This place is tucked away seeing it from the street you'd never know the yumminess hidden inside. I had a friend recommend coming here. I got a large Pozole Togo it came with hot bread. It was very affordable $13 hours they only take cash heads up! Inside is fun has music playing and lots of seating. This is a must if you're craving some good pozole or menudo. read more

We came here hoping to find tamales for the Christmas holiday. When we arrived, the restaurant was fairly quiet, with only one other group dining. We walked up to the counter to place our order, and the hostess/waitress approached us and asked how she could help. She was friendly and welcoming, which we appreciated. The overall experience felt a little unusual. The menu was very limited, and we ended up ordering just a tamale. It's also a cash-only establishment, which is good to know ahead of time. I was a bit surprised that the tamale was pulled from a to-go container, and for a place described as a bakery, there weren't any baked goods available or on display. The tamale itself tasted fine, but given the limited menu and overall experience, it's probably not a place I would return to. read more

While I would have LOVED to have dined here, alas my ol' high school buddy is a tenderfoot, and I usually steer clear of spicy options for his sake. But he certainly has no problem with their amazing Bolillos. They are far more dense then you may be used to, but are versatile; we've made garlic bread for an Italian din-din, toasted it to make breadcrumbs for meatballs, and paired them with amazing Tulley's deli meat. All deliciously toothsome. Front counter gal was cool, and while we ordered 6 rolls, when we opened the bag at home we had 10. A very nice bonus from her. This place was recommended for its great menudo so got there mid morning on Saturday and had the big bowl of menudo! It was worth the trip and it was delicious, plus it came with two huge rolls of bollio. You don't have to wait to be seated, we just came in and were told to sit where we would like. The waiter came right away and we ordered. Just need to pass on that this is a bakery and has a very limited menu so that is why you order and get your food right away. It's an older establishment with plenty of tables with real Mexican music playing in the background. They also have a takeout window to order. Overall enjoyed the quick service and delicious food. Reminded me of the Mexican panaderias restaurants in California. read more

Stopped in to check out the baked goods. However, there were none to be seen. I think they only actually bake bread as a side to their food items. The bread is very good! It is very simple decor inside and a very short and limited menu that is straight to the point. Check pictures attached. I ordered the large Pozole and it was very good. Be aware they serve bone with the meat which you can choose to pull off or just eat off the bone. Also, it is very greasy but this is how it is sometimes. Regardless, it is very tasty. The tamale was also very good and would highly recommend. It had a bit of spice to it but a large amount of meat inside. Overall, I say yes come here if you are looking for a plain menu but tasty food. Remember, there are no pastries here. read more

The best thing I ordered here were the tamales. The tamales are delicious and a great balance of masa and shredded meat (pork). A dozen is about $34.50 but it's worth it. Very filling and the chile is what makes it. The meat is delicious and the red Chile is perfect but not too hot. I have had their Menudo before and it's great. I used to love their baked goods but they stopped selling those. If your looking to order tamales, get there early. They sell out quickly. read more

Menudo menudo menudo. Best in town by far! Comes in a giant bowl with the right bread that goes with it. Be sure to bring cash and if its really what you want you can bring a pot that they will fill up for you. They will charge per scoop but we worth it. The food is alright every time we go and they try to convince us to get larger sizes because of how the prices are marketed,we tried the champurrado and I hate to say it's the worst we've ever had and we would probably do a better job at home! The staff are just plain about your experience don't really get phased by anything. The decor is very authentic in the Mexican culture so I will give them that. read more

Helen's is the one place in town guaranteed to find bisochitos (despite ABC being down the street). Plenty of other treats- aguas, Mexican coke, menudo, posole, Mexican cakes, and cookies. I went in for pan dulce but they only had a few conchas on a table for sale. I had to buy other pan dulces for a group so I can't attest to their taste but they were fresh. They only take cash. My only qualm is that it's called a bakery but there weren't many baked goods. I will be back to try the posole. read more

Llegue a las 8.20am pedi 22 piezas de pan blanco. Me dijeron que en 25 minutos estan listos. Ya eran las 9.10am y todabia no los tenina listo. Pedi un menudo para comer ahi mientras esperaba el pan tambien se les olvido llevarlo a la mesa. Atendieron a mas gente despies de mi. Cuando fui a preguntar por mi orden a las 9.10 las dos mocosas que atienden dsndome actitud que yo no abia ouesto orden del pan que apenas asi unos minutos les di mi ticket y ellas abian perdido mi orden y todabia enoajadas y de mal carientas con uno me dieron el pan todo crudo aparte me cobraron 22 piezas de pan y solo me pusier9n en bolsas 20 piezas de pan. Tienen muy mal servicio no saven atender a la gente la mocosa nomas agarra ordenes y no se fija lo que hace pero si esta a Risa y Risa en la cosina y perdiendo el tiempo. This bakery is across the street from Fair Plaza and has been around for years, though I suspect the owners aren't the original (it's a Mexican bakery with non-English speaking employees (owners?)). The sign out front is tall, but is falling apart, as has been for years. My uncle has stated for years that Helen's has the best menudo in town. In March, my husband and I finally gave it a try. The bakery is large inside and they had tons to offer-sweet breads, cookies, cakes, pastries, you name it. We went for lunch. They have a decent menu, including menudo and tamales. I don't recall what else is on there-more Mexican fare than New Mexican, but living on the East coast taught me some appreciation for good Mexican once I accepted that it was not the same as my motherland's cuisine. The restaurant was stifling hot-it must have been 85 degrees or hotter in there (in the middle of March), but we stuck it out. I had a bowl of menudo which was delicious; my husband had a bowl of posole, which looked quite tasty. He also ordered a tamale. It did not come with any chile, and like many Mexican tamales, was mostly masa, though the meat inside was good, if not spicy. It was very large, too. The best things, though, were the (flour) tortillas. We took a dozen home, in fact, and I'd go back just for those (they were still warm!). I ordered a Mexican Coke and due to the language barrier with the woman serving us, she seemed quite perplexed when she picked up my Coke and asked us something in Spanish and my husband said, "No, no." He thought she wanted to know if he wanted a Coke. After she left our table a little confused I realized that she was offering to open my Coke for me. Ha ha. It was a funny exchange. My moderately-proficient Spanglish failed me there. The place is CASH only, so while my husband left for an ATM a man approached me and told me to take a couple of loaves of the sweet breads sitting on a table by the door. I didn't think the guy worked there, but he seemed to be friends of the owners' or maybe he was one of the owners. Anyway, I took a couple, even though I'm not a huge fan of Mexican sweet breads. Once home, I realized that the breads were more than a day or two old. That or just the extreme heat in that place made the lard they cook with rancid. Anyway, I'll probably not be buying sweet breads there, but I wouldn't anyway, so no loss. I would like to go back for lunch again and to buy more tortillas and try their pastries. Solid 3 stars overall, 4 for the lunch. read more

This bakery offers excellent traditional Mexican sweet breads, desserts, cookies, cakes, and pastries. They also sell menudo/pancita, and sell ingredients to make menudo/pancita, posole, and masa for tamales there. There are non-Mexican cakes, sweets, and pastries there. The people who work there are very nice and speak mainly Spanish. My only complaint about this panaderia is that it only takes cash and not credit or debit cards at all. read more
