Onoooooooooo still is my favorite Hawaiian bbq place around the area. Definitely beats that other place with the dried out meat. We definitely take advantage of their mailer and online coupon offers. Our go-to is the chicken katsu with Mac salad and rice. They have changed their salad recently which is a good thing. Their old salad was a bit bland. We received a coupon from Ono Hawaiian BBQ for a BOGO Aloha Plate promotion, so we were excited to give it a try. There are several Aloha Plates to choose from, although many of the options require a small upcharge. You can choose either a 1-item or 2-item plate, and we went with the BOGO 2-item plates. For our first plate, we ordered the Chicken Katsu (no additional charge) and the Crispy Shrimp (an extra $0.50). For the second plate, we got another Chicken Katsu with the Beef (also an extra $0.50). One thing I really liked is the self-serve sauce station. They have katsu sauce that you can pump into small containers, along with teriyaki sauce and several additional sauce packets, so it's easy to customize your meal. The Chicken Katsu was crispy and tasty, but the Crispy Shrimp only came with three pieces, and the beef was just okay. The portions are also a bit smaller compared to Olioli Hawaiian BBQ, although the prices are noticeably lower. My biggest disappointment was that the plates come with a green salad instead of macaroni salad. For me, macaroni salad is part of what makes a Hawaiian plate feel complete, so I really wish that were included instead. Overall, it's a good value, especially if you have one of their coupons. I still prefer Olioli Hawaiian BBQ for the larger portions and more traditional Hawaiian plate experience, but Ono Hawaiian BBQ is definitely worth trying when there's a BOGO deal. read more

IMHO We arrived shortly before 11:30 in hopes of beating the lunch crowd. We ordered two plate entrees to-go; the Korean Beef Short Ribs, and the BBQ Mixed Plate. Each plate comes with two scoops of rice and one scoop of mac salad. I asked if my entree could have it in reverse; one scoop of rice and two scoops of mac salad, and they happily complied! We waited maybe 10 minutes for our food, which was negligible. While we waited, we watched the lunch order line grow, which was a good sign. Don't forget to grab container cups of the teriyaki or katsu sauces! The food portion was generous as I would expect, filled with a nice layer of steamed cabbage/broccoli on the bottom, and topped with the protein choices. The Kalbi was tasty, tender and easy to cut. I really like this place. My husband got the BBQ mix plate and was a big fan of the beef short rib. The meat was incredibly tender and was nicely sweet & salty. I ordered the mini chicken plate without the mac salad, and it was fantastic. The chicken was well seasoned and juicy and hot. Each bite was flavorful and satisfying. We also tried the spam musubi, which had a perfect ratio of rice to savory spam. The spam was nicely caramelized, giving it a slightly sweet and salty flavor that paired well with the soft rice. Where Ono lacks a little bit in flavor, I feel like it makes up with consistency. They're always super reliable. Their meats from the chicken to the ribs to the beef is always cooked like pretty on the dot. So I'm never disappointed when I have Ono's. I do like Olilo's on Hostetter a lot more because of the flavors but Ono's is a super super reliable everywhere we go. Tried this place for the first time and i was extremely disappointed. The spam musubi were small and the seaweed was so chewy and hard to rip off when taking a bite. The tase was just alright but the seaweed completely ruined it. Then i tried the chicken katsu it was extremely dry. Maybe if i douse it in katsu sauce it might make it better but nooooo they didn't even give me katsu sauce.... I had no idea they had fresh young coconut and I bought one as takeout before I realized I would literally have to carry it in a bag as I drive! Lol The young coconut was delicious and fresh, and I was able to scrape out all the coconut meat at my house! I got the chicken combo for my friend and she loved every bite of it and she's a picky foodie let me tell you!! She ate it over two days and she was really surprised that the flavor stayed as she reheated it on the stove top the second day! After relocating to DTSJ, I am so glad there is a Ono Hawaiian BBQ nearby! I definitely prefer Ono's over L&L's because of the quality and flavor. I got the bbq katsu mix and a side of crispy shrimps. The bbq katsu mix is bbq chicken, bbq beef, and chicken katsu. Also, I was able to customize the meal; I did 1 scoop rice and a double scoop of Mac salad. Plus they did give a good amount of steamed cabbage. I was surprised that the side of crispy shrimps were good; it was lightly battered plus these shrimps were pretty large in size. This is my local Hawaiian restaurant and they do it well. Being from the Bay area, I've been blessed/spoiled with not only having Hawaiian neighbors, but access to a half dozen Hawaiian restaurants. The fast-casual nature of Ono means no long waits with friendly staff and cooks spending a lot of time catch-up and chatting with friends instead of cooking. A call ahead for pick-up or strolling in and ordering at the cashier means food will come out in under 10 min. A very fast way to judge Hawaiian food is in 3 dishes, the short ribs (better be juicy and tender), the Kalua pork (better be flavorful and not dry) and the mac salad (flexibility here, but it better be tasty)! With options like two protein platters and side orders, you can stack up your favorites or sample something different. I went with my 3 staples (as well as tried the spicy chicken) and everything was spot on. Dinged a star for portion size (generosity seems to be taking a back seat to inflation). The spicy chicken doesn't stand out to the work horses of ribs and pigs, but was tender and tasty. Came in here on a Monday afternoon and it was not busy at all so service was relatively quick. I wanted to try the kalua pork for the first time since I have not had it yet. What I thought was nice about the service was that you can actually swap your rice for more macaroni salad or with vegetables at no extra cost. I decided to just get their macaroni salad because of how delicious I remember it to be. The pork was really salty though and the pork did not seem like it was tender enough for me. It was rough but at the same time was able to rip apart which didn't make sense for me. If I were to come here again, I would not get the Kaula pork though. Let's begin