I was across the street at the Hammer Theatre for a conference and they offered a discount at various restaurants in the area, including Spoonfish. Since poke is one of my favorite foods, this was great news! I got the California Coast bowl in a large size, which includes four different kinds of protein and lots of of other goodies! I recommend getting the half spring mix and half white rice. They have a beverage case with drink options near the cash register - sparkling water, cold teas, etc. The food was solid and I liked that their soy sauce packets are from San Jose!! Staff was very nice and they gave me more seaweed salad when I requested extra. It's not huge inside but they have outdoor seating; just a heads up that only one table is in the shady area. I decided to get some poke, and this spot is close by, so some friends and I go. The shop is small with barely any seating, but there are 4 tables outside. The fish was fresh, and the number of choices for toppings was great. The process to build the bowl is fast, and the service was kind. They even gave me a bit extra on one of my toppings without charging me. All in all it was a large portion for the large bowl with 4 different proteins and lots of toppings. I love spoonfish poke!! This is one of my favorite poke spots in the bay. They're definitely not stingy with the fish and their ingredients are super fresh. I usually get a regular bowl with white rice; 2 scoops of salmon, 1 scoop of albacore; edamame, masago, seaweed salad (extra $1.75) and all the dry toppings except for the chips, I get the spicy aoili and the ponzu sauce. Today the bowl was really salty, a little saltier than normally but it was still really good. I'm sad that they didn't have the miso soup today because I like washing down my raw fish! read more

Accommodating for food allergies and health conditions, friendly and quick service, fresh and delicious food, and generous portions. Just one request, can you please bring back your Miso sauce? It was so delicious and the only sauce I have found ever at a restaurant that I am not allergic to. I miss it so much! I always have a pleasant experience here and buy poke to go here frequently. One of the only poke places left that still offer a generous portion for the price - lots of other places in the bay have been steadily increasing prices while reducing the amount of poke they give you. I always order a regular bowl (3 proteins). The small bowl can be too small at times (2 proteins) and may not leave you completely full. They offer many unmarinated fish options, which is safe for me because I am allergic to many seasonings and sauces. I order the albacore, ahi tuna, and salmon (these are some of their unmarinated options that come without spicy sauce). I cannot eat many of the toppings because I have a lot of food allergies to either the topping or ingredients/preservatives that may have been processed in the same facility as the toppings, so I asked the cashier if he can please give me extra pickled ginger, the only equal price topping I can eat. He said of course and even offered to put it in a separate bowl. He asked me also if I wanted even more. As you can see in my bowl below, about a third of my bowl is pickled ginger (their pickled ginger is a bit on the strong side, FYI but still so delicious!). I look forward to Spoonfish Poke because it had the only sauce I have found at a restaurant ever that I could eat; their Miso sauce. The reason why I ate it was because it was a sauce that did not give me allergic reactions, because it seemed to be very authentic and not mixed with a lot of preservatives or other types of dressings and sauces. It's one of their blander sauces, but it's good for sensitive people with health conditions. It seems they ran out of that sauce (and a lot of other sauces) for a while, because they covered all the signs that had it with a piece of paper. I don't know if they will restock it soon. Spoonfish is one of my favorite poke places, and keep in mind that I eat a lot of poke because it is a safe build-your-own-bowl type of restaurant that is good for people with multiple allergies or a health condition. Most of the food I get here is tasty, though nothing special (I'm not really picky when it comes to poke), and there is some indoor and outdoor seating you can use. The only thing that would probably stop me from returning is the raise in price, as the small bowl is now almost worth as much as a regular bowl used to be. Not a bad poke joint (I've only been to this location twice but u can't get it cheaper on campus at Ginger Market) and I had a few bites in it but it is so unfortunate how expensive it is and how little the portion of fish u get. I know rent is high in San Jose and I can get this $12-15 farther from downtown. Worker skimped on the fish when i asked for more salmon and tuna. This bowl was $22 and I didn't add any avocado. But for this price the bowl should be packed to the rim and should be a dome lid, not a flat lid so u can stuff the bowl. read more

The customer service is great here. The guy that helped me was very friendly and pointed at all of their signs so I clearly understood their options. He was quick and efficient, so I was in and out just in time for my classes. This is a review for order - pick up, but will probably be our last time here. I travel through this area a lot and our usual favorite place is Poke House when we crave for some fresh fish. However I'm staying close by here this time and thought why not give this place a try. After seeing the recent reviews I was hesitant, but giving them the benefit of a doubt, bad day or just some mishaps. However this visit definitely gave truth to those reviews, so whoever decides to order for pick up - be wary and double check your orders. We arrived and was greeted by the employees as they were finishing up an order - nice and friendly. But the food not so much. We ordered two large build your own poke. And the two bowls could not be anymore drastic in their portion sizes. My boyfriend ordered the brown rice and I had the mix of rice and greens. My bowl had more to it but sadly and obviously had missing items. My bowl not only did not have the jalapeños or edamames, but it lacked the sauce flavor, which was WASABI AOLI. No kick no flavor. My boyfriend was so disappointed to the portion size as it was soooo inconsistent and the brown rice was like 1/4th of the bowl. Both bowls only had a few bites of each fish... essentially it was like eating crab salad.. which was dry and lacked flavor. We are definitely sad and disappointed because it could have had potential but we most likely will never order for pick up from here again and will stick to our poke house. read more

