Every time we go to Festival of the Little Hills, we try to find a new restaurant to try. We were excited to learn about Hendricks and because of how busy I knew Main Street would be, I was even more excited to see that I could make a reservation. Parking is limited, even with the festival, but luckily we were able to get in at our reservation time. We used the Yelp coupon and got the BBQ nachos to share amongst our group - delish! I got the pulled pork with green beans and french fries and wasn't disappointed. The portions are big, and everything came out ready to eat and looked great. I loved the atmosphere. Who doesn't love drinking out of a mason jar? I can't wait to go back and try other menu options while enjoying a day, or night, on Main Street. read more

You know it wasn't a good experience when the first thing you and your wife simultaneously say is, "Well that was disappointing!" Which it was. We were super excited to try this place because we've been to Sanctuaria, and the food and drink there was awesome. So we figured the same would apply here, but with the BBQ. Not so, not so. The place was decorated really neat, and has a cool outside seating area which would be great to visit on a cool summer evening. That's about where our liking of this place ended. We started with the BBQ nacho appetizer, free if you check in on yelp, which we did. I'm glad we didn't pay for it. It was like they tried to make a nacho, pulled pork salad. There were big chunks of lettuce that made no sense in it. Not to mention we asked for the baked beans on the side, instead of in the nachos. Of course the beans still came in the nachos. The pulled pork that topped the nachos had no smoky flavor, for all I knew it was roasted in a rotisserie or in an oven. No semblance of and BBQ or smoke flavor in it. Also did not love the sparse bit of cheese they put on it was already hard and congealed by the time it made it to our table. Which was a long time. In fact everything that we ordered took forever. We must have waited 15 minutes for our beers to arrive, and equally long for our entree's after our appetizer. My wife ordered a burger with cheese and sides of fried potatoes and potato salad. Hey, she likes potatoes. I ordered the turkey dinner entree. Usually entree would indicate your meal comes with a side or two. Usually the term "meal" means you get a main dish and at least one side dish. Well sadly your turkey entree comes with no sides at all, you have to order them ala carte. When my food arrived my wife actually said, "They should be ashamed to serve you an entree with no side!" And it was a just a sad little plate with a small portion of turkey on it. I ordered the large size, but was I got felt like it was the small. I can't imagine if I had ordered the small size, the plate would have looked HOOGE. So upon seeing my sad little plate of tiny turkey breast, I asked for a side of sweet potato casserole. If took another 15 minutes for that to arrive. My turkey was just like the pulled pork. No smokey flavor, no BBQ tasty goodness. If this turkey was smoked or BBQ'd you could have fooled me! Was it juicy? Yes. Did it taste like over roasted turkey? Also yes. Even if I saw them smoke or BBQ this turkey with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed it. Lets talk about sides. My sweet potato casserole was fine, just fine. No strong flavors, it was very mild and borderline bland. My wife's fried potatoes were no different than what I could make at home, in fact I could definately make those at home, but better. They had very little seasoning. My wife described the potatoes in the potato salad as "Barely cooked" and "a hair away from crunchy." My wife said her burger was fine, but not worth ever going back for, let alone you don't go to a BBQ place for a burger. Shall I discuss the sauces? I shall. The 'sweet' sauce was sweet but it was very runny. In fact all the sauces with the exception of the 'spicy', were very runny. And they all seemed loaded with paprika. That's how it tasted to me. The spicy really wasn't very spicy and I got more paprika taste than anything. The 'house' tasted more sweet than the sweet. The 'STL' was fine. All in all they were nothing special, IMO. It was a completely underwhelming experience, and I do realize that St. Charles doesn't have many options as far as BBQ goes, but for serious...no side dish with my entree? This isn't a Ruths Chris steak house. My wive's prediction- They won't be open long. My predication- they've got a lot of work to do to be as good as Sanctuaria. As I live only two blocks from Hendrick's & love BBQ, I've been waiting anxiously for the opening ever since they put the sign up many months ago. The atmosphere & decor are great. Kind of a cross between a blues bar & country restaurant (checkered napkins & mason jars for beverages.) Having seen the inside of the building in its previous incarnations, they really put a lot into it and you can tell. We sat on the deck overlooking the Katy Trail & except for the smoker right beside us (even outside it was a brutal experience to breathe in cigarette smoke) it was a great place to eat. I was surprised by the variety of the menu in that there were many things that were not BBQ related. The selection of sides was impressive. My wife & I ordered a sampler platter, which had three meats (turkey, brisket, & pulled pork) & two sides (fried potatoes & corn casserole). By all accounts the sides were excellent. The