I am going to be as nice as possible about this monstrosity of a restaurant. Once upon a time I was a regular at Hemenways spent tons of special occasions here with my partner and family. And as you saw my previous review was 5 stars, boy have times changed. Hemenways once hired amazing servers, with class and respect. The service was so good- I would brag about how amazing the respect, service and professionalism was. What a freaking joke this had turned into. For this place to be held to the standard it once was, it has drastically declined and I wish I could put zero stars. Let's start off by saying as classy as a place this is, why are people allowed in sweatsuits. I mean full blow hoodies and all, once upon a time you HAD to dress up In order to get in here or you wasn't getting in. It was an unwritten rule but everyone knew, now you can come in here looking like you rolled out of bed and didn't even bother to brush your teeth. Let's get to the servers I encountered and boy they're so glad I didn't get names. So I chose this place for my birthday dinner (my actual birthday) there was about 10-13 of us total, I had 2 servers. My first server I must say was particularly not nice to my blended family. But was particularly nice to families who weren't blended. If you catch my drift. She constantly came over to ask if we were ready to order drinks, but never brought out bread that was asked for about 3 times. When she was giving us our specials of the night, she looked like she hated her job and us. So at this point I went to the manager James (he was nice, the only good part about this review ) and I told him I didn't appreciate her service and she was ruining my vibes and made my family uncomfortable, she was removed from our table and we were given someone else who was kind the whole time. Okay- here's the fun part. As the birthday girl don't you think my order of food should be correct out of everyone else's, wouldn't you make sure to do that? WRONG! Everyone else ordered something fancy, I got 1.25 pound lobster BOILED with asparagus that's it. My order comes out it's a stuffed lobster. How did you get my food wrong? It was the simplest thing, this is a lobster place correct? So as this was being put in front of me I said to the man excuse me that's not mine, his response in the most (snobby brat like attitude) DONT BLAME ME ITS MY FIRST DAY I GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS. At this point I could've took my whole family out and left, because the back to back ignorance to my family of color was incredibly DISGUSTING, and I am appalled with how we were treated. It gets better! Shall I keep going? So after my WHOLE family ate their meals and they were already bagged up, my meal finally comes out at this point I'm shaking, visible to all. I was so upset that my actual birthday was being messed up to the point nobody at Hemenways seemed to care. Not shocked! They bring out a "desert for the table, on the house" she puts it in the middle of the table, shouldn't you bring that to me? NOPE! What is even happening? Oh- and the lobsters they did mess up on they just said they were also on the house. But we were charged for on the bill, we didn't realize this the night of because I had so much anxiety from all the ignorance. So when I called the next day to explain my experience with a different manager. He spoke with the other manager and called me back. And said I will refund you the money we overcharged and I'll comp you some money. He made it sound real delightful, but don't forget we were charged for 2 lobsters that they messed up on and were told they were on the house. So that was removed from the bill and about 4 drinks that's it. So he said I'll comp you back 244.00 mind you the lobsters we got charged for alone were 140.00 total that we weren't supposed to be charged for so we got a lousy 104.00 comp when we easily brought in $900.00 + , and ruined my birthday. When I asked what would be done about ruining my night, he said 244 isn't enough? No sir 104.00 , racist servers, ignorant bus boys and terrible management aren't worth a lousy 104.00 comp back, maybe you should've told me to come and try again. No wonder they're always looking for severs online because they can't keep them. I wouldn't bother it's not what it used to be. Me and my 10-13 other family members will never come back here again. If your family is blended as well be careful. They pick and choose who they want to cater to. Hands down, this is a must visit if you're in Providence. The service is good, the food is fantastic and the atmosphere is cozy while remaining fine dining. My scallop dish had 7 perfectly cooked scallops! My cup of lobster bisque had a generous amount of meat, definitely more than a garnish. Our server, Theresa, was amazing - from knowledge of the menu and specials, to the detailed descriptions and great recommendations. The selections from the menu for our group included had oysters and clams from the raw bar as well as an assorted seafood platter. For the entrees we had the stuffed shrimp, Oscar style lobster, sea scallops and seafood casserole - and everyone walked away pleased. Presentation was good and taste was even better. This was a great spot to visit with my wife and daughter on a very hot Juneteenth last Wednesday. We arrived when the restaurant opened, and were the only patrons for several minutes before the lunch crowd started filing in. My 3-year-old daughter enjoyed the "Wikki Stix" toy that came with her meal, but she also got a hearty serving of Mac and cheese and mashed potatoes -- so much that we ended up having them boxed up and we finished them as a group later that afternoon. I was on a quest to try Rhode Island oysters, so I got the Shellfish Platter and it didn't disappoint. The oysters were so sweet and perfectly shucked. The platter also came with two lobster claws and a tail, littleneck clams, and shrimp cocktail. It was a ton of food. My wife got the "power lunch" with the Rhode Island clam chowder and the fish tacos -- both were excellent as well. Service was prompt, friendly, and attentive. Prices were reasonable, especially considering the high quality. This place is a gem through and through. read more

