The second time I was kind of confused how they didn't check the other issues so that I didn't have to come back twice. They do honest work, but I feel like the parts aren't good quality. I called to ask about the cost to do a repair and they said they'd need to see the car first. I asked if there was a fee for that and they said there is no fee for inspection but there is for a diagnosis. I was confused by this and worried that when I brought it in, they'd end up saying they needed to do a diagnosis and charge me, so I asked for clarification. The man I spoke with clearly had no patience and just hung up on me. Very bad customer service. read more

I couldn't comment on the professional work because I end up didn't get my car fixed there. However, as a first time customer and after seeing so many positve reviews online, I thought this would be a pleasant experience but sadly it was not. I went there in the morning and the owner seemed to not be in a good mood. I didn't mind initially but everytime I tried asking a question, he always replied in a rush and I just felt like he tried to brush me off. The last straw was that he told me to "ask someone to pick me up" because the car needs more than 1 day to be fixed due to emission problem. However, when I called a day before, the lady stated that they may be able to give me a ride home !!! You know, I end up going to Toyota Dealership, they fixed my car within a day (then I passed the emission test). What's more, they dropped me off home and then picked me back to the dealership when the car was ready. It's all about being valued as a customer !!! read more

He was mad that I brought in a cheap bad car in. I saw really good reviews so I thought it would be a good idea to bring it to him. He wasn't very nice and was almost mad at me for bringing my car in. I can't afford a good, nice car. I can only get what I can afford. I felt judged and uncomfortable. Only nice thing was he allowed me to make a payment plan for 2 weeks. This was most uncomfortable experience I have had. Only go to this place if you have a nicer car. Once I pay him in 2 weeks, I no longer will be bringing my car in. This is not how we treat people. read more

I completely trust Ben with my car. My late grandma used to speak highly of Ben and his work in the 1990s when the shop was located at the corner of Willow Rd and Shermer Rd at Amoco in Northbrook. Sometimes my grandma would bring Ben food from her restaurant because she appreciated the work he did, and she respected the person he is. She would always make sure people were well fed. And she was a really good judge of character. I started bringing my car to Hong Kong Auto in 1998. When I moved away from the area in 2004 and lived in San Diego, then Seattle, then Boston, then Denver, I had come across a few really shady auto service shops (before I knew about yelp!) I now realize how important it is to take your car to someone you trust and avoid all the headache and stress of some other place that is cheaper and does a mediocre job or engages in dishonest practices. We moved back to Chicago in 2015, and now this is the only place I will take my car to. It can take me over an hour to get here, but it's totally worth the time. We've recommended this place to family and friends who now take their cars here for regular oil changes or for larger jobs, and though the service is not the cheapest, Ben will make sure your vehicle is running at its absolute best. I'm a 53 year old an with two cars and I have found Ben C. the owner of Hong Kong Auto to be fair, friendly and they go aboe and beyond what you would expect. I have been going there for 4 years. For instance we went thier this am for a recharge on the AC. While we were turning the car over to them I told tham the car was on lease but the tires were getting warn do I need to replace them. After learning how many more miles I would drive befor turning the car in the told me "why waste the money on new tires". I also had a broken mirror they gave me an estimate to replace and said find out what the dealer is going to knock of the price if they knock of less than what we'll charge we can skip it. Always honest always helpful and building thier business and they just expanded thier operation with two more bays. Unfortunately I had to get my car towed to this place which costed me $205. My mechanic changed the distributor around 2 months ago and Hong Kong mechanic told me that the reason why my car stopped working is because the cables were connected wrong which is a straight lie. Car would not start right if u put any of the cables wrong. And it worked fine almost 2 months. I got the car then in the morning I again got stuck on the highway I got my car towed to my mechanic and it was the bad converter. Not the line up of the cables. Hong Kong mechanic could not even explain how my car could work that long. Just be aware. Plus he charges almost 50 percent more than other mechanics. read more

I can not speak of the about the quality of their work because I just had a flat tire changed but I can say that their prices are exorbitant- it cost double what a normal service station would charge. Ben has worked on our cars, vans and trucks for years, since he was up at Shermer and Wilow. He always beats the dealer prices when working on our most expensive and new vehicles, and he has kept our high mileage 2nd and 3rd cars going for 100's of thousands of miles. As a matter of fact we have kept them years longer because of Ben's modest prices to fix them up. Like the other reviewer, I also have a "check engine light" on my SUV that Ben and I have been monitoring for 6 years. He respects that I don't want to fix that at a high price and I like that. I trust Ben and his crew. I find his prices to be the same or lower than any other places I have checked. And I have checked, and used coupons, etc. Ask Ben to match a coupon price and he will do what he can. The service at Hong Kong auto is relatively quick, from what I can see. I have also checked lots of parts prices against dealer quotes, and my finding is that Ben does not overcharge for dealer required parts, and most importantly, he will actually get parts prices from 2-3 places when aftermarket parts will work. 12 years, my 8 vehicles, most still running somewhere..... I have been a customer of Hong Kong Auto Service for over 10 years. Ben Chung, the owner, is why I continue to bring my cars to this shop. Ben is honest, hard working and is extremely competent at fixing cars. Last week, one of our cars did not pass the Emissions test due to an exhaust issue. Since our car is 14 years old, I was given a high estimate on how much it could cost to fix the problem due to old and rusty parts.
