I have been going to hawkscay since 1998, my first room was the penthouse suite in 1998. it was a gem in the keys that we found. Primarily for the kids, can't beat this place for kids, of all ages. I just took the grandkids on this latest trip and regretted it. so let's begin Check in is a 4pm, but since 1998, always checked in early, however, NOW the check in clerk said "IT BEGINS AT 4pm" and we are short staffed ( the all too familiar covid19 excuse to squeeze more money out of people) , so after driving 5 hours, and standing in line for 20-25 mins, I find out that its not ready. ( this is 530pm now), now remember their hotel rates have doubled, and their excuse is, we can't find staff....I guarantee they didn't not double their staffs pay rate. If fact their pay is so poor they are busing in people from Miami every day to do work, must be much cheaper than paying a good wage and having happy guest spending more money....I digress... So after complaining enough I get a room, and sent across the resort to our room, supposed to be a villa but turns out to be an old condo. at this point with 2 tired kids we will take anything. We run up to the room, a foyer cover in trash and tried to open the door, the electronic key doesn't work.....grrrrr, tried all our keys and I drove back to the checking and said please fix the keys, the desk clerk ran the keys through the machine and said there are just fine, I will send maintenance over to fix the lock. Drove back to the hotel room, waiting for maintenance, bored we tried the keys again and magic, they now worked.....maintenance never showed up.....and physical lock is broken, have to slam the door to get it to close.... so in the room, the air conditioning had a bad bearing and the whole three bed room villa is rumbling like a freight train...I set up my laptop since I planned on working there remote the whole week while the rest of the family was going to enjoy the resort and spend my money...or so we thought. WIFI didn't work, connect and kicked off after 5 mins, needed the internet enhanced service that you get nickel and dimed to death for but I was happy to pay since I needed high speed internet to work. called front desk, said someone would come by in the morning....or so we thought.... Tried to order a quick bite to eat by the main pool since our dinner reservation was a few hours later...., but tiki pool bar said it's a limited menu and to get what you wanted, walk to angler and ale......what service...... finally headed to dinner and walked to angler and ale, our favorite place to eat, outside was all closed for some reason, and then checking in, the place was half empty and people sitting there are tables all very unhappy....not a good sign but we are starving and the kid are cranky. we get seat, which was weird since we had to wait 2 hours for reservation and couldn't figure out why since it was mostly empty....turns out there is no wait staff, people sat around trying order and get food for a very long time. the poor wait staff that did show up have to be thanked, they worked their tail off but couldn't handle the people. food was great as usual but the wait was not acceptable. Trying to be cheap shows very quickly and usually puts you out of business. The resort went in a bad way before changing owners and the new owners spent a lot on much needed renovation but the feeling around the resort is like the old owners, tired and just wanting to get out... After dinner it was time to sleep, however the AC was so loud, no one slept except for the 4 months old and 2 year old (turns out there was a known maintenance request for this room and the parts had been on order for some time but yet still issued a key for the room.....) The next morning we groggily woke up. The smell of sweaty old unwashed people filled my night....the mattress or mattress cover and not been clean in some time, the sheets were questionable........ I walked around the resort looking for coffee, nothing was open, the market place had now moved, and its new location was a disaster ( place to get coffee and food), looked like they were too cheap to get a storage unit and decided to put uncle's 7-11 in the old restaurant where you had breakfast. ......supposed to be open at 7am and knocking on the door until they got annoyed they let us in at 730 with the rest of the angry off people.. As for breakfast, you could get sloppy eggs and sausage for 25 bucks a person if you wanted to in the prime restaurant..... the old buffet is a thing of the past...covid must have killed all the good food........ Walking around the resort all hot tubs are closed they said "DUE TO COVID"...really.....no other resort is....no mandate besides saving labor become apparent.... Not good but not awful. We travel a lot to Hawaii and the Caribbean, but this was our first visit to the Keys. Most of the staff were very nice but they are clearly very understaffed. The waiters were constantly running around flustered. The wait times were almost unbearable even though we were relaxed and not in a hurry. Check-in was smooth but a little funny in that we didn't get a welcome briefing on the amenities as with most resorts. Our room was nice except that the air conditioner roared like a jet engine with a broken turbine blade). The Sunset cruise was nice but full. The staff on the boat were very nice and quick to attend the needs of the cruisers. Angler and Ale restaurant was tasty but the waiter was clearly inexperienced. He never asked us if we would like our drinks refilled. He was a little awkward describing the menu. The other restaurant, 61 Prime, was booked solid for three weeks. Every night we saw several open tables so they must have had a lot of cancellations or they were to understaffed to handle full capacity. The pools were at full capacity. The family pool was so crowded it was so cloudy you couldn't see the bottom. That might be a little dangerous with all the kiddos in the pool. The adult pool was clear. Overall I would not recommend Hawks Cay. Seems like it is overpriced ($750 per night including taxes and "resort fee") for what you get: basically a hotel room. We were there to attend a conference The restaurants are expensive and food is so so at best The rooms are cleaned every other day, even though you pay $400-$500 /night The WiFi speed was 4.9 Mbps on download and .8Mbps on upload There are no microwave in the room, and they will not warm your food or baby's milk The walls between the rooms are paper thin, so you can hear TV, people talking in next room The swimming pools, tennis courts, and fitness center all close at sunset read more

Hawks Cay was amazingly beautiful! Junior from Jamaica checked us in. He was amazingly kind, knowledgeable and helpful. The valets and people who assisted us to the room went above and beyond. The facilities were pristine. All in all we enjoyed our time and if we had kids would return. Three complaints. The food was average at best. Everything was well done and over seasoned. We ate 4 meals there, all were terrible. The pool bars staff did not seem to care about the guests. They stood around and socialized with each other. And, this last thing is silly.... but we called and asked for 2 glasses. Any kind of glass to be used in our room for drinks. They refused and gave us styrofoam coffee cups. (Rumor is someone was hurt in previous weeks when glass was broken in the pool.) Either way, we were requesting for our room and if it was a problem, they should have said something. read more

This is the first time I have ever reviewed a hotel before I have even finished my stay. And first off let me say I understand it is difficult with the current virus situation but this place is one big false advertisement, understaffed, over priced for what they are currently offering and overall hugely disappointing. The website clearly states that all food and bar outlets are open. They are not. 3 of the 8 are open, one of which is only a bar that serves limited watered down drinks. Our stay started by walking out to see the pool after almost a 45 min check in process. We ordered two piña coladas. The bartender then glanced at the watered down left over drink that was already sitting in the blender and she just added more ice to that. Tasted like flavored water. Two watered down drinks----$36. So we brought them back to the bar and asked for new drinks. The other bartender then informed us that the piña colada machine hadn't been working. Then why did you just serve them to us?? The pool area itself was nice but not very clean. Room service being one of the 8 outlets that is not available but the website says it is available. Not true again. I'm guessing in normal circumstances this could be a very nice place. But you can't charge full overpriced rates for 30% of a product and expect people to be happy. I've since gone down to the front desk and asked what is actually open here, where I was told about only the 3 outlets. I then told her that the website says everything is open and she says that it was not the case. She was completely unaware what the website said. On top of all this, they don't answer the phone but instead ask you to email and someone will get right back to you. Well it's been a day and no one has responded. Do yourself a favor and don't book here until they are back to 100% availability. Maybe then you could actually get your moneys worth because right now I feel taken advantage of. Very outdated resort. No room service and restaurants that were in the resorts closed early. The food was pricey and not very good. The staff was great. Valet guys were awesome! Drinks at pool bar were horrible and very expensive. I don't mind paying for a good drink. But these bartenders didn't know how to make a drink. Pools closed early as well. Pillows were very uncomfortable but the beds were nice. TVs were definitely out dated. Direct tv cable??? Needs to be updated to smart tvs for people to have more options. It was ok. This was my first time here and I was expecting more. Expect long waits when you check in. I booked my stay 4 weeks ago. It said check in was at 4 pm. We arrived around 3 pm and checked in. It was 2 hours before we got into our room. The two girls at the desk didn't seem to know