Tip of the day for this restaurant; fire your attitude ridden b-tch of a waitress! We came in on Monday night (7 of us). As soon as we gave our drink order, your waitress started with her huffing and puffing. There was a Middle Eastern family across from us that was letting their kids run rampant and it was irritating her and everyone else and so we believed that was her problem. We have 2 people in our group with gluten allergies (not fad dieters), and I asked her if I could get a cheeseburger with Lettuce instead of a bun. She snapped at me with a sarcastic, loud NO! I just sat there with my mouth open. She did the same with the other Celiac in the group and she was just asking what was safe. Finally we all ordered. We needed new drinks and that seemed to be an issue for her as well. We had already decided she wasn't getting the kind of tip we normally leave. When it was time for the checks to come out, she had a fit and started ranting about why didn't we tell her before.... WE DID! WHEN WE SAT DOWN!! She all but refused to separate the checks and finally, one of us took the whole check to make her stop telling us off. We all threw some cash in a pile on the table for the tip. Then, we found out why she didn't want to separate the checks. She wouldn't have got the 20% premium tip that the 7-top afforded her. She didn't have to work for the tip, she KNEW she was gonna get it without having to do what waitresses normally have to do... BE NICE TO YOUR GUESTS! Needless to say, we took the cash off the table. That broad was not getting 35% when she didn't deserve 10%! WE WILL NOT BE BACK! read more

Waited a couple of days for this place to open, it was well worth the wait. The scratch made menu is fantastic and specials of smoked wings and ribs were amazing. The craft beers were ice cold and bountiful. High marks for the clam chowder and Lemon Ice Box treat to finish the meal. read more

The best food around. The conch fritters and clam chowder can't be beat. The tacos and fish/chips were amazing. The chips are like truffle fries and the fish is PERFECTLY battered/fried. The food was good . However the bartender created a scene when we mentioned that the beer she poured was mostly foam. She then began making fun of myself and my wife in front of this entire little bar . It made the eating environment very uncomfortable and forced us to make an early departure out of the restaurant. Before we left The other waitress felt so bad that she apologized and gave us a dessert on the house . Management should make note on this situation . Not appropriate in this day in age . As the name implies, Herbie's makes great chowder, but the appeal of this eatery does not end there. The first time I went, I was planning to get something conventional, but then I discovered that the chowder of the day (that's a thing here) was black bean and pork chowder. I couldn't say no to that; who even knew that you could make chowders out of things that walk on land! That was a good soup. The second time, I had the New England Clam chowder. I'm a chowder fan from New England, and let me tell you: this was a good clam chowder. We brought in our own freshly caught snapper, and ordered half of it pan-seared and half of it fried. It was brought to us mostly unseasoned, which surprised me. The rationale seemed to be that if people bring in their own fish, they really want to taste the fish, and to that end they provided a tasty pepper-jelly sauce on the side. I respect that, but it would've been a better meal had they at least given us the option to have it blackened (we did ask: blackening was not an option for cook-your-catch). Lane snapper is pretty tasteless. As mentioned by other reviewers, Herbie's has an unusual layout, but it's not a big deal. The small rooms can make it a little loud, though. My family found the TV distracting, but that might just have been for the room with the bar in it. Herbie's employs truly model waiters. Always smiling; always friendly; always attentive; always refilling our lemonade. I would love to come back here, but unfortunately I was just visiting the keys. read more

Fire roasted oysters were the best I've had - perfectly cooked to medium rare. Wings were awesome - tasty, crispy on the outside, moist on the inside. Pretzel and beer cheese dip was also a star, nice and crispy in the outside, soft doughy bread on the inside. Key lime pie was as good as any in these parts. Didn't get to try the conch fritters. Nice variety of craft beers on tap! Steamed clams were good, but a little too overlooked. Chowders were ok, a little too watery. Service is average. read more