meats were fantastic as well. They are cooked with a dry rub & you put your own sauce on. Speaking of sauces, my preference was the "mild" as the others were very spicy. My only complaint was that I thought the portions were small for the price. I imagine that the owners are trying to create a little more upscale environment rather than a typical BBQ chain, and that was reflected in the prices. Everything is a la carte, which typically pushes the bill higher. With no complementary appetizers to snack on while you wait, I left feeling that it was a little overpriced. The family units and I decided to try Hendrick's because... well, you know... BBQ :) We were greeted and seated quickly as they were not busy at the time we arrived. TIP: Check in via Yelp and receive a free appetizer! We did so and ordered the fried green tomatoes and the cornbread. The tomatoes were just a hair too thick which made them a bit tougher than I'm used to. Plus they had pretty thick breading on them. Taste was just ok. I've certainly had better elsewhere. The accompanying sauce had a decent flavor. The cornbread is on the sweeter side, and had a good flavor - albeit dry. More of an opportunity to slather on some of the honey butter that accompanied the order along with some honey Chipotle sauce.... let me warn you now, the Honey Chipotle is quite spicy. On to the meat! I ordered the 'Pick Three Sampler' at a price of $24. I chose baby backs, pulled pork, and brisket. Let's break it down: Baby Backs - Good flavor, moist, good dry rub and smoke, but the portion was quite skimpy. 3 ribs which were no more than 2 1/2 inches in length. Pulled pork was moist, larger chunks/not shredded, but again... maybe a small handful portion at best. Brisket was sliced thinner than it should've been as it lost its moisture. It had a very slight smoke ring which did not translate into much flavor. Portions included 3 small slices about 5-6 inches in length. Sides ordered were sweet potato fries and cole slaw. Fries were great, but the cole slaw was very bitter and inedible - perhaps some ingredients were missed? Another order at the table was the pulled pork sandwich. This came with a better portion size, but it was dwarfed by the huge bun and massive pile of cole slaw on top. 4 sauces are on the table: Sweet, House, STL, and Hot. Sweet - very sweet with a heavy molasses base - good flavor. House - vinegar base with a punch. STL - another vinegar base with a strong cayenne flavor. Hot - I didn't even attempt this one - haha. Overall, I'd say it was overpriced for the quality and quantity received. I would pay their asking price if it was amazing BBQ, but I was not all that impressed. Would I go back? Perhaps. I wanted to give Hendrick's a few chances before writing a review. My first two trips were during the "soft opening" phase and my most recent was on a busy Saturday evening. Being a new restaurant, I know there are going to be challenges. However in the case of Hendrick's, things have seemed to go down hill since my first trip rather than improving. (Now the latest blow since my last trip is that their chef Chris Lee has announced he is leaving just months after the place opened? That just doesn't look good for business). Hendrick's BBQ is situated in the old water works building on Main St. in St. Charles. The ownership group has done a phenomenal jobs of renovating the space and transforming it into a Bluesly BBQ Joint (with a soon to be opened moonshine bar in the basement). The main dinning room is on the first floor (which if coming in from the back is actually upstairs). The dinning room is VERY large and features a good mixture of banquettes and traditional seating. Additionally there is a raised seating area in the center of the dinning room which does a great job of breaking the space up a bit. Also there is a small bar and a "chefs table" however in my three trips the chef's table does not seem to be used. I am giving the dinning room and decor a 5+ star rating. The small bar would typically be a knock against them, however I understand that they are still waiting on the larger basement bar to be completed. (With the drink menu that Hendrick's offers, it should be easier to enjoy a cocktail in the bar area before deciding to grab a table) When I am new to a BBQ joint, I try to order a tasting menu of sorts (or in BBQ speak, a platter/sampler). The BBQ platter at Hendrick's gives you the full offering of their smoked meats and your choice of 4 side dishes. In each of my 3 trips here I have ordered this sampler, and from visit to visit the consistency in quality was less than stellar. Here are the meats that are included on the sampler/ whole shebang and what my experiences have been with them: Pork Ribs (STL and Baby Back) - These appear to come from a fairly nice pig as the quality of the meat is better than most BBQ shacks. The flavor is pretty much overpowered with smoke and the rub is on the bland side. These ribs are both served dry which tends to be the trend in town right now. The Baby Back and STL both have very similar flavor and texture (little bit more bite than I would prefer). With 2 rib options it would be nice if there was more difference between them. All in all these are middle of the road. First time I was in, both ribs showed promise. However over time they seem to be dryer with each visit. Beef Brisket - Like the pork, you can tell this is a high quality piece of meat. The natural beef flavor of this