This is the worst steak I have ever had and the baked potato side wasn't much better. Steak was ordered medium and came out completely dry and zero flavor. I ended up asking for steak sauce just so I could finish the meal. I haven't eaten a steak with steak sauce in over 15 years. The potato also was dry and the toppings were amazingly sparse, barely anything on it. For $40-$50 I would expect food that melts in your mouth but instead I got something that tasted like it was from steak and shake. I will never return to this place. I would be embarrassed if I were the owner of this establishment. read more

I've always had really great meals and service at the Independence Hereford House. The best time to dine at Hereford House is at lunch time! I prefer the lunch menu and you get the best bang for your buck. I always end up getting the same thing - Chicken Fried Chicken, gravy on the side and a side of twice baked potato. It comes with a soup or side salad, which I always order mixed greens with shallot dressing. On a cold day, I might switch it up to the steak soup which is so hearty and comforting. Hereford House has one of the best kids' menus I've ever seen. The kids can order filet mignon, mac & cheese, dino nuggets, steakburgers, grilled chicken, or PBJ. The kid's meal comes with a drink, salad or fruit, an additional side dish AND ice cream! My daughter usually gets a giant, grilled hot dog, fruit, rice pilaf, milk and ice cream for $3.95! She loves their giant rolls too. Dinner here is always good (I love the sirloin), but very pricey (as expected). I wonder how the HH restaurant group has been doing since their owner was indicted on burning down his downtown location? read more

My family and I were treated with nothing but disrespect by the staff. We did not even get to our table before we felt the need to leave. The situation the staff was in was not ideal, but that doesn't make it okay to tell children to be quiet, tell customers to mind their own business, or to tell customers you're too busy to seat them. Corporate did reach out to me and offer to send my mom and grandma gift certificates because we went for an early mother's day dinner, (hence 2 stars instead of 0) but it's not even worth trying to go again. read more

My husband and I decided to try something new and Hereford House won the random draw. With random draws sometimes you find gems and other times you regret your visit. We definitely regretted this one. The food was way overpriced for the tiny portions we received, and the food was terrible. The steaks were over cooked and flavorless. The potatoes were like glue. Even the drinks tasted watered down. My husband has been ill since we visited, and said after the fact that he stole my spoon because his had dried crusty food on it. Although our steak was very good - the service was terrible. It seems every time I go here..it gets a little worse. It is way better to go here for dinner as it takes too long for an hour lunch break. Did not like their sweet potato waffle fries - but this is a tough item to prepare. The hero of the dinner was supposed to be the kc strip, however I think the best item was the calamari , which was beautifully seasoned and breaded and really had me excited for the rest of my meal. First the good ... which is everything. We got the dinner for 2, $75. Four courses with enough food that you cannot possibly eat it all ... but you try anyways because it's so good. Main course was the prime rib and full slab of ribs. Both were expertly prepared, garnished, and tasted fantastic! The salads, appetizer, and desert (carrot cake) were equally fantastic. Our waiter was Matt but I have to tell you it made little difference who took your order because all of them come over to either clear out plates or make sure you don't need anything. We aren't rich but we felt like millionaires after this dinner. It's a "do not miss" event! Now the bad ... which was nothing. My husband and I made reservations to celebrate our 40th anniversary. We normally go to this location for anniversaries and birthdays. I am going to try to make this short. We ordered drinks - my husband ordered Vodka-rocks with 3 olives. He got a Manhattan glass, full of water with some vodka and no olives. Our server, Andrew, quickly got him some olives. We hated to start dinner with a complaint, so we said nothing about the watery drink. We ordered dinner, my husband getting a filet, baked potato and a Caesar Salad. I had the House Salad. Moving along....we got home and my husbands stomach felt like he was bloating, the stomach rolling, he kept burping the salad and finally ran to the bathroom with "food poisoning". When you have vomiting and diarrhea, 40 minutes after eating, you know you ate something "bad". He continued the diarrhea for quite some time, still burping the salad dressing. I called "Barry" the morning after and explained what happened. We are really not people who would complain, but this was a special evening.........that went into the toilet quickly......not to mention $100 down the drain, so to speak. Barry said he would check with his Chef, upper mgmt and call us back. He indicated, perhaps it was something else my husband ate. Not true. We had a late breakfast, ate no lunch so we could really enjoy our evening. It's been a week now, and no call. Perhaps HH was too quick to open. At the very least Barry is a lousy Manager and poor representative for HH, when he can't even follow up on a complaint such as this. We are very very disappointed. read more

3 stars is about right in my opinion. Nothing great here at Hereford House. Pretty average. I think the chef probably needs some training as far as steak. I ordered ribeye-medium and it was TOUGH. Chewy and did not have good flavor. The appetizer, Calamari, was fine. It was not rubbery at all. The peppers that are fried along with the Calamari were super hot/spicy, which we were warned about. I had the mushrooms for a side, which were good. The steak made the experience blah. If it had been good, the whole meal would have seemed better. My son-in-law ordered bacon wrapped tenderloin and it also was leathery. He ordered his medium well. Doubt we will return. read more

I travel all over the country and I'm a midwestern guy so I prefer a nice steak for dinner when I'm going different places. I've heard of Hereford House for a while and never got the chance to go until last night. Had a business dinner with 5 other people and we were all in agreement that these steaks weren't even close to our top 5 steakhouses. I ordered the Porterhouse medium rare and it came out well done. Sent it back because if I'm paying $60 for a steak it better be perfection when I get it. By the time the remake came back out everyone else finished their meal which was not ideal and the remade steak was still just above medium, and pretty dry. To be quite honest I've had better steaks at Texas Roadhouse and Outback and a friendlier staff as well. None of us got refills when we needed them and our waitress was nonexistent except during the ordering process and when it was time to pay. I'm glad I got to experience this place but if I'm back in the area I will for sure eat somewhere else. On a positive note, the salad and bread was amazing! read more

The food was fine, a little overpriced for what you get. The decor is very outdated and the booths are tight. The problem here was our server, she was not friendly, and a bit snippety when we needed a minute to order and would just toss stuff on the table. She tried to collect our plates before we were done. I was part of a party of eight tonight. The restaurant didn't appear to be busy and yet we had the absolute worse service I have ever had at a nice restaurant. I don't know if we just got the most inexperienced server or if he knew his $45 tip was predetermined by our party size, but we couldn't get drink refills without asking and he didn't clear any of the dirty glasses and dishes from the table as the courses moved forward. We had to constantly ask for every little thing (sour cream for the baked potato, dressing for the salad...). The food was good, but certainly not worth the experience. We had a Birthday Dinner here for my son in early December, Just have to say, we hadn't been here in awhile(few months) and their food choices have become more limited ( no more mashed sweet potatoes with almond butter) also no more cheesecake! These were 2 of our favorites! They also didn't have the wonderful dinner rolls they used to have, it was replaced with a loaf type bread you had to cut yourself, which was ok, but not as good as the rolls. My husband and I were very disappointed with the food and ambience of this Hereford House. Needless to say, Hereford House has a great reputation in the KC area, so we were willing to pay the price for quality food. When we first arrived, the sat us next to a table with several small children. There were plenty of tables, so not any reason to sit us next to a loud table. I asked if we could change tables and they did. But this time the sat us at a very small booth right next to the kitchen. Again, the place was practically empty, so no reason to give us a bad table. I asked to move to a different table; and our waitress was very accommadating. Now comes the really bad part, as we were finishing our salads, a cockroach crawls across the table. My husband brushes it off onto the floor. I am ready to leave but he convinces me to stay. Then as our main entree is arriving, I see a cockroach crawling up the back of his chair. I say something to the guy that has delivered our food, but he just pretends to not notice. And on top of that, my chicken was undercooked; but of course by this time I had lost my appetite. I wanted to complain, but my husband didn't want to embarrass our waitress. I on the other hand feel if they are going to charge me $70 for dinner for two, everything should be perfect. I absolutely love this place because I am a vegan and I was able to eat a wonderful meal. We stopped there on our way to Colorado and stopped again on our way back to Nashville. Our waiter, Matt was absolutely the best. I ordered a baked potato, green beans (no butter) and mushrooms (no butter). Matt served me everything on one plate!!! I write this review hoping Hereford House will fix a few issues and return to what it once was. I have been eating at HH for probably 35 years and it's one of my favorite traditions. It's where my wife and I went on our first date and it's where I go when I want prime rib cooked the way "I" like it cooked. I went there today for lunch and ordered the rib eye steak. It was cooked correctly as ordered but the cut of meat looked and tasted like something I bought at Walmart and let my teen son cook on the grill. I take that back, cooked on a broiler pan. A grill would have improved this steak. I was so surprised I peeked to see who was cooking and found a kid at the helm that looked like he might or might not be old enough to have a beer. I am almost scared to order my favorite prime rib now. I couldn't stand to see that it's been ruined. Hereford House, your prices are in the top end. Don't buy a $6 steak, have a kid cook it, then charge me for a premium $30 steak. Fix this. Going cheap at a steak restaurant is not ok. On the positive side, the house salad with the two House dressings is still the thing to start with. read more

