PSA - This review is solely based on my experience at Sunday Brunch. 9am -3pm weekends. Yesssss! The food at Hen Quarter was fab and the mimosas/bellinis were strong! Clearly all the characteristics I look for in a hardcore Sunday Brunch! I met up with my college friends for a ladies brunch and we all left stuffed and ready to take naps! Lol! Located in Old Towne Alexandria, Hen Quarter sits on the corner of King Street where street parking is pretty easy to find if you come early enough in the day. The restaurant has 2 levels and upon entry we were greeted by an acoustic guitarist playing by the door. A pretty impressive large bar is on the 1st level and limited outside seating is available. Since this seems to be a popular spot, I would book reservations, especially for brunch. You can either order from the menu or order the buffet. The buffet is $30.50 for adults. I think the best option is to get the buffet where you can get made to order omelets/scrambles and waffles, shrimp, bacon, grits, fruit, fried chicken, a variety of desserts and several other breakfast/lunch options. For $15 you can get bottomless mimosas/bellinis but after the first 1, refills cost .25. Pretty weird concept, but ordering just one is $8.00. With flavors like strawberry, watermelon, peach and of course original, getting the bottomless option might be best. Plus they're interchangeable. Service was very attentive and my glass was never empty. Also, other characteristics I look for in a hardcore Sunday Brunch! The manager came by and checked on us and the guy at the omelette station held an awesome conversation with me. I can tell he takes pride in his craft. (He also prepares dinner for the restaurant and showed me pics of his work) Clearly I will return to this restaurant. It goes without saying that when at Hen quarters you have to try a part of the Hen. I decided on the chicken and waffles and although initially shocked by the type of waffle. It was by far one of the best unique waffles ever. It is a savory waffle made with cornbread, corn, cheddar and chives. A new waffle favorite and a definite must try. The chicken is fried to perfection but the skin is actually the best part. The meet was a little dry. The kids menu is huge in size, to save two kids can split one meal. The waiter was great and of course the boys enjoyed that his name was also Jackson and he went by Jack. Great food and great service! We visited on a Wednesday night, which by fun chance was "$10 chicken & waffles, $5 drafts and half-price wine night". What a great combination of specials! We settled in at the bar and ordered a bottle of wine to get started. My husband and I both took advantage of the chicken & waffles special and agreed that it was excellent! The breading on the fried chicken had a wonderful smoky flavor to it and the waffles were a perfect compliment, as was the yummy maple syrup. The portion size, 2 pieces of chicken and a full waffle, was just right. After dinner, we enjoyed a couple of their unique cocktails and both were top notch. The menu has changed and though the family enjoyed the fried chicken dinner, this visit was greatly lacking. On our previous visit we were blown away by attentive staff who was very careful with my gluten allergy. Our server this time was not skilled at all with handling dietary needs (told me that the fried chicken was not battered). I asked if I could speak with the chef or manager, and the server continued to act as the middle man. I ordered a salad and the GF steak bites. My fiance and I went to Hen Quarter on a Friday evening at about 6 p.m., hoping for a quick dinner before the Friday night rush (spoiler: that did not happen). When we got there, it was slow for a Friday, as in medium-busy, but they appeared to have it under control. I asked if we could sit outside and we were seated at a dirty table that the host cleaned after I asked him to. We got our waters pretty quickly, but then waited a while for a waiter. Once she came outside, she made it pretty clear that we should get our orders in while she was out there since she also had tables inside. We got our full order in, including drinks. We got biscuits as an appetizer--these came out almost immediately. I had to flag down someone to ask for appetizer plates. Our drinks arrived about 15 minutes later, after we had already finished our appetizer. Meanwhile, two ladies sat down next to us, ordered drinks, got their drinks, and had paid the bill and left within about 20 minutes. (insert confused emoji here?) We started talking and after a while we were like, "uhhh oh it's been a while, where's our food?" During this time my fiance saw one of the barhops/cleaners clear a table and literally throw the water from the glasses into the street. After 45 minutes and other people around us getting their food, our waitress told us she was checking on it for us. This consisted of her knocking on the window to get someone's attention inside, and yelling out our table