product is very nice. Additionally from a flavor stand point, I can appreciate the fact that they leave a touch of the fat cap on their briskets (too many places cut this off saying that customers dont like fat, fat is flavor people!). From a tenderness stand point, my first two trips in the brisket was close to being nailed (my last visit it was dry, not jerky dry, but just dryer than before). I would say that the brisket is one of their strongest offerings. "Pulled" Pork - The pulled pork is middle of the road (as many places are). For whatever reason it is served in more of a chunked or tubed fashion rather than the tradition pull. The texture and flavor are somewhat bland. On the pork there is nothing that leaves you wanting more but at the same time your not going to send it back to the kitchen. There was no noticeable difference from visit to visit in terms of the pork. Sliced Turkey - The smoked turkey is thick sliced turkey breast meat. The smokiness is great and compliments the dry rub nicely. My first two trips in, I was floored by how moist this turkey was (3rd time they missed the mark considerably). If I could trust the quality of the turkey, I would have no issues sending someone here specifically to try it. Smoked Sausage - This appears to be a beef link that lacks the bite of a traditional hot link. While there are noticeably a few mustard seeds for heat, this sausage leaves me wanting more from a flavor stand point. While the texture has been good on the sausage each visit, the flavor is uninspiring. I can't really knock this dish, but it doesn't blow me away either. The side dishes are all above average but there are none of them that stand out as having to order. The appetizers that I have tried sound better on paper than what is actually served. I have asked the waiter why Hendrick's appetizers lack the wow factor that I am used to with Chris Lee's dishes and I was informed that Chef Lee does not necessarily have a hand in all of those recipes (now it is a moot point anyways as he is leaving for a new project). To sum it all up, Hendrick's has shown promise early on but still has a long way to go... read more

Let me first say this, I don't know why BBQ places think their prices need to be so dang high. It amazes me every time how much I end up paying for such small portions of meat. That being said, I will lump this place in with the rest of BBQ places. The serving size is small for the price, and their BBQ is just average. The sides were pretty good, but the same theory applies. Even the "family size" sides were dinky. There were four of us in the group, but one had recently had surgery so she could only eat a small portion. We shelled out over $90, and I left hungry...that's just unacceptable. That was with NO ALCOHOL! Just goes to show, if all places in a certain niche raise their prices, then people will still pay for it. Look at chicken wings, they are super cheap to make...and we still pay a dollar each for something that is worth less than a dime. The service was above average...that's why this place has three stars. If you are willing to pay for this type of food, then you darn well have good service. Our server was wonderful. Showed up and sat immediately. Sat at our table over 10 minutes before a woman saw us. She then proceeded to walk around the dining room complaining to all other servers that we had been seated. We were ready to walk out. A woman said she'd be with us as she continued to set a table for a large party that hadn't arrived yet. Eventually a nice woman came over to get our drink order and then our food order. I will not return here because of the rude ass wait woman. You do not make a table feel unwelcome. It's hard to feel good about the food when the wait staff are so blatantly rude. A table was left unbussed for an hour. Took nearly 20 min to get fried pickles. 5:30 on a Saturday and 3 tables? We should have known better. Food was terrible too-greasy half breaded fried pickles, Luke warm entree, tons of fat and little meat. read more

Where do I start? First of all, I suppose I should begin by saying "shame on me" for not trying this place sooner! Mrs. S and I stopped in last Sunday with her parents in tow. They were visiting and her father had always wanted to check out Old Town St. Charles, so we made our way down to Hendricks BBQ! First off, if you aren't familiar with Old Town, parking is a bit of a mystery here. You will need to look for a sign for public parking and go down the hill, and then make your way to the best spot you can find from there. There is no place to park on the cobblestone street! As far as food is concerned, there is plenty to choose from. The in-laws mistakenly ordered family portions of green beans, potato salad, cole slaw, and sweet potato casserole with their Smoked Turkey dinners. I say mistakenly because the waitress didn't do a very good job of explaining to them what they were ordering. There was confusion over which meals came with sides, and which did not, and my mother in law talks more than she listens, so I cannot fault the waitress entirely! Mrs. S and I, on the other hand, ordered "The Whole Shebang." It is exactly what it sounds like, a sample platter featuring each kind of meat they offer for BBQ. There was a plentiful assortment of brisket, smoked turkey, ribs, sausage, and pulled pork. The sauces were on the table, and each had their own appeal. I enjoyed the combo of the honey bbq with the pulled