what they were doing most of the time and weren't especially friendly. On hotels.com, the resort view room shows a view of the pool and lagoon. Nope - we got a tree and the parking lot. Also note that you'll be charged +/- $200 per day for resort fees. If you don't use it on drinks, whatever, it will be given back to you. What is the point of that? Actually, the hotel probably loses money because it's pre-charging. People are more aware of what they are spending during their stay because they want the money back. The rooms were fine. I didn't get the issues other people mention on here. The only issue I had were people being loud in the hallways in the middle of the night. The lagoon and pool are beautiful - we didn't have any issues with that. We will attempt to play tennis or go to the arcade - we'll see how that goes. The only place to get breakfast - the market - has ridiculous prices. I saw $10 on a pack of chips. Finally, expect to pay for Wifi because the free one doesn't work. At almost $300 per night, you'd expect at least good free Wifi. Even cheap hotels have that. I wanted to write a great review but come on, Hawk's Cay, get your stuff together. You can't charge that much and have such a so-so experience. You can't blame the pandemic for the things I just mentioned. read more

The only good thing about this resort is the location & the food. The service here was so absolutely horrible I'd trust the workers at a Wendy's to create a more relaxing environment. They almost immediately lost my clothes when we arrived, we were chased out of the Angler & Ale by our server asking for a bigger tip even though he was late with everything we asked for, and the rooms themselves aren't much better then what you'd find at a nearby motel. My husband and I stayed at Hawks Cay last week for our "mini-moon". We were so excited for all the amenities, bars, restaurants, activities, etc. Hawks Cay had to offer. The check in process was very long - I waited in line approximately 15-20 minutes, and once I got to the front desk, I was informed I was early and our room was not ready yet. (It was 3:55pm and check-in is at 4pm). The woman at the front desk informed me she would give me a call once our room was ready. I went to let my husband know who was waiting in our rental car with our luggage. At 4:20pm I still haven't received a call, so my husband goes in to check. He was informed it wasn't, and after he complained they found a room for us. We got to the room and noticed the back door didn't lock, which is an issue because we had a lanai room looking over the adult pool. We wanted to explore anyway so we went back up to the front desk to let them know. While maintenance was fixing our lock we went up to the adult pool bar for a drink to find it was closed. The bartender behind the bar informed us it closes at 5pm. Odd, but no big deal. We went to the tiki bar by the main pool to be informed they were out of the drinks we wanted. We finally got two very overpriced mediocre drinks. We tried both angler and ale and sixty one prime during our stay. Outside of the bartender at angler and ale, we found the service to be horrible. The waitstaff were slow and rude. The menu at angler and ale was limited, again, very overpriced for the quality of food. Sixty one prime was worse. Our waitress barely acknowledged us and acted as if we were bothering her any time we asked a question. The food was at best mediocre and very expensive. We ate off the resort for the rest of the trip, and had wonderful dining experiences in Marathon and Islamorada with great food and friendly waitstaff. Like the bars, the pools also closed very early. The planned events weren't as described and often ended early, which was disappointing. At one point I needed a wine opener. I was informed to check the gift shop, who then informed me to check the marketplace. After waiting approximately 10 minutes, I was finally greeted by the staff at the marketplace who then directed me if they had a wine opener it would be "somewhere over there". I couldn't find one and wasn't getting any help, so ended up driving 20 minutes away to Marathon to buy one. One thing they don't tell you until you check in is they've suspended housekeeping during your stay due to Covid. One of the primary reasons we chose Hawks Cay was so we didn't have to leave the resort. Ironically, I don't think either of us have ever spent so much time driving on a vacation. Our room essentially served as a "crash pad" as we were constantly driving to either Marathon or Islamorada. The resort is fairly expensive to stay (much less eat and drink), which was very disappointing for our below average experience. There seemed to be no concern from Hawks Cay regarding their lack in service delivery and poor customer experience. The resort is on a beautiful piece of property and could have great potential with some extra attention to detail, updating, and a MAJOR revamp in their operations and service. read more

