    18. Chicken Katsu
    Stacey M.

Was in the area and had a craving for Hawaiian Mac salad so that's how I happened upon this place. I got there about 15 min before closing and there were a few people waiting for their order, so I knew I made the right choice. I got the Chicken Katsu which came with 2 scoops of white rice and 1 scoop Mac salad and some really good gravy/dip. I could only finish half. I anticipated the Mac salad to be wiped out first (I was right) so I ordered another one as a side. This perfectly balanced my lunch leftovers. So one full meal vs the Mini meal was two meals for me. The exterior was brightly lit to find at night. I will definitely go back....the foqd was perfect for tender yet crispy ratio. The sauce was what made it great. And the salad, just what I craved in the first place

Hawaiian Drive Inn is a restaurant that a friend of mine showed me while I was back in San Jose, and I'm really glad I went. Given that the Bay Area doesn't have that much Hawaiian food in general, it's nice when there are good places that can make it well. The interior here is on the simpler side, but it's quite spacious and had a lot of tables to sit at. For the food I got the rice plate with BBQ chicken, short ribs, and macaroni salad. The meat here is fantastic, as it's juicy and is packed with flavor. None of it was dry, and it went well with the rice and mac salad. The portions are pretty decent, so a plate was enough for me at least. Highly recommend coming here if you're in the South Bay Area!

I've always driven by this place and finally had the chance to give it a try. The place was way more spacious than I expected. I ordered the BBQ mix and it took a little while to come out, but it was worth the wait. The meat was super tender and juicy, and the flavor was on point. I would come back for sure.

I visit this shopping center all the time, and the shaved ice sign has been calling to my daughter for a while. We finally decided to give it a try, along with some spam musubi. Unfortunately, it wasn't what we were hoping for. My daughter has tried musubi from a couple other places and she gave this one a 4 out of 10. As for the shaved ice, it was more like a frozen daiquiri than traditional shaved ice definitely not Hawaiian style. While the prices are more affordable than other spots, the quality just isn't there. I've been passing this place for years and thinking about trying it, and honestly, I wasn't missing a thing.

Located on the corner strip mall. Use the entrance behind the gas station. Fast and friendly service with a ton of choices. Great portions and quality food. Bbq mix plate great flavor and juicy and tender meats. Chicken katsu very crispy yet juicy inside. Highly recommend this location for those in the area.

Absolutely Disappointed -- Will Not Return This was one of the worst dining experiences I've had--not just in San Jose, but anywhere. Upon arrival, we noticed flies all over the front sitting area, which should have been a red flag. Unfortunately, hunger got the best of us, and we decided to give it a chance, hoping the kitchen was more sanitary than the sitting area. We ordered the seafood combo dinner, a chicken katsu combo, two BBQ chicken musubis, and chicken wings. The only positive aspect of our visit was that the food came out relatively quickly. When we asked for teriyaki or BBQ sauce--basic condiments that typically accompany katsu--the cashier, with noticeable attitude, told us it was already "mixed in" and that we didn't need any. Trusting her, we left without pushing the issue. Big mistake. When we got home and opened our meals, it was clear no sauce had been included or mixed in. The chicken katsu was extremely oily, overcooked, and dry. The seafood was so heavily fried that it was dried out completely, while the chicken in the seafood combo was pink and undercooked--an alarming food safety issue. This place failed on all fronts: sanitation, customer service, food quality, and preparation. I would give it zero stars if I could. We deeply regret not sticking to our original plan and choosing a more reputable Hawaiian BBQ spot. This location is not it.

I was looking for a place to get take out for dinner that would be close to the 101 and this spot met all the marks! We are big fans of Hawaiian BBQ and the four stars are for the food. It would be five stars if the service was a little faster. I tried calling ahead twice and there was no answer. I didn't want to order via Yelp grub hub because I had questions about the food. I showed up and there was no one ahead of me and it took about 13 minutes to get my food. Though I appreciate freshly prepared food, it felt a little long for a place called drive inn. There were two front line staff talkinh about their lives so I know they just didnt pick up tje phone. Now that I know, I will order online ahead of time. It's in a busy shopping center but there are designated parking spots. I ordered the BBQ plate with short ribs, chicken, and beef. There was just 1 short rib which made me really sad because it was soooo tender and sweet and flavorful. The chicken was super juicy and the beef was solid. Next time I will say more short ribs! The macaroni salad is heavy on the mayo but satisfying. This is definitely a take out spot though there is plenty of seating. I will be back!