pork, the dry sauce was great on the brisket, and the turkey went well with the house sauce. My favorite was the sausage with their spiciest sauce. The meal also came with 4 sides, each much smaller than the family sized portions my in-laws were served! Our selection was the sweet potato casserole, corn casserole, baked beans, and....Hell I can't remember! I especially liked the baked beans and corn casserole, Mrs. S loved the sweet potato casserole. We both ate the other side, whatever it was. The atmosphere here was really nice. There was music playing but not overpowering, and honestly I really enjoyed it. My only complaints are with the service, and even these aren't beyond repair. Initially, after being seated, it took several minutes to be acknowledged by a server. For me this is a big deal, it sets the tone for the service, and it's the first thing I notice when dining out. I will say, once our server, her name was Sarah, appeared, she did a decent job of keeping our glasses full and making sure we had everything we needed, although it seemed that the further into our meals we got, the longer we went between check ins. Then, there was the issue with not taking the time to clarify the issues with the sides, which resulted in my in-laws ordering $22 worth of side items! The final complaint with service is the failure to at least ask if we were splitting the check. This is another aggravation of mine, and maybe it is just me, but when two couples are sitting down for dinner, it seems like common sense to ask if the check needs to be split. I don't carry cash on me, so it is always an inconvenience! Just ask! On a final note, I was pleased to see that Hendricks BBQ uses Yelp! Check-In discounts. The $5 off our meal was a nice incentive. My closing thoughts on Hendricks BBQ are simple. I loved the food. The atmosphere is very inviting and I cannot wait to go back. Spoiler alert: Had it not been for the incompetent hostesses, I'd give this place at least 4-stars. My boyfriend and I chose this place primarily due to the proximity to our hotel, secondarily because we are both smoked meat enthusiasts. On one of the warmest nights this winter, the place was packed causing even more confusion for the two girls at the door. When we asked if we could sit at the empty bar table to avoid the 30-45 minute wait, one hostess said "yes", the other said "no" because they were so busy. (Get your stories straight, ladies!). There were at least three other couples waiting when we arrived who obviously who weren't interested in the table, so I think she was being snarky because she had all the seating power. Sad. Another issue for me was that the hostesses apparently were relying on their memory to select who got seated and in what order. Once you gave your name, they entered something in their computer - not sure what - because it didn't help with seating. I even overheard one say that she didn't see someone, therefore seated another party instead. I believe she was referring to myself and my guy, because she said this after seating a couple who walked in off the street - at the very same bar table I had previously inquired about - that had remained empty for over 20 minutes - and there was no one else waiting in the lobby area other than us. Most patrons were opting for the patio on this warm evening. These women clearly had no clue as to what they were doing; supported by the fact that several servers had to come offer some direction during our wait. Nonetheless, we were finally seated after about 40 minutes. Considering the packed house, our service was at least pretty quick. We started with fried green tomatoes - that had little flavor and were too firm. The sauce that was drizzled on top was colorful, but relatively flavorless, so I don't know if it should've been sweet, smoky or savory. My smoked brisket was tender, juicy and flavorful, with a peppercorn crust. Against my better judgment (being the greens snob that I am), I ordered the bacon braised greens. Texture was ok, but they were sweet. WHY DO COOKS THINK GREENS NEED SUGAR?!!!!! Here's a tip folks...they do not! My guy had the pulled pork (also tender, juicy and flavorful) and fries. I don't care for coated French fries, but at least these were crispy and hot. On the other hand, the Hail Mary IPA, brewed by Cathedral Square Brewery was on point!! All in all, if I am in the area, I'd try this place again, if only for the beer and the cool atmosphere. read more

Two star food and four star service. Went here for lunch today with the boss and a coworker. Tried the BBQ nachos as the free check-in appetizer. They were tasty - loaded with goodies and the BBQ was good, kind of sweet which I like. After telling my companions that anyone who orders a veggie burger at a BBQ place should be taken out back and shot, I brilliantly ordered the soup and salad special. Caught some flack for that one, but the chili was made with burnt ends which I (theoretically) love and I wasn't super-hungry after the nachos. Did not like the chili at all - the "burnt ends" were just cubes of brisket and the pieces were too big to manage in a chili. The caesar salad was good but the lettuce was a little on the limp side. Boss had the ribs; glad I didn't order them because I could tell by watching him eat them that I would not have liked them. I like tender, juicy meat that falls off the bone into my mouth and just melts. These looked a little dry for my taste and he struggled to eat them with a knife and fork. We agreed that the best part of the meal was the little piece of cinnamon bread pudding that came on the side of their lunch specials. Service was spot on, but we will probably stick to Sugar Fire or Pappy's for BBQ. read more