I was so excited when I saw a poke place would be opening up on the paseo. I walked it every day to and from class, and I knew that if the new place was good, I'd be spending a lot of money on this strip in my final semesters (Gong Cha and Philz are across the walk, and my hair salon is a couple doors down). The first time I came here was within the first week they opened. I was so hungry that I forgot to take a picture of my food. It's a bummer, because I really enjoyed my food that time. The mango was cold and refreshing, and the fish tasted fresh. We got an extra scoop of fish at no charge because it was their grand opening. However, I did notice that they didn't have many protein options, the toppings were pretty basic, and the prices were average, with seaweed and avocado costing extra. The second time I came here was in March, and I brought a friend who had never tried poke before. I thought this place was good enough to take a poke noob to, but this visit left a lot to be desired (and now my friend thinks poke is gross). On this visit, the fish smelled horrible, and its sliminess was still apparent through the heaping of sauce the employee put in my bowl. No person enjoys eating lumps of stinky fish, smothered in spicy mayo. Luckily my friend didn't order any of the sauce (for health reasons), but unfortunately for him the fish taste was more potent. Everything else about the place was the same, ie, average prices, basic toppings, still a lack of protein options. For a place that gets a lot of foot traffic and that had been open for quite a few months between my visits, I was pretty disappointed to experience poorly handled raw seafood, and to see that they hadn't taken steps to improve their offerings. Between crazy stay at home orders/protocols, maniac life/work/school/online etc schedules, I wound up here one day for lunch. DAMMIT. lol. I have had crazy seafood cravings for 2- 3 months and gave spoonfish a shot. The menu and options here are pretty liberal so I don't think anyone will have a dirty ditty about a bowl. I opted for a custom bowl because I wanted something somewhat lighter on a really HOT day. For a regular bowl you get 3 proteins, 1 is a base, large is 4 protein, 1 is a base. I got a brown rice base, ahi tuna and tofu as a 3 p bowl setup. I added cucumbers, spoonfish sauce, edamame, ginger/wasabi and sesame seed topping. Overall I felt that most of the ingredients were served on the hotter side, I felt like the hotness from outside lowered the temperature of the food. It just didn't live up to my expectations. I don't do seafood that much, so with a slightly higher price and my high expectations, I need to try this place again like 2 more times because I also don't want ice in my food either. Overall my experience was user friendly, straightforward and will try this place out again soon with a different custom bowl. No worries with such a central and convenient local! 5/9/20 I've been less than impressed with how our local restaurants have responded to the #Covid19 #CoronaVirus crisis. I know everyone wants to look out for the small guy--it's human nature to want to help. And though we all would like to think that everyone works hard and is brilliant at what they do, I think we can all see by now... no, restaurants are just like us. Some work hard. Some are smart. But very few both work hard and work smart. And the average restaurant is... still average. And many have always sucked, and will always suck. But Covid-19 has shown us a new side of the business--Entitlement... I've seen several reviews from friends stating that they "refuse to give anything but a 5 star review during these times, BUT... today's food was bad" (but they still gave 5 stars.) Really? Like, REALLY? I gave a bad review to a hot dog business recently, 1 star cause they misleadingly described their items on the menu, charging too much $$$ for what you get, and their food wasn't all that, then the owner responds admonishing me for giving them bad marks "during these times." Enough is enough. I give scores based on what I believe to be fair, with allowances given that often the food is delivered, and thus is not as fresh as eating there. But a 3-star rating always means "average" (compared to peers) with me, and 1 = worst, 5 = best of peers. It's that simple. Well, today we had California-style poke (as opposed to real poke) delivered by #DoorDash and I gotta say, compared to all the other Covid-19 dash's we've had in this price range ($15 / person) it was pretty good! No, it wasn't the best poke we've had. In fact, at best it was average for quality. The pieces were small, and I HIGHLY advise you to avoid the albacore tuna as they WAAAAAAAYYYY over marinated to the degree that it no longer tasted like fish. But you know, to me other than having decently fresh fish, the 2nd most important thing is good rice, and hey, their rice was perfect. Not mushy, not hard, just right. Good stuff. It was a solid bowl of poke. So, a Regular Bowl = $13.99. It didn't look that big, but by the end of it I was stuffed. I would say compared to others, their ratio of fish : other stuff is about average, not great... okay yeah, to be honest was not good. Half of the bowl was 2 types of shredded imitation crab. But.. yeah... I'll be nice for this once. And again, the fish quality was just average too (other than the albacore which they shouldn't be allowed to sell.) This place piqued my interest since it was near SJSU's campus and I had WEEK-LONG craving for poke. After a long struggle, I finally gave into my cravings and decided to check this place out. I ordered a regular bowl with a scoop of spicy tuna, two scoops of salmon, their togarashi and signature sauce, with a few other toppings. Compared to other poke places I've tried, their servings are not as large. They do not offer as many mix-ins, like pickled onion and mango, but, they do have what I would call "main mix-ins," such as edamame, cucumber, and onion. They also have a good variety of toppings, such as the common furikake, sesame seeds, and also some fried items, like jalapeno potato chips and fried onion. I'm also a huge fan of crab salad, but theirs wasn't that great. The imitation crab meat tasted cheap and unimpressive, but I really like their sauces. They were very flavorful and tasty.
