Heng's Kitchen is located at the very left of the food court of Mekong Plaza. I met up with a friend and her husband, and my main goal was to satisfy my XLB craving! Order at the cashier, grab a number, and food will be served to you. Needless to say, I ordered the 4. Shanghai pork mini soup dumplings which were $10.25 for 6 dumplings. I would've loved less dough, more soup, overall bigger portion size (larger dumplings or more of them). Otherwise, the soup itself was tasty. We also ordered the 14. Chongqing Fried Spicy Chicken $13.95, which was a platter of boneless chicken and peppers. I was very impressed with the crisp exterior but soft/juicy interior of the chicken. I'm not usually a spice person, but I was left feeling tingly but not in pain and not numb. Overall I found Heng's Kitchen to be disproportionately pricey given the taste and portion sizes. I'm pretty critical and discerning about my XLB, and this place did not totally satisfy my craving, although I was pleasantly surprised about the chicken. I was so hungry, I forgot to take pictures of my food. I ordered the beef and celery dim sum dumplings, and a stir fried beef. And a litre of cola. The dumplings were pretty good, I practically inhaled them. The beef came out orange, which is not bad, but I'm horrible at handling spiciness. I was worried, but I started to eat it and the flavor was sooo good!!! Yes it was spicy, but I just kept putting food in my mouth. The flavor was so good, my mind didn't even care about the spiciness! I got it with the white rice, so I had a little buffer while eating it. I knoowwwww y'all are lacking taste buds if you think this Chinese place it any good. Maybe I'm a snob because I lived in places inCalifornia where we had so many Chinese restaurant gems in the San Gabriel Valley. We ordered some of the most basic things, and it was just NOT it. I really wanted to support this business and give them a shot, but it was disappointing. Why is it so hard to find good Chinese food in Arizona? How do you mess up on a green onion pancake? It was burned and dry to a crisp. My eggplant as microwaved and soggy, the dumplings tasted frozen, and the beef noodle soup didn't taste fresh, the noodles tasted microwaved because of the texture (maybe it because wasn't, but the noodles didn't taste fresh). Located in the food court inside of Mekong Plaza. It's more of a takeout spot but if you want to dine there in the food court you can. Service is fast, friendly, and they were very helpful in answering all our questions. You don't find many places like this anymore, where the food is good, the portion sizes are borderline generous, and the prices are affordable. We decided to order some dishes to share that we thought would be better to eat fresh there, than to take out. We ordered the juicy steamed pork dumplings and the braised pork noodle soup. The dumplings were good, standard, as far as soup dumplings go. The braised pork noodle soup on the other hand was delicious. The broth was lighter than we were expecting, however, the braised pork itself, was melt in your mouth tender, and had great flavor to it. The only thing about this place is that I wouldn't recommend it to people who are vegan or vegetarian. Most of their vegetable dishes come with either egg, shrimp, or is cooked in oyster sauce. Came on a Sunday night at 6pm. Originally went to another soup dumpling place nearby, but they were out of XLB. Just happened to see that this place had them on their menu! Straight forward service from the lady at the counter, not friendly nor rude haha. She just wants your order/payment and nothing else. Went with a few orders of the XLB, Sweet and Sour Pork Ribs, Beef Chow Fun, and the Pork Potstickers. She gave me a number and off I went to one of the many tables available. We were one of their three groups. Food came out quickly and looked decent. Upon tasting, we were kind of surprised that the dishes all tasted well above average! Conflicted about this one. Cheap takeout - 4 items for about $42!! Food was OK just not as advertised... Heng's is located in the food court of Mekong Plaza. Plenty of seating if you want to eat there. Service was fine. Ordered the beef noodles - the broth was nice but it came with minimum veggies and and only 2 pieces of beef. The spicy boiled fish was good but I'm used to the Sichuan style with a more liquid sauce - this one was thick. Great with white rice but they charge you for rice...many places give you some white rice for free with your order. The potstickers were not as advertised. On their poster they had long style potstickers and my husband was super excited because he can usually only find them when he goes back to Taiwan. Well, they were not that style at all! The yang zhou fried rice also wasn't as expected. It was OK but should usually come with a variety of proteins and finer cut toppings. Great place for Chinese food you shouldn't miss. I went in Mekong Market to grab some groceries the other day and came across to this little "Kitchen" in the food court. I ordered a very Cantonese dish which I considered unusual to find in US Chinese restaurant. It turned out that the dish was well made. It isn't the traditional "河粉 He Fen" (Thick Rice Noodles) that I expected. It's thicker than the ones I had back in Canton. And also very interesting choice of vegetables besides bean sprouts in this dish that I found a little different than what I had back in my hometown Canton. But beef was so tender and tasty and the noodles are favored really well. I would give this whole experience a 4-star based on the authenticity&Taste. Also it's a place you get to order and have a quick bite at the food court so there's no proper seatings like we usually do in restaurants. Just a reminder for people that goes in for a try. This is my second time trying this walk-up counter location inside Mekong Plaza. I don't recall what I ordered before but the beef and broccoli I ordered today I will not soon forget. This place is crazy. Tonight I went there trying to order dinner around 6. Apparently they had a huge backlog of orders and people were getting impatient after waiting 30mins for food. So I got in line trying to order, but the bald dude saw me and decided he didn't want to take order from people like me for whatever reason. So he promptly shouted "we are closed now" at 6pm on a Saturday. Sure, I understand so I walked away along with a couple like me. Once we ordered the food from the Vietnamese place in the food court instead and sat down, they decided to turn the light back on and start to take orders from other customers 10 mins later. This was shocking discrimination. I've never been more disgusted in my time in Phoenix and this is truly a low bar. Heng's makes some of the most generic dishes with tiny portions. On top of that, you might need to wait 30-45 mins for food or you might not be permitted to order food depending on their mood. read more