number. She is not the only person who communicated with internal staff by yelling or knocking through the window. A few more minutes went by, and the waitress said she was sorry, but that she had forgot to press "send" on our order and that they were now rushing it. OK, cool, thank you for owning up... she offered to get us one glass of wine to make up for it? So the food came out after over an hour, and no complaints, which is why this is not a 1-star review. My fiance said the hot wings were the best he's ever eaten. A manager came by later and said they were going to give us half off of the food, which was nice, but honestly the meal should've been comped. We asked for our check and a box. The waitress forgot about us and after 10 minutes I went inside, found her, paid the bill, she said, "oh sorry, i got distracted!" and we FINALLY left. This is the third or fourth time I've been to Hen Quarter where the food was good and the service was either awful or just meh. A lot of the workers are unprofessional or look like they just really don't want to be there. I won't be back after this last adventure. I can get decent fried chicken somewhere else for a lot cheaper and less hassle. If this was a dive bar, I would've thought all of this was funny. They have limited seating and even though we got there around 10am all the tables were reserved and we had to sit at the bar. That being said we had a great experience! Hector our waiter was completely overwhelmed and kept coming to our table telling us he would check on our drinks which two of us received but my other friend didn't. Let's talk a second about the food. The chicken and waffles, deviled eggs, and hushpuppies were amazing. However, the shrimp and grits....were horrible. The grits were dry and grainy, almost like eating cornmeal rice. I'm not sure if this is how this restaurant prepares grits but we noticed quite a few people not even eat them. It's truly unfortunate we had such a bad experience. I was just blown away by the lack of preparation and felt the only concern they had was "packing the restaurant for money" because they never slowed down the number of people being seated. While visiting the DMV for the weekend we found this place not too far from our hotel. Wanted a nice place for breakfast and upon arriving with our reservation we came early but they weren't ready to seat us. So make note, if you take the first reservation when It first opens, unless they have a hostess waiting to set you early, come at your appointment time. Except for that little hiccup the place was really nice, great ambience, had some nice character very clean and it's in a lot larger space than we thought. We like that they had seating upstairs and if were along the wall with the windows, you had a nice little view along with the rustic ambience of the place. They had a good menu with good selection, my wife is a vegan and was able to find things that she enjoyed and of course I had to have the steak and eggs which were very fluffy and the potatoes were very well seasoned and my steak was made to order. I will certainly come back to this establishment again. Oh and one last thing it is not wheelchair friendly just so you know when you first come into the building there's one restaurant downstairs and you walk through that area to go upstairs to that restaurant but there's no escalator and no elevator, so if someone is wheelchair-bound this won't work. read more

I had an excellent dinner experience with a friend at this restaurant recently. I'd previously visited the DC location of Hen Quarter (a few years ago) and, based on that experience, I already had high hopes for this place. The restaurant and overall experience certainly did not disappoint. We visited during a weeknight and easily got a table in the upstairs dining room without a reservation. It didn't seem too crowded, though we were certainly not the only ones there. Their booths are comfortable and conducive to a good conversation. I ordered the Shrimp & Grits (comprised of stone-ground cream grits, andouille sausge, okra, fennel, tomato, and Charleston pan sauce). This was excellent and I definitely recommend it! We also ordered the Fried Green Tomatoes to share between the two of us. I love fried green tomatoes generally and this iteration of it was quite unique. It was topped with smoked mozzarella and Sea Island pea salsa, which was unique and paired well with the fried tomatoes. We also ordered drinks. They have a good selection of cocktails. Between us, we ordered the Mint Julep, "Practice What You Peach," and "Bee's Knees" cocktails. The drinks were tasty and paired well with our food. The food was plentiful and also quite delicious! My dish was full of flavor and I even had some leftovers to take home with me (win!). I would love to visit Hen Quarter again. Both DC area locations are excellent, and I especially love that the VA location is located right on King Street in charming Old Town Alexandria. read more
