Incredibly disappointed. I have lived in Southold for 30 years and came to Hellenic for dine in and take out many times over the years but the last 3 times I have been so disappointed by the food. Not only have the prices gone up drastically but the portion sizes are so much smaller now. It was over $80 for 2 gyros and 2 half sized appetizers. Sad to say, I won't be coming back. read more

Wow. They have great food. When we went It was very busy, but our food came out in a timely manor. Our table shared some of their amazing appetizers. My son had the Pastitsio, which is a family favorite, he said It was *almost* as good as mine, so that is some high praise if I may say so myself! The saganaki was a hit, my mother in law had a huge platter of shrimp saganaki and It was INCREDIBLE. I had pork souvlaki and the pork was perfectly grilled. I don't love their Avgolemono, but I feel like It was just personal preference. It's a glorified diner. The prices are on the expensive side. It has a couple of Greek food items on the menu to cater to their large Greek clientele from Queens. I ordered the gyro sandwich deluxe and it arrived with soggy wet tomatoes and onions. When I picked it up to take a bite, a stream of of water drained out the bottom of the sandwich from the soggy tomatoes. The waitress had the nerve to tell us that was normal. C'mon how difficult is it to mess up a gyro sandwich. You can tell by looking into the kitchen thru the counter that they buy the frozen gyro meat instead of making it home made. Their "famous" house lemonade is nothing special. Mine was watered down with no taste. It must have been sitting in the pitcher of ice for a while and when the waitress poured it out, I got all watered down portion. My other guests ordered a cheeseburger and grilled cheese. The four of us just came off the Ferry from New London Ct. We caught the beginning of Dorian and were delayed around one hour. We stopped here at Hellenic, because we heard great things. We loved everything and when we head back to Ct. on Sunday, we are stopping here for dinner. Way to many items on the menu we want to try! Phenomenal. The best Greek restaurant I've eaten at. I live about an hour away, but it's well worth the trip. The North Fork is also gorgeous and quaint. It's best to go in the summer when you can sit outside. Also make sure to order a fresh-squeezed lemonade. You won't regret it! My favorite appetizer is the skordalia. Hellenic's is out of this world. I've tried to recreate this dish for years and haven't come close. The calamari is also very good, fried and served with skordalia as dipping sauce. I also like the taramasalata. Some people may feel it's too fishy for their liking, but it's great on grilled pita. I almost always get the open faced gyro with beef for dinner. It's huge (and delicious). The tzatziki is spot on! They're also the only place I've ever encountered that marinates their tomatoes and onions and it takes the gyro to a new level. The spanakopita is very good (you can get it as an app too). Make sure you have a piece of baklava for dessert. It's the perfect balance of flavors and large enough to split with another person. read more

This place is a travesty. I came here in 2009 with my daughter and got sick from the Gyro meat. Since I tend to be a little forgiving I came a few more times only to get sick over and over from their food. I am a Greek/Italian and have been eating Greek food my whole life. This is just pathetic. Also noticed if you are not close with the people who own the place dont expect to get good service. Couldn't wait to have Greek food. Buzz Kill. The atmosphere was lovely at the Hellenic's outdoor patio. Our waiter, whose ears were adorned (?) by thumb-tack sized diamond studs was without a glint of personality. He was also lacking in any apparent desire to be of service, more than taking an order. We started off with questions about the wine list. He flatly, unapologetically told us he knew nothing about any of the wines. Pity, as there were many from local vineyards. We took a guess, and did fairly well without help. Dinner started with an unremarkable beet salad - beets, sliced. Every dish that I had wanted to have as my "main" was not available. I found this out when I attempted to give my order to the waiter and he would reply "We're out of that." and then I'd have to start again. This happened 4 times. The lack of menu items would've been easier to swallow if he told us upfront what they were out of (practically everything, on a Wednesday night). My husband had the artichoke lamb: the meat was watery (How can that happen to meat?). I had the bass. Both were tasteless. We never saw our waiter again after our food arrived. A bus boy cleared the table, and we retrieved the check from the bus boy. The next morning we had a lovely breakfast in Greenport, (at Bruce's Cheese Shop) and shared our dinner woes with the waitress. Turns out, she too had been to the Hellenic also on the day we were there, and also had a very bad dinning experience. She suggested our "bejeweled" waiter's smoking pot during work may have impaired more than our service. read more