I came here to get dinner with a friend. Being on a budget, I decided to order an appetizer at the suggestion of my friend. We both got the shrimp and grits and omg, it was so good! Unfortunately, it was also TINY. I took my time and paced myself but I still finished the grits much faster than I wanted to. On the bright side, the food was fairly heavy and reasonably filling. Fries were also ordered. They were thick and crispy and solid. Not too expensive either and there were a lot of fries! So after i ate the grits, I nommed on fries. We also got a few drinks. The sangria was ok but not my favorite (not a huge fan of smoke usually) but the other two drinks were really tasty! One of the drink of the day, the other I can't recall, but was a standard. Came in with my brother to grab some lunch here, and we were maybe 1 of 3 tables there total. Younger girls were hanging by the hostess area with no greeting or friendliness. We sat and ordered almost right away, (Brisket, potato salad, baked beans.) The food came out about 5 min later, and without exaggerating, we literally cleaned our plates within another 5 min. That's how small the proportions were. I was still hungry, and after the bill with tip included, was nearly 40.00. For lunch?! The food overall wasn't too shabby, but was definitely not worth it. Arrived around 7:30 on 2/15/14. Place was packed and we were told there would be a 30-45 minute wait. We expected to wait as it was Saturday, so no big deal there. After we were seated, our waitress, Shannon, was very attentive. We were told they were out of ribs and turkey (Saturday night and you're out?), no big deal either as I ordered the brisket and pulled pork with sweet potato casserole and baked beans. SO & her son ordered the small brisket plate with mashed potatoes and corn bake, respectively along with the bbq nachos appetizer. Nachos arrived and Shannon was constantly apologizing for the wait (told her no biggie as it's expected when the place is packed) and they were ok. There was a little bit of pulled pork on top and it had baked beans, some kind of cheese, jalapenos, and sour cream throughout. Next, we received our dinner. After my pick 2 was set in front of me, I almost asked if this was all I was getting (I wish I took a picture). There was less than a handful of pulled pork and 3 strips of brisket. The sides were in 2oz cups. I expected quite a bit more for $18. After trying the brisket and pork, they both had to be drowned in bbq sauce as they were pretty tasteless (good bbq doesn't need to be drowned in sauce). The sauces were not very good either. After trying the sweet, I had to mix in the hot just to get it to be not so sweet. I tried what I assumed was the dry rub on the table. Big mistake as all I could taste was the salt. SO and her son's dinner did not fare much better. My SO asked Shannon as to why the mashed potatoes were so salty and she said that they mix the dough with bacon fat. I love bacon, but even these things were too salty for me. His comments about the brisket were similar to mine and his side was barely touched. I would say the price for both of their plates, $22, was a little better, but not by much. Overall, we were very disappointed with Hendricks after reading the reviews here on yelp and the review in Midrivers Magazine. Needless to say, we will not be going back, nor would we recommend it. read more

We had our Team Dinner here which ended up being about....30'ish people. We had the whole second floor to ourselves! I would first like to give props to this place for their Yelp deal of a free drink. Thank you, it was a $9 drink, and I appreciate you not giving me grief about it since we paid ahead of time as a group. I don't remember what I had, but it was really good...everyone was very happy with the drinks...beer, IPA, cocktails, all of it. The atmosphere and decor was very cool...a little dark as far as lighting goes, but not a hindrance. The food was AWESOME!! We were served buffet style. I had brisket, turkey, mashed potatoes and baked beans. The meat was VERY tender and flavorful, the mashed potatoes were...mashed potatoes, and the baked beans were the best I've ever had. Hendricks BBQ is a little off the beaten path, but very much on the cycled path (Katy Trail) between Trailhead Brewery (the unofficial beginning of the touristy Main Street St. Charles) and the Ameristar Hulking Suburban Brickglob, I mean Casino. But about Hendricks. I just want to say this: Cobb Salad. Okay, it's standard, yes. Not something you'd expect to find at Niche unless they deconstruct it into a dessert or something. BUT...and this is a big butt...when it's done right, this is a combination of tastes that is really, really hard to beat. Hendricks does it right. They call it a BBQ Cobb, but that's only because "Ordinary Cobb" wouldn't sound as appealing. The beauty of this version is in the smoked bacon and pulled pork (which I added - you could also pick chicken or brisket). The salad is really perfect as is, for $9, but adding pulled pork for just $2 more gave me an excuse to try the BBQ and I'm glad I did, because it was excellent. A generous helping, too. What a great lunch. The ambiance here is nice, if a