This Hertz is a rip off. They will charge you for gas even when you return the car full. When you provide documentation of a full tank of gas (photos/receipts) they still refuse. Do not use this location. They rip you off. They never answer the phone to rectify the situation and when you go through hertz.com they refuse to correct the error as well. Do not use this Hertz. They will rip you off. When I disputed the charge with American Express Hertz lied and threatened collection. The response from Hertz is meaningless. Local management is the problem and non-responsive. What is the point of forwarding to local management when they refuse to correct their mistake and provide awful customer service? He didn't tell me that your closed Sunday (how do I return it?) , that it's 2 floors down in a parking structure (no elevator no directions on where to turn) to get to the car. We got the wrong car(he didn't tell me that you didn't have the car and had to switch which I would have understood) it was DIRTY! I mean you can wipe the dirt with your finger. The inside worse. No one went with me to review the car to see the conditions it's in(how would you know that scratch was there when I got the car). I paid $164 for a soccer mom car that I had to wash. Return day Sunday: I spent 30 mins trying to figure out how to return the car I called the number but hey, they are closed too! So I had to listen to the recording 3 times to fully understand the steps to return this thing. Be careful! This is a group of scammers and incompetents! I made a reservation (Gold Five Star Hertz customer) on the 14th of June to pick up a car on the 15th. When I arrived the desk attendant looked me up and said they would need to see if they had a car??? Then I had to wait while the manager got the car ready, then I got my car. I returned the car on the evening of the 15th of June to the fourth floor of the parking structure at the Courtyard Marriott and placed the key in the lock box on the 1st floor of the parking structure. I was billed originally for 4 days and then had the displeasure of speaking to Trey of the Long Beach office who called me a liar and told me the best he could do was Saturday. Given the decades of business I've done with Hertz, my hotel checkout, Uber ride, and airplane ticket on Friday the 16th I find it hard to believe that the incompetence of Trey and his negative attitude will be covered up by charging me for an extra day! I was called two days before pickup and told that they were sold out and did not have a car for me. However, I had already paid for the rental. So I was given their corporate number to get my money back. However , they told me that a refund would take 7-10 business days. Totally not okay given I wasn't voluntarily wanting a refund - I was forced because they over booked. After speaking with corporate, I got a phone call from Hertz, ASSURING me I would have a car upon pickup and the previous call was an error on their part. Oct 5, 2018...Yelp has the Ocean Blvd open at 7:30am. I arrived at 7:30am but the business hour on the door listed 8am-6pm...great. The low rating isn't due to the hours of operation but the extend of the customer service at this location. Three clerks went in and out but no greet and service offered. However, the second clerk arrived about 15 minutes before 8am and I asked if it would be acceptable to process my reservation and was told it's not 8am; he proceed into the building and lock the door behind him...NO CUSTOMER care at all. 8am came, I proceed to the counter after the door was opened. The rental processing was pretty quick; 20 minutes and the SUV I wanted arrived a few minutes after but with half emptied gas tank and a mess inside the SUV. It was not clean and there no attempted to clean by Hertz team. It doesn't look like this location has any car inventory but only rotatable rental. Update: Dec 27, 2019 - thought I tried again but the same result. I reserved a standