, only to not get an answer back. Ok... I thought to myself. This chick was way too hot to not go down without a fight. It now being around eight, I called her up and left a voice mail. What did I get thirty minutes later? A text from her saying (we'll refer to her as spunky) "Spunky does not exist." What in the hell? If I must say, that was some pretty WTF shit right there. I can only assume that she had a boyfriend, but who the hell knows. I really hope the owners/management check their yelp reviews, because if so they would notice a startling trend: SUCKY SERVICE. We have been here a handful of times in the last year or so and every time the service is awful. Usually, it is just my husband and I on a rare date night. We will sit at the bar and the bartenders seem pretty oblivious to us more often than not. The one bartender with the really long beard has been so rude its pretty unbelievable. Both of us are in the service industry (my husband is a GM and I was a server for five years during college), so I am pretty forgiving on a wait/bar staff because I know the job is tough. But their attitude is such a turn off it is pretty sad, because the place would definitely be a five star place if not for the weird, unfriendly vibe they give off. Yesterday, we went with our parents and our kids. I was unsure if this was a kid-friendly restaurant, but when we walked in I saw high chairs and decided to stay. (if you don't want to cater to kids that is fine, but get rid of the high chairs because it is sending mixed signals). They don't have kids menus, and when my one year old got a little antsy we asked if there was any bread or crackers he could nibble on while we waited for our order. There was none, according to our server (REALLY, you couldn't find ANYTHING in the back just to make us happy?? whatever). The service through out the meal was ok. He disappeared for awhile and didn't have the friendliest demeanor, but maybe he was busy and apparently the place doesn't like to hire people who know how to smile. He dropped off the wine flight with out explaining which wine was which and my mother in law had to ask for the wine menu and then guess which one she was drinking. Father in law had to ask for more water. The thing that bothered me was the check for me and hubby was $50 (would have been $80 before an industry discount) and I left him a 20 dollar tip. He grabbed our cash at the same time as our parents credit card for their bill and when he returned he dropped off the credit receipt and a box. There was no "thank you" and no "have a great night". I am sorry, but every tip i have ever gotten I always say thank you, and have a great night. Especially if it was a decent tip. This was just the icing on the cake for me. The food here was delicious and beer selection on point, but the staff is rude and entitled. Not sure if we will be back which is a bummer. read more

I never thought much of Orange, but fell in love with Old Towne just walking around before getting to Haven. A trick that many may not know is that there is a huge parking lot behind the restaurant and a walkway that takes you to the front door. Next time, I'll park there, but I liked the stroll down to the restaurant. I love the decor in the restaurant and the staff is hip, young, fun, but soooo knowledgable. We admitted that it was our first time there and they were so cool and started to give us the rundown on how the place works. Two huge chalkboards with specials - one with the beers on tap and the other with food specials. My friend wanted to go for a beer on tap, so she picked the one with the most alcohol content first, but then the waiter asked her what beers she likes and made a suggestion based on that and she LOVED her beer (ordered a second, in fact - good thing I was driving). I started with water with every intention of checking out a cool cocktail on the list (I'm a sucker for fresh herbs in my drinks). Unfortunately, once we dug into our food, I forgot... We had these battered, stuffed squash blossoms that were just so good that we ordered another plate. We also had some fries to share and some mac n cheese... OMG!! It was so good - the way I dream of making it at home. Perfect. My friend saw the Chef come out - she recognized him from Facebook, but I refused to let her go talk to him (she was on her second beer and I didn't want to look lame). Now that I look back, I wish I would've given him a hug! I saw the burger in a magazine and got that --- NO JOKE. Seriously. NO JOKE. Best. Burger. Ever. My friend got the pulled pork sammy and then we saw someone with a tuna salad and we asked what it was and were told it was a watermelon salad, so we got