I've lived in Costa Mesa for over 20 years and have always noticed this shop. I finally decided to stop by and have them check out my Pacifica that was overheating and losing coolant. Daron and everyone at the front desk were incredibly friendly and welcoming. The lobby and waiting area were spotless, which made for a great first impression. What really stood out was their thorough inspection process. They provided pictures and videos showing exactly what the issues were. It's one thing to be told what's wrong, but actually seeing the proof is top-notch service. Unfortunately, my van had a blown head gasket and wasn't worth saving. However, I was so impressed with their honesty and how they handled everything that we ended up bringing in my daughter's 4Runner. They did a full inspection on the 4Runner, replaced the entire driveshaft, installed brand-new shocks and springs, and took care of several other fixes. It now drives like a brand-new car, and we absolutely love it! Our 4Runner is pushing 298k miles, and thanks to Daron and his team at Herb's Garage, we're hoping to keep it running for another 100k. I don't know - took my truck here a couple of years ago. They called my car a "piece of sh*t" (unsolicited and highly unprofessional), and replaced the wrong part for no reason. Still giving 3 stars because I hope that if I brought it back they would own up to it and take care of it, but I did not have to time to do that and took it somewhere else to actually fix it. We are traveling in our RV and staying in Newport Beach area. Our tow vehicle is a Jeep Cherokee and the housing for the electrical for the brakes when being towed became very loose. I did not have the tools to try to tighten it plus it is in a very hard spot to access. I dropped by without an appointment and Darren (co-owner with sister) was very kind to stop what he was doing and get it properly secured at no cost. I've been a loyal customer of Herb's for some time now and have always appreciated the straightforward service--tell you the issue, you fix it, I pay, and we move on. Unfortunately, my recent experience has been very disappointing and left me feeling taken advantage of. I brought my car in because the passenger side was blowing warm air. I paid $205 for a diagnosis, and your team recommended replacing the entire A/C compressor "to be safe in the long run." I trusted your expertise and paid the $2,707 quote for parts and labor. But when I picked up my car, all the vents were blowing warm air--not just the passenger side. The issue wasn't fixed; it was made worse. I brought the car back expecting the problem to be corrected under the original service, only to be told it would now cost another $1,928 to resolve--almost $5,000 total for A/C service. I'm not a difficult customer. I've always paid in full and never questioned your recommendations. But this experience feels like I'm being charged repeatedly for the same unresolved issue. You diagnosed it. I paid. I expected it to be fixed. Instead, I got my car back in worse condition, and now I'm being asked to pay even more. I'm very disappointed. read more

I brought my 2017 Civic in after my check engine and brake lights came on and the car went into limp mode. Honestly, I was stressed thinking it was going to be a $3-4k transmission. These guys actually took the time to check it out, showed me the fluid (it was burnt), explained the code, and recommended trying the cheaper route first . I needed to get a new sensor and a fluid change with the right Honda fluid. They didn't push me into a rebuild, didn't try to upsell, just kept it honest and told me straight: this might buy you more life, or it might still need a transmission later. They also gave me a military discount which meant a lot. Car's running good now and I left feeling like I wasn't being played. Definitely a solid shop. read more

Brought my '03 Mini in because it was riding very rough. Thought I might need shocks. Herb's did an impressively thorough review of the car, and pointed out several problem areas, not all of which needed immediate attention. With their guidance, we prioritized a few items. Herb's replaced front & rear shocks and struts as well as engine mounts which were contributing to the bumpy ride feeling. Since the rear brakes were worn, we tackled those as well. All was done in a day, and my Mini rides pretty much like The day I bought it. Herb's explained and documented all issues, and made sure I knew what they were planning to do (and why). While they are friendly and personable, you will need to take photos of your car before you go through service. After spending nearly 10k on an engine replacement I noticed damage on my hood, you can see that this would correspond with them taking off the hood as it's in the corners. After calling them they stated that they had photos showing that it wasn't their fault but said, "we don't have to show you nothing". There are more reputable places to go, avoid this place unless you have to go. read more

Had my SUV towed there after it wouldn't run while I was shopping few months ago cause on AAA recommend list. They charge more than national average for finding out what's wrong with your car $175 !!!?? Even though I specifically stated what was wrong with the car and to just focus on that area but they decided to tell me about the ENTIRE shape of my car down to replace my windshield wiper soon ( I suspect to justify the outrageous diagnostic amount ) Then told me it was a hose issue went for 1,000 to $1200. I'm not a mechanic but a woman who was stressed out and for a hose issue connector it sounded ridiculously high!!! Without going into every single stressful detail how this transpired the bottom line, I checked out their estimated cost compared with a auto dealership which came in at $700, still a lot but much less then spoke with a friend who works on cars, got the part & replaced it within 30 min a few days later. Total cost $ 35 dollars!!!!! I know sounds insane I thought so too but it happened & I can't stress enough do your homework, don't accept on blind trust, I didn't and glad I didn't. I would never ever recommend this garage whether recommend by AAA or ANY other places, even if I had disposable income which Im the opposite of that, never trust what I experienced there & felt very uncomfortable during the entire process. To rate a star at all is a diservice to have to put down but no other option. read more

I keep getting stalked by Darrin as evidenced from my text pics. I keep asking him to leave me alone but he won't stop. I've been going to this mechanic for years based on my brother's recommendation. Mostly I'm in and out in an hour or 2 for random things while I wait in their waiting room. Recently, I needed body work done. Daron, the son of the owner assured me it would be 2 days. When I called, oh 2 days more, then another call, 2 days more. Then Wednesday for sure. I call Wednesday and oh no Thursday for sure. Then I call on Thursday oh Friday we're done. Friday morning call and they're "detailing it". Another call at lunch and he said can you get it Saturday so he can knock off early to go to the fair because he still needs to detail it. I said I don't care about detailing or washing and he screamed over my phone. Woah dude I need my car to go to my doctor and get my meds. As friendly as I and my family have been to you, this is unacceptable. I picked my car up on that Friday at 7:30pm. It wasn't detailed. It was only washed. I had wadded up chip bags in the interior of my car (that I don't eat,) and they stole my old iPhone out of my locked glove box and 3 cds. I called, I texted Daron, I texted his dad the business owner Armin, and no response. Nobody would respond to me or take my text or call. So you steal from me and try to assure me we're "family" and can't bother to talk to me? I'll find another place to go. Too bad they ripped off my insurance company and stole from me.
