Really enjoyed this place the first time I came by with my friends great food, atmosphere and service. I came back super excited to enjoy an early dinner expecting that same service before and turned out to be pretty disappointing. I raved about this place to my friends and they left unsatisfied and upset. Kind of embarrassing. The hostess was really nice told us 30-40min wait but got a call within 15mins which was outstanding. But, the downside There was barely any service staff that checked up on us, didn't refill our waters, did not check up on us if our food was ok and it took a really long time to get our bills, we had to wave over a host. the server had rolled her eyes at us when we politely asked for napkins and never return back till we had to pay. Waitress was great. Food.... Not bad for bar food. Nice pleasant atmosphere. The Fish and Chips were seviceable as were the potato skins.

First, they tried to seat us at the very top floor (the roof top patio on top of the rooftop patio), an empty drafty wooden box of a room completely void of atmosphere. I never get when restaurants do this, obviously people pay for the atmosphere when dining out and the regular patio was full of seating, why shove people in some forgotten corner unless you're packed? Second, they have a pizza for $18/19 dollars. Suggested that my wife not order it as it was the only pizza they had on menu which is a red flag. She orders it anyway. It arrived with the cheese unmelted, we asked for it to be heated longer (note we are not fussy people). It comes back with the cheese still looking separated but browner. It's clear at this point that Hemingway's Restaurant serves it's customers frozen pizza. I don't mean pizza that they make and then freeze, which would still suck, but i mean they went to the grocery store frozen food section bought a cerophane wrapped frozen pizza, located next to the hot pockets, and heated that up for their customer. A true staple of the neighbourhood, my parents went here when they were my age, and that tradition continues to live on! Despite being smack in the centre in the posh Yorkville neighbourhood, this place is a down-to-earth, fun respite from the upscale surroundings. The actual restaurant is pretty remarkable, lot's of different 'venues' for seating. On a late summer evening, we opted for the patio upstairs, which features lots of twinkling lights and fun decor. The patio is massive and loud with lots of tables and lots of people. The food and drinks were somewhat reasonably priced, considering the location, I don't recall anything being standout amazing however. We ordered the onion petals, some sort of steak bites, onion rings, and some of my friends ordered wings. Everything was good, but not particularly amazing. The service was kind, one server accidentally knocked over a half-full beer on the table and replaced it in full, which was really nice. The reason for the 4-stars is really for the atmosphere, the patio is really something special, and it's smack in the middle of Yorkville, which is really lovely on any occasion. You don't need to dress up or empty your wallet to enjoy a night out at this casual spot, which seems to be a favourite among many. read more

Came here for the second time on my four-day, inaugural trip to Toronto, for my friend's birthday lunch. The staff here are incredibly friendly and the food is awesome! So much to choose from and great vegetarian options. I got the pie of the day today and it did not disappoint--perfect for the bitter cold we've been having! I had the fried chicken sandwich on Friday and loved it as well. I will definitely be back when I'm in town again. We were seated on the rooftop with no wait on a Saturday night, which was great. The waitress was attentive and nice. There was a mix up in the kitchen with my order causing me to eat after the rest of my party was already done. It was fine though as we were enjoying the atmosphere. We live in the area and we have been going to Hemingways for probably 25 years. Often I order the Pad Thai as its always been good for a pub. Hemingways Pad Thai has always been a nicely spicy and a generous serving of Shrimp and Chicken previously it had a wonderful balance of curry and other spices. Last night the Pad Thai was colourless and tasteless. I did look around and saw other Pad Thai plate and they were also seemed to be the tasteless concoction I was served. Management needs to check-in on the Pad Thai. On the other hand Hemingways is still a wonderful local pub and the service is great. Just hoping the Pad Thai is reviewed. read more