bit of a weathered wood and neon cliché, but that may be because of the similar places that followed. Anyway, it hits the sweet spot as a restaurant that's fine for family, date, business, group or whatever. Pretty sure I'll be back to try some more of their BBQ and other offerings. CHECK YOUR BILL! The service was just ok and so was the food. The big issue I had is when the check was delivered there was an "ACA Surcharge?" In case you were wondering what this is, as I did, it's a surcharge the restaurant is sneaking onto the check to cover their expenses for the Affordable Care Act, i.e., Obamacare! Sorry, but I pay almost $400 a month for health insurance already for me and my child and I don't want to pay for others. I did request to take it off which took an additional 30 minutes! The manager did come to the table and told us the servers are required to tell us upon seating about the surcharge and that its posted on their menus. We were not warned ahead of time and when I asked to see the menu the manager just said he'd take it off the check. We will not be returning. The only reason I am giving two stars is the server seemed like a good person and when the food is done right it can be tasty, but there never seems to be any consistency to either. read more

Didn't love it. Service was SLOW. I have had better bbq and sauces other places. Brisket was dry. Pork was ok. St Louis ribs were spicy. Good atmosphere, love the outside fireplace. Service was a bit slow, dinner at 6pm, no wait. Appetizers came out pretty good, fried green tomatoes were ok but a bit tough, onion rings spicy. Tried the baby back ribs, pulled pork and brisket. The ribs were good, the pulled pork good, but the brisket was dry. Their BBQ sauces are not to my liking, even tried their dry rub to sprinkle on their meats. I think it would taste better if they bake either a wet or dry type of meat. I do love scrolling through the reviews of fellow Yelpers to see how experiences vary. I am coming down in the camp of "Great lunch spot close to work and verrrryyyy intrigued by the selection of whiskey and bourbon" but that last one will have to wait until happy hour ;) Had seen the overall rating of Hendrick's as good and wanted to give it a shot as there is NO WHERE to eat in Hazelwood..seriously..no where..NO I DO NOT WANT JIMMY JOHNS!!! :) So I dragged a coworker along to sample some BBQ. Slow at lunch but as many have noted the decor is great! I am a huge blues fan so the portraits and short bios were a great touch. The Blues Bar remains unopened as of this review and i couldn't get a projected opening date. Two sandwiches were consumed (and I do have to comment that I was confused by a fellow Yelpers note that no sides are offered with entrees? I am 82% sure that they were on the menu i perused) with appropriate sides (slaw, beans and fries). I had pulled pork and I do agree it is neither pulled in the traditional sense, not super smokey and not wet (but guess why you have sauces at the table). But the pork was tender and juicy..I can work with that.. Coworker had a brisket sandwich and based on the quick disappearance appeared to have no qualms. But the drink menu..local beers only on tab...no INBEV is not local..I was very happy to see that the are supporting UCBC, Four Hands, Charleville, and others on their taps (and yes Mr and Mrs. Inbev you are there in bottles). But the whiskey slections..you crazy beautiful bastards! Pappy van Winkle 15 year...really??!? I think I just drooled on myself..although you cant get Pappy in any flight (and it would be waste to do that) there appeared to be some creative thought given to all the flights as well as the signature cocktails. I came here and dined with some family who live in the area. I had just finished a cross-city adventure to retrieve a forgotten stuffed animal downtown and I was riding a little bit of a high after successfully crossing 4 lanes of traffic to hit my exit (only 3 people died). We were seated on the upstairs deck area outside. First of all, the iron rocking chairs were incredibly comfortable. It was a very relaxing atmosphere. I gently rocked as I examined the menu. The staple BBQ prices seemed reasonable but with no added sides, they could quickly become pricey. However, in sandwich form, it was very well priced (maybe too good). Most at the table ordered the brisket sandwich. I ended up getting the same with greens and macaroni and cheese. Beers and drinks come in mason jars. This gives you that down-home brewed in the bathtub feeling that we all love. Food came out and holy cow it was a lot of beef for one sandwich. Macaroni and cheese was A+ with a little BBQ sauce mixed in. Greens were good. They weren't the best I've ever had, but they were good. The brisket was tender, moist, tender, juicy, tender and with a little crunch. All the words you want to hear when describing brisket. The only reason I can't give 5 stars is that the "Hot" BBQ sauce is anything but hot. I got more spice smelling the chlorine at the indoor pool in the hotel next door. If I am able to return, I will definitely ask if they have any truly spicy sauce that the Missouri population fears. So, admittedly, I like the food at Sugarfire better, but there is something to be said for having table service. When I'm in the mood for taking my time over dinner and having a server and a full cocktail menu, this is the spot I hit up. Mr. H. and I almost always get the deal that comes with several