Dr Schaubert came to our home and showed the utmost respect and compassion for our 14 yr old pup. All of us being puddles, Dr Schaubert kindly walked us through what to expect, gave us plenty of time to say goodbye, and had arranged for transport just after so we did not have to stress about that. I made a Yelp account just so I could write about the experience my family and I had with Dr. Schaubert. We sadly had to say goodbye to the goodest boy in the world, but she guided us through it with incredible grace and compassion. My 12-year-old, 100 pound Labrador had always hated the car, and he'd lost so much mobility that transporting him anywhere would be an impossibly stressful task for everyone involved. Instead, with Dr. Schaubert's help, we were able to have him pass peacefully, surrounded by flowers, in his favorite spot outside. She arranged for a crematory service to come pick him up afterwards, and they were also amazingly kind. We got a card in the mail from her about a week after, too, where she wrote a little bit about his personality quirks and expressed sympathy for our loss. It was a really nice personal touch. Honestly. I'm really not the type of person who writes reviews. But I can't stress enough how big of a difference she made. I hired Sara to visit after my pug was diagnosed with a terminal illness. I wanted to meet with her before I knew it was time to say good bye to my dog. She was patient and met with me for a lot longer than I expected. She listened and gave me her opinions without pushing them on me. Dr. Sara Schaubert is the best. My 12 year old cat Gabriel was a nightmare at the vet and only lived inside so I didn't take him to a vet towards the end of his life when he was losing weight and refused to eat any varieties of food I gave him. I certainly wasn't going to drag him to a vet to have him put down when he had finally wanted to spend his last days lying in the middle of kitchen closer to us than before (when he would hide in our garage all the time). Dr. Schaubert understood all of this and came to our home without judgement and with compassion and quiet that i needed to provide Gabriel a loving exit. She explained everything and allowed me to guide where and how fast to let him go. I am a hospice nurse and really felt that Dr. Schaubert is a huge credit to her profession guiding end of life care and compassionate euthanasia. She provides excellent guidance on making this hard decision to put down your loved family member and is very responsive to calls and emails. She made room in her schedule when I hadn't prepared for how quickly Gabriel was declining at the end. She also followed up with a handwritten note a week later just checking on how I was doing. I could not have asked for a better, more caring vet to take care of my precious little girl Dottie during the last few months of her life. Dr. Schaubert provided Dottie both acupuncture for a variety of ailments as well as hospice care and pain management. And Dr. Schaubert was with us on Dottie's last day to help make her passing as comfortable as it could be for all involved. Acupuncture: Dottie always rested more comfortably after a visit from Dr. Schaubert. I'm convinced arthritis in her knee was completely alleviated by it and arthritis in her hips was helped by it. She also walked better after her treatments. Hospice Care/Pain Management: Dr. Schaubert was always there for us when Dottie needed something. She was always available via email which was so comforting to me because Dottie was so medically fragile. Home Euthanasia: Dr. Schaubert knew Dottie was in the last weeks of her life well before I was willing to realize it myself. But she helped me come to the decision on my own, especially when we talked about setting thresholds like when Dottie could no longer safely go to the bathroom on her own. She also arranged for the Austin Pet Memorial Center to be waiting for Dottie after she passed. It was horrible losing my little girl but I couldn't have asked for a more peaceful passing for her, thanks to Dr. S. If Dr. S is still practicing when my little boy gets older and needs more than what western veterinary medicine provides, I'll definitely request her help again. read more

I contacted her via email on a Saturday morning not sure if I would get a response before Monday (based on her posted business hours), but she contacted me the next morning since our family lived within her immediate area and I had expressed concern that our vet had cautioned us about the potential of a sudden decline in our cat's terminal health situation that could lead to misery for him and us. Thankfully she was able to accomodate us that afternoon, which we will be eternally grateful for. It is never easy to lose a beloved pet - this was not the first time we've had to euthanize one - but Dr. Schaubert's willingness to help us out in our precarious situation was a huge comfort to me and my family. It allowed for all of us to be present and in the comfort of our home during the very emotional time of saying goodbye to our sweet boy who had been a part of the family for over 15 years. Even if you've never had acupuncture before, if your vet recommends it, TRY IT, and CALL DR. SCHAUBERT! Let me tell you why: My almost-14-year-old poodle, Leo, had three disks in his back that were bulging but not pushing into the spinal cord, so surgery wouldn't help. Doctors prescribed painkillers, physical therapy, and acupuncture. We decided against PT, bc it might hurt more than help. So I emailed Dr. Schaubert late on a Friday with a summary of his issues, along with questions about her rate, recommendation for frequency of treatment and her availability. She emailed back the next day with a thorough answer addressing every one of my questions. Came over the following Tuesday and administered acupuncture. Dr. Schaubert was so patient and gentle, not just that visit but in each time