Man have I got a lot of memories from this place. So many afternoons on the patio. Drinking beers in the bright sun and afternoon splendour. One beautiful sunny day, after a fun round of golf at Don Valley, my boy Paul and I found our way to the patio to knock back a few beers. It was lovely. I even hit my first hole-in-one on the Golden Tee machine. We kept drinking and drinking. Eventually we made a call and got a big bag of drugs and kept partying well into the night. My friend and I went to Hemingway's Restaurant and Bar on Saturday, June 15, 2024 to watch the Euro Cup games and we were truly satisfied by the excellent level of service. Our waiter, Pasha, was extremely friendly, hard-working and attentive. He continuously ensured that we were satisfied with our meals and that our new requests were quickly fulfilled. The ambiance was lively and the ladies' restroom was very clean. We ordered the outback breakfast, chicken fingers, and a chocolate brownie with ice cream and we were overly pleased. While I did participate in that scenario, I found Hemingway's home. After dinner I passed this way and chilled at the bar for a pint or four. The beer was good but what I experienced was a true, neighborhood pub. Everyone knows your name and genuinely asks how you've been. The beer is cold, the fish and chips rock out with their cod out and the scene is young old, hip to hip replacement. Everyone comes and all are welcome. Oh, try the Pad Thai too. Popped in for an impromptu lunch on the patio on a sunny Sunday afternoon. It was a bit late so we got a seat right away but I'm guessing this is a pretty busy spot at peak weekend hours. We ordered the chowder and green salad (both were good) and a jerk chicken bowl with garden salad. The chowder had plenty of clams and good flavour. We also liked the fact that the broth was creamy but lighter than the typical floury thick stuff you get. Taste and consistency were both very good. The chicken bowl was not what I expected. Order a Tex-mex bowl anywhere else (whether it's a Resto or just Chipotle) and you get a bowl. Here it's a shallow baking dish with a few chicken cubes. And no jerk flavour. In hindsight it's a bit of a weird mash up of Jamaican-Tex-Mex anyways don't even know why I ordered it. They also melted a layer of cheese on top which I didn't really like. Missing ingredients included corn and cilantro which to me are critical for any bowl of this type. However they gave me a good amount of guacamole (fresh) and some nachos. That was unexpected. Now for the piece de resistance. My salad came with some brown salad dressing in a cup. Thinking it was balsamic I poured it on my salad and started eating. Hmm... that tastes funny. Another bite and a third bite, and I kept thinking this is the oddest salad dressing I've tasted. Yet somehow it tasted good! I asked my wife to try it and she dipped her fork in the cup of remaining dressing and had a taste. She told me it was gravy! Somehow the kitchen mixed up the balsamic dressing (also brown) with the gravy! But I think they've stumbled on the latest food trend. It's salad for people who DON'T want to eat healthy. Hey why not add some cheese curds and call it salad-poutine? Anyways I had a good laugh and a they brought me a new full size salad with dressing this time. I had the corned beef hash from the brunch menu plus a fairly good bargain of $7.oo for a Mimosa; good was great; lunch mate had the club sammy with fries which was also great. The atmosphere was cool -we dined inside near the back. No complaints what so ever. read more

When you let the world know that you are going to serve turkey dinner on Thanksgiving Day, you better be ready for the consequences. Which is what Hemingway's didn't quite do. My suggestions: 1. Schedule more wait staff. It took a long time for the server to get to our table to take our orders. 2. What happened to complimentary bread? Especially when we have to wait around half an hour for our meals. I was dying of starvation and had to ask the server for something to tie me over until dinner came. 3. Have enough turkey! They ran out of turkey by 730pm when the restaurant was packed with diners. Poor server had to go around the tables to break the bad news and ask diners to pick something else from the menu. 4. More gravy please! Some of us were lucky enough to get the last few plates of turkey dinner. General agreement was that the portion of food was good, but there needed to be more gravy! Hemingway's major appeal is it's prime location right next to the Bay TTC exit, so outside winter time is kept to a minimum, which is my personal goal on a cold winter night! The venue has three floors and different pockets on each one, which offer slightly different atmospheres in terms in coziness and noise. I went for a drinks date, so we opted for the quieter front section on the second floor - I could see the TTC exit from the window, ya know, in case I needed to runaway from my date!!! They had a pretty standard beer list, but a few tasty options. We didn't do food, so I can't comment on that front. Seemed like typical pub grub. Our server was super friendly and prompt. We sat on the second level outside in the sunshine and the menu had a few gluten and dairy free options. I ordered the Paella and it was fantastic! It tasted amazing and was really filling. Hemmingway's is great, because it simply is what it is. There are multiple floors with multiple vibes and you can really choose your own adventure with it. There's a sidewalk patio, a more closed off sports bar area, and levels upons levels of rooftops patios! Nice place to go for a drink or pitcher in the summer with anyone from your lover to your parents. The menu is standard pub fare, done standardly but hot and crispy and fresh! For how busy this place is, I've always found service to be surprisingly on point and you can get in and get out pretty easy. On the main patio where I usually am seated, the christmas lights make for a pretty ambiance and there's chatter all around. When in Yorkville, this is a great option for the more casual evenings! read more