that for dessert! It was PERFECT! We wanted to stay, but had a long drive. What we didn't know when we got our bill was that it was Happy Hour when we ordered, so some of our food was discounted!! BO-NUS!! I really wish I gave the Chef a hug. We are definitely going back and starting with dessert and working our way back. Actually 3.5 stars This place has a lot of positives and a few shiny negatives. They are a little pricey, so be forewarned that even though they serve pub food, this is fancy pub food that they can charge you extra for. They use organic and sustainable products where they can and the cuisine is interesting and flavorful. Delicious: *Burger- but you get it the way they make it, no substitutions *Brussels Sprouts- I know what you are thinking..."No." But they are divine...a friend and I decided to share them because the rest of the table declined. However, once they tasted them (after our oohs and aahs) we were all practically wrestling for them. *Shepperd's Pie- extremely rich, it has a cream based sauce, not a brown gravy, but very good The decor is lovely, a great place for a date or if you want to feel like you are actually going out somewhere special and not just schlepping to the local eatery. I think their beer selection is pretty good, but not the best I've seen. They do have Firestone Union Jack on tap and that's pretty great. So, the negatives? *Inconsistent service. The wait staff is very friendly, but the service can be slow and spotty. They forgot my food once and I had to wait 25 minutes to finally get it .They were super apologetic and didn't charge me for it, but still... *Ketchup- Seems like it wouldn't really matter, but you've seen the rest of the reviews- don't mess with a persons condiments. I'm sure they are proud of their ketchup, and that's fine, but it is too sweet, not enough vinegar. They should at least have some of the real stuff on hand just in case...come on, just one bottle. *Seating- I know, random, but I have had more uncomfortable seating situations there than any other restaurant. The first time I went, they put us in the window seat, which has a pretty view, but I was literally falling out of it because the bench was so small and highly polished. I kept sliding around, super uncomfortable and we had to move. Another time we were seated in a long bench against the window, and the table is positioned exactly so that when you sit down, you crack your knee on the table leg as you slide in...and I'm not a spazz, three people in our party hit their knees painfully hard. read more

The first time I came here, I was in search of a gastropub like Father's Office in LA. I was not disappointed. Haven Gastropub not only has an extensive bar, but also an extensive dinner menu and a smaller late night menu. My friend, Charlie P., and I came for dinner and ordered the French Onion Soup, Mac n Cheese, Truffle Fries, Crispy Pork Belly, Braised Short Rib and for dessert, Candied Bacon Ice Cream. The broth of the French Onion Soup was delicious with a crunchy crostini smothered with a Gruyère cheese. The Mac n Cheese was creamy and cheese with a broiled top of parmesean and breadcrumbs. It was advertised with black truffles, but I had difficulty tasting it, but still amazing. The Truffle Fries were okay. I wasn't too crazy for these since about two weeks ago I had some in Vegas (another post for another day). The Fries were a little soggy, but still was able to taste the truffles . The Crispy Pork Belly was presented beautifully and tasted amazing. The fat was really crispy and melted in my mouth. The Brasied Short rib fell off the bone and was very tender. And finally, the Candied Bacon Ice cream has a smokeiness in the maple flavored ice cream and bits and pieces of the candied bacon. The next time I came was for late night after clubbing with Angela D. and Charlie P. loved it so much the first time, that he joined us as well. We ordered the Mac n Cheese again, the Haven Burger, Tarte Tatin and Irish Car Bomb. The burger was pretty good. The meat was perfectly cooked and topped with picked red onions and roasted red peppers, doesn't compare to Father's Office, but will do for the time being. Both desserts were delicious as well. The Tarte Tatin is an apple tart topped with blue cheese ice cream. The tart crust was heavenly and the apple was cooked beautifully. The blue cheese ice cream was a little weird, but I thought it went well with the apple. The Irish Car Bomb was also really yummy. On top of the cake was Guinness ice cream with a chocolate and caramel sauce drizzled on the side. Overall, my experience at Haven Gastropub has been amazing each time. I'm pretty sure I will be coming here for the rest of my time in Orange County area. read more

