I am so disappointed. I wrote a 3 star review for The Rub, and then tried Hen Quarter not realizing it's the EXACT SAME FOOD. I just want some ribs that don't burn my lips, mac and cheese with real, melty cheese, and a side of corn bread. But have yet to find a place in northern Virginia that meets the mark. Attached is a picture of my ribs, mac and cheese and fries meal. Same issues as with The Rub: ribs were too spicy for my liking (even though I asked whether they were before placing my order, and now I have heartburn), mac and cheese was noodles in pale yellow liquid (this time had bread crumbs on top but that didn't help), and fries were limp with way too much paprika (manager, how about giving customers the option of with or without paprika). We went to Hen Quarter for brunch with another couple. I chose it based off of reviews and the fact that they had the closest thing to "bottomless mimosas" in the area. $23.95 per person and 35 cent refills after that so it's not truly bottomless, but reasonable. The place itself is very nice, decor is inviting but unfortunately they sat us next to a huge party of about 20 people who were super loud and directly next to a window where the sun was shining right in our eyes and there were no shades. The food was pretty good, although overpriced but that's to be expected for the area. My biggest gripe was service though. I have no clue what our servers name was because he didn't introduce himself. He was very quiet and mostly non existent. We really couldn't get our monies worth with the mimosas because he barely gave us refills. We asked about getting chilled shots and he said he would ask the manager and then never gave us an answer. He completely forgot my husband's drink at one point. The other weird part of our brunch was when a female waitress came over and claimed she was taking over for our server which we were glad about, then she never came back after that! Polar opposite experiences for food and service at Hen Quarter, making our brunch experience very unenjoyable. Food was delicious but service was left wanting. One of our appetizers was fried green tomatoes and we found a hair in one of the tomatoes. It was a long blonde strand and our entire party has dark hair so it came from either kitchen or service staff. We alerted the waitress and it took 15 minutes to bring a new plate and new order of tomatoes. There was so apology from the waitress or manager and nothing was comped. Wholly unacceptable since this issue was ever acknowledged - staff merely said "we will bring you a new plate." Further when we got the check there was an automatic 20% gratuity applied for a "large party." Our group was 5 people and the online brunch menu specifies that "Also add 20% gratuity will be added for parties of 8 or more." Two issue here: (1) we were not a large party since we were only 5 people and should not have had this charge; and (2) the serve in no way warranted a forced 20% gratuity. We were here on a Friday night around 5:30 p.m. At that time of day, the place wasn't too busy so we were immediately greeted and seated. We were given a nice, private booth across from the bar. The bartender was our server. She was friendly, prompt and efficient. We started with drinks. I had a "watermelon patch" which consists of: Tito's vodka, muddled watermelon, lemon, mint & basil". The bartender did an awesome job mixing this drink. All the flavors came through clearly. I really enjoyed this drink and was sure to tell her. My husband had a beer (forget which kind). For my main course, I had the "HQ special" which consists of: "two pieces of our HQ fried chicken, mashed potatoes, collard greens, biscuit, honey butter". I asked for white meat chicken and was gladly accommodated. The coating was crispy and flavorful. However, the chicken breast was a bit on the dry side. When ordering white meat, that tends to happen more often than not. As long as it isn't totally dried out, I don't object. The chicken wing was nice and moist, at least. I liked their collard greens as they had some bacon in it which amped up the flavor and overrode the bitterness that sometimes accompanies collard greens. The mashed potatoes were clearly made from scratch. The biscuit was big, fluffy and moist. Needless to say, this is a filling meal! My husband had the Southern fried pork chop" which consists of: "southern fried 12 oz. chop, mashed potatoes, collard greens, poblano sauce". This was his first time having a fried pork chop---and he liked it. He said that the pork chop came out properly cooked and moist plus he thought the breading on it had good flavoring. As for the poblano sauce, he said that it barely registered. He, too, liked the mashed potatoes. As he isn't a fan of collard greens, he wished the dish had a different veggie. I pointed out to him that he could have asked for a substitution. In the end, he said he would have this dish again. They had some nice sounding desserts but we were too full to even consider trying them. As we ate, they got busier with the majority of the customers heading upstairs, including a huge party. When it comes to getting there, if you take Metro and don't feel like walking from the King Street station, The Old Town trolley (which is free) will leave you right across the street---at the corner of King and Columbus. read more

I am surprised to see so many positive recent reviews. I have been to Hen Quarter several times for both brunch and dinner. Today's brunch was so disappointing. First, the menu changed and many of the delicious options like the donuts and friend toast are gone. While the crab Benedict was good conceptually, the poached eggs were over done and the potatoes were cold. I would have told my server, Ed, but he disappeared. We could not find him. He never came back to check on us until he came back to give us the check, which we weren't ready for, we actually wanted a little more coffee. But by that point, we decided to cut our losses. It makes me sad to give HQ a bad review but I know what it used to be like. read more