This place does get busy so if you are on a time crunch, I suggest you call to place your order beforehand. We came here after Gavin's Vietnamese/Buddhist class was dismissed. It's the temple diagonally across the street from here. I wasn't anticipating the wait because I had a few meetings w/ my team in SG starting at 5PM. Gavin wanted the 2 meat combo: bbq chicken and teriyaki beef and I ordered the loco moco. We also ordered 2 sides of macaroni salad. It was served in one container as opposed to 2 separate side containers. I did not try Gavin's but my loco moco was good, but I would have preferred more gravy. Their macaroni salad was tangy and creamy! Parking sucks. But good comfort food.

I had such a great experience here! From the moment I walked in, the customer service was top-tier--she was very welcoming, attentive, and genuinely cared about making sure we had everything we needed .the new girl has a amazing vibe and is so friendly props to her she was doing it all on her own The food was just as impressive. Every dish came out fresh, full of flavor, and beautifully presented. You can tell they put real thought and effort into both quality and taste.

Came in for lunch. Staff was kind and efficient. I ordered the combo plate. Price was fair and was of good value as their portions are generous! Restaurant was clean. Parking was easy as we came in on a weekday.

A classic to go spot for katsu, spam masubi, macaroni salad, and rice. Portions are fairly generous. I always go for the mini plate katsu - it's the perfect portion and the stack it up!

A solid place to grab some Hawaiian food! Definitely hit the spot, but not the best I've had. Ordered the half kalua pork and bbq chicken, my friend got the short ribs. We both agreed that if we are in the area again we'll come back, otherwise, no strong urge to return (I might even prefer L&L).

Final Thoughts: 4.33/5…read more They were our caterer for a work party. This is a food truck and they seem to have everything ready to be served to us. Asian fusion foods are typically my go-to choice and so I was very excited that they were providing us food today. Food: Garlic Fried Chicken Bowl: 4.3/5 The sauce on this is divine with the chicken. It's like an unagi sauce with garlic in it. It has some saltiness, sweetness, and that umami flavor. Garlic taste and scent is present, but not too overpowering, which I really enjoyed. That flavor is great, but some places really overdo it for me. Just a personal preference though. For the chicken itself, it's very tender and juicy on the inside and still has some of that nice crunch on the outside. Perhaps this is because the cut of meat is the chicken thigh. It's not super crispy because I don't believe this is being fried to order for us. Seems to be food held in a warmer until its ordered. Kimchi was the side that they had provided with this dish and I am here for that. Some people aren't the biggest fan of this and I saw that from the looks my coworkers gave it. Personally, very much enjoyed it though. That sourness and spice from the kimchi just balances out this bowl really well. The veggies are nice and crispy. Gives it that freshness. Also, very slight detail and addition, but I always enjoy the sesame seeds and furikake sprinkle as a garnish. There's a nice nuttiness to it that they provide as a simple garnish. Spicy Tuna Poké: 4.0/5 This item was alright. The flavor was also really good, but I did get tired of eating just one type of poke protein. Typically when I go to get poke, it's 2 to 3 scoops of different proteins with various sauces to change up the flavor. I did get tired of this one after a few bites. The flavor of this item was very good though. There's a nice kick from it and the flavor tastes like a mix of kewpie mayo, soy sauce, sriracha, and sugar. Very simple, but you can't go wrong with those flavors. For the side, they added seaweed salad. Again, not your average side dish. Personally, I enjoyed it, but it might not be a common or familiar side dish for other individuals. It has a nice sweetness and nuttiness to it. For texture, there's a nice bite to it, which is ncie since the tuna is very soft and doesn't contribute much to the texture component. Menu: Small Their menu seems quite limited, but again, that is normal for a food truck, I believe. The items they provide do it just fine for me. I appreciate that they also have an option for the vegetarians. The menu we were provided was limited to 4 items, which is fine since the scale of this party wasn't anything too wild and we were able to satisfy everyone with what they provided. --------- Quality: Alright The quality of the food seems OK. It came out within a few minutes for us and I don't think it takes just a few minutes to fry that piece of chicken. I could be wrong though, so no one quote me on that. Just an observation. Not the highest expectations because their limited to the space and area in general. The product they provide is very good though. Overall, for something that has raw seafood in it, it seemed quite fresh and tasty. The items aren't made to order either and it's more assemble and serve to order, but again, they seem to be making it work with the product that they are selling. Price: Estimated Because this was a catering event, I am actually unaware of how much my administrator paid for the food. What I know is that she paid for a certain amount of bowls. From the looks of this item though, I want to estimate the price of each bowl being around $16 to $20 depending on the food item provided. Seems quite average for a bowl of food these days. Service: Quick and fast Because most of the food is already prepared and ready, the interaction with them itself is very limited. They took our order and provided us with the food. Nothing too significant to note and that is to be expected with the food truck. They were very sweet though and explained the menu items to be when I had a question. Ambiance: Simple and cute food truck The design on their food truck is so cute. The riceball is my favorite because it has this very cute face and just looks darling to me. The outside has a simple design with the name and logo on top and then perhaps some of the food items they provide written on the bottom section of the truck. Doesn't seem like anything too fancy, but simplicity is best for me. Location/Parking: Wherever they travel and navigate to Because they're a food truck, they can drive to you, which is really convenient. On Yelp, it states that their located on 36 Commercial Street in downtown, which might be where their truck is serving most of the time. Again, it is a food truck though, so they have the ability to drive to you and travel around to their customers, which is quite convenient is reaching a broader group of people.