she came over. We had tough conversations, about quality of life, Leo's strength, when it's right to continue palliative care vs. letting him go. Never things you like to talk about, but her sensitive yet direct manner made it as easy as it could be. It was a Thursday; we set the next appointment for Monday, treatment TBD: either more acupuncture or the other. (I hate even typing it!) Sunday afternoon, Leo CHASED THE BALL. His interest was up, his energy was up, he was stronger, it was incredible. I shot video and sent it to Dr. S with the good news. She emailed a joyful response. In total, we had three visits spaced five days apart each. Every session, he improved. We only took a break bc she went on a well-deserved vacation. (Her practice consists mainly of acupuncture, hospice, and "the other", so breaks are especially important!) In the event I wanted to bring someone else in while she was gone, she gave me details on the exact location of her needle placement and treatment, so the care could be consistent regardless of practitioner. She made it clear her priority was my pooch. She's wonderful; her smile and demeanor are genuinely pleasant, and she backs it up with know-how in both traditional Western and Eastern veterinary practices. I'm sorry I have to write this 5-star review because it means my big dog buddy isn't with me anymore. However, here I am. Dr. Schaubert's demeanor is kind and gentle, and still informative. She let me know what was going to happen, what was happening, and what had happened. She made me feel comfortable in letting me know that she sees grown men cry every day. Anyone in the difficult situation of considering euthanasia for their pet should absolutely consider using Healing Arts Housecalls. I recommend without hesitation. One word of advice--if you're already thinking about it, it's probably time to call for a consultation. Hers is not a same day service, generally. She will come out and assess the situation, tell you if it's an appropriate time or not. But she needed a couple of days advance notice. If you wait too long, there may be some undue suffering. Having this sort of thing done at home is THE way to go. No stressing the pet out with a visit to the vet's office. She directed me to Austin Pet Memorial Center for disposition of the body, and they were very kind and helpful too. read more

The people at this place are judgemental and rude. They wouldn't even come to look at my pets. I have had my cat for almost 13 years. I think I know what's best for her, not someone who looks at a questionnaire and then gets all judgey at me without knowing everything I have done for my babies. Home based was far better for our dog than the stress and anxiety the dog experiences going to the vet's office. Dr. Sara Schaubert was prompt, supportive, caring and is a dog lover. She was patient, kind, and non-judgemental. We could see that our dog knew right away that she is a dog lover. If you're trying to make a decision, I recommend you call her and chat. With such a hard decision, it's nice to have a sounding board, and she can provide valuable information to help you. Also, she is in demand, and I recommend you schedule a time that's best for everyone and not wait until your animal is really suffering; she may not be able to drop everything and come right over. Dr. Schaubert was wonderful. Our 15 and 1/2 old Boxer-Pit Bull mix was really struggling, and she helped us come to the decision that euthanasia was the loving and kind thing to do for him. I had never been through the euthanasia process before, and I was really scared of what it would be like. We had our dog since he was 2 months old, and he was our best friend and a very important part of our family. Dr. Schaubert answered my many questions beforehand, and made me feel informed and more at ease about what would happen. The day she came, she showed up exactly on time and had a very calming and compassionate demeanor. The whole process was very peaceful. Our dog liked her a lot, and we were able to feed him hamburgers (his favorite) before he drifted off peacefully. I couldn't have asked for a better passing for him. She also arranged cremation services for us, alerted our vet, and even sent us a sweet condolences card a week later. Dr. Schaubert has the perfect combination of information, sensitivity, and calming energy needed for such a difficult job. I noticed that most of the other reviews for Dr. Schaubert had to do with end-of-life services. I instead chose her for help diagnosing some G.I. issues with my middle-aged dog because I was impressed by her blend of top-notch western training at A&M and her alternative therapy bent with acupuncture. She was just as talented as everyone else here wrote. Dr. Schaubert arrived promptly for our appointment, spent a considerable period of time reviewing my dog's previous bloodwork and x-rays, asked a number of relevant diagnostic questions, then got to work with her acupuncture. I was curious how my dog would respond to the latter, and he loved it! He relaxed on the couch throughout the treatment while Dr. Schaubert and I discussed complementary approaches and other follow-up actions. I highly recommend Dr. Schaubert for routine veterinary consultations in addition for her more specialized work. And if my dog could talk, then he would give her a big paws up as well! read more

