Sashimi special
Ben B.

The presentation was nice, and the portions were ample. Most of the fish was easy to bite through, except the tuna, too much of the inner skin was left on. So the tuna was difficult to bite thru.

Dragon Roll, Qui - Gon Roll

Really good sushi! Had the dragon roll and Qui-Gon roll. Katsu curry was really good as well. Curry is a bit runny for me as I do prefer thick but I ate it all! Recommend trying!

Crab California rolls and Lobster Special Roll

We loved this restaurant I remember the first time my best friend and I went here, he literally forgot where he was and that he was at a restaurant the food was so good, he loved the food so much that when I asked what he thought about the food he looked up like he had been transported to another world and said what? And then I just let him enjoy his food. The service is very good as well, they are friendly and very attentive. The ambiance is calm, quiet, and cool. Also the temperature is pretty cool in the restaurant during summer so if your feeling too hot and want a place to cool off and get some great refreshing food this place is for you.

Service was good food was ok. Co worker got a roll and sashimi. She said it was ok nothing special. I got the bento box with chicken teriyaki chicken was dry, California roll, and mix tempura. I say the tempura was the highlight on my meal. Rice was too mushy for me and the miso soup was sweet for some reason.

Origami
Sharna E.

This is a great old school Japanese restaurant, don't sleep on this place . The food was delicious. The server Tim was great and made us Origami. Just be aware this place has been in the same location since 1967 and it kinda shows , but great eats !! We will definitely come back when visiting San Jose .

Friday Late Night & it was not busy at all, parking in the back or on the street, they are attentive when you walk in & get seated. They take your order right away, food does not take that long to come out, so IF your craving sushi & it's after hours, this is the place to come, because they are open Late Late. For the sushi was alright & pricing is OK, we got a few dishes, to try & I think, again they were just alright, I would be back just to try some more food that's on the menu & maybe at that time, it'll change my taste buds & the way I feel about the dishes.

Lunch combo with salmon and yellowtail nigiri
Joyce L.

Thursday noon: Grabbed their lunch special which is 2 items for ~$17 prior to tax and tip. I got the salmon and yellowtail nigiri, and it came with a side of lettuce and rice. Very simple and balanced meal. I only wish they also had a miso soup with the order too. I was surprised that they were half full around 1pm, so service may be a little slower. Great happy hour prices all day for $5 pints.

Good presentation but super sweet for some reason.

Atmosphere is nice, and one of the only places around open all day. But even the table next to us commented that the miso soup was very bitter. The rice served with my sukiyaki was I think pre plated from earlier in the day it had a crust on it. The beef for my Sukiyaki was also very tough. And the broth was watery and not flavorful. And the carrots were old and bitter. Not sure we will be back. The food was mediocre at best.

Gyoza
Francesca B.

Quickly seated, we started off with the tempura appetizer. It included an assortment of different vegetables (broccoli, squash, mushrooms, etc.) as well as two shrimp tempura pieces. The batter was crispy and soft, making it easy to eat without hurting the roof of your mouth. I thought we were starting off good with the vegetables, however the shrimp was over battered and barely packed with shrimp, I honestly felt like I was tasting 90% batter and 10% shrimp. Not bad, but don't think I'd order this appetizer again. We then ordered the Hawaiian roll and Triple X roll. The Hawaiian roll was a regular California roll with sashimi on top drizzled with unagi. The unagi was thin and very sweet but not enough for it to overpower the taste of the roll which I really enjoyed. Squeezing the lemon on top was the cherry on top and gave it that zesty taste that was needed. The pieces were a bit small but reasonable for the price. Next we had the Triple X roll, another California roll topped with tuna, jalapeños, masago, and a spicy sauce. This roll was a bit bland even with the extra ingredients added onto it but it was a perfect balance with how sweet the Hawaiian roll was. With two rolls and the vegetable tempura, I was still left a bit hungry so I also decided to order the Gyoza. The Gyoza was seared nicely, making the bite crispy and the inside was a bit juicy as well. It definitely fulfilled my appetite but again, was a bit mediocre at best since I've had better Gyoza. The inside was very homey, small, and clean. The bathroom was a little dirty however, there were writings all over the mirror and no toilet seatings. Overall, Okayama sushi was OKAY. I don't think this would be a go to spot for me as there are way better sushi places to dine in. If they increased the quality of the food, I would've loved to give this place a higher score.

Tonkatsu Calamari Tempura(App) Two Item Bento (Without Sashimi) House Salad
Noriko M.

Ordered(at recommendation of our server) a bento box with tonkatsu and calamari tempura , the tonkatsu was thin with a nice crunch and I had too keep everyone off of my calamari tempura it was exactly what you'd hope for, in addition to a very funny and kind server this was a very nice experience that I would recommend.

2 Items Bento Dinner (Without Sashimi) - Tonkatsu/Teriyaki Salmon
Justin S.

Came here for lunch and ordered the two item bento box with tonkatsu and teriyaki salmon. The tonkatsu came out crispy which is how I prefer most of my fried foods. The teriyaki salmon was plentiful for a bento box and was moist, I just wish it had more sauce. The servers was very friendly and accommodating! 4.2/5 I don't really dole out 5 stars but this play does a solid job with service and overall food quality.

Uni don
Maggie W.

The uni don at this spot is actually abysmal quality, especially for $27. So bitter, not creamy at all, and low in quantity. I don't know if it was due to the sea urchin not being fresh, but my coworkers and I decided to stop eating it due to fear of food poisoning/getting sick. Fortunately we did not, but it was such a massive waste of money that we were disappointed.

No one greeted us all the tables had dirty dishes on them. Didn't appreciate getting ignored and standing there for 10 minutes.

Good portion! Spicy garlic edamame was a great appetizer! We also got the hot sake & Sapporo (so refreshing)! Good service with friendly & attentive workers. I was surprised to see how big the space was! It's dimmed inside but still good enough light. No issue with parking - plenty spots available around the restaurant.

We walked into a cozy, welcoming space that makes it a good spot for a casual meal, especially when craving something warm and satisfying. The interior has a clean, modern feel with an open kitchen where you can see the noodles being prepared, adding a layer of transparency to the dining experience. The seating is comfortable and the energy of the room stays relaxed, making it easy to settle in for a meal without feeling rushed. The menu goes beyond traditional udon with options like curry udon, mentai cream udon, nabeyaki udon, and different tempura sets. We tried the mentai cream udon, which had a rich and flavorful sauce that paired well with the chewy noodles. The udon texture was the highlight, with a springy bite that felt fresh rather than overly soft, and the cream sauce was well balanced, with the mentai adding a subtle brininess that kept the dish from feeling too heavy. The portions are generous, and many dishes come with additional sides or toppings that make the meal feel more complete. The tempura and other small plates are also worth exploring if you want something beyond just noodles, and we found the tempura batter light and crisp, a nice contrast to the richer udon bowls. The restaurant can get busy during peak hours, and there is usually a wait, but once seated the service moves quickly and food comes out at a good pace. The staff handle the flow efficiently, and the turnover is fast enough that the wait does not feel excessive. The space feels clean and comfortable, with the open kitchen adding a sense of activity without being distracting. Parking can be a little challenging depending on the time you visit, so planning ahead or allowing extra time is worth considering. Prices are a bit higher than a typical noodle shop, but the quality of the noodles and portion sizes make it feel justified, and the craftsmanship behind the udon is evident in the texture and preparation. Udon Mugizo is a solid choice for anyone looking for well-made Japanese udon in a relaxed setting. The variety of flavors, generous portions, and consistently good noodle quality make it a place worth returning to try more dishes, offering a meal that feels both comforting and thoughtfully composed. The balance of fresh ingredients, careful preparation, and a welcoming atmosphere makes it a dependable stop for a satisfying bowl of noodles.

We're glad we picked here to show them what the Bay Area can do in terms of more authentic Japanese food. The decor is traditional and not fancy, but comfortable and clean. The shishito peppers were really tasty, not too hot, pleasantly hot. Edamame was typical, nothing really special, but it's a bit difficult to really elevate edamame. The braised pork was good and the lean parts were easy to selectively eat. Nothing here is aggressively seasoned, but also not at all bland, so it's a good balance of flavorful but not overbearing. The grilled chicken wings were okay, but nothing outstanding or memorable - but simple and fine. Our "main" dishes, the deluxe meshi, nike tofu, and okonomiyaki were all great! Really enjoyed all of them and they were again flavorful, authentic tasting, and generous portions to share. Wish this were a little closer to where we live, but we enjoy coming here whenever we do and I recommend this for trying more traditional dishes when you want something different than simple teriyaki and sushi rolls.

I liked their traditional izakaya decor inside. They also had a tatami seating area towards the back. We decided to go family style so that we could try more items on their menu. We ordered the Niku Trio Set, which included braised pork, grilled chicken wings, niku tofu, edamame, and shishito. The food came out really quickly. Other than the edamame, which was very bland, everything was very flavorful. The pork was very soft, and the sliced thin beef paired really well with the tofu in the niku tofu. Both dishes came piping hot, and were very comforting, like home-cooked food. The shishito peppers came with a lot of bonito flakes; they're charred very well and not spicy at all. Wings well nicely grilled, too. The seafood okonomiyaki was not bad. It's a bit softer than I expected, but had quite a lot of seafood. The large Deluxe Meshi was pretty big. It came in a hot stone pot with a generous amount of salmon, eel, flying fish roe and a poached egg. I loved how crispy the rice around the pot was. No wonder it's their most popular dish. If you like authentic Japanese food, I would highly recommend this place.

We discovered Gombei while in San Jose for a conference and wanted legit Japanese, not things near the hotel. And very glad we found this small restaurant. And it's as authentic as you'd expect. Family owned, the staff was friendly and helpful, and clearly popular with local people...everyone in there were regulars that knew the owners! Food was delicious and fresh, simple and very much like comfort food. I got their special, with grilled mackerel & salmon. Very tasty, though the salmon was more well done than I liked. My husband had the katsu curry which was delicious. The gyoza was also great and nicely pan fried. We loved the family atmosphere, and how comfortable it felt. Paid street parking is fairly easy to find, and there was thankfully not a long wait on weekend afternoons. I stopped by for a teriyaki chicken and tempura plate, which also came with salad, rice, miso soup, and potato croquettes. I started the meal with the miso soup, which was indeed fairly salty. The teriyaki chicken and rice though - ooh this slapped! The potato croquettes were also fluffy and delicious, although it was a tad difficult to eat since it was fairly large. (Half thickness sized portions would be preferred if possible.) The shrimp and imitation crab tempura were a good break form the chicken, and they were both tasty. For a full Japanese experience, the dining room here is indeed a little on the tighter side, which really fits the theme. Service was efficient, though note that there's a small surcharge with credit card. 8/10, would come again!