This was my third visit to Hen Quarter, and probably my most disappointing. I firmly believe that it has to do with the management team, which is unfortunate because this place has such great food. Let me also say, not everything about this experience was negative, the food here is still good. When we first arrived we were greeted and sat at the bar while we waited for our reservation. Our bar tender was nice, but seemed as though she may have been high. What seemed to be the manager assisting behind the bar looked as if he had no interest in being there. Not a great appearance coming from a member of leadership. Once we were seated our waitress came right over, she was super sweet and got us started with our bottomless mimosas. We did the buffet, which like I said has good options (favs were the fried chicken, collard greens, pork sausage). However the Buffett didn't seem well maintained. Certain items weren't replenished, items seemed like they'd been sitting out for awhile, and I found a hair in my Mac and Cheese. I get this happens, but it's not ok, and makes me wonder how the back of house is being managed after seeing the lack of engagement from the one manager that we saw. After finding the hair we asked for a manager, and a different manager came to speak to us. He apologized and said he would take that off the bill. Obviously appreciated, but wasn't the reason for telling him about it. The good thing is that they did remove that entire dish of mac. The other disappointing part of this experience was seeing how one of the other managers was treating one of the other tables. You can tell they were all friends, and were receiving extra attention from this manager. It wasn't so much that he was engaging with that table, it was more so that there was so much else going on that he could have been assisting with to help with the chaos that was going on. We did bring this up to another manager, and things seemed to improve on that front. As I stated earlier the management team needs work at this location. I think with additional training and a better focus on quality staffing this place can be a winner. I truly hope this sheds light on some of the operational opportunities. I haven't given up on Hen Quarter, because I do love the food. I'll give it another shot in the future. read more

My son had no table space to eat. Mind you there was more than one table empty at that time. Thankfully the server was nice to notice we had no space and moved us to a roomier table. I asked for coffee and didn't get it until way after my entree came out, and even then, I didn't get the cream I asked for so I still couldn't drink my coffee until my meal was basically done and the coffee was lukewarm. When you enter the building, if you want a typical restaurant feel with more menu variety, go up the stairs and ask to be seated. The eating space downstairs is more of a fast-food vibe. I had the deviled eggs (topped with bacon) as an appetizer and the chicken & waffles as a entree. The deviled eggs didn't hit the desired spot, but they were okay. I ate most of them. I'd give them a 3/5. The chicken and waffles were delicious and super filling! I could not eat the entire portion. I was able to select the pieces of chicken that I wanted, and when they came out, they were seasoned to perfection. This is the second time I have ordered these and they did not disappoint. Fried Chicken is good but I wasn't impressed with the southern scramble (just an omelette) or the sticky table and dirty side plates.