I am staying at Hawks cay, the grounds and lagoon are beautiful but the people and managers are not cooperative and they are nasty. They made me starve one night and I'm staying in a suite. Furthermore, I met with the managers Christopher Dorsey and Tara VanHoesen and although they gave me an extra night for free they were mean and nasty and they threatened me and told me they called the sheriff on me because I called room service too many times. Do not stay here they have the worst service here ever and they are all mean and nasty. Only good part is the weather, the staff is awful and unacommadating. Do not stay here, I am never coming back here ever again! Great value, great service, great location! My husband and I visited shortly before the hurricane. The staff was very very friendly and helpful. I would rate this is a three star hotel but a definite three star. There are many opportunities for excursions. We took a catamaran sunset cruise from the resort that was wonderful our captains made it extra fun by letting us take turns driving the catamaran. My husband left the gym. Not too much sand here if that's what you're looking for it's more of a pool place. We had an excellent view of the ocean from our room. The view of the sunset from our room was fantastic. read more

Great hotel, however, the pool chairs were filled with bird poop (didn't look like they were ever cleaned off) and the poolside tables were dirty. This was at 9 am. Otherwise, great experience. Rooms were very clean, property is gorgeous. Breakfast sandwiches delicious, but very overpriced. The restaurant in the lobby is wide open, making the lobby overcome with a very fish like smell. Poolside service nonexistent unless you ask for it. Bar was to open at 11 am... 11 15 AM we had to ask for a bartender to help us. Once they finally arrived, they were not friendly. Jason at the Adult Only pool though was very friendly. Singer at night sang same song 2 nights in a row. Needs more popular and upbeat songs. This resort is near my brothers compound in Duck Key. It has (had) a beautiful area in the middle around the pool area with a restaurant included. I was interested in the condos they have for sale and I was not impressed at all, I was thinking it would be nice to have a place around the corner from my brothers compound. I'm certainly happy I didn't like them, because I would have purchased one, and according to my brother the place is destroyed as much of the Keys are...it's very sad all in all. read more

Marketed as a premium or luxury resort, but it's very far from it, despite the elevated price point. My husband and I came as kids and we were excited to bring our kids. Huge disappointment. Our room was late upon check in, and then they never bothered to call us when it was ready. I had to keep checking. Not very family friendly.... Umbrellas and shade are hard to come by and the cabanas are only available in the 21+ area. Not good for small babies at all. The "lagoon" is actually very small, water sports are constantly booked and don't open until late in the day, and after my seven year old waited over an hour for her spot- the staff didn't write her down (so they claim) and they shunned her away for another two hours as opposed to trying to accommodate since it was their mistake. The pool wait staff is few and far between, we had to ask for our server several times. The marketplace is also very understaffed and very slow. Getting a coffee takes forever. The rooms are very old and very very small. No furniture to unpack, the beds don't even look like queen beds, and we requested a crib when we booked months ago- but upon arrival, we were told we would need to rent one from a third party. Good thing we just brought out bassinet bc a pack n play wouldn't have fit anyway. Tons of things were broken in the villa, the showers hardly fit an adult, there's zero counter space, and the bedroom tv didnt work. The drinks are weak, despite costing over $20 a piece. The pool is also very small for the amount of people they have staying here- it feels like a cruise ship. Save your money, go somewhere else. There's ton of options in the keys, including tons of new construction or renovated properties. This place was great 30 years ago, not anymore. We won't be back. read more

Girls weekend at Hawks Cay located at Duck Key close to Key West. The drive was about 2 hours coming from Kendall. Leaving early is a must because traffic can be busy on weekends. Once you arrive valet already has your information and are ready to take your luggage and park your car while you checking in. Even though our room was not ready you still have access to all the amenities at the hotel. That includes 5 pools, beach access, paddleboarding, fishing and yoga for $15 per person. Once we received a text our room was ready we came to the front and pleasantly our room was upgraded to pool access. I was sooo excited! Our room was beautiful and very clean. We loved the adult pool! The main pool was very noisy and full of children and I wasn't about that life this weekend lol!! They have plenty of restaurants in the hotel but close early. While relaxing poolside they pass cold towels and fresh fruit. My entire weekend was a blessing. Will definitely come back for another visit. read more