The flavors were great, though I felt the pieces of chicken were a bit too large, so that there wasn't quite enough sauce to cover everything comfortably. Had lunch here today and it was fabulous. Started with the Gumbo soup; very authentic with two kinds of okra; seasoned appropriately. My main course was the Jambalaya which had plenty of shrimp, sausage and fish. It was just a tad spicy-perfect. Again like the gumbo it was very authentic & some of the best jambalaya I've had since I visited New Orleans years ago. Knowing how much preparation goes into jambalaya, I was thoroughly impressed with the outcome. The shrimp was firm, not soggy. The sausage was thinly sliced with a slight kick to it. Not too hot, not bland. The fish was also firm and not slimy or mushy. A truly delightful dish. I had the caramel brownie cheesecake to top it off. It was a piece of cheesecake with a chocolate brownie crust and small squares of brownie on top, chocolate syrup drizzle and three dollops of real whipped cream surrounding it. Very tasty. Service was on point. Food came in a reasonable time. I sat on the upstairs terrace under a yellow shade ( which may have given a tint to my photos). Fans kept it breezy and comfortable. From the outside, one can't tell that the place is actually quite big with 2 floors of sitting area. We were seated in an area with plastic tables and balcony chairs. Definitely not comfortable at all. Food - Their famous clam chowder was salty; nothing to be amazed about. Hardly any clams, just chopped up veggies. And the worst was the stale bread that was hard and cold. Yuck!! Not worth the $8 and it shouldn't be in the menu. I had the stuffed meatballs with spaghetti and surprisingly it came very hot and it was flavourful. So at least they made me happy on this one. My partner had their daily special of jerk chicken lasagna with Caesar salad. Not a great combination and he didn't enjoyed it as much as my own meal. Lastly, the service was slow and confusing for around 30mins to have split bills. Other pub-like places do it automatically or kindly without a fuss. Verdict. JH comes here regularly for South African nights, but this was my first time and I was far from impressed. We sat down, and no one came to take our order so we had to ask someone to send one of the servers. I get that it was busy, as there was an event: the Rugby World Cup Trophy Tour, but it looked like no one worked here. I got the Peach Mint Lemonade but it was very clearly only lemonade. Not sure what happened to the peach. The drink was good though at least. I ordered the perogies and ceaser salad. My partner got denied entry because he didn't have a QR Code for his vaccination. He explained that he got his vaccine before he got his health card - so he's unable to get a QR code online. The guy checking the reservations was rude and dismissive, and walked away while my partner was trying to explain his situation. We're triple-vaxxed, and complied with all the guidelines. Over my lifetime, I probably have eaten is some 4500 or more restaurants on five continents. I had dinner at Hemingways with my wife and a friend lasst night. It was one of the worst three or four dining experiencess I have ever had. This includes eating with nomads in the African desert or in collective farms in Siberia. The major problem but not the only problem wass the ambience. First, the sound level in the restaurant was so loud that all the patrons on the first floor had to scream to be heard across the table. The unfortunate waiting staff had to go to each side of the table. to hear the orders and even then had to ask the patrons to yell so they could hear. The single live musician instead of singing to his guitar was yelling and not only was he frequently out of tune so was his guitar. It is not that I have never heard loud music. I play in a 100 person orchestra and I have been to raves, etc. The sound level was considerablly louder. When I asked the manager if he would ask the singer to take a break after more than an hour of yellling at the top of his voice, he refused tellling me that it was good for the restaurant vibe. Second, it took over an hour for the food to arrive from the original time of order. Then, when it arrrived my wife's chicken wriap had no chicken in it as far as we coulld tell. When she complained they were willling to remake the wrap but it would take what they thought was considerable time. My wife decided that given the sound levels and that we had already been screamed at for two hours, she would just have some soup so that we could leave. Third, to be fair the food that we had -my friend's chicken dish and my ceasar salad were adequate. The wait staff tried within the environment to be helpful but the manager had no interest in making the resstaurant a place to dine. I would never recommend it for anyone wanting to have a meal. read more

I can't say I had high expectations for this place, given its rating right here on Yelp, however the last few good reviews and the fact that everyone else in my group wanted to go to this particular restaurant, made me hope for more. There was nothing to be excited about, simply because the food is pretty blah - horrible fries (I really have to put emphasis on how horrible they were), and a run of a mill burger (despite a fancy name - Kiwi Lamb Burger). Had to wait for a long time to get our bill - doesn't score points in my book, but doesn't affect my star rating. The place is cozy, the prices are very un-Yorkville like, so the saving grace of this place could be stopping by for a quick beer. Won't repeat if I don't have to. read more