We enjoy this place. The staff are always very warm and welcoming and the food is good. But every time we go they make us feel bad for not making a reservation. It's a chicken restaurant not a 5 star place. Yes it's small and yes I understand a reservation is ideal, but hey we can at 530, and only one other table was filled... Maybe it's this area but paying $100 for one adult and two kids to eat, and none of us had the $2.75 soda or $3 juice, we had water and STILL had a $100 check... So please stop making me feel bad with your intentional comment about how it's okay this time, you will go ahead and let me have one of your tables, but next time please make a reservation.... What a darling brunch spot in Alexandria! I was craving fried chicken & waffle, and heard such great things about the rendition here so I knew I had to get it. The dish had a chicken thigh and leg, with very satisfying crispy skin. The chicken itself was juicy and quite tender, and benefited from being on the bone. I liked the savory cheddar, corn and scallion waffle, too. It was more cheddar forward than corn or scallion as I couldn't taste the latter two, but still fluffy and crispy. The whipped honey butter on top was perfect. I also quite appreciated that Hen Quarter had crystal hot sauce, which is one of my favorite hot sauces and this was the first time actually seeing it at a restaurant! It seemed that most people were taking advantage of the bottomless brunch, which looked quite tempting. But I was committed on my fried chicken & waffle, and left full and happy nonetheless. We wound up stopping in here after we couldn't get a table for 5 elsewhere. Wowza! So glad we came here! Being southern born with a family of southerners, this place was a huge hit with the family. They were raving out this meal all weekend. So much goodness! The space is small-ish. There's a small bar and few tables downstairs and then an upstairs area with more seating. After managing to score a table, this place started to become packed and super busy. So I have to say our service wasn't exactly great. We had 3 different staff waiting on us at different points. They would clear plates and empty glasses and not ask if there was anything else we wanted. It was kinda awkward to order more things. Maybe they were trying to signal to us to GTFO? But nope, we weren't going. We needed more and more food and drinks. It was that good. The appetizer sampler was a great way to go. A little bit of everything. The deviled eggs, chicken cracklins, and pimento dip were standout for me. But don't skip out on the crab hushpuppies or fried pickles either. I particularly like the hot honey that came with the chicken cracklins. Yum yum! We then had chicken and waffles, an entree sampler, a lobster roll, etc. The standout for me was surprisingly not the fried chicken, but the roast chicken with peach sauce. Holy crap! Wow! Nom nom! That was the best chicken and sauce. I never would've thought of pairing peaches with chicken. But it works so well. And that chicken was perfectly cooked and seasoned. And the cocktails. I wanted to like this place so bad. I really did. But the service. Just awful. The food is for sure one of the better tasting restaurants in the Alexandria area and what is saving this from a one star review. We had a 10:30am reservation. We walked in and were the only people inside. Got seated around 10:20. Around 10:30 one other table came in. The guy server did not come and take our drink order until that other table sat down. Then he took our drink order took theirs and came back with both tables orders. He attended them while our drinks sat there waiting for him to be done with their mimosas. After we got our drinks, the place start filling up fast. 4 more tables came in. The more service the other tables got the less we got. All five tables got their food before we did and we ordered the same thing they did. We waited and waited and waited. And finally the manager asked if everything was okay. We said we were the first ones in here this morning and the only ones up here without food. She went and checked while our waiter was just MIA. He didn't even clear off our table, the manager did. Our waiter was quick to tell us too the rules of their brunch rules but couldn't even get us appropriate service. Just based off the service alone I will not be dining here. For my son's birthday, we decided to try Hen Quarter. Perched over lovely Old Town Alexandria's King Street, HQ has a regular restaurant on its second floor and a pop-up fried chicken and beer spot on the ground floor. A true Nashville spicy hot chicken Aficianado, my son was pleasantly surprised when he was given the chance to order from "The Rub" menu while seated in HQ. This accommodation allowed the rest of us to enjoy the larger HQ menu. A quick recap of our order: starters were a basket of biscuits and the brussel sprouts (both were FIRE!!!); my younger son had the HQ burger (A+), I had the catfish with mashed potatoes and collared greens (EPIC!). My wife had the Savannah salad (meh...) As a vegetarian, some restaurants get salads right: flavorful, thick with plant based protein, and satisfying. The savannah salad wasn't it. (In retrospect, she feels like the Nashville hot cauliflower should have been her order---it is an attempt to make vegetarians a non-pasta main course.) I went for brunch and found the place overpriced. I still don't understand their family brunch policy in which you can't take home the remains from meals. It seems like a waste of food and money. I understand similar policies at buffet style restaurants, but the food is plated at this restaurant. If at a buffet style restaurant, you can determine what to place on your plate based on your appetite/hunger. At HQ you have no idea what the portions look like, so you could easily order the three starters and three entrees and be full half way through the courses...and yet you can't take the remaining food home. Another issue for me was that you have to walk up to the second floor to check in with the hostess. There was no one to provide any direction- when walking into the restaurant and it makes me question how HQ assists people with accessibility challenges. My last piece of advice is not to get the chicken and biscuit with gravy dish. It's a small chicken tender on a small biscuit. Definitely not worth the price. read more

Not great. Food overall was decent, but not good enough to want again. The real problem is the service. Gf and I went on a Saturday morning for their brunch service. I won't fault the servers themselves for being understaffed (they clearly were for the amount of business that morning), but our server just didn't have any sense of urgency for the circumstances. She knew we were waiting long to be greeted. She knew our drinks were taking longer than normal. She knew they were understaffed as she made it a point to let us know that. Her only recovery attempt was to give my gf her first mimosa for free. This would've been a nice gesture had it not been for the fact that my gf ordered bottomless mimosas to start with! Kitchen seemed unorganized too given that our entrees came out before our appetizers. It wasn't even addressed! They dropped the mains to the table, then the apps several minutes after. I love when I walk in a place and right away I'm greeted with a smile and that's exactly what happened at Hen! The ambiance was filled with a lot of brown color and I sat in a booth seat which was comfy. Our waiter was apparently new so wanted us to give feedback on how well he did which he did amazing, super friendly and smiled a lot. The food was great! We came for restaurant week and they offered their staple meals. The deviled eggs and brussel sprouts were just amazing!!! I got the braised short ribs which was super tender and went well with the gravy and mashed potatoes. My friend ordered the gigantic chicken and waffles , I mean it could feed a family lol. According to the waiter , people would complain about the size back in the day but babyyy they sure made it up for it. There's a lot of great things about this place - service, ambiance, location - but their menu is the best. For our appetizer, we ordered the HQ Sampler hoping this would satisfy everyone. It included fried pickles (yum!), chicken crackling (double yum), crab hushpuppies (delicious), pimento cheese dip (I ate this by the spoonful) and naan (kind of a random placement of bread...but it worked!). ---4/5 I ordered the Spinach & Goat Cheese salad because I was craving some veggies and needed some sort of "healthy" choice while travelling. This was a tasty salad with a combo of sun dried cranberries, candied pecans, red onion and a honey balsamic vinaigrette. Only "suggestion" would be to lesson up on the cranberries and pecans...it was just a TAD bit too sweet for me. ---3/5 The hubby ordered the Smokehouse Roasted Salmon. I didn't get to taste this dish, but I know he was a fan. It came with grits, quinoa, succotash with baby spinach, topped with poblano sauce. Decided to have brunch here yesterday with out of town guests. It was my first time trying the restaurant and was not disappointed. We did the family style brunch. Be advised you cannot take any food home with you. I do wish I'd known they treat this as a traditional buffet so once they remove it from your table, it's gone.