Pros: 1) Water views and landscaping are gorgeous. 2) Most of the staff is very friendly. A few in particular: Denisa at Sixty One Prime, Tony who serves food and beverage at the pool, and Terry who bartends at Sixty One Prime. They are awesome. 3) Sixty One Prime has good food for dinner. Very limited menu but still good. Cons: 1) The breakfast buffet at Sixty One Prime is blah. I am never a fan of a buffet anyway. It has the basics but I would prefer an a la carte menu with nicer options. 2) The carpet down the hallway to our room is absolutely disgusting. 3) There is no housekeeping unless you ask for it daily with 24 hours notice. You can't just ask for it for the duration of your stay at check-in like you can at every other hotel we've stayed in over the past 18 months. 3) No room service available. This was a huge disappointment. 4) We feel lied to about a couple of things. a) The hours of operation for Oasis are supposed to be until 10pm Fri & Sat according to the flyer of QR codes with hours we received at check-in. It wasn't open either of those evenings. b) When we booked we called and asked if room service was available because we usually like to order breakfast and a pot of coffee. Even in CA last weekend our hotel had all services available and we ordered breakfast every day. 5) We paid more for a room that is supposed to have food and beverage service on our patio by the adult pool. We are on our third day here now and not once have we been offered to be served on our patio. 6) The umbrella on our patio is broken, like metal rods sticking out of the bottom of the canvas and watch your head as you walk by unless you want your eyes stabbed out broken. 7) Our daughter and husband paid for a cabana at the adult pool for the day that should have come with food and beverage service. We've had to go to the bar ourselves and order food because it's like pulling teeth to get service around here. General comments: Rooms are very old looking. It's obvious they've refreshed them but still old looking. Very thin walls. We can hear the people next to us unzipping their luggage and talking at a normal conversation level. Hawks Cay Resort is on Duck Key. The resort took a big hit with the hurricane a couple years ago and had to be gutted and built again. The result is you now have beautiful new rooms with updated baths. Our room had a nice size balcony they looked down over the pool and lagoon. The view was stunning. The dolphin experience is very nice! The cool thing is that you don't have to do the experience to see the dolphins, like most places. You can stand along the railings anytime and watch the dolphins playing. You can see the trainers feeding and working with the dolphins at all times. The only issue with the resort, as they start up again, is the lack of staff. They just didn't seem to have the staff they needed to get the job done. For instance, there was only one waitress, clearly overworked, at the pool each day. When you're in need of a cool drink by the pool and it takes over an hour, your vacation experience suffers. Oh man. Where do I start? Upon arrival the woman checking us in couldn't care less & seemed bothered with our early arrival. We waited by the pool & had lunch by the bar. You literally had to cover your food or the birds would fly down and take it. When we finally got into our room it was disgusting. The blinds were broken off & there was a live roach in our bathroom. The stairs carpet looked dirty & bathrooms all looked corroded. My pillow had yellow sweat marks - so grossed out. The decor didn't match & it had a funny smell to it. We called down for trash bags because there weren't any for the kitchen & they never came. Shocker. The next day we went down to the pool & our server wasn't that friendly & we'd have to flag him down to get a drink or food. The umbrellas give everything but shade. We found ONE umbrella that gave adequate shade. Unfortunately, my elderly father fell and busted his knee open. A man named James who worked for the hotel was kind enough to wrap his knee and that's it. No incident report, follow up - NADA. Around 4 pm I called the concierge to see if we can get more info on the Dolphins Connection - no one was at the desk; so they took my info & said someone would reach out the next day. That didn't happen. The next day we had the same pool server & again, lackluster of service and attitude. We later went to the steakhouse & we all were sick for the rest of the evening. Chicken was dry, kids pasta tasted like it had ketchup on it, not marinara. Steaks were dry & the dessert left much to be desired. Our server was good, at least. Definitely not worth the $700 bill. Our last day we knew to keep our expectations low, but had a new server, Omar, who did a fantastic job. We checked out this morning and didn't get the standard "How was your stay?". Nope, just the bill & sent us off. It's a shame, because we were all looking forward to this trip as the family flew in from all over the U.S. read more

