NEVER AGAIN! Haystack has been around forever. I've been eating here for decades and I am saddened to write this review because I was very disappointed. I ordered a pizza for delivery and was told it would arrive in an hour. After 90 l minutes I called and they said the driver left with it 30 minutes ago. It arrived 1 hour and 45 minutes later. The pizza was cold. Room temperature cold as though it had sat out on the counter overnight. I was able to put the whole pizza in the palm of my hand. It had no warmth at all and was stiff as a board. The pizza had no flavor whatsoever. The most bland and plain pizza I've ever had and I've had plenty. I've had cold leftover pizza from other places that tasted better than this. Costco pizza is better and they're just meh. I think it was a frozen pizza from the grocery store. The antipasto salad was soggy as if they washed the lettuce but never drained it. The very small amount of dressing couldn't even stick to the veggies because they were so wet and soggy. An awful experience all around. They offered to send me a new pizza but I declined the offer. Like I said NEVER AGAIN. Farewell Haystack. read more

I grew up in the Noe valley and was visiting from Austin Texas, and asked my son to take me to Haystack. It was just absolutely an amazing experience. The pizza was on point the staff was so kind to us love love love you guys. read more

The food is good as ever. The review is on the service. We were a group of 6, My friend and I both ordered the Veal Scalapini the others ordered pizzas. The pizzas came out in a very timely manner however the veal took 2.5 hours to come. Apparently the piece of paper the order was on fell in the kitchen. This is unexusable. I could go on about how horrible Tina was but I wont. Get rid of Tina and everything will be great again. read more

I have writing bad reviews for places we love to go to but unfortunately Haystack is not what it used to be!! The staffing levels are one person, sometimes 2 to handle the front dining room, to go orders, and also the back room. That is not sustainable. We feel so sorry for the staff....they are worked way too hard for what they have to do. It seems the owners daughter has cut staffing to save money......I get it but at some point you have to re-evaluate. Our last 2 visits have had us waiting for service or our orders....not blaming the staff--they run their asses off in there!! The "manager" is never around. It's a family pizza and beer place but I needed to scratch an itch, and well... Here goes... The bruschetta used tasteless hot house tomatoes and packaged, grated cheese. A point for fresh-ish basil and crunchy garlic bread. Linguine with white clam garlic sauce was super creamy (not what I was expecting) and pasta was well done, not al dente. Very garlicky. This delightful and quaint restaurant has a longevity of excellent pizza and great service. I've been ordering pizza here for over 20 yrs. this time I was able to enjoy their restaurant menu due to a special occasion. They went above and beyond to make the evening great. Good pizza, been coming to Haystack for decades. Due the Covid-19, it has become the take out pizza place. The staff is friendly, the food is fresh and it is in a nice area. It is a nice small business in Noe Valley where other small businesses thrive. The people are friendly and happy next door to the Haystack where there is a cute gathering/ mini play area. Parking can be a bit of a pain as this is a busy area but the pizza is worth it. read more

We've been loyal customers for over 15 years now and have noticed a significant decline since new management has taken over. Haystack used to be our favorite Restaurant without question, and as things currently stand, we are going to have a very hard time going back. The only reason we would go back is for the workers who stayed from the past management, including the servers, delivery drivers, and cooks. We can go on and on with details, but in a nutshell, new management has made eating in the restaurant feel incredibly stressful and unpleasant to the point where we were genuinely uncomfortable. It is disappointing to see how new management is treating their staff. Also...what's happened to the TV? Since new management has taken over, the TV seems to always be off. How can that be at a Restaurant in such a sports city like ours? Live sports was always on before. This is just another example of things going downhill. We really miss former management. read more

This was kinda on my list of places to try for a long time, but just now got to it. The service was pleasant, good thing we went early, the woman seemed to be the only one working the front & the restaurant was getting pretty filled as we were there. We ordered their Haystack pizza (basic meat filled pizza). It was ok, nothing special in the least bit, just a basic pepperoni, sausage, etc pizza. Way too many other pizza places around for me to want to go back for just "average" pizza. I guess a popular neighborhood place tho cuz people were coming in for to-go orders. I ate here for 30 years. The Alexander all meat pizza use to be great. I always ordered the extra large wagon wheel and recommended others to do the same. Past year they have gone downhill. The sauce is not as good and they skimp on the toppings. They need to get back to their old recipe and quality or they will lose more customers. read more

So it was a decent pizza, but it was the experience that really left me out in the cold. I ordered a pizza for pick up, and showed up at the allotted time. I was told my pizza went out with a delivery driver and they had to "get it back." Did I receive a single apology? No. I was told "it will just be a few minutes". When they got it back from the delivery driver, the pizza was handed to me and I was told "have a good night". By the time I got it and got it home of course it was ice cold. Never again. read more

