For months, I saw Herbie's from my office window and when I had some time to kill I would look at their menu. The items listed on menu sounded delicious, but I did not visit Herbie's until recently and I am so glad I finally did. I was seated relatively fast and my waiters were superb throughout. Their wine/cocktail menu is plentiful, so you're likely going to find something you like. I started off with a glass of Malbec and I had absolutely no complaints. Personally, I am not a huge soup fan, but I decided to give their French Onion a try because I was really hungry. It was scorching hot when it came out, but when it finally cooled down it was very tasty! Following my soup, I had the Smoked Short Ribs because it was listed as a "popular dish" on Yelp and Yelp rarely steers me wrong. Those short ribs were so good I had to do a little dance in my chair after the first bite before I inhaled the rest. Only complaint I have is that I wish the portion was bigger because I was still hungry. However, this was perfectly fine because I ordered the Oatmeal Raisin Half-Baked Cookie for dessert. I don't like raisins at all, but that was a damn good cookie. It was soft and gooey, and the ice cream on top rescued me from burning my mouth when I was too impatient to let the cookie cool off. After that meal I went home and slept like a baby after a day at the park. Had a wonderful experience and I plan to explore other items on the menu sooner than later. There are an abundance of options to choose from when deciding on where to eat in Downtown Clayton, but I highly recommend giving this place a try. read more

We met some friends for breakfast while traveling. The food was meh. I like the pot roast hash from Bob Evans, but it was removed from their menu a few years ago. I was hoping the Tenderloin beef hash would be just as good. But unfortunately no. The beef wasn't tender and it had a lemony taste to it, which was an odd flavor to go with beef. The waiter wasn't warm and welcoming either. Not a people person. He had a hard time smiling and seemed irritated that he had to serve us. His demeanor made us feet uncomfortable. He actually threw out an I told you so comment..... Really?! We won't stop there again. Probably should stick the creperie across the street. read more

Friends don't take friends to Herbie's. And yet, they do. So, I keep coming back, even though I'm consistently underwhelmed and overcharged. Generally, stuff is just way too salty. They try hard to be "interesting - as if adding lots of surprise elements would somehow justify the inflated prices. The most annoying thing is how they fall down on the basics. I ordered a hamburger for lunch "medium rare." It came to me raw, so I had to send it back (generally not my m.o.). It came back overcooked. Come on guys, it's a hamburger for chrissake. Do you know how to cook a hamburger? Nothing here is memorable, except the pretentious murmur of the power elite, singing their hymns of self-satisfaction. The short ribs were touted as a favorite dish, but was so fatty it was inedible, truffle fries were heavily over salted, and steak was overcooked. We came on a Sunday night, it was my birthday and my favorite restaurant was booked so we came to Herbie's. When we first came in the hostess booth was empty it took around 2-3 minutes for some to realize that we were waiting. That was extremely disappointing because we had 2 older people, one of which was in a walker so waiting around to be served was a disappointing start to the evening. Overall though, it ended on a high note, I usually ordered off menu so did the group I was with. I had the strip steak and my partner had the Maine lobster off menu special and it was great! I recommend getting the cheese board and a soup to begin with because it's just a classic way to start the evening in my opinion with friends. read more

I visited on 6/25 around 6:45. We ordered calamari as an appetizer which took around 30mins to arrive. When it did arrive it was warm. Our main courses also took quite a while to be served, they were also warm. The waiter could clearly see that we'd been waiting awhile but he did not make an attempt to check on the status of the food. I ordered the Airline Chicken and it was horrible! The chicken, mashed potatoes and asparagus were flavorless. The chicken was not cooked well. I barely ate anything on the plate, the server did ask if I wanted a box, which I declined but he did not inquire further. There were also a nice amount of gnats flying around. Went to Herbie's last night. The positives: Nice patio outside with nicely spaced seating. It was a beautiful night to sit outside so that is what we did. We had reservations but they had plenty of seating inside of the restaurant. The interior of the restaurant is pretty. They have a nice bar and a TV if you want to watch sports. Our server Zachary was really nice and attentive. We ordered drinks and it came out quickly. The negatives: We ordered mussels and our entrees. The mussels were taking forever. Our server came over to apologize, said they were coming. Well, they came but about 15 minutes later. The manager came and apologized and said she would comp them. That was nice! Right after we got the mussels and my salad, here come the entrees. You cannot bring entrees right after you bring the appetizers. It's too overwhelming and your entree just gets cold. Our server came and apologized, we said it was okay but we weren't exactly happy. We ordered scallops, salmon and halibut. Halibut was one of the specials. It came with risotto that looked like it was cooked with beets because it was pink! It was weird and really sweet. His halibut looked good but he said it was dry. My salmon was a crispy skin with hoisin glaze. It was dry as a bone and the glaze was burned if it had been good, it would have been delicious. The Kimchi rice was just okay. The scallops were the star of the show. Beautifully cooked. The mussels were good, a little gritty but the broth and bread was exceptional. We were offered a free round of drinks but by that time I had already had two glasses of wine so we passed. The most pleasant part of the experience was that they comped almost all of the food. I was shocked but that is what a well managed restaurant does. I did not notice any other diners having issues with their food. They have a new chef. I would not say "don't go here", it's a nice place. I think we just ordered at a time when the kitchen was backed up. We did give our server a really good tip. Not his fault for kitchen mishaps. My party and I came for brunch at noon, and it is currently 1:30 and no food has come out, and our coffees have been filled up once. Groups of equal sizes have come in and sat near us, and have already been served. I talked to the manager saying it was ridiculous and asked him to check where our food was and all he said was "yes sir". It's been 10 minutes and he has walked past our table multiple times without acknowledging our presence. Never ever come here, go to Scottish Arms in central west end instead if you want bottomless mimosas for brunch. Edit: the food came out finally, luke warm. The manager never even apologized for the wait; what a terrible manager, which is a shame because the place is really nice and the food isn't the worst. Now waiting 20 minutes for the check. I have never left no tip, but today is the day. I am very very tempted to just leave. Now, we've been double charged for something. read more

