Are you taking care of your car??
    Lilly G.

Located steps from 19th St on the northbound side of Newport Blvd, you cannot miss the ExperTec Automotive building in blue. My car registered was due and I saw a great deal on an ExperTec mailer for a smog check for under $54 with electronic certificate to the DMV. Since I had such a wonderful experience with the ExperTec in HB for my mom's 1989 Toyota Camry, I decided to give CM a chance. My appointment call was always answered by Jose. He was professional, informative & took all three of my calls either making/moving my smog appointments. He was accommodating and patient with my schedule changes, which I appreciated. This time, I was 20 mins late right before lunch so I asked if I could just leave my car. He said it was fine. The parking lot was full when I arrived which is a testament of how busy the shop is. I was able to grab a spot as a customer left. I was immediately greeted by Mike who was impressed with my reverse parking skills. He also super sweet to my dog, Finn. The waiting room is large and clean. It has a nice peaceful feeling with a nice sofa, coffee table, refreshments such as coffee, bottled water & Keurig coffee. They even offer popcorn with a variety of popcorn salt. Today, Jose checked me in. Not sure if it was those schedule changes, but he wasn't as friendly. He was definitely accommodating so I honestly cannot complain. I was late & he was professional all the way through. Mike offered courtesy shuttle for drop off/pickup, but I wanted to enjoy the sun and get some exercise with my dog. I left my car and was called back within an impressive 80 minutes. Did the mechanics take a lunch? That was so fast! My dog Finn and I walked back to the shop. We waited a bit before being attended to by Gary. He had an awesome upbeat energy as he checked me out. He let me know the smog certificate was already electronically transmitted to the DMV. I noticed there was a steady stream of customers, so this shop seemed to be well loved and I can see why. The value of this smog check is unbeatable with that Value-Pak coupon. Highly recommended for Smog Checks.

The state of the lugnut after ExperTec's Failed Removal.

Neither Expert, Nor Tec. On November3,2025, I brought my 2010 Toyota Prius to ExperTec Automotive to remove a spinning lug nut on the driver's front wheel. After spending approximately four hours on the job, the shop was unable to remove the lug nut. They charged me $222.18 for labor despite the fact that the issue was not resolved. The invoice clearly states: "One lug is spinning on the driver front. Spent 4 hours on it trying to remove it. Customer was informed that he could pay additional labor to keep at it, or pay for time already and pick it up." When I asked what it would take for completion the sales person said it could be $600-$800 more. After retrieving my vehicle, I was forced to solve the issue myself. Following advice to use cobalt drill bits, I was able to remove the lug nut completely in under 20 minutes. This proves that the shop's failure and exorbitant time spent was due to improper tooling and technique, not the inherent difficulty of the job. The mechanic, a nice young man named Scott, acknowledged to me that his bits were dull and that new cobalt bits would have made the job successful. I felt for him and gave him the cobalt drill bits I bought wishing him future success. Details of Interaction with Management: After completing the repair myself, I returned to ExperTec to request a refund. The front‑office staff initially attempted to process one but their POS system failed. I then spoke with GaryMcMann, the General Manager. Mr.McMann stated that he had to pay his mechanic for the three hours worked and that "the progress [his mechanic] made was what made it possible for you to drill through in 19minutes." He went on further to say that they "had to get my car off their rack, it was taking too much time." I disagreed with that assertion -- their work did not help me. The lug nut issue was completely unresolved when I began. My own work and tooling, not theirs, achieved the result. Mr.McMann offered a 50% refund ($111.09) as a compromise. I declined, as I believe paying any amount for an uncompleted and improperly executed repair is unjust. Basis of Complaint I was charged for non‑performance -- the service I paid for (removal of the lug nut) was not completed. ExperTec failed to use appropriate tools or techniques and the mechanic admitted their drill bits were too dull. No value was provided; I had to research the problem, purchase the correct tools (cobalt drill bits), spend my own time, and complete the job myself. The manager's justification ("I have to pay my mechanic") is not a valid reason to bill the customer for a failed attempt. No written disclosure or estimate was provided stating that I would be charged full labor for an unsuccessful repair attempt. Desired Resolution I am requesting a full refund of $222.18 for non‑performance of work. Alternatively, I request that the BAR review this shop's billing and repair practices to ensure compliance with California's standards of competent workmanship and fair dealing.