I've been going here for years, but in light of the whole "locavore" craze and being situated in the middle of farm country, you'd think they'd use fresh and local produce. The tomatoes they serve in salads and on my favorite dish -- the "Gyro Platter" -- are industrial strength hothouse tomatoes. I find it hard to believe that they can't strike a deal with a local farm or farmers that would be mutually beneficial. They seem to enjoy promoting local vineyards on their wine list -- why not farmers? Now, here's my hot tip for anyone who has room left for dessert (or wants to make room) ... order the "Galaktoboureko." It's basically a custardy chunk of goodness with buttery filo dough basted in a honey glaze. read more

We have been coming too green port for long time this was at one time a good place . Breakfast prices and dinner prices higher than Manhattan . I am a big fan of Greek food after growing up in an area in Massachusetts where there is a large Greek population. I was skeptical about trying this restaurant after having a bad experience at another Greek restaurant in Riverhead, NY. I've been to this location twice (once in the summer and once in January). The food has been consistent for both visits. The food is good, however, it doesn't have the authentic Greek restaurant taste as I was hoping for. The gyro meat is all beef (no lamb) but it is cooked well and seasoned nice. The rice that the gyro plate comes with is not the typical rice pilaf that you would expect from a Greek joint. It is yellow rice that looks like it belongs on a Spanish dish but tastes like it comes out of a boxed mix. However, The tazitki appetizer is spot on and the pita has a nice char on it. It's a hit for me. My fiancee is not a big fan of Greek food and usually orders the American items on the menu. Believe it or not the American food tastes better than their Greek dishes. The autmosphere in the summer is definitely better than the winter. In the summer you can sit outside on their very large patio or in their sunroom which is spacious and comfortable. This past visit in January we had to sit in their dining area which is very tight and crowded. There were only four parties in the dining room and it felt like we were all sitting on top of each other. The service is always friendly and fast. read more

Went here with the family (7 of us) after the beach. I have been coming out East since I was 5 years old and had never stopped here. Given the positive Yelp reviews and the almost always full parking lot, we decided to give it a try. BAD IDEA!!! Problem is we were expecting Greek food. Can't blame us since the place is called "Hellenic snack bar." We are Greek and live in Astoria, so there is some expectation of quality and flavors. The Greek salad had celery in it. That totally ruined the salad. I am not even sure they have celery in Greece. If they do, they def never put it in their salad!! This was not a good dining experience and noone should consider this an example of Greek cuisine. read more

The place is very clean and has the proper Greek accents. The staff is nice and greet you with smile & a happy hello. My wife and I shared a Greek salad and a gyro platter. Due to 2 large parties and a wedding, it took about 30 minutes to get our salad. The platter, as advertised on the menu, was a double meat portion. If that was double, I would be very disappointed in the single portion. They put the pita wedges under the steak fries (frozen not fresh) which is under the small portion of meat. They then pile on the tomatoes to give the illusion of a generous portion. The flavor are just ok, nothing special. It is a basic Greek diner that is overpriced. They have outdoor seating that is probably nice on sunny days. Not bad, not great but serviceable if you are hungry. To give an update, the restaurant was not, in fact, packed. It was merely half full. I also said the portion size is made to look generous by piling on cheaper ingredients. It is obvious that the owner is trying to cut cost by misleading his customers. It is not illegal to change perception by using cheaper ingredients but the meat portion was definitely too small for a "double portion" claim. My review was a fair assessment of the food and service. It wasn't bad and it wasn't great. To have the owner dismiss constructive criticism saying that everyone but me loves this place is disingenuous. Other reviews say the same thing. read more

As an update to my prior review, we went back to Hellenic this past week and had a much better experience - much like what I have become accustomed to. After my last visit, George did reach out to me very graciously and said to please give them another chance and to ask for him. I decided not to ask for George and to simply see how it went, without his direct intervention. I went at an off-time when the restaurant was relatively empty. We were seated promptly and the waitress was pleasant and answered our questions regarding certain menu items. Service was on-point and food was good. We ordered several vegetarian apps as our meal and they were all quite good. The Arnold Palmer (iced tea and lemonade) is really delicious - just wish they offered free refills. Anyway, I appreciate George's response to my yelp review and we will certainly return again to Hellenic. read more