Dr. Schaubert was outstanding. Our much loved St. Bernard was in horrible shape. She was riddled with cancer and we knew that we needed to put her out of her misery. We were trying to hang on to her as long as we could keep her comfortable in the hopes that we could find a medical solution. But as we waited for a call from our normal vet, Bella made her way out into the freezing rain and laid down. I couldn't move her. I knew it was time. We love our regular vet and completely trusted him to help her, but we didn't want Bella to suffer from another painful car ride. Over the years I watched as my Maynard got older, sicker and less Maynard-like. At the end I knew that the last good thing I could do for him was let him pass at home. The thought of putting him in a cage and making that drive to a vet was just unthinkable. I am usually a very logical person, able to make resolute decisions, but with this - well, I was in a teary mess of indecision. I found Dr. Sara Schaubert through Yelp and through the reviews, knew she was the right vet. She is compassionate and understanding, really listening to the doubts I was having. She talked me through all the options with patience. I contacted her on a Sunday through email and did not expect to hear back until Monday, but she answered right away. Her schedule was very flexible, offering any day in the following week. Maynard was not scared at all and I was right there with him. I choose cremation for Maynard and what could have been a very awkward experience turned out the exact opposite. Chuck from Austin Pet Memorial came right as Dr. Schaubert was leaving. (they are the only cremation service she works with) He brought lightness to the situation. Really just the nicest guy you could ever meet. If I could give 10, I would. My baby girl, Soy, was despondent when, after 15 years, her brother disappeared. She lost weight. Stopped eating, etc. Anyway, Dr. was so responsive, flexible, kind, great with them (added two kittens). When it was time, it was so peaceful for her. She was in her walk-in closet, her bed, me there. Nothing really eases the pain of losing a pet, but dr. was awesome. She also does acupuncture. Highly recommend. read more

This has been a no good, very bad day. I had to say goodbye to my dear pal of 19 years, Sophie the cat. She'd suddenly passed the point where life was good. Ms Sara has been wonderful. She has be coming to see my 17 yr old for over 2 years now after she tore her first ACL in her back leg. I honestly feel she really prolonged her life doing acupuncture and putting her on some herbal meds for her ailments. With Isis being older all the pain meds would make her liver levels spike. After she tore her other ACL I wasn't sure if I would have to put her down. We discussed it each visit and she told me when I was ready she would be there to get us through it. I'm happy to say we made it another year and 3 months until I knew it was time in June. She made the process easier to handle in making the decision which is never easy. I know my baby went peacefully to doggie heaven. If you need to trust anyone with your 4 legged children Ms Sara is the best and always walks through everything and explains and lets you decide what is best for you. My golden retriever, Beau has been treated with acupuncture by Dr. Schaubert for the past five years. Dr. Schaubert has made a tremendous difference in Beau's life. He was diagnosed with a degenerative spinal cord at age 5 and given 18 months to live. Today he is 12 and although he does have muscle weakness in his hind legs, he is super healthy and happy. Beau greets Dr. Schaubert in the front yard when she arrives for his acupuncture treatments. Dr. Schaubert has also helped with his skin issues and ear infections. Dr. Schaubert was amazing. We had a senior Siamese named Luna who was tightly bonded with me. First part of July she started sneezing blood. We took her to the vet and they treated her for an infection. When the bleeding didn't stop, we took her back and our vet referred us to a specialty vet clinic in S. Austin. They had to do a rhinoscope and a CT scan, which revealed that Luna had a tumor growing in her nasal passage. They said they could treat with Chemo and radiation, but at her age it would probably be too hard on her (especially the trips from Bastrop to Austin). So, we took her home to love while we could. Meanwhile knowing what we were faced with, I started doing research. One of my work friends had been through this and sent me a spreadsheet of all the research she's done on the vets in Austin who do this. Another woman I work with used Dr. Sarah Schaubert so we wanted to see if she would help us. We live in Bastrop, so that was the challenge. We got an auto-response that she was out of town on vacation. Darn..So we started plan B. Luna did pretty well for about a month, then started slowing down. Luckily Dr. Schaubert got home and returned our email. She said she didn't normally go as far as Bastrop, but would be happy to help us. When the time came and Luna stopped eating and drinking, we set the date for the following Monday. Monday came and Luna had a good day which REALLY made this all hard. Dr. Schaubert showed up right on time. She's very calm, very kind and understanding. She sat with us while I held Luna, and Luna didn't like strangers and started to get nervous. Dr. then administered a tranquilizer shot to calm her down, so we had about ten minutes to say goodbye. Once Luna was well asleep, Dr. shaved her front leg and administered an IV. She then lets you sit with the pet as long as you wish, and when you're ready she administers the second shot. Luna's spirit left almost immediately. Calm, quiet, not stressed. Of course I immediately broke down in to tears and Sara backed away and let us grieve and hold Luna. She then went to her car and got a large basket with a soft blanket from her car. We put Luna in the basket and she carefully carried her away. She took Luna to the Austin Pet Memorial Center which is down near Buda (another high recommendation, they treated her cremation with the dignity of a human. I've never had to do this before, and to top this off, this was the closest I've ever been to an animal. It's hard, you cry and miss your baby but it does get better. Today is two weeks, and yes I'm crying as I write this but it's better. I hope this helps someone who has to go through this and when you do, my heart goes out to you. read more