I can't believe they charge $700 a night for this shit hole. It's like an old tiny outdated motel room. Our air conditioner doesn't work, the fan in the living room doesn't work, tiny little old bathroom with very little water pressure. Little hundred dollar 32 inch TVs with no premium channels, no chairs on the front porch, the stairs on the back porch are deteriorating. The dock behind the building is closed off because it's deteriorating. I could go on, but stay away from this place. read more

I rarely write reviews, but feel compelled while we're still in the middle of our vacation, perhaps as a means to air our frustrations and provide fair warning for future visitors. We arrived and our unit was unavailable several hours after it should have been ready. The maintenance crew was working on the air conditioning when we arrived and it never worked properly over 3 days of multiple maintenance calls. While the staff were helpful on the phone and maintenance people were friendly, the issue was never fixed and there was no follow-up of any variety outside of us calling back and escalating the matter. In the end, the air conditioner was broken beyond repair and we had to move to a new unit, smaller unit on the other side of the property away from the rest of our family. Now the staff have tried to make things right by crediting the cost difference between units and by offering some resort credits and, in the grand scheme of things we could have been way way worse off... there could have been no other units available, COVID is probably impacting staffing levels, etc... but for the premium price the resort charges, some very simple and basic efforts to follow through would go a long way. Our "replacement" unit also has it's fair share of issues, from a broken porch door that anyone can open from the outside to what looks to be blood stains on the couch... none of which really warrant the premium costs. Other things to know -- cellular service on the resort outside of the main building is poor to non-existent (that one is on T-Mobile) and while their advertised wi-if does cover the property, it borders on unusable. Be warned that wi-fi calling is a total crapshoot, so you'll need to communicate via text messages. Other basics that the resort lacks are having sufficient cookware for the kitchen units and lounge chairs at the pool for the guests. Many are left without chairs and need to lay out on the deck or sit on the top of a wall, I came into this vacation wits high hopes that the negative reviews were perhaps a bit over the top (and some were) . Our travel agent also warned us the resort is a bit "tired", but we hoped that, for the accommodations we selected and premium price we paid, we'd avoid that trap (and our first unit mostly did just that), but I'm sorry to say that our experiences have fallen short and have to be "those people" that are continually raising concerns and issues to management, all of which have detracted from what was going to be a relaxing time with family away from reality. read more

The is by far the worst resort experience. Felt more like we were at a 2 star hotel. We booked a 2 bedroom villa for around $1000 a night... nothing about the villa was nice, felt like a cheap motel room. Broken outdoor fan. The master head shower was broken as well. The master bathroom is tiny and all the finishing is the cheapest they can find. The whole place is ugly! NO housekeeping unless you remember the request it 24 hours in advance! Horrible! I called them a few times and they kept promising to send someone but no one ever came to pick up the room. Can you imagine spending that money and coming back to an undone bed. I'm leaving more stressed than when I got here. I complained and they gave me a credit towards the room but really it doesn't cover a bad weekend spent. So this why I am writing this review. If I could give minus five stars I would. We have been going to Hawks Cay for a really long time and really have never had any issues. We went on our honeymoon and fell in love. During our most recent visit the first week in August of 2022, that love turned into disgust. Without getting into the very long 6 day event of nothing but aggravation, here's the problems we had. -rust on the bathroom door -mold on the AC vent -broken plastic on the shower door -mold on the shower door -urine on the toilet at check in -shower would not drain properly -no wash cloths and only two towels -nasty staff -refused to give us towels after requesting multiple times -refused bar service because we were sitting by the pool -poor service at the pool (got no service until we complained about being refused service at the bar and no waiter wanted to bring us cocktails) -panties Lon the floor -management that didn't care to be bothered with any problems -cloudy pool -panties on the floor by the gazebo -dirty tables by the marketplace ( we had to clean a table to sit) -towels on the floor in the marketplace soaking up water from the fridge. (there our entire stay) -broken lounge chairs by the pool -filthy common areas -dirty floors throughout the main building and filthy walls -laundry carts left out in the hall I contacted a manager who refunded us two nights and promised