This was my first time dining at Herbie's. We had reservations for brunch, and when we arrived, the front room was empty. Apparently, they were putting all guests in the back room, which wasn't as nice. The waiter took a while to greet us, and even longer to take our order. We then waited more than 45 minutes for our food and had to ask for an update twice. We had plans after brunch, so by the time we got our food we barely had any time to eat. The restaurant didn't appear busy, and we are assuming the waiter might have forgotten to put our order in. I had the tenderloin hash, and it was very good. This is a beautiful restaurant in Clayton. Huge indoor area and beautiful patio lit up with fairy lights. I had the French onion soup and Caesar salad, while my friends got the risotto and the burger. Everything was delicious. Our wine pairing was also perfect. Would love to come again! High quality food, great service and nice atmosphere in Clayton. Went with a group (8) on Monday evening at 6 pm. We had a private room that included 5 servers. We ordered appetizers, drinks, entrees, desserts and dessert drinks. I had the scallops for an entree and it was great, loved the display. Where do I start... OMG what a fantastic dinning experience!!! Our waitress, Kristen was very attentive but didn't hover over us. She really added a level of enjoyment to the evening with her genuine smile and friendliness. The Executive Chef visited the dinning room giving us the opportunity to chitchat with him for a few minutes. We were torn on which deserts to order, he recommended the Bread Pudding & Fritters. I don't typically enjoy bread pudding but when I say Wow, I mean WOW!!! It more than exceeded my expectations. We ordered the following. Appetizer: Beef Carpaccio, yummy! Dinner: Filet Mignon, Beef Wellington and the special, Morel Mushroom Pasta. All three dishes cooked to perfection. Desert: Bread Pudding, Fritters and Gooey Butter Cake, all orgasmically delicious! The setting is ideal, and it's a great patio in downtown Clayton, but honestly, you find yourself disappointed that this is the restaurant that occupies such a prime location. Service is okay, food and menu are subpar (and have been for years), and the vibe is commensurate with the food. I went for lunch with a friend, our first visit to Herbie's. My friend drinks wine, and we immediately noticed that they don't do a generous pour, though it was a good Cabernet. I began with a cup of the soup of the day, much encouraged by a very tasty tomato pepper soup. But that was about the end of the positives. I ordered a Salade Nicoise. There are a variety of ways to serve the tuna on this salad, and Herbie's chose to grill and slice the fish, which is the nicest way--but the tuna had no tasty char on the outside, and pretty much seemed raw throughout. It was furthermore so fishy tasting as to be nearly inedible. I don't mean that mild tang reminiscent of a salty sea, but an almost inedible creek-water fishiness. The salad portion was mostly green beans, a few peppers and onions, the usual boiled egg, all in a fairly undistinguished vinaigrette. My friend had a filet, which she ordered medium rare. It was tender, and tasty enough, but much closer to well done. I often order my steaks medium rather than medium rare, and this was done well past that. She had asked for the seasonal vegetables rather than a potato, and it was a huge heap of green beans. Did they get a deal on green beans that day? I don't know if we'll go back. Maybe give it a while, see if we hear something about new management or a new chef, but at over $100 for lunch, this was a lot of disappointment. read more

