They were doing a gift card special on their website. Pay $60 for a $70 gift card. I figured I would get one bc I was planning to grab food for the family. One thing to note is that gift cards can NOT be used toward any of the catering menu items. So my plan did not work out too well. I ended up getting a few family meals with the gift card, but then spent more for catering since I had about 15 ppl to feed. I worked with Alice on the phone and when I went to pick up she was there to greet and assist. I had set a pick up date and time (about 5-6 days out). I Called the day before to adjust the time and good thing I did bc the date was incorrect on paper. I asked to pick up a couple hours later and she adjusted and apologized about writing the wrong date. I tried Hawaiian BBQ Express today and ordered the mixed BBQ plate with extra mac salad. The portions were solid and the plate had a good mix of meats, which is exactly what I was hoping for. The BBQ had good flavor, and the mac salad was definitely worth getting extra. The service was great and the food came out fast. The ambiance is pretty basic, but everything was clean and comfortable. It's a good comfort food spot when you're craving a big plate lunch. We decided to give this place a try for dinner. We ordered the mini grilled shrimp plate. Which consist of shrimp, veggies,1 scoop rice and 1 scoop Mac salad. The mini plate was just the right amount of food and the shrimp w/veggies was very tasty. We also ordered the teriyaki chicken bowl and pot stickers. The Teri bowl was over flowing with a good amount of chicken. The flavor was teriyaki sauce was delicious. The pot stickers were delicious too! My husband just had an outpatient surgery at an area hospital, and in the recovery room the bland food would not do! Since he had no dietary restrictions, I decided to grab him something close by and this place was a perfect option! I ordered at the counter from very friendly staff who brought the food out and packaged hot within minutes! Faster than most popular chain drive thrus! It's pretty much set up as a carry out, yet there are a couple tables and chairs than seem to function more for waiting than for dining in. (Read: not for date night to impress!) I ordered the chicken and beef combo for under $20 with tax -- which was like a mountain of tender and well seasoned meat with a flavorful cooked vegetable medley and macaroni salad as sides. I really appreciated that the sides were substantial, and not used as filler in exchange for less protein. Hubby loved it and he was the envy of the nurses station, as the aroma of good homestyle food is hard to ignore! And I was so very thankful able to give my husband a great tasting and satisfying meal for his recovery and at a very reasonable price! I had been craving some Hawaiian barbecue, macaroni salad in particular. I stopped by Hawaiian BBQ Express for dinner (with plenty left over to take for work tomorrow!). I ordered my food to go: #1 combo-Hawaiian BBQ chicken, steamed rice, macaroni salad and steamed veggies. I ordered sides: macaroni salad, steamed veggies. I appreciate the friendly service. My food was brought to me once ready to go. The inside decor of the restaurant was bright and cherry. It was decorated with bright orange paint, surfboard and Hawaiian knick knacks. There's also photos of their drinks. The restaurant is small in size, but, still room for tables if you wish to dine inside. The food did not disappoint! The Hawaiian BBQ chicken was tender and full of flavor. The rice was not at all sticky. The macaroni salad was so good! The steamed veggies, could have been steamed a bit longer. Called for an order and drove 30 minutes to pick up for my family and then drove 30 minutes back home. When we started eating we noticed some of the BBQ chicken was sticky and it tasted sour on all 3 plates. Drove 30 minutes back to get my food remade after I called them. I asked if I could get a free drink for driving almost 1 1/2 hours and wasting gas and manager argued with me that they made $1600 dollars and no one else has complained about the food and then walked away. I really enjoyed the garlic shrimp. There was some kind of breading on the shrimps and cooked with a good amount of chopped garlic and onions. The steamed vegetables underneath were a good pair. My boyfriend got the curry chicken katsu, which he liked but we were surprised that the curry tasted a lot like Thai curry. In comparison to L&L, the macaroni salad and spam musubi were ok. The rice in the spam musubi was a little mushy and the sauce was kind of lacking in flavor. I'd still come back here to try other things since they have a lot of different food options. read more

I was more interested in checking out the Vietnamese place that was next door but there were too many loud people in there and I find loud people to be intolerable. Hawaiian BBQ Express was much quieter and more lowkey, which was a massive plus in its favor. Customer service was a fantastic - the cashier lady that took my order was very nice and a joy to speak with. She also gave me extra gravy, which no other Hawaiian bbq place has ever offered me before. It's never necessary but it's always a nice welcome change. As for food, I ordered spam musubi and a loco moco. Spam musubi is spam musubi. I generally don't have anything bad to say about it. The loco moco wasn't the best I've ever had. It was okay. The burger patties were a little tougher than most I've eaten and the eggs were cooked overhard. The latter isn't necessarily a bad thing but every other loco moco I've had has their eggs cooked so that there's still runny yolk which is how I prefer them in loco mocos. That's by no means a dealbreaker but if you want your eggs cooked a certain way, you'll want to tell them when you order instead of assume like I did. Overall, this was a nice experience. Vacaville is quite out of the way from where I live so I likely won't go out of my way to eat here again but if I'm in the area, I wouldn't be against returning based on my experience. read more

There is no major seating inside, so you mainly have to get takeout. Serve was once very good when they first opened, but unfortunately like many restaurants, service has dropped (still decent, just not great). It's so hard to find good Hawaiian anywhere and while you won't mistake it for a plate lunch In Maui, it's still a refreshing change from the over-fried stuff you normally get. The lumpia was excellent. The chicken was good and the teriyaki sauce was excellent. The fish was only okay. Thankfully not over fried but a bit tough on the edges.