to get things fixed but never did. They only offered to move us on our fifth night and we were only staying one more night. The room they were going to move us to was next door and just as bad. The shower had mold and soap scum all over it and hair in the drain too. It was disgusting. I contacted their corporate office (Benchmark @ 281-367-5757) and ended up being transferred to Shannon Wilson. She stated this is one of their best properties and the general manager, Sheldon, would get back to me. I forwarded her all the pictures, plus yelp and Facebook reviews with problems similar to mine and other with different issues too. A week later I called again because I had not heard back and was told Sheldon was on vacation, but he would call me when he gets back and they will make it right. Three weeks later I called again and was sent a passive aggressive email from Jordan saying " at this point we are going to go ahead and refund you". I received a call from the GM 4 weeks after my initial complaint and he didn't really sound like he cared. I got no follow up from Shannon Wilson and I'm not surprised. It's clear that they dont want to hear the problems and they think by refunding me for my stay made up for all the aggravation but it didn't. I would NOT recommend this resort to anyone and will NEVER stay there again. This is definitely not a 4-5 star resort. It's more like a 2 star resort at best with 5 star prices. - Accommodations: While the location is good -- between Marathon and Islamorada -- there was a lot to be disappointed about, especially considering the price point. The accommodations were terrible (had to call to get our villa changed from the very old, outdated and dirty Unit #5053 after 3 days of our 7-day stay). I've included some pictures. I don't think anyone would want their family to stay here. We even had to call again the next day since we were told by the night manager that someone would contact us before 3p the next day, but nobody ever did. When I called the front desk that next day at 3p, they had no idea what I was talking about and had me explain everything all over. Beware! All of Hawks Cay's villas are privately owned which means that some owners care and use them but many more seem to approach them with a land-lording (I will spend nothing to maintain this unit) mentality. In the case of 5053, the carpet was so filthy due to many years of neglect that the bottoms of our feet were black just from walking around INSIDE. The furniture was at least 20 years old and in very poor condition. One of the bedrooms had a strong and disturbing odor. The vents for the central air were visibly caked with years of grime. Who knows what's going in my kids' lungs? I'm not sure why the resort would allow these and other owners to tarnish their brand, but they definitely have. Even after switching, to an admittedly much cleaner and more updated unit, I don't want to have to ask when I check in -- "Hey, can you please give me a unit that is not completely filthy and run-down?". No, I shouldn't have to, again, especially not at this ridiculous price point. This unit (5053) should be taken out of circulation. Nobody should be placed in a room that is so bad that they have to move partway through their trip when they're spending close to $600 per night. For the hassle of having to move rooms, we were provided a $200 dinner voucher, which, while we appreciated, was not sufficient in light of the unit's condition. Effectively, we were not provided the accommodations we paid for, instead inferior ones nowhere near what was presented online in print or photo. However, I didn't argue, just wanting to move on with our family vacation and make the most of our remaining time together. - Amenities: The amenities, such as the much-hyped "lagoon" and kids area are underwhelming and lacking, especially compared to other true resorts that you might find in any many other cities in Florida. They were also poorly maintained with very murky water in the main pool and kids pool on at least 4 days there (maybe from the massive amount of people/ sunscreen?), with food and dirty towels everywhere. In search of cleaner, less crowded areas, we went to the Sunset Villas pool. The water appeared clear but you soon realize you must compete with large iguanas which drink from the pool and defecate in/ near it. The units right in front of the pool also appear to treat it as their own personal pool, with dirty clothes and swim diapers hanging from the pool fence. There were also no towels -- just a huge pile of dirty ones. More on service -- even though we made it clear when we booked that we would be needing a pack-n-play (crib) and height chair, we still had to call the front desk and remind them when they were not there by late evening. Not a huge deal, whatever, but, when the pack-n-play finally arrives, it comes without a cover and a balled-up used tissue in it -- top notch guys!! The bottom line is that based on my family's experience during our week-long stay at Hawk's Cay, we would not return and would advise others to choose a different "resort" for their money. read more