meats and like 3 sides ( I can't remember exactly, but it's a lot of food and plenty for 2 people). I've had a couple of appetizers here that have been good and the cocktail menu/beer selection is sufficient. I have had plenty of pretty good meals here, nothing has really blown me away, but I've never had anything terrible and the service has always been good. This place is probably really 3.5 stars. You mean I have to give you at least one star? I had to park in the casino parking lot with no lines for parking... Passing thru the smokers lounge downstairs was disgusting. If you are going to herd the classless nicotine suckers, at least cage them on the other side of the entrance, but to make a non-smoker thread the needle between smokers shuts this place down completely...... Oh yeah, the food.... On a scale of one to ten, I'd give it a three... I've traveled the country, and have had BBQ in many states. This place reminds me of a chain joint, trying not to be a chain joint. No taste, sauce was bland, and overall was an unremarkable dinner. I will not be back. I might be slightly addicted to Hendricks BBQ. Why do I say that? Because it's so good that it makes me do things I don't necessarily want to do. First, I'm not really a BBQ fan (but I keep coming back). Second, I live in South City, 5-10 minutes away from some of the best dining in the St. Louis (i.e. I don't EVER drive to St. Charles to go out to eat). So what's the deal!?! Well, first let's start with atmosphere. Very cool. You feel like you're dining on the shanti somewhere, slurping beer from mason jars and wiping your hands with checkered napkins. The background music was bluegrass covers of rock songs, which I thought was extra cool. Second, the food. Again, not a huge BBQ fan...but it's so good! The first time I went was for a catered work function, so I got to try everything. The pulled pork was the star. I've had better brisket (cough, cough SugarFire). Another thing that stood out was their shrimp and grits - oh my goodness, so good. I swore I'd return. That I did - for lunch and, although disappointed that they didn't have their huge full menu - got a chance to try a bunch of stuff with their $11 special of one meat, 3 sides. The portions are small, so the 3 sides made it just right. If you want lots of meat, this is not for you (maybe 2-3 ounces is what you get). I got the pulled pork again and it was heaven. I can't believe I'm saying this, but the best side was the creamed spinach. The mac and cheese and corn casserole were also good. We got a free app with Yelp check in and tried the BBQ nachos. Although beautiful, I wound up not being a fan due to the overly sweet baked beans that overtook the entire dish. Service on this trip left a lot to be desired, but luckily it wasn't that busy so it didn't turn into a disaster. All-in-all, this is some good food, with a unique atmosphere. If I could, I've give Hendricks 4 1/2 stars. This is pretty basic Barbeque, done very well. I like the vibe of this place, I like the music (think early '60's blues/R&B/roots music and more), the food, the beer selections, pretty much everything. I came here on the spur of the moment (just the way I like). I've gotten the meatloaf before with some sort of blueberry BBQ glacé, which sounded really bizarre, but was delicious (OK, so maybe not exactly 'basic' BBQ). I've also gotten some sort of sampler meal (in my case, it was brisket and pulled pork). Note to my non-red meat-eating friends: chicken and turkey are available! Today, I ordered the "Meat + 3" lunch special. As it suggests, you pick one meat and three sides, of which there are many. I chose brisket + creamed spinach, cole slaw and greens served with bacon. Apparently it's actually Meat + 3 + 1, because in addition to my choices, they also included a small, delicious baked apple dish as well. A perfect small treat to a great lunch. (I should mention that for lunch, the sides are not big, and that 3 sides of this size is a great way to sample several different ones without later thinking "did I really eat 3 sides?! More than a taste though - just perfect.) Could it get better? Yes.... Yes it could! I'm glad that you asked. When I checked in on Yelp I received a coupon for a free appetizer or drink. I was going to just have a glass (here, a glass Mason jar) of ice water, but if Hendricks is offering, sure, I'll have a beverage too. Overall, this was an amazing restaurant. Customer service was great, food was great, and the food came out fast. The only thing I disliked were the cheese grits. They were a different kind of cut, I'm guessing. But we had The Whole Shebang. Definitely big enough to fill up 2 people! It was my first time and I will most definitely be back! read more

