I've been craving some delicious dim sum, but Boston doesn't have many dim sum restaurants. After hearing some good reviews about Hei La Moon, I decided to try it out. I ate a typical dim sum meal of shumai, har gow, chicken feet, cheung fun, short ribs, and some steamed egg custard buns. The service was very slow. Usually, at dim sum restaurants, there would be multiple carts being pushed around. However, at the time I went, there were only a couple carts being circulated and it took forever for the ones with dumplings to get to our table. Although the food was nothing spectacular, it definitely satisfied my dim sum cravings. Coming from the Bay Area where there are numerous dim sum restaurants, the food at Hei La Moon was mediocre. It was good enough for a one/time try, but I don't see myself coming here very often. read more

Hands down one of the best dim sum places in Boston. It's often a wait to get a table if you don't come early! We waited maybe 15-20 min before being seated as we came a little after opening time. The pacing between tables is right but we didn't mind. Their service is very prompt! They served the dim sum in the carts, which I always loved as a child! The dim sum was hot and fresh, as always. They have the staples like ha gao and shu mai, and they have so much other variety. You can also order other dishes as well. They also serve boba inside, but we didn't try it. A 3-3.5 star experience. Things seem to have changed with dim sum due to the pandemic. Business was slow on a late Monday morning and I was confused by how to order the dim sum until the waiter told us to just check off boxes on the paper menu. I'm glad they had pictures on the menu and English to accompany it because pre-pandemic it was a real challenge to catch the attention of the workers pushing their dim sum carts around and squirm about trying to get the ones I wanted. We got 3 dim sum dishes which were tasty but definitely nowhere near filling. I actually didn't like how the fried sesame balls were barely filled with NOT red bean but some sort of very dense lotus paste. It was surprisingly pricey at $4-5 per dish (didn't know until AFTER we paid the bill since there's no prices for each dim sum dish on the paper menu, or indication of the size category: small, medium or large which usually corresponds to how $$$ it'll be). We got 2 other larger dishes: flat rice noodles with veggies and beef fried rice. Man, so lack luster. Each was just very drenched in oil and plain-tasting. Idk if it's a Chinese style thing, but the rice noodles were just covered in a dark soy/oyster sauce starchy material. The fried rice was also surprisingly not seasoned with soy sauce and came out white, I think it was salty from just plain salt. Standard dim sum place with $5+ dim sum items! Came here on a Friday afternoon at around 2 Pm and there was no wait. The decor in this place looks great! Very banquet, extravagant-like with lots of gold colored things. They give you a paper menu and you order what you want from it before giving it back to the waitress. We ordered a wide variety of classic dim sum dishes such as the pork shiu mai, steamed roast pork bun, shrimp rice rolls, fried glutinous rice dumplings with meat. The food came in the carts afterwards, so not your typical "pick things while the carts are going around you" experience. The food was pretty good, my favorite was the chives and shrimp dumpling - it was super large and had lots of filling. My least favorite was the fried glutinous rice dumpling with meat, because the sticky rice wasn't as chewy as I would have liked. I walked into the restaurant to pick up my order, and then brought it home to eat. Once I opened the bag I realized there was no rice and that there were barely any vegetables to go with the duck. I love coming here when I'm craving dim sum and wanting the "cart" experience. They have two floors and the bottom floor has many large tables for bigger parties, so I've never had much trouble getting seated even when I come around noon with parties larger than 6. This is probably one of the cheaper dim sum places I've been to in Boston Chinatown. I can enjoy a pretty filling meal for less than $15 after tax and tip. They also accept credit cards. They have all of the standard dim sum menu items in carts along with other menu items which you can specifically order. I can't say that the food is mind blowing, but it definitely satisfies a dim sum craving. The food is on the greasy side in general. The seating area, dishes, and utensils are kept pretty clean but are a bit worn down. read more