We have been missing out...but no more! This gem is hidden in the back corner of Mekong Plaza in Mesa and once you find it, you'll be so glad you did. They simply have the freshest noodles and wonton we have ever had the pleasure to experience. We now have tried several things on the menu including Beef & Scallions, General Tsos, and String Beans but THE BEST THINGS WE HAVE EATEN are the Spicy Chicken Noodles and the Spicy Wonton. This is a dish that I am familiar with and I know it's supposed to be spicy. It's supposed to be fiery hot and mouth numbing. The dish was developed with good flavors, the fish was cooked to perfection and it did have some heat and some numbing but was the mildest version I ever had of this dish by very far so I would never order it again here. This is a tiny stand in the food court in the Asian market. You enter on the right entrance and go all the way straight, where you'll see it on your left. They have lunch specials for $10, so I got the sweet and sour chicken for pickup. It was really good, but the portion is smaller than what you get elsewhere. The entire dish is half rice, but you do get an egg roll on the side. Overall, okay place for Americanized Chinese food. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. read more

Their Juicy Steamed Pork Mini Dumplings (Xiao Long Bao) are consistently served hot and fresh. The Dan Dan Noodles have an amazing aroma and come out piping hot. Combined with a bit of spicy heat, it's sure to bring a sweat to your brow. The line moves quickly, especially when you consider this "Mom and Pop" restaurant usually has no more than two people working at a time. Be prepared to wait a bit for the food which, in most cases, is made to order. I very rarely give rave reviews but this is one of the most underrated places I've ever been to. It's a bit hard to find in the food area at Mekong, it's in the corner and doesn't look like much. It's run by a husband and wife duo who are so incredibly kind and nice. There's complimentary water at the counter too. Ok, so food is INCREDIBLE. The jajang noodles had a super robust flavor and had actual pieces of meat instead of ground meat. Good fat to lean ratio. Kungpao chicken was super fresh and tasty. Lots of meat too and wasn't just vegetables. Eggplant was my favorite. I don't know how but it is just so good. If you get one thing, get this. Serving sizes are generous. One entree is plenty for one person. Each dish is about $10 or under so reasonable as well. Give this place a try!! read more

10/19/19 I've deprived Heng's Kitchen of their rightful 5-stardom for too long. Heng's is clearly my favorite Chinese food restaurant in Arizona thus far, so I ought to acknowledge that! That said, I must admit our dinner experience on 10/19/19 was not perfect. Our server did not give us any plates, leaving us to munch off the platters upon which our entrees arrived. Furthermore, the dim sum restaurant a stone's throw away had an obnoxious live band whose off-key singer devastated the ambiance. I forgive these inconveniences, however, because Heng's has -- in all my visits -- presented 100% solid cuisine every time. Such was the case with our order this evening: 1. House-Made Juicy Steamed Pork Mini Dumplings (#15) 2. Shanghai Shredded Pork Chow Mein (#49) 3. Fried Eggplant w/ Homemade Sauce (#99) This was a winning banquet all around, so we were willing to look past our atmospheric grievances. When it comes to food and expedience, Heng's is as good as it gets. My only real complaint is that they don't have four walls to call their own. I wish Heng's Kitchen occupied an establishment preferably next door to my apartment. However, as that's a longshot, the Mekong food court will have to do for now. Transported to food courts in Singapore. When I walked into Mekong Plaza, the shops and food aromas of Asia flooded in. I was strangely at home. I was craving Taiwanese beef noodle. Thanks to Genie Yelper Karen W., she granted my first wish this Spring Break. Heng's Kitchen joins other indoor food court stalls in Mekong Plaza. I perused through the menu and decided quickly on #38 Spicy Beef Noodles. Alert: This soup packs a punch. The broth goes down easy but the heat comes on like a flash from the back. The tendon and round cuts of meat were tender and flavorful. The soup was fairly robust. It was packed full of spinach and other vegetables, but my favorite topping was the pickled greens. Was it the best I've had, the soup could have been a little more well developed, but it certainly hit the spot and satiated my craving. Karen had the Szechuan fish with rice. I enjoyed it. It was nice to see HK deliver different flavors and textures in their dishes. Price tag: A large portion of noodles for slightly under $8. I love the selection of Chinese food here. It's a mix of different regions, from Shanghai style dumplings to Sichuan water boiled fish. I got an order of xiao long bao to go ($6.25, labeled as "Home-made juicy steamed pork mini dumplings"). There were 6 dumplings per order, and while most of them had the lovely savory broth that is indicative of these type of dumplings, 2 of them were dry (Although the meat inside was still tender and juicy). The dumplings were flavorful and tasted fresh. They get bonus points for including a prepackaged plastic spork in my to-go bag (Sporks are cool) :). This is a small mom and pop run operation, and the lady co-owner speaks both Mandarin and English.