If the whole wait staff work like Tyler, this place will become my favorite. The STL sauce is much more like a Memphis vinegar based sauce and reminds me of Corky's. We enjoy this place and have been there several times. Great atmosphere, nice vibe, and the food is pretty good. We usually get a three meat plate with a couple sides, and that is enough for both my wife and I. The bbq isn't quite as good as say, Sugarfire or Pappy's, but it is still tasty. The pulled pork is the best, the brisket has a nice peppery Texas style rub, but can be a little chewy. The St Louis ribs are good also. Service was fast. There's a full bar. My wife had their Summertime Gimlet based on cumber infused gin. Very nice, but pricey for a cocktail. On tap beers weren't that good. The prices were high for bbq on a metal platter. My wife & I both had bbq sandwiches. The rolls were a bit dry and on the small side for the price. Meat was good, but again the sandwich was smaller than I'd expected. The sweet potato fries were plentiful and tasty. My wife didn't care for the cole slaw. The beans were good, but skimpy. I liked the sweet potato and pecans. We split a blueberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream. Great ice cream, OK cobbler. It was fresh baked and large, but needed some more sweetness. Four of us had dinner here tonight. Three of the 4 of us had satisfactory meals. Mine, the brisket sandwich, got sent back because it was cold. Much colder than room temperature. Actually, the BBQ sauce in the bottles on the table were warmer than my sandwich. The waiter guy did a great job trying to make things right. However, we got no visit from the mgr on duty nor any effort to make amends. Atmosphere was great, drinks were fine, server was very good. Even after my sandwich was replaced, my food was on the low-average side. The server was 4-stars+. But remember, I was the only one of the 4 of us who had issues. Pretty good BBQ place. I certainly enjoyed the outdoor patio, especially that it faces east and is shaded for dinner. Service left something to be desired, though. Our server was very nice. However, our appetizer wasn't put in for the kitchen - so the food came out first. The server apologized and said he had totally forgotten to enter it. We got it shortly afterward, and it was at no charge. We also waited quite a bit before we initially saw the server, and checking on us was kind of sketchy. I think part of the problem was that there didn't seem to be anyone dedicated to the patio diners. Each table had a different server that was also working the inside tables. Granted, it wasn't crowded outside at the time (about 4 or 5 tables), but still...rearrange your work flow. The food was generally good, so I'm going with a solid 3 star rating. It wasn't knock your socks off better than other BBQ places, but I'd recommend it to others. Hush puppies, while they came late as appetizers, were good and dense & hot. Dipping sauce was homemade - basically mayo with some spices added, but needed a little bit of zing or heat. The St Louis ribs were yummy. Quite tender, almost falling off the bone - but still had enough chew and stick to the bone that they weren't mushy. Didn't seem to have been pre-boiled. I liked the light smoky flavor throughout the meat, and the slightly charred sauce covering them. Pulled pork had a good flavor, but was just a bit dry. Brisket was tender, with enough fat to give it flavor. The sides: Greens with bacon was excellent - full leaf greens was a pleasant surprise, with just enough vinegar for a little tartness, and the big smoky bacon chunks were generous throughout. Baked/BBQ beans were also well prepared, if typical. Sweet potato casserole, with pecans and crunchy topping was marvelous - almost could have been dessert. Speaking of dessert...seems like every BBQ place now has homemade desserts - which I like. Hendrick's was out of half of their choices, unfortunately the more desirable ones, but better to only have it fresh I guess. So we got a blueberry cobbler. This was disappointing. The blueberries seemed to have come directly from a can (little and dark, rather than the larger and less dark purple that comes fresh), and the topping was thick & dense. While the single size skillet it came in was very hot, there were still cool spots in the blueberries, and the topping was cooked but could have used a couple more minutes. I guess they make up a supply and keep them in the fridge. Either the oven was set too high for even heating throughout, or the cobbler just wasn't left in quite long enough. read more

While the food was above average, and was served very quickly after ordering, we waited over 20 minutes for a table for two, when there were at LEAST 17 open tables. I spoke with the GM and was told that they had a lot of reservations and that the kitchen was backed up, both of which were BS excuses. When we left the lobby was crammed with new parties, and the same number of empty tables laid waiting. There is no excuse for the poor management. We will not be back! read more

Overall delighted with this experience. Ate here on a business trip so we tried a wide variety of the food and drink. We sat outside on a hot day, but being near to the river there was a nice breeze and large fans set up which made it quite comfortable. Service: Stellar! The servers seemed to know the menu well and were happy to ask for further details of managers/bartenders/kitchen whenever we asked a detailed question. Appetizers: Had the fried green tomatoes and chips. Chips were great to have around the table for the duration of the meal and the tomatoes were friend up nice and crisp Drinks: We sampled a wide variety of drink offerings... Beer, moonshine, cocktails and even the Boozy shakes. All of it was delightful, Uncle Earl was wonderfully refreshing, the boozy shake was very boozy but very tasty. Every drink tasted freshly made and you could tell a lot of thought was given to the ingredients Dinner: I don't have a lot of experience with "real" BBQ, but everything we ate was quite tasty, and if airlines didn't have the 3 oz rules we would have walked out with the St Louis BBQ sauce, it was amazing! read more