We enjoyed the dim sum here and we have had lots of dim sum in different cities, including Hong Kong. Their shrimp dumpling was very well done, shu Mai was meaty and flavorful, and the shrimp rice roll was perfectly cooked. We also tried their fried crystal dumpling, chicken feet, steamed roast pork bun, fried turnip cake, and spicy wontons. I think because China Pearl Restaurant is closed for renovation, it's especially busy this time of year. Be wary that there will probably a line w a 15 minute wait time on weekend afternoons. The staff is busy so they won't be the most attentive to you, just walk up with your card and ask to take food directly to your table and it will save you a lot of time. The food is phenomenal and if you forgive the occasional rushed service, rude remark, and small mistakes, you will have a fun time. 5/5 for experience and food quality. One tray typically varies from $2.00 to $5.00 each. It can be more of course. 3. Ambiance - This is a big restaurant for a place in Boston. The venue has red wallpapers, wood panels, and some Chinese characters (such as the words double happiness and Lucky) in gold on the wall. It's a pretty nice looking place. I was expecting something that was a bit run down since it's an old city. Based on similar restaurants like this, it's a typical venue that many Chinese people will hold a wedding banquet or host a community event. Dress code here is casual. 4. Food - the typical staples I normally get at a dim sum restaurant are as follow: *Savory Dishes*: Shrimp Hargow (Shrimp Dumpling), Pork Shiu Mai (Shrimp and Pork Dumpling), Steam Roast Pork Bun (Chinese Kolache), Fried Taro Cake, Chicken Bun (Chicken Kolache), and Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf (Peel the leaf off before eating). *Sweet Dishes*: Sweet & Egg Yolk Bun (like a Danish pastry, but the filling is inside the bread), and the Bake Egg Custard Tart (Chinese Creme Brulee on a tart - influence by the Portuguese). If this is your first time eating dim sum, order from this list. I highly recommend it. Dip the savory dishes in soy sauce, except for the buns and the sticky rice. Eat the sweet dishes as is. Make sure to enjoy all this food with a pot of Chrysanthemum Hot Tea. 5. Cleanliness - Not exactly top notch. It can be better, but I've eaten at places that are really bad in third world countries. It was still enjoyable. I'm a harsh critic when it comes to cleanliness. If I have to put my finger on it, it's probably a 6.5 out of 10. 10 being the cleanliness. I think any dim sum is better than no dim sum, and I would try the other well known dim sum place in Chinatown before coming back to Hei La Moon. On the plus side: they use carts, and if you wait long enough, there will be a variety of dishes offered. Unfortunately, we were offered the same dishes for the first 40 minutes, and by the time different varieties were making it to the carts, we were already done. The tea is good, and came in a large pot. The bathroom was clean. On the downsides: much of the food was flavorless, the shrimp were tough, the steamed humbow had very little filling and it was overcooked, the thicker sauces were overly corn-syruped or corn starched, no chili paste on the table, no lazy susan on the larger tables, much of the food was tepid. We were there around 11 am on a Sunday, and the crowd picked up more around noon-- and for dim sum, always better to go when there are more diners present. Being military adjacent, we find ourselves far from family most of our holidays and so we end up making the best of plans with alternatives. For this Christmas Eve, we took some friends to Boston and had dim sum. We arrived when they opened, and were immediately seated. Nobody told us how the ordering process went, and there were no indications on what to do, so we winged it best we could. Immediately we were brought tea, and then the carts started rolling through. The best things we ate were the sticky rice in lotus leaf, the black sesame rolls, xiao long bao or soup dumpling (of which we ordered multiple orders), and some of the pork and green onion steamed dumplings. The char siu bao was good but lacked enough stuffing for my tastes, but the flavor was decent. We did put some orders in which we never received, which was the one downside of the meal. Those items were the pudding of tapioca and watermelon, as well as some other savory items they told us they would bring. As I wandered around looking for interesting places, I ran into Hei La Moon. I could not pass up the opportunity for some dim sum. Hei La Moon did not disappoint with its food! The food in this place is absolutely delicious and we made sure to try as many things as we could without exploding where we sat. I can't lie, the service is a bit on the slower end so you need to come with a bit of patience. Perhaps it's due to how ridiculously packed the restaurant is, but still. I have been in other places where this wasn't an issue. Due to the amount of people here it is also incredibly loud. Loud enough to make it tricky to have a conversation with the other person at your table. Of course that creates a cycle of people speaking louder to be heard and so on. Hei La Moon has some hits, but more misses. They have some solid classics like the char siu pork bao, lotus wrapped sticky rice (nuo mi ji), and century egg congee. Their shrimp dumplings and siu mai are good, but not the best I ever had (the best ones I've tried were in San Fransisco). There were a lot more misses like the Chinese Chive pancake and the chicken feet. The Chinese Chive pancakes were deep fried, but the oil got inside the filling and so it gave a very oily texture. The chicken feet is normally something I love, yet it had an off stink to it that was further made worse by a sour after taste. I've had plenty of chicken feet from dim sum so it's something I am used to eating. Perhaps it has gone bad. There is a modern dimsum dish they made which consisted of stir-fried rice wrapped in soy paper or something similar. That shouldn't have been on the menu. The steamed spare ribs had decent flavor, but texturally were very chewy and not easy to eat off the bone. read more

Went for Mother's Day and had a good dim sum experience. This was our first time. I think China Pearl (currently closed) and Windsor (no carts) are slightly better food-wise but I like Hei La Moon's room and atmosphere better. I felt like it was reasonably priced - the bill was $70 for four (we ordered one dish off the menu, the rest was dim sum) and we left stuffed. We parked a short walk away for $10 using Spot Hero. One of the best dim sum spots in Boston, but you can count on this place being ABSOLUTELY packed and chaotic on the weekends. There's a great variety of traditional dishes here that are tasty and satisfying, though a bit oily/greasy. For me, the absolute must-orders are the baked (not steamed!) char siu baos (bbq pork buns) and the zha leung with cilantro (fried dough wrapped in rice paper). I'm not normally one to crave char siu baos, but these mini ones always have me coming back for more - the slightly sweet and warm bun paired with the juicy roasted pork is the perfect match. The zha leung is also fantastic - they're made-to-order and served hot and fresh with an optional sprinkle of cilantro on top. Service isn't the friendliest (sadly very typical of Chinese dim sum joints) and ordering can be daunting if you don't speak Chinese, but the staff knows basic English and will get the job done. FYI on weekends the parking garage fee is reduced to $10 all-day with validation from the restaurant. Pretty good if you plan to spend the day near Chinatown or downtown. read more

My friends, colleagues and I love going there. -- Great memories accompanied with great food.