They bring me oil colors so I can see the difference between my dirty colors and the new vibrant colors I should have. So of course I want my car to run great so im saying yes to every new filter and yes to every new fluid but Im not a mechanic so im trusting them like I've trusted my last oil change place. There is a good energy here and I hope they are doing everything they say they are doing because this is my only vehicle and Im a single mom with 2 teenagers. Between the 3 of us we are constantly going to and from everywhere. So far im happy with the service but I still have 3 guys under my hood. FYI: I was a committed customer to Valvoline Express off of Dyer and Main in Santa Ana but they did something I didnt like during my last oil change. So the last time I was there left a great review but before I drove off the guy brings me a list of all the things they did to my car and the only thing I recognized was Replaced windshield wiper. I knew for a fact they replaced them. They guy apologized and replaced them but now how do I know what else "they forgot" to do?

SMH…read more --- Been meaning to write this review for weeks, but the final straw came today when I found out yet again that the clowns working at this Oil Stop are either a.) incompetent or b.) did the equivalent of spitting in my food for an oil change establishment. 1. I sat through this oil change asking only for 1 thing upon pulling in- please check/fill the air in the tires because I have an alert on the dash that they're low. Literally was told I was all set and go to drive away, only to find the tires were still low and hadn't been touched. 2. The day after my oil change, I hear a grinding of sorts. Upon investigation, find that the plastic piece of the undercarriage was hanging down, not secured in place, and now torn up from the pavement from driving on it. (Mind you, they needed to remove this piece to change the oil.) My boyfriend takes it back, to be told it was "already like that" and when bf asks why they didn't mention it to me if it was already damaged, their response was "well, she's a woman". Unbelievable because shouldn't I be warned of a potential danger? 3. After they secured the damaged piece back, I am now getting an error on dash stating the front camera is blocked. Upon investigation, there is a clear finger print of OIL smeared over said camera. 4. I take the car for a minor repair to my normal place and they inform me the oil dipstick is BROKEN. Now, either these guys did this when they changed the oil, or again failed to tell me it was broken...in either case, they are trash. The funny thing is that the only thing they did to try and rectify anything was to give a 10% discount on my next oil change smh. DON'T TAKE YOUR CAR HERE. THEY'LL COST YOU MONEY AND ADD A HEADACHE ON TOP OF IT.

Because of that, I came back for multiple oil changes. Unfortunately, my most recent visit was completely different. I was charged a high price for what should have been a simple oil change and cabin/air filter replacement, and I ended up waiting about two hours for the work to be completed. After talking it through with someone more familiar with car maintenance, it became clear that I was likely overcharged for a job that should have been quicker and more reasonably priced. What made the experience worse was the interaction before my appointment. When I asked for clarification about being told I may need "air," EU laughed at me for asking. I'm neurodivergent and sometimes take things more literally, so I was just trying to confirm whether I was being charged for something that is often free. Instead of explaining, I felt mocked for asking a simple question. Because of this experience, I no longer feel comfortable or confident returning here. I'm sharing this as a caution for other customers--especially women and neurodivergent people--who may not be as familiar with car maintenance and rely on mechanics to be honest, respectful, and transparent.

When my SUV overheated and the engine failed, I was overwhelmed. But the moment I spoke with them, it felt like a weight lifted. They understood exactly what was happening before they even saw the car. Instead of pushing a costly $6,000 engine replacement, Byron found a way to rebuild the engine through a machine shop, saving me thousands. That kind of honesty is rare. The repairs took time, but they never rushed. They kept us updated, checked every detail, and refused to release the vehicle until they were absolutely sure there were no leaks, no issues, no surprises. After dealing with another shop that returned our Honda Pilot with oil leaks, this level of care meant everything. What stood out most was their integrity. Their kindness. Their commitment to doing the right thing even when it takes longer or costs them more effort. If we lived closer to Costa Mesa, we'd bring every one of our vehicles here without hesitation. There truly aren't enough words to describe how thankful I am for Byron and his team. They didn't just fix my SUV -- they restored my trust in what an honest auto shop can be.