with a little bit of disclosure. I ended up trying this restaurant because of a number of coupons I received in the mail. From the start, the address of this place on their website is incorrect. If you followed that address, you would end up in the middle of a rental community. The address listed here is correct. Anyways, I drove in to order some take-out and use the coupon I had. I ordered the number 5 and number 42. The number 5 can be described as their seafood plate which consists to two pieces of grilled chicken, two pieces of breaded white fish, and three breaded jumbo prawns. Also included are two scoops of rice, cabbage/broccoli veggie and some mac and cheese. The number 42 is made up of grilled beef and chicken with the same included items listed above. Yes, they are pretty large meals and could feed a person over two meals (depending on how hungry one is). Before I made my order, the guy in front of me asked to put the mac and cheese in a separate container. I asked for the same and it is a good idea. After driving home, I decided to try out the seafood plate and save the grill plate for the next day. All I can say is that the seafood items are very nicely done and tasty. The breading is almost perfectly salted and I could not stop myself from eating it all (well almost). After eating half of the plate (and enjoying some grapes I had in the fridge) it was a pretty fulfilling meal. There were a couple of problems that I noticed when eating my leftovers the next day. When the grill meats cool down, they lose their taste. I realised that they weren't salted or peppered very much or at all. As a solution, I had some homemade teriyaki sauce and poured some over the grill meats as I reheated them in a frying pan on low heat. It definitely raised the yum factor. Secondly, I noticed a slight bitter aftertaste to the veggies which I had tasted before at one or two other restaurants. My guess is that the veggies weren't washed properly (when I cook I wash my veggies at least 3 times and have never had this bitter after taste... ever). Bottom line is the food is good and though service is a little slow (they cook to order), I will stick to the number 5 plate. read more

Ok it's a chain. But it is a chain that offers some serious comfort food for me. I'll take a Hawaiian plate lunch over any mainland fastfood options any day of da week bruddah. I don't think I've ever tried this particular chain, but I think Imma fan it. I like it much better than L & L. Spam Musubi ($7ish/3*) They cook theirs to order, which you might think is appropriate but I'm very traditionalist when it comes to this dish. You see when a place cooks it to order, then they'll fry up the spam right when you order it, then proceed to wrap it in the nori and rice. So, the spam is piping hot and just steams in that musubi packaging. This invention is meant to be really at room temp, wrapped and meant to grab and go and eat on the run. Shoot, in Hawaii, I'll pick some up at a convenience store where it is sitting on a counter ready to grab. I'll throw some in a backpack (not even a cooler) and go conquer my day ie hiking, snorkeling or just laying on a beach. I'll open it up hours later and just munch on that spam, rice, nori perfection. So to eat this version crazy hot was not my ideal version. I actually saved the other one to eat down the road, and it was just okay. I think their proportion to rice to spam is a bit heavy on the rice. It's an art figuring what that is. BBQ Chicken/Beef Combo ($15ish/4*) Solid plate lunch. Mac salad perfectly basic. I used to wonder why places didn't add more ingredients or flavor to it...until I visited Hawaii. Now I love it plain and smooth to go with all them flavorful meats. Love their bbq meats, always cooked to order and nice and juicy, especially the chicken in which they use boneless thighs. The marinade absorbs well into the meat, and when griddled on that flat top grill, just caramelizes beautifully. And it isn't that overly thick teriyaki type sauce, nothing gloopy will coat the meat. The meat is flavored from the inside-out. I did like the chicken a lot more than the beef as it was just juicier and meatier bites. The beef is sliced super thin and just reminded me of bulgogi. And what separates this place from the others is that they add sauted cabbage and broccoli to the mix. Right on top of the white rice and below the meats of choice. So as you open the box, you can't even see it underneath all that meat. But I think it balances the plate nicely, otherwise it is just a carb and meat fest. I applaud this addition to the fullest. Seafood Mix ($18ish/4*) I was hAngry after work one day and wanted something big. Now it is still still 2 full meals for me which makes it a pretty sweet deal. But here you get 3 different meats, which makes it feel like a Hawaiian buffet. Along with bbq chicken that I already described it also came with panko fried shrimp which was just meh. Frozen product and tasted the breading more than the shrimp. I would skip this next time. But the fried fish was awesome. They don't specify what type of fish, menu just says 'Hawaiian White fish". I usually want to know, but I didn't ask as the counter people are basically teenagers who probably don't want to get badgered. But boy was it great, very thick slices, nice and flaky and quite juicy and silky. And this was fried in a batter that wasn't overly done, just a hint of crispness to compliment all that luscious fish. So next time I'll just get the fish and chicken combo. I actually can't wait for another visit, and I can't say that about most chains. The service was quite slow and I got the impression that the employees don't really care about their work and the environment in general. The food is consistently good, and the portions are decent compared to how much other places cost these days. Unfortunately, the service is pretty poor. I always go right when they open, so I'm usually order number one. The kitchen staff are fast. Front of the house, not so much. I'll usually stand there for several minutes watching my food sitting in the window while the young people are talking to each other or are on their phones. I've had Hawaiian BBQ before and that was much better than what I had today. I ordered the chicken combo--BBQ chicken and chicken Katsu served with two scoops of white rice, macaroni salad, and what tasted like blanched cabbage and broccoli. The chicken Katsu was thin and I mostly tasted the fried batter; the BBQ chicken thighs lacked flavor, and the veggies had absolutely no taste and was water-logged.