This was by far the worst dining experience we have ever had. While the waitress was friendly enough, the food was HORRIBLE!! I got the fish tacos. The fish was over fried and they put pickle relish on it. Weird. Another person in our party ordered the pretzels...burned. My daughter ordered the loaded baked potato soup. It looked like sausage gravy. And tasted sweet. We were unable to identify anything in it...including the potatoes. They were asked to omit the bacon, but they couldn't because it comes in the mix. Blah!! Another in our party ordered oysters. They were out of them. So she ordered the fish and chips and asked to swap the chips for mashed potatoes. They could not because they were out of mashed potatoes. Only to come back out of the kitchen five minutes later saying they had some mashed potatoes left from last nights "special". Ok..whatever. Well, they bring out her over fried fish and a bowl of mash potatoes with a side of onion gravy "to make them taste better". Huh? My younger daughter ordered the veggie burger and fries. Why in God's name would I order a fried chicken dish in the Keys? What am I thinking? Ms. Willie Mae would slap me silly for such an offense. But after tasting the Smashed Chicken, I am absolved of my sins. Overlooking the fact that the chicken is a boneless breast (the horrors!!!!), the fry was perfectly crispy and the chicken moist (soaked in buttermilk is the technique). The serve it over a bed of taters smashed on the grill with some veggies (green beans). Poured over the top is a rich country gravy. All together it's quite delicious, and when I say quite delicious I mean you'll want to bathe in the crispy saucy goodness for all eternity. This is a funky little place with tasty food and an impressive selection of beers and cider, not limited to local brews. Once we figured out where the front door was ... uhhhh ... things were fantastic. Bartender took the time to describe some brews and recommended some food. We Sat at the bar to eat dinner. New England chowder was creamy with nice chunks of tender clam. Smoked fish dip was also tasty. Don't stay too long or you might drink too much beer and eat too much fried chicken but at least you'll die happy like I did. read more

We went on Christmas Eve and had a great dinner. The favorite in our crowd was the Shrimp Caesar Wrap. We also ordered the Crabbie Patty Burger, Mahi sandwich, and the Shrimp Po-Boy. It seems they make all their sauces which were tasty. Great fries and onion rings too! We do not drink so did not partake in the Craft Beer. Even skipping that, we enjoyed the atmosphere and the waitstaff which rarely happens for my family. read more

We went for dinner and it was amazing! We were there for the clam chowder and were pleasantly surprised by the beer choices. Then the bartender recommended the chicken and smashed potato and holy moly, we were blown away! It's a Nashville style hot chicken breast and I would've never imagined a chicken breast could be so tender yet so perfectly fried and delicious. It was served with a side of "gravy" that is to die for. To top off the meal, the owner/cook came out to chat and ensure we enjoyed our meal. I really loved Herbies. We have been coming to the Keys for 10 years and this was one of the best restaurants we have found. It's clean and cool inside with a nice relaxed feel. My wife loved her Mahi sandwich. I had the smoked buffalo wings which were outrageously good. The basket of shoestring fries was huge and great to split. I look forward to going back again read more

I try to go here at least once a week. I love their food and the service is nice. Every time I go, I'm remembered when I return. The waitresses are very nice and always cheerful. It's definitely not a classy joint, but when it comes to a good meal, I would recommend this place as a go to spot for a good bite. And the tuna sliders are amazing! I get them every time. Local or snowbird, you have to eat here if you haven't already. This small place has earned the five stars from me. I look forward to eating there next week if not sooner. :) read more

Peter, Marathon was missing a joint with craft beers and incredible food and you saved us! My beer loving friends talked me in to stopping here and I was impressed with the 30+ craft beers on the menu. Most of these craft beers come from FL breweries and change out frequently, so there is always something new to try. We have become regulars since they opened up again and are loving that we can take home a Growler of our favorite beer with us. They cover the seafood basics you would expect to see on the menu, crab cakes, conch fritters, ceviche, etc. and they are all good. The specials are where they are getting creative and making my mouth happy. Espresso rubbed Rib Eye was a dinner special I would eat again! The Crabby Patty...crab cake over a burger topped with roasted red peppers and Havarti cheese...yes please!!! The Bacon appetizer is something super fun and unique...runs out fast, but is super good! The french fries and onion rings are great! We have been really happy with eating and drinking here and will continue to support this great new addition to town! read more

While on vacation, we stopped in for dinner with our 2 kids, ages 11 & 14. Kids ordered chowder, which was very good. We ordered pretzels and beer cheese, also good. This is where our experience turned. I totally get that good food takes time. I don't mind waiting...it's an opportunity to try more beers, right? Over an hour later, our food arrived. Mom: black and blue salad, steak ordered medium. Salad arrived with steak still mooin' (rare) with a small pile of lettuce, two quarters of a tomato and three slices of cucumber. Lol!