I don't know what happened to this restaurant. Dinner menu is for five entrees, all strange selections, even sandwiches for dinner. we were shocked , could not find anything normal to eat, so just had starters. Waiter was argumentative, the toast with my selection was burned black and it's smell covered our whole table, when we complained, he explained it was toasted and brought two cold slices of bread from the refrigerator. We had to ask two different servers for bread for the table and after waiting 14 min, asked for the third time. Our salads were odd combinations and rather tasteless. The worst thing was, I am sorry to say, a waiter with a heavy full beard with a small mask and all the beard escaping on the bottom. Visited with a couple of coworkers for brunch and a couple of weekends ago and the experience was definitely subpar. The waiter seemed a bit grouchy, one of my coworker's food arrived cold, and my order was wrong. The food and cocktail wasn't very good and was grossly overpriced. There was another lady who kept checking on our table, which seemed to be a general manager type and that was nice, but the rest of the experience wasn't great. Probably will not return. read more

Ambiance was really nice. It was raining but we ate outside under the tent with fire pits. Really warm and cozy. The chicken wings were very delicious. I order the salmon which was just okay. We decided to try Herbies out for my birthday dinner. The restaurant was at 25% capacity on a Friday night, but it took our waiter almost 10 minutes to greet us and take our drink order, even though I saw him just standing in the corner of the dining room doing nothing. Drinks were decent, Espresso martini was good. The escargot was very over cooked, almost too hard to chew. The food runner had no idea which food went to which table - EVERY time she came out of the kitchen, she sent the food to the wrong table in the dining room. I overheard the people at the next table complain and send back the burger, not once, but twice because it was over cooked. We probably waited another 20 minutes after our eating appetizers before our burger and mussels came out. Food was just okay, and of course the burger came out over cooked, but by this point we just wanted to eat and get out of there. Our waiter then proceeded to give us the bill, and then hovered over us while we looked it over before paying. It was very underwhelming dining experience. read more

Herbie's used to be one of our favorite spots but I feel like it has lost the attention to detail that we so loved. Came for brunch on Sunday and was incredibly excited. My friend had a bad experience here a few weeks before, with an appetizer order being completely ignored and no mention of a sorry/anything to make up for it when she was hosting out of town guests. I told her that Herbie's was better than that and we wanted to show her. To start, our bartenders were very friendly and completely on top of filling our drinks and answering questions. The food was just...not good. We didn't want to say anything out of feeling bad, but we should've. The poutine special featured duck and sounded amazing. However, the duck was so salty we couldn't even enjoy it. We picked around with it for a bit but just couldn't do it. And, I'm the kind of person who over salts everything on purpose. We ordered the burger. Looking at the texture and color of the meat freaked me out but we decided to try it. My friend kept giving it a chance hoping it would get better but one bite was more than enough for me. The meat tasted slightly spoiled and incredibly....game-y?... for beed. I ended up having the pancetta & cheese on a slice of the bun and that was yummy. For dessert, we were planning to order the fritters when my friend noticed the donuts. On her previous visit she tasted the red velvet and fell in love. We asked if the donuts today were red velvet and were given a yes. Well, the donuts were in no way, red velvet. They were good, just not what we were sold on. It was disappointing, and I want Herbie's to be more than that. To say I am discontent with my experience at Herbie's would be a gross understatement. Quite frankly, my experience was far worse than abysmal. We arrived for a 12:00 table reservation, only to be told it wasn't ready. By 12:30, we still weren't seated: DISGUSTING. Suddenly, our party of 12 was seated but, to our dismay, on 4 separate tables. Despite this, we still decided we ought to try and make the most of it; however, we should've have been far more suspicious. our so called "bottomless mimosas" were far from it: we were cut off after a mere 3. In addition, the food we ordered - for some unfathomable reason - arrived in several different servings, with a few of us receiving food up to 30 minutes before the rest of our party. This circumstance was most certainly concerning, which was further exacerbated by the forceful 20% tip on the bill. I am beyond repulsed. read more

Herbies I started a new job and I am located in Clayton. My boss and coworker took me out here for lunch a couple of days. It was called another name but not sure if I was a rebranding or if it is a totally new restaurant. The first day I went I had the special. A chicken sandwich French Fries and Salad. I opted out of the French fries but for some reason the server still sent them. There was a HUGE amount of them. Although I could not eat them all, the few that I did have were delicious. They were topped with real parmesan cheese. My sandwich was also great. It had cole slaw on it. At first I didn't think I would like that but it really did make the sandwich pop. The second time I ate here (in a week) I had the pesto Pasta with Shrimp. The shrimp was great. But I didn't really care for the noodles and pesto combined (although I really like pesto) just something about the mix of them all wasn't to my liking. My new boss got the shrimp and grits and he loved the...he ate them all. Now I wish I would have gotten that instead. read more

