Herbies was one of my fave eats in the keys. Its a little place, almost a dive, with a bar area and a separate dining area that feels outside but has fans to keep you cooler. It has a big blackboard that guests can draw on. We did, had a drawing contest/ it was a blast. The server was great. She was young (not even 21) she said, but super friendly and quick. I tried the mahi sandwich. It was surprisingly yummy. Great breading (fried) and still had a good flavor. Fries were good. And they have a good beer selection. LOVED LOVED LOVED Herbie's Bar and Chowder House. Such a cool 'hole in the wall' type of place and the food was honestly our favorite meal of the whole trip! Yes, I said it. Lots of craft beer on draft which was great. We started with the peeled and deveined shrimp which was so fresh and the shrimp were so big compared to other places. There are plenty of restaurants on the road between Miami and Key West, so go ahead and resist the temptation to stop somewhere else and wait until you get to Marathon. On our last visit we each started with a beer. The craft selection isn't huge, but the choices are all excellent. Whoever owns or runs this place values quality over quantity. We started with the pretzel & beer cheese, fresh baked soft bread and creamy cheese dip...vacations are for splurging, right? Pluses: Open later in the evening. Menu is basic and small but acceptable; there is a reasonable diversity but not so many options that you question the quality. Apps,three or so salads, a couple of soups, oysters three or four different ways, a small variety of burgers and Po'boy. They have daily specials which offer more variety. When I was there, it was a yellow snapper, a Mexican-style fish taco, and crab bisque. I tried the crab bisque--which was very nice with a different texture, like the crab had been processed down. It worked. Nice flavor. I felt like avoiding fried foods, so I tried the Cuban style beans and rice for a side. It was adequate--could have used a tad more flavoring, and not just spicy. Maybe more bay or pork? I just added some salt and finished it, no worries. Sometimes the same thing happens to my Cuban beans at home. There are three sitting areas, an outside but screened in area with picnic tables, an inside with what looks like 2-tops and another area. One wait staff was assigned to each, which made for slower service. The server made up for it in friendliness, though. I appreciated that she gave me a couple 'samplers' of two of the more unusual ciders--passion fruit and pineapple cider. I went with pineapple. Price was reasonable for the food and the service. The restaurant front is like a dive but you won't be disappointed. I had yellow tail, conch chowder and my wife has the crab cakes all awesomeness. I absolutely love this place!! We have been here several times now. The first time we were here the chef came out to talk to us and he was such a kind hearted man! We really enjoyed our conversation with him about the meals he served to Guy Fierri. The chicken smash is hands-down the best item on the menu. I've had the Tuna tacos a couple of times now. They also have really good clam chowder. I would highly suggest coming here. We also came here one night for our friends birthday and they were showing a movie outside and it was such a nice surprise.
