I was very pleased to have been able to get a reservation for Thanksgiving dinner. My party chose this restaurant because we like it, and they also offered a special Thanksgiving menu. When we arrived, the host greeted us and kindly offered to take our coats. We were quickly sat at a gorgeous table opposite the bar, which allowed us to look over the restaurant. Beyond, there are large glass windows that provide sweeping views of the Providence skyline and riverfront. We promptly met our server Ethan who was more than helpful. He was attentive, knowledgeable, and able to answer any question we had about the restaurant or menu. We began our meal with a bottle of white wine. While the bottle itself was nothing special, it accompanied our meal very well. We ordered local oysters to start. They were from Westerly and Narragansett, RI; and then more from another place. They were delicious as oysters always are. I was very pleased that they were served with two oyster forks (there are still places that struggle with this... haha!). We continued with the Yellowfin Tartare. It was delicious and very refreshing. For our meals we had the Karen Elizabeth Sea Scallops and the Local Monkfish. The scallops were soft and buttery, and paired perfectly with the cauliflower and beet in the dish. The Monkfish was flakey and flavorful. Overall this was a wonderful meal. I was not the most thrilled about going out on the holiday, and Hemenway's completely turned it around. It has an extensive menu.. and although their specialty is seafood.. they offer exceptional non seafood options! The service was exceptional... and the food was too.. the atmosphere is wonderful and they have an outside seating area which is nice and will be great when it finally warms up here in Providence. We ordered the 2lb baked stuffed lobsters and they were stuffed with the lobster meat from the lobster and also scallops, crabmeat and shrimp Wow! .. It was fabulous! My husband and I went here on a week night and wow the food did not disappoint. I felt a bit under dressed in jeans although others in the restaurant were wearing jeans. We were seated within one minute of arriving, greeted by our server within four minutes and had drinks at the table within five minutes. I came to this restaurant 5 years ago during my first trip to Providence and I had fond memories of trying the paella and the mushrooms. I was able to make a last-minute reservation, and I'm glad I did -- the restaurant was absolutely packed on a Saturday night. It's a really lively, bustling atmosphere. The highlight from Hemenway's was the complimentary bread rolls -- super fresh, hot, chewy, pillowy bread that pairs perfectly with a soft creamy butter with flaky sea salt. I would come back just for this. Other food item reviews - Seafood paella ($32): Tender seafood. Rice was a bit too al dente for me, but otherwise tasty. - RI Mushrooms ($8): Good flavor, good variety of mushrooms. Would have preferred more crisp. - Steamed mussels ($16): Well cooked but didn't like the flavor that much (sweet onion flavor) - Raw shellfish platter ($72): The oysters were the best part. The clams were a bit fishy and the shrimp was a bit tough. I would just get oysters next time. - Strawberry basil margarita ($17): Tasted pretty watered down, wouldn't get again. We had a great experience at Hemenway's. The scallops wrapped in bacon along and the baked stuffed shrimp were amazing. Service was outstanding as well. Amazing food and great service, never disappointed. Freshest seafood, oysters were to die for!

Waited 20 minutes for our table only to be seated at a high top in the bar area. A busy Saturday so okay, but we should have been warned about the bar seating when I made the reservation. Ordered wedge salad, red snapper crudo and scallops which oddly all came out at the same time, but even that would have been okay if the food was as advertised. It was not. The crudo dish flavor was crisp and bright but half of the fish was sinewy and couldn't be chewed. The wedge of iceberg was dull and wilted and tinged brown around the edges and the dressing was completely soaked into it as if it had been prepared 24 hours+ ahead and stored in the fridge. The scallops were tasty but served atop a cup of mashed peas. This is fine if you enjoy peas, but we don't and asked up front for a substitute to which the chipper but dismissive server assured us, "oh the mashed peas are just a garnish" ...........What the heck??? We finished the meal with the baked Alaska for two which felt like a carvel cake you get at the grocery store with a very long shelf life. Insult to injury was a glass of Prosecco which arrived almost but not completely flat as if I got the last serving from a bottle that had been open for 2 days. Any other restaurant and I would have returned it without worry but after dealing with the resistant waitress whose marching orders appeared to be defer/deflect/deny, I just let that go. Overall a very disappointing experience, more like elevated fast casual dining. You can do way better in this town. read more

I sampled several things from the new menu. Lobster roll, caviar with waffles and bread pudding plus a mocktail. The lobater roll was delicious with a delicate but spicy aioli, the caviar with waffles was my favorite. The caviar is really perfect and the baby waffles (instead of customary pancakes) is so unique and delicious. I would have eaten a whole meal of just the waffles! Simply put Amazing; the food, service, ambiance, all of it. (100% recommend, attire is something to look out for dinner. Lunch business casual I recommend) First the FOOD phenomenal. The Calamari is delicious. It's not oily it's quite refreshing with various jalapeños with it. Spiciness is spot on, just the right amount of kick. The paella is harmonious, the seafood and a hint of spice and sweetness from the choriso. The Lobster tortellini is wonderful very filling. The Lobster roll has cabbage in it and the texture addition is great. The seasoning on it was great ! And the bread don't get me started The beautiful SERVICE. She was so kind and patient with us. Wonderful person. The AMBIANCE, its floor to ceiling windows give a great view outside. Natural light is always a best friend. The seats are booths or table and seats. Came here for a show at Trinity. We were seated quickly, and water was provided. Ran through the specials, all good so far. Bread came and it was four pieces of warm bread and butter. It was above average but no more than that. I have had worse and much beter. We ordered the RI calamari and it was good, crispy and hot. Portion was well sized. I ordered the flounder and she the lobster tortellini. The flounder was wonderful, flaky and buttery. The Swiss chard was way over cooked and very bland. There was some other potato side dish that was just odd? Her tortellini was fairly horrid. The pasta was tough enough to need a knife. The lobster was boring. The sauce was decent but a very average dish. Overall for the price of the meal not worth it at all. I'd avoid til they fix the kitchen. read more