I live near this Hereford House restaurant and had a very sub par experience many years ago with a bunch of coworkers. One guy that was passing through town made the comment "I thought KC was known for steak" I was the one who picked the restaurant so I was both embarrassed , and mad I drive by it almost every day and was thinking about giving it a second chance. But after reading a lot of the reviews I believe that would be a crap shoot at best. I'll pay good money for a good meal but as some of the reviews point out you are paying top dollar for cafeteria food. So the Hereford House will never see me again read more

Hereford House is a decent steakhouse, but unfortunately the environment makes up for its good, but not great food. The hype I've heard of Hereford House and its steak is far too much in my opinion. The steak when I ordered wasn't cooked how I wanted and didn't have that juicy, make-your-mouth-cringe sensation I've had other places. The mashed potatoes were very good as was my water(ha). The detail on the inside was dim but not too dim; the perfect look for a steakhouse. Felt like a place to conduct a business meeting while eating a man's steak, but the steak wasn't up to par in that fashion. The price was way too much for the quality of food served, nearly $80 for an appetizer and two meals for my girlfriend and I. Overall, Hereford House was a dissapointment but still a good experience. read more

We went to This location and ordered the bone in rib eye medium and the linguini and clams. My steak was well done on the edges and rare to raw on the insides. To much gristle and the plate full of pooled blood was gross. My wife was sick and got dehydrated the next day. The 20 buck off Internet coupon they had sent me made this experience a bit better. I just feel a 40 dollar steak should be as you ordered it. I am afraid after about 60 visits and a lot of second chances they have lost another customer. read more

I recently went to Hereford House for lunch. I was looking forward to it all week, having heard great things about Hereford House. Unfortunately I didn't experience many of those great things. Our server was super nice, and honest - when asking about the soup of the day, she told us NOT to get it, that it needed too much salt that day, and to go for the steak soup instead! Following her advice, my husband and I had the steak soup and it was delicious. We also ordered an appetizer of fried calamari. It was WAY too chewy, and really weird as well - it looked like two different days worth of calamari was on the plate. Some was darkened and burned (looking almost like fried onions), and the other half was perfectly fried. It was all chewy. He ordered an au jus sandwich and I went with the buffalo chicken sandwich. I had one bite of my sandwich and realized I would not be having any more. The chicken was really juicy, but the sauce was NOT any buffalo sauce I'd ever had, and really unappetizing. My husband split his sandwich with me, which I didn't eat much of either. The roast beef was very dry and tough, and the dipping sauce left much to be desired. Still better than the buffalo chicken sandwich, though. I guess we should've just tried the steak. We both agreed we won't be going back. read more

Last time I went to eat here, which was a few weeks ago. An hour after eating I had horrible diarrhea. It lasted for three days straight. I went to the ER and had to be admitted into the Hospital immediately when I arrived. The doctor told me I was so sick I should have called 911 for an Ambulance I almost died. I will never go back here again. I was sick for weeks. I just ate a roll and mashed and baked potatoes. The host woman at the restaurant are also rude. Especially the people who stand at the front desk and do nothing and ignore you. read more

I love their happy hour menu! The boneless buffalo wings are amazing and so are the mussels. Only downside is there are no sparkling wines by the glass, but they do offer 25% off of full bottles on Sunday! Some champagne and the mussels together are perfection. read more