Disappointed Went on a Sunday night and wanted to sit on the patio. Although there were tables available we were told that they were short servers and that they were not sitting anyone for a while. So we sat at the couch and ordered drinks and apps, which 20 minutes later still hadn't shown. Once we were sat, we had two different servers and had to place our drink and apps order again. So after 40 minutes we finally had drinks. Our dinner also took quite a while and was underwhelming. The flatbread app was better than either entree. I ordered another glass of Pinot Noir which showed up ice cold. When the server saw me warming it with my hands he said that the bartender just pulled it out of the cooler. Two questions: 1. Why is a Pinot Noir in a super cold cooler? 2. If the server knew it was too cold then why did he serve it? I will admit that this is a pet peeve of mine. If a restaurant is going to charge high prices, wine service should at least be passable. I left feeling like I'd been taken. Nearly $100 for four drinks, an app, Mac & Cheese and a burger (which seemed from frozen beef BTW), after all of the delays, etc, was pretty steep. I can't fault the server for the ticket times. It's like the kitchen is way too small to handle all the covers when the patio is open. Old school Balaban's this is not. What a shame. read more

I've had lunch here three times, and been disappointed twice. The first time was shortly after they opened, back in December. I had the Brisket Grilled Cheese, which was dry and overcooked. And when I asked for BBQ sauce, I was told there was none. Lunch number two, had the BBQ salmon. Quite good, prepared correctly, very tasty. No complaints. Lunch three, yesterday. Had the braised short rib hoagie. It tasted pretty good, but the meat was rubbery and chewy. Service was good the two times in the dining room, not so much the one time I ate at the bar. read more

Whenever I apply to a restaurant I always read the reviews first. If you're thinking about applying here, DONT. i have served in 7 restaurants over the past 4 years and this one is by far the worse like by a lot. A LOT. The turnover rate is INSANE no one had even been there more than 6 months when I started besides management. I was promised 1000-1500 a week and a full schedule and this was my first fine dining job so I was also promised training on that. I got 1 day off training. Literally 1 day. Then everyone treats you terribly when you don't know what you're doing. I barley made 300 bucks a week. 1/2 my shifts were called off. I went to the managers at least 10 times over the 3 months period I was there and kept getting lied to over and over and over again saying the money was coming, but then it just got worse. And i'm a great server if you're thinking I was the problem, no. And even if I was the problem, management could have communicated that to me but whenever i asked what i could work on they said I was perfect? One manager didn't like me and when they were off duty sent me a rude drunk text that had nothing to do with work and didn't even get in trouble.... SO UNPROFESSIONAL. Everyone who worked there was always in a horrible mood because we were all going through the same thing. Also the managers are rude and always going though their own personal chrisis, so that when you need something you have to wait forever. 75% of my job was just standing around and chatting with my grumpy co workers about our joke of a job most of which were on drugs. I wasn't even allowed to bring snacks from home because the roach problem was so bad in the server stations you couldn't leave a granola bar out for 5 minutes! Speaking of which do not order espresso because there are FAMILIES of roaches living in there they all scurry away super quick when you first open the machine in the morning XD. the goat cheese and bread pudding is amazing though like as a customer i wouldn't say don't go, just don't order the espresso or coffee because roaches also live in the coffee bean bags too. And this just scratches the surface but anyone who's read this far I'm sure got the gist of it, don't work there and if you eat there don't order coffee or espresso! This place was so disappointing. I'd never been to the old location in the CWE, but the new spot is right near where I live, so I had high hopes that it could be a go-to spot...not so much. We were greeted by an unfriendly hostess and two other gentlemen who seemed bothered by our presence- like we were interrupting them or something. After we told them that we had a reservation, the three of them clearly had a discussion about where to seat us. The hostess then took us to their side room that faces Maryland Ave, and sat us in the corner by the water station/menus for the servers, despite the fact that there were several other tables open in that room (and the main dining room), including better options by the window. Because the server station was so close to our table, we had to face sitting that direction, otherwise the servers would bump into our chairs. Also, the side room itself is just a weird space- it seems like they barely revamped it from its Cardwells days, and the chairs in there were really uncomfortable! So as you can see, not off to a great start. All of that could have probably been forgiven though if the food had been better. First of all, the bread was super lame- it was clearly an afterthought (which is a pet peeve of mine). For apps, we ordered the shrimp dumplings and some salads (caesar and mixed greens), all of which were fine but nothing special. My husband ordered the beef Wellington for dinner, and it was overcooked (he ordered it medium-rare and it came out medium+), and the carrots and green beans on the side looked like something you'd get at Applebee's. It also did not come with any sort of potato or starch, which I thought was weird. I had the bacon wrapped quail, which was very underwhelming- the spice rub was not the right combination of flavors and the mushroom stuffing on the inside was really soggy. The one bright spot of the evening was our server. I didn't catch his name, but he was very professional, pleasant, and helpful. He even brought us a free dessert! Of course the dessert (flourless chocolate cake) was also not very good, but at least it was free! So other than our server being great, this was a total letdown and definitely not worth the price. You can get a much better meal for these prices (or cheaper) at other places in Clayton. read more