Above average pizza. I got take out. Much better than most similar independent pizza restaurants. I appreciate the quality ingredients, FLAVOR, attention to details, and friendly staff. The price is a bit higher than comparable pizzerias, but it's worth it. I appreciate the option of whole wheat crust. One recent disappointment (this the minus one star) is that the pizza slices fell apart at the tip when removing each slice from the pie. This usually doesn't happen at most pizza places. Not sure how to prevent it -- somehow the toppings are sticking to the crust. I'd still go back dive it tasted good. My family and I were in San Francisco, Noe Valley last night for a performance at Song Bird Studios. Afterward we decided to have dinner at Haystack Pizza. My mom had introduced me and my siblings to this pizzeria when we were little kids. I must say it was still as delicious as I remembered. The food angel hair pasta with clams in a garlic sauce, spinach pizza, the Haystack pizza, baked penne in a red sauce, & penne with cheese to name a few of our entrees was so delicious that we ate without taking any photos. Their desserts were equally delicious the strawberry cheesecake, chocolate cake, tiramisu, with coffee. I did however take photos of those before we devoured them! I was astonished to learn that the same family (husband & wife) were the owners and operators for the last 41 years!! Their customer service and attention to detail was phenomenal! The restaurant has an old world charm to it, that exudes warmth and a sense of home. From the time we entered to our very last bite we were catered to like we were guests in their home. Kudos to the entire team! Your attention to detail and passion to provide excellent food and phenomenal customer service is commendable! We will definitely dine here again in the future!! read more

Food : I only did a Take out here and haven't really dined in. Most of the times when I don't know the place too well, I hesitate to order in given that 1) I don't know the quality of the food 2) Sometimes the food tastes very different when you dine in vs take out. This place was close to where I live and I thought I'd give it a shot and I am glad I did. Its a tiny space but the pizzas are amazing. I ordered the Pepperoni and margarita make your own pizza with thin crust and they were awesome! Take out or not, it tasted great! This place also has a tiny Wine bar where you can order wine by the bottle or glass with your food. Ambience : Since I have not dined in, I can't really speak about the experience but I have been indoors to pick up and the place looks like a cute homely hole in the wall but with close seating. Staff : I was helped by an elderly gentleman who brought out the take out and a young gentleman who worked the counter. Both of them were extremely extremely sweet. They seemed to be in a cheerful mood and we had a nice little chat while I waited for the order. Value for money : I would say the prices are a little too steep when I have had similar pizza at a much cheaper rate elsewhere. But the service is worth it. I would say this could be one of the best Pizzas in Noe valley so if you are restricting yourself to Noe, this is where you should eat. read more

When I was a kid, my parents would take me to the same neighborhood pizza spot every Friday. Even now, decades later, I crave it. While Haystack isn't the same as that pizza spot, it satisfies my nostalgia. Decor is quirky, it's clear they've got regulars from the neighborhood, and you're treated with warm mom and pop vibes. The pizza isn't fancy, but it's flavorful and filling. We got a large Old MacDonald and that thing was HEFTY. Two of us happily ate half of it for dinner and are very full. At $40 for the whole pizza, dinner ran $10/pp. Pretty solid. Come support a long time pizza spot (since 1972!) the next time you're feeling nostalgic. read more

Before Saturday Night, it had been awhile since I have been to Haystack's pizza. After Saturday Night, I won't wait that long again. It was very good, but here are my reasons for loving it: 1.) We needed a place at the last minute for 15 and they fit us right in. We had one long table that was fit for the Queen's Crew (Happy Birthday Monica!!!). It was very reasonable price wise too~ 2.) The Owner, when carding me - actually thought I was underage! LOL, won me over - right there. Okay, I guess I shouldn't have included that in my review, but it was awesome. 3.) Most importantly - the food, the salads were huge and great. The Greek Salad had all the fixin's of a great greek salad. The house salad, although intended to be a personal side salad was very large as well. The pizzas were delish! (See MY posted pics) We ordered: 1.) Luigi the Italian, which was Pesto, Fresh Garlic and Tomato - really good and one of my favorites. 2.) Cleopatra, grilled eggplant, sun dried tomato, fresh garlic, feta and red sauce. 3.) The Haystack, Sausage, Salami, pepperoni, mushroom, bell pepper and onion. Very Good. 4.) Jolly Green Giant, Broccoli, Zuchinni, Fresh Garlic, Onions, Mushrooms and Fresh Tomato. I only tried No. 1 and 3 of the pizza list above, but they all looked wonderful and everyone enjoyed their meals. I would definitely recommend this place to my friends and family. read more

I Work in the Neighborhood and Tried Haystack Pizza for Dinner for the First time Tonight. I Would Love to Make it Known that it's not just a Typical Pizzeria but more of a Local Italian Family hole in the Wall in Noe Valley. The Manager Dino takes Pride in his 50 years of being a part of this Restaurant. I had the Pleasure of being served by Mireya and Rosa who are So Accommodating and Sweet. I Even met their Delivery Driver Paulo (Yes Old School Delivery is Available). A lot of Restaurants in the area do not open until 5pm but they are open from 11am to about 9pm. The only reason they get any stars at all from me is that my wife loves their clam linguini. OK, great clam linguini. The sign on the door says PIZZA. The pizza s horrible.