I really enjoyed this place and had a great dinner! Sat at the bar alone and had great service from the bar tenders. The restaurant is pretty bright and has an upscale feel to it. The fish on the menu looked so good I had a hard time deciding what to get, went with the salmon and loved every bite! I didn't feel rushed by the bartenders and they let me take my time since I was in no rush. The chocolate espresso mouse was good, but it was a bit hard. I prefer my mouse to be less frozen and more melt-in-your-mouth. But the flavor was there. Would recommend this place and would come back on another trip! read more

I hadn't been back to Hemenway's in years until recently and I've been back twice in as many weeks for lunch. Although the menu can be pricey, lunch is a great option as there are a few more budget friendly options. I enjoyed the fish tacos and fried chicken sandwich a lot. Both were well executed and flavorful (though I didn't think the chicken sandwich was spicy as indicated on the menu). As a side, I preferred the fries and found the fried zucchini chips to be exceptionally greasy. I'd definitely skip those in the future. Otherwise both experiences were great, and now that I am working nearby I am looking forward to many more visits to Hemenway's in the future! read more

Finally arrived for a 7:30pm birthday celebration. I requested their best seat. She made great suggestions, handled a picky eater with professionalism and grace. She had the bartender made a special drink of pineapple tequila with grenadine and a splash of pineapple juice. It was a candy lovers dream. Ordered the drink special which was awesome as well. I was underwhelmed at the crab cake portion but then overwhelmed at its taste. The paella was delicious with steamed clams, mussels, shrimp and scallops. It was a little spicy but not intrusive. Next time I want to try the grits and scallops. Enjoyed the caramelized cabbage immensely, it was roasted to perfection, seasoned and sauced with flavor. Kudos to the chef. Towards the end of our meal things slowed down. Took a while to get the dessert menu and then nothing appealed to us. Ended up with the chocolate flourless cake. Not a fan, but it was quite good with a hint of salt to pop the flavor. Yes, the food was very good at this white table cloth venue. Dress attire was very diverse. We reserved dinner at 6:30 and lucked out with street parking ( free after 4:00 pm) in front of the restaurant but there is a parking lot next door. We had a wonderful window seat which faced the bridge and river as the rowing gondola and small touring boats passed . Taking any pictures inside the rest cast a harsh redness to any pics. As for the food they ran out of steamed mussels after ordering at the onset of our dinner. But we had their delicious RI clam chowder which was a clear broth soup. It was flavorful and filling but not rich nor heavy compared to the typical white clam chowder. As for their entrees i had their local flounder . My wife had their Atlantic Cod. Our NY guest ordered the LOBSTER TORTELLONI and the YELLOWFIN TUNA. Both my wife and I enjoyed our fish which came with 2 sides. Our friends who had the LOBSTER TORTELLONI found the pasta and the cooked lobster served el dente. As for the YELLOWFIN TUNA it arrived beautifully sliced and plated but was disappointed that it sat on a warm bed of rice as it slowly cooked the raw YELLOWFIN TUNA. We had a wonderful waitress (Leila) who had a great balance of professionalism and yet personable. She was kind enough to bring over another waiter to help us with a nice bottle of wine to pair with our dinner. She helped bring our evening to a memorable high note as our meal came to a close. I wish I could give Hemenway Restaurant 3 1/2 stars but I don't have that option. The dining entirety was very nice. Nothing WOWED us. We had a family reunion lunch here recently to celebrate the birthday of a sibling and the restaurant handled it really well, especially letting us bring in a cake which they hid and served for us. The complementary dinner rolls were warm and delicious, and for starters we ordered crab cakes, calamari, and lobster bisque. All of which were Incredible- the calamari was perfectly done with a note of butter. The crab cakes had a wonderful flavor with a beautiful sauce that complemented them perfectly, and the lobster bisque was warm and rich, we absolutely adored it. For our mains we ordered the swordfish, lobster mac & cheese, stuffed lobster, and seafood casserole. When we all say our mouth's dropped, we mean it. The food had a beautiful presentation, my lobster Mac and cheese was rich and creamy with bits of lobster throughout, it was dreamy. My parents LOVED the seafood casserole and swordfish, and the stuffed lobster was devoured by the end of the meal. There truly is no complaints- it was amazing!! Lastly, the gorgeous view of the sound and restaurant tied the experience together. Could not have asked for a better server! Each of us tried something different and loved it! I had the seafood casserole, which I will admit, was a lot different than what I thought it would be. Almost like a creamy/cheesy soup rather than a baked casserole, but absolutely delicious nonetheless. Just be aware that this is not a casual place, even for lunch. We were all in casual wear from driving and I could see the eyes just starring at us as we walked in. At least pants and polo are necessary to feel comfortable there. We went here on a business interview and the place was amazing. I started with the clam chowder (regular, not RI way) and it was thick and creamy. The flavors of everything really stood out. It all tasted fresh and delicious. This was basically a meal in itself. For my entree, which I couldn't eat much of after the soup, was the paella. Very good and enjoyed every bite. We made a last minute reservation for our 3rd wedding anniversary and we were not disappointed. We were surprised to see rose petals on the table, which was a nice touch. We skipped the appetizers and went straight for the entree. I had the herb roasted chicken with potatoes and green beans (not a fan of asparagus). The chicken was well cooked and beans were nice and crisp. I don't usually order chicken at restaurants, but this was a nice exception. My husband ordered the baked dish of the day and throughly enjoyed the bass and the rice side.