CHECK YOUR BILLS!!!!! The sales tax is WRONG! The sales tax rate in the POS computer is still 9.25% (7.75% since July 1, 2011) Water: Yes, they charge you. I have been to higher end restaurants, and water is free. This place jibs you anyway you can. As for the food part......it was just ok. Small portion. Price is not too expensive, just that I would expect the portion to match the price. If you have time, read below. The subtotal of our bill came out to be :$326.25. Tax (9.25%): 30.18. Total : $356.43. Service fee is 18% : 63.28 (Somehow if you do the math, the POS is set at 17.754%. If it was true 18%, it is $64.16). All together is $419.71. Manager insists this is correct since the Service fee ($63.28) + Subtotal ($326.25) Total before tax: $389.53 Sales tax (7.25%, according to the store manager, it is correct) Total out the door: $419.71. See anything wrong here? The thing is, 63.28 is ALREADY taxed!!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's the correct math (FYI, Grat is taxed under CA law): Subtotal $326.25 Tax (7.75%): $25.28 Total: $351.53 Grat (17.754%, since that's what the POS is set at): $62.41 Total after Grat: $413.94! A difference of $5.77!!!!!!! Or you wanna do the Tax separately for the Tax for food and service? Here: Subtotal $326.25 Tax (7.75%): $25.28 Total: $351.53 Grat from Subtotal (17.754%): $57.92 Grat from Tax (17.754%): 4.49 Total after Grat: 413.94! Still the same!!!!! Conclusion: Yes, $5.77 is NOT a lot of money for a bill thats over $300. However, if everyone in the restaurant is paying without knowing, the restaurant is generating income from cheating their customers. This CANNOT be excepted!! Just watch out when you are paying. Went for lunch, huge letdown. Frisse and radicchio salad with lardons of double smoked bacon and poached egg: nice runny egg but the salad dressing was not flavorful, the 'lardons' were tiny strips of bacon, rock hard and only tasted of smoke; not in any way resembling the larger cubes of crispy cured pork belly that are pivotal in a proper Salad Lardon. And no crunchy croutons to enjoy the runny egg yolk with. Goose Pastrami Sandwich with seasonal pickle: grey, dry goose with no resemblance to pastrami other than it was salty, generous amount of thin sliced red cabbage tossed with Russian dressing which tasted of and added nothing, overall it was dry and flavorless. A note, I've made duck breast pastrami that was incredible, evoking both duck and pastrami and made a great Ruben with it so I was especially excited about the goose pastrami; it did not deliver. I substituted fries for the potato chips, and appreciated them letting me do that without an added charge. The fries were great, very different, at the same time crunchy and soft, the fresh herbs tossed with them definitely added to the experience. However, the homemade ketchup served with them was lousy. Bland and boring, the fries tasted better without it. We asked for salt because both dishes needed it and was bought a selection of two salts and black pepper. With a big pinch of salt the ketchup was a bit better but homemade doesn't add much to a gastronomic restaurant if Heinz Ketchup would have been better. The seasonal pickles was a very small amount of thinly sliced carrot (3 slices), some onions and 1/2 a thin slice of pickle. I loved it until I ate the pickle which was so mushy that it fell apart in my mouth and disintegrated. No desire to go back and hope for something better. read more

Got taken here for my birthday. Been looking forward to this place for a while and it did not disappoint. I was able to try every item we ordered in our party and they were all good. I had the Shepherds Pie, it was delicious. The layer of mashed potatoes on the top was so good. I tried the mac n cheese. It was good, but I've had better. Eat Chow's man n cheese has a lot more flavors in it. The Haven Burger. What a great burger! Right up there with Father's Office and Congregation. The meat was juicy and full of flavor. Final meal was the Chicken & Waffles. It was very good, the sauce that came it was great. The server said the chicken was fried a French style. Those French sure know how to fry shit good! Can't forget the beer! I had the Rodenbach, it's a sour beer, which takes getting used to but was amazingly good! I also had the Erdinger Hefeweizen, which may be the best Hefe I have ever had. I could not leave without trying the Strawberry Beer Float. It was great! I have heard of beer floats before, but never had the guts to try it, it sound so odd. Glad I did, it was great! They use Samuel Smith Organic Strawberry Ale. Liked it so