I have never been more disappointed. Met my family there for sons birth day. Drove from the lake. Seated quickly. Water delivered. Soft drinks delivered bar order took 15 minutes. Had to get up to find my waiter. Went to the bar no one there. Found waiter and he said they were working on it. 2 beers! Ordered appetizers they were delivered in about 10 and were very good. Down hill from there. 45 minute wait for food. (They were not busy on a sunday at 2pm). 3 of the 5 dishes were wrong side dishes. Waiter said he would get the correct side dishes right out. Asked for ketchup and steak sauce. Waited and waited. Once again got up to find waiter and told me he was working on the ketchup. Bar order still not at table. Went ahead and ate-finished. 2 beers arrived. 10 minutes later ketchup steak sauce and proper side came to the table. Asked the waiter if he was kidding. Told him to take the food away and bring us some plates and forks as my wife brought my sons favorite cake. (Asked in advance if this was ok). He then proceeded to tell me that there would be a cake cutting fee! Told him to bring the check. Family got up and went out to cars while i waited another 10 minutes for him to pick up my cash (wasnt about to use my card) The manger, Cassie came over and asked if I needed change. My husband and I decided to give this location another try and shame on us. Once again, we had poor service -- we finally left without never receiving anything but menus, which we had to ask for (we were seated at the bar). One of the bartenders is extremly rude and obviously his behavior is recognized by the staff. As we were walking out, the hostess asked what had happened and as I began to explain the poor service and the rudeness of the battender, she interrupted me and described what he looked like. She nodded her head in agreement as if she knew all too well about this guy. But, hey, he remains there so they must like him. The food is okay. If you want to go to a great Hereford House, then go to the one in Shawnee. The food and service are top notch. We used to live in that area and were there almost every week. First off, I have to say thank you to everyone here for a wonderful experience as my wife and I were on our honeymoon and everything was top notch. Me I am a carnivore, I love great steak and so does my wife. So, first off the setting was great, not too much light, some seclusion after walking past a very nice bar area to a pleasant room with comfortable chairs and as I said, a perfect somewhat dim secured area. First off the wine, now I am personally not a big wine drinker, however my wife enjoys a glass now and then so we opted for Sarraco Moscato d'asti, the wine was perfect, so on to the appetizers. We ordered the escargot as well as calamari and both were excellent. What next, we ordered dinner, both opting for steak soup with our dinner, which I have to say they are not kidding here, it literally tastes like a decadent beefy stew, loaded to the hilt of course. Dinner, oh I still can't forget the cowboy cut rib eye cooked to absolute rare, cold in the center, grey on the outside, perfection! Every bite was melt in your mouth, while the bill was 140.00 minus tip I have to say dining at its best, no suit or tie needed this place makes you feel welcome no matter who you are, top notch and yes, you do get what you pay for! read more

We at at Hereford House based on a recommendation from our hotel as being "one of the best steak houses" in the area. Although the food was better than average, it was not in anywhere near "best." The rating is mostly based on service. Our waiter was extremely slow and inattentive. The initial drink order took over 30 minutes. When one of us received a steak that was ordered medium rare and delivered well done. We actually had to leave the table to search for the waiter to address the problem. By the time the correct order was returned to the table, the rest of us were finished with our meal. A mere apology was given which is completely insufficient in this case. The entire meal (without dessert or after dinner drinks) took 2 hours and 20 minutes. This is not a low cost restaurant. The cost demands more than just OK food. It demands great food and great service. Spend your money someplace else. read more

The service at Hereford House in Independence leaves a lot to be desired. We arrive on a Friday for 6pm reservations, the four of us order a bottle of wine ($39), it takes 15 minutes to get the drinks, the server pours the host a tasting, things are fine...she pours the rest of the glasses. When she walks away we notice that as we go to take a drink of the wine we have bubbles that are stuck to the sides of the glasses. We swish the wine around and the bubbles don't go away...the only possible reason is there is soap residue on the glasses. We called over the waitress, reported the problem. She proceeds to report the issue to the manager (who does nothing), the server brings another bottle of wine 20 minutes later, before she opens the bottle we examine the glasses and they are filthy. We asked the server if she could see that the glasses were filthy and she agreed. Wouldn't you, as a server, have made sure you took back clean glasses to a table if that was the problem the first time???? At any rate...we decide to order cocktails as we are trying to catch an 8pm movie. It is now 7pm and we had yet to have a drink or our salds. One of our party went to chat with the manager explaining the problem, one of her responses was "I can't turn back the clock." YIKES! REALLY? She finally did come to visit our table and said that she never has unsatisfied customers....we informed her that we would be leaving "unsatisfied". She asked what she could do and we asked for our cocktails as we had been there for 1 hour and still had not had a drink. She leaves and sends out a shrimp cocktail. Might I add we had not even been served our salads at this point. When the salads arrived 2 of the four salads were incorrect and had to be sent back. We would have walked out but on a Friday night we would be out of luck trying to catch the 8pm movie. Everything finally arrived, drinks (we had time for 1) were paid for by the manager. Dinner was a rush and the experience was bad. Our total cost for this dinner was $155. BTW we did ask the manager why she didn't come to the table when the server told her about the first bottle of wine....she didn't see the problem.