You guys. This place is just the bomb!!! This place made Greek my favorite cuisine. It's just fantastic. My family and I have been coming here for decades, and always have a great time and end up loving the food. It's a family owned place so the service is very warm and friendly, like you'd expect in a neighborhood like this. First of all, you can't start off without their famous lemonade. Very fresh and equally refreshing. Foodwise, everything is just great. My favorite is the good ol' gyro (I get the platter, which gives you more than enough food). It is consistently delicious. Their appetizers like the spanakopita, saganaki, and greek salad are all great, and their baklava is so yummy. Pretty much anything you get here will make you leave with a full and happy tummy! :) The Hellenic is an old school staple here in the North Fork food scene, so be sure not to miss it! Great. Great service, great lemonade, great calamari. We ate here with my daughter and usually she is hard to please and only wants pasta but she was so happy. She even asked to come back because she loved the spanikopita and lemonade. I loved the calamari that was cooked perfectly. If i could i would give it 4.5 stars. Definitely worth trying. The Hellenic is a 'must stop' for anyone taking the Orient-New London ferry or playing golf at Island's End. It's been an institution since my childhood and I'm thrilled that it's still as good as ever. They're my benchmark for Greek food and have an expansive menu with friendly service to boot. I took my girlfriend here and as we examined the menu, she asked how I liked a number of things. The only problem was that every time I go here, I have the perfectly made Gyro sandwhiches. So good with just the best Tzatziki (usually on the side). Anyway, she took a flyer on the Spinich and Feta Pie (Spanakopolis or something crazy greek like that, I struggle with my memory) and it was not only huge, but delicious. I had the great fortune of helping her out with it and let's just say it almost upstaged my Gyro. Be sure to try their lemonade on a hot summer day, when you can sit outside on their large, covered patio. There's almost nothing better. read more

So delicious. my son also loved the chocolate milkshake. I must comment negatively however on their rampant use of styrofoam containers for both food and drinks. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services added Styrene along with eight more substances to its "known human carcinogen" or "reasonably anticipated to be carcinogen" lists over three years ago and we should all avoid supporting the production of these products and avoid eating from them - particularly with heated contents. but that was a damn good milkshake :) read more

We started off with appetizers with the intention of trying a gyro plate. We had the half order of calamari, a side of slow cooked beans, and the saganaki. Nothing was bad by any means, but nothing to make us crave more. The calamari is pretty bland and just a basic flour batter that needed S & P. The beans were slow cooked perfectly, however could have used a little more depth in the sauce and the saganaki was, well saganaki. The service was slow and lackluster, and a bit pricey $41 for 3 apps and 2 lemonade. The lemonade was very good though, perfect amount of sweetness. I would definitely go back and give them a try for the souvlaki platter or a gyro, but would stray away from the overpriced apps. read more

We were looking for a lunch spot out in North Fork and we happened to stumble upon this restaurant. No wait and plenty of outdoor and indoor dining area; especially when we had to drag a stroller with us. I ordered the chicken greek salad, which is pretty simple, but the ingredients were delicious and amazingly fresh. It made me wonder if they buy their ingredients from the local farms in the area. We also ordered their homemade lemonade, which is not your average lemonade. It's almost like a slush but very refreshing and not too sour. Prices are great for the amount of food you get. For some reason Monday on the North Fork is a challenge. Lots of places were closed. Some looked as they may not reopen even though it's the middle of June already. We decided to try The Halyard for our first time since it was a lovely night and The Halyard is right on LI Sound. No such luck, PRIVATE EVENT. So, on we went to an old reliable favorite: Hellenic Snack Bar which is always nothing short of amazing. We ate Al Fresco on their patio. It was good to see how busy they are. Maybe because all of the "Rookies" close on Monday? We ordered the Grilled Octopus appetizer special, tender and tasty. For entrees: Moussaka, perfectly prepared and a huge portion. The star of our meal was the grilled whole sea bass. A nice sized fish grilled to perfection as only the Greeks know how. The fish was large enough to feed three. We had lots of leftovers. Get to The Hellenic Snack Bar before the crowds descend on us. Make sure you have the home made lemonade. read more

Hands down the best restaurant on the North Fork and the best Greek Food I have ever had!!! Best Gyro period!!! This place has set a standard so high that we don't even attempt to eat Greek food anywhere else. Everything is freshly made and with fresh ingredients. Same owners since it opened in 1976 and they are still working in the restaurant to this day. We have been coming here since I was a kid and now I come with my kids. This place would get 5 stars if it was only a lemonade stand the food is really nothing extraordinary for a place that specializes in Greek food. I have to agree that the service is a little shitty trust me you won't be rushed but they tend to forget about you but as long as you are inside a server can't be too far away because it is not that big. I do have to say I remember the food and service being much better years ago but now I would only give the food + service 2 stars. The lemonade is just that good it's worth the stop get a couple of large ones to go or sit down quick and have an appetizer the pita bread and tzatziki is very good. A little side note ask for the tzatziki on the side as they like to put it on the pitas and this can cause them to get a little soggy especially is you are getting takeout. read more