much, I have made it for friends twice since my visit. You can find the beer at the High Time Cellar. You can make your own for half the price, but don't tell them I told you. ;) The service was very good and they were all friendly. The location is very cool, it's an area in Orange called "The Circle in the City". You can definitely fill a whole night here, jumping between all the bars and restaurants. Ok, I can't believe what I'm reading on here. These posts must be from employees or the owner. You may forget you're in America? That could be the dumbest description of this place ever. The atmosphere in this place isn't anything special. In fact, it has no atmosphere at all. There is no pub feel at all in this place. Basically I'm pretty confident you WON'T forget you're in America. The beer selection is outstanding, but it will cost you. Especially because they have no happy hour. The menu was pathetic. I like how someone posted you have to try the burgers. Look at the one page (one sided) paper menu again - there is only one burger! I went with the buffalo wings which were $10 - which I didn't mind - until it only came with 6 buffalo wings! We asked for a side of ranch, which they said they don't have - nor will they ever have. They kind of made us feel stupid for even asking. At the end of the day, this place is good for beer geeks. But at those prices, you won't get any of the Chapman students in there. And with that limited menu, not to mention the prices, you won't get a lot of families in there. But they will do well with the beer geeks - who will only have 2 beers and leave - because the prices and the alcohol content are both pretty high. So I really don't see how they are going to survive. It truly is a forgettable place. I'm not a big restaurant chain supporter, so I'll visit this place in a few months down the road to see if they have done anything different to give me a reason to go back. My only concern is - they'll be out of business before I return. read more

I am writing to formally express my dissatisfaction with a recent experience at Haven Craft Kitchen. While I initially enjoyed the food and service, my experience changed when I moved to the bar with a friend who joined me later. The bartender, whom I believe is named Josh, appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, which raised immediate concerns. Despite his charm, his behavior quickly became inappropriate. He began flirting with my friend, who made her disinterest clear multiple times. Additionally, he interrupted our conversation to discuss a whiskey recommendation while slurring his words, which we politely declined, as neither of us are whiskey drinkers. Despite our attempts to enjoy the evening, Josh made a cocktail for my friend without her request and continued to make unwanted advances. This made us extremely uncomfortable, prompting us to pay our tab and leave. After taking a brief walk, we returned to our car parked behind the restaurant, where we found the same bartender passed out at a table. This incident reflects poorly on Haven Craft Kitchen and raises serious concerns about professionalism and customer safety. While I appreciated the quality of food and service from other staff members, this experience has led both my friend and me to decide not to return. The restaurant's interior ambiance is pleasant, resembling a high-end bar. However, the exterior does not live up to the same standard. I would have rated it 3 stars based on aesthetics alone, but I had to lower the rating due to the quality of the food and service. Let's start with the food. I ordered a kids' burger, kids' grilled cheese, and kids' grilled chicken. The burger was satisfactory, the grilled chicken was well-seasoned but had an unusual taste (maybe it was frozen chicken). As for the grilled cheese, it should be removed from the menu as it was subpar. Additionally, I ordered a couple of lobster rolls. While the brioche bread was acceptable, the lobster itself was of poor quality, likely freezer burned and lacking in flavor. The sauce on the sandwich was notably bland. Regarding the service, the servers were polite and may have performed better with proper training. However, they all seemed to forget about us while we were seated outside, despite being directed to our table by the hostess. Each time we requested another drink, condiments, or additional napkins, the servers would acknowledge their oversight, promise to return promptly, and then delegate the task to someone else. I am hesitant to leave negative feedback, but I hope this review assists others in making an informed decision. In my opinion, the experience does not justify the cost. read more