For the second plate, we got another Chicken Katsu with the Beef (also an extra $0.50). One thing I really liked is the self-serve sauce station. They have katsu sauce that you can pump into small containers, along with teriyaki sauce and several additional sauce packets, so it's easy to customize your meal. The Chicken Katsu was crispy and tasty, but the Crispy Shrimp only came with three pieces, and the beef was just okay. The portions are also a bit smaller compared to Olioli Hawaiian BBQ, although the prices are noticeably lower. My biggest disappointment was that the plates come with a green salad instead of macaroni salad. For me, macaroni salad is part of what makes a Hawaiian plate feel complete, so I really wish that were included instead. Overall, it's a good value, especially if you have one of their coupons. I still prefer Olioli Hawaiian BBQ for the larger portions and more traditional Hawaiian plate experience, but Ono Hawaiian BBQ is definitely worth trying when there's a BOGO deal.

Who then proceeded to serenade Mom by changing the words to one of the songs he sang! She felt so special! AND finally, as part of their 13th anniversary, Noelani's was giving out coupons to their paying customers for free shave ice from Paradise Shave Ice who put a pop-up outside their restaurant. So yummy! And they were so super nice too - will definitely keep them in mind for any shave ice catering needs! We don't visit this restaurant as we're down in the South Bay, but we definitely plan to visit them more often! Thanks for making my mom's day so wonderful! This was an especially bittersweet birthday, as it was the first one without my dad, but somehow I think he was smiling down at us and blessing us today!

The chicken katsu is really good here. Sauce is a bit sweet for my taste, but not a dealbreaker…read more Mac salad is also very tasty. Portions are absolutely massive, and I usually can't finish a combo in one sitting. Prices are actually affordable as well! I'm looking forward to trying some non-chicken in the future

Yeah I decided to come here since I was getting a car wash in the area. I was intrigued because…read morethis is the first Hawaiian Bbq spot I've seen since Wikiwiki in college that serves curry!! I got the beef curry and it was pretty good. Interestingly enough the beef was the kind of beef in beef and broccoli, marinated and tenderized with corn starch, instead of the typical Hawaiian bbq beef slices. There was a deceptive amount of meat in this, it's definitely a solid portion. I almost wish there were more potatoes lol. The curry itself was just ok. The plate comes with 2 scoops of rice and 1 scoop of Mac salad for $18. Midly justified. I wish they had a combo curry and or bbq mix curry and not just beef. I miss wikiwiki's hamburg steak curry. The service was solid, with a kind young man ringing me up. I wish the menus were more descriptive, it's low key hard to order here, reminiscent of hood Chinese spots. The ambiance is typical of a Hawaiian spot. Interestingly enough a health inspector came to visit while I was eating, it seems everything went well, so the venue is good to go. Looking back, I'd come back if I was in the area and craving Hawaiian curry for the nostalgia. But low key if prolly rather have poke house across the street.