Tuna tartare: The tuna tartare was paired with delicious crispy seaweed chips and a great wasabi cream. However, we found the other sauce to be too sweet. Whole fish: The whole baked fish was sea bass and was very fresh and tender. However, we think it would have benefited from being offered off the bone. We also think it needed a lemon butter sauce on the side. Scallops: The scallops were delicious and seared to perfection! Food: We've been here multiple times over the years and sadly their food has gone downhill for us. Tonight, they overlooked the scallops, salmon and shrimp. Their RI mushroom side used to have Serrano ham with it. That is no more and it lacked flavor and pizzazz. Their baked shrimp doesn't have much crab in it so if that's what you're looking for, then have it at your own risk. Service: the staff is always great here and do their best. I've been coming here with Mr. Seabass for years, where the food is always on par but this time it was different. His fish of the day left him satisfied, whereas my steak ended up in the Providence river. I mean holy guac, it was torture just to get it down but then for it to come back up? Came here for a celebration dinner - the ambiance and food was on point. Very elegant vibe inside. Our server, unfortunately I do not remember his name, but he was from NY and gave exceptional service. He also suggested recommendations that we would enjoy and not end up ordering to much. It looks like the entrees sometimes change according to what's seasonal, so I don't know the exact name of the salmon dish. But I do recall it had a butternut squash purée and caramelized onions on top. It was delicious and fresh. I also LOVED the paella. I normally never eat mussels or clams, but in the dish it was well cooked and so flavorful. There was also no fishy/seafood smell. Personally, I believe the lobster Mac n cheese is a bit overrated taste wise although looks wise can be cool. It's just not the creamy, cheese Mac n cheese you'd go for. The Brussel sprouts and salad was a nice accompaniment, but nothing special. That being said, for the service, quality of food, and ambiance - I would come here again. Highly recommend visiting if you're around the area. They have a few sister restaurants as well that might be worth a shot. read more

My friends and I came here to eat during our quick visit to Providence. We had an amazing experience overall with every aspect. First, the service and hospitality were great. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, giving us great opinions and letting us know suggestions and specials of the day. They went above and beyond by even letting us try the flavor of one of the dish's sauces prior to ordering to confirm if we would be happy with our suggestion. From the complimentary bread, to the great appetizers and entrees, and down to the dessert, everything was delicious. We especially enjoyed the mussels and bacon wrapped scallops. The new england clam chowder was great as well. From the entrees, we ordered the salmon with squid ink linguine, lobster roll sandwich, scallops, and paella. You can't go wrong with any of the options. We were sat a little before sunset and the ambiance was quiet and intimate. It got busier during dinner time but the staff were still very attentive. This was a nice place to stop by for a bite in Providence on our New England trip. The food was definitely very gram worthy and we had a lot of good RI fare including stuffies and lobster. The RI chowder was good but was very different than what I was used to and I'm not sure I would get it again. The lobster mac and cheese was very filling and the cheese was really good. All the lobster is cut up and mixed into the food. Was cooked very well but it did take a long time for this dish to be prepared and to come out. read more

The chowder was hot and super delicious! The calamari was presented well and very good. I had the Georges Bank Sea Scallops, and was overall pleased with the dish, but it wasn't very hot, and lukewarm seafood isn't very appealing regardless how nice the presentation is. They also pack in the restaurant rather full, so if you are avoiding crowded spaces, keep this in mind. Our waiter Robert and the rest of the staff were on top of it all for our party. Most importantly, the seafood is second to none. We were visiting family in RI so they took us to their favorite place, Hemenway's! It's a warm space, with classic seafood/steakhouse vibes. We had a reservation that was running about 20-30 min late. Once we sat down, they informed us they put in an assorted hot appetizer platter for us as a way to thank us for our patience, which was such a nice surprise. I've never gotten that sort of service in LA lol. At this point, our party of four was pretty hungry! Here's what we ordered: - Rhode Island Clam Chowder, 3.5 stars: a lighter, broth- based clam chowder. it was tasty but not to my personal preference. i prefer a thicker chowder that would make lactose intolerants quiver in their boots but you know, when in rome! - Assorted hot appetizer platter, 4.5 stars: this included bacons wrapped scallops (best I've ever had), calamari, and "stuffies" (stuffed clams). Out of the three, the stuffies were my least favorite. It was a pretty large portion, definitely enough for 4 people - Shellfish Tower, 5 stars: freshest of the fresh and huge! delicious oysters, briney clams, plump shrimp, two lobsters, and crab meat! perfect for any seafood lover. plenty of seafood to share for 4 people - Seafood Casserole, 4 stars: creamy, tasty, and seafood is nicely cooked - Pan Roasted Salmon, 4 stars: salmon was a smidge overcooked for my liking but had a nice crust and was tasty - Karen Elizabeth Scallops: my favorite out of the entrees! delicious grits and 5 nicely cooked scallops Overall, a delicious seafood dinner with perfect service. Exceptional lunch with a park view. The other view was of the river! Nice choice of views. We sat indoors and it certainly feels like an upscale seafood restaurant which it is. The wedge salad was done well and very tasty. We also tried their stuffies which is seasoned bread, chorizo, chopped clams, casino butter and bacon. Again they did this exceptionally well! Service is impeccable. Kimberly knew the menu and was attentive. Last but not least was their calamari. May be the best anywhere. Didn't have to put tartar sauce or anything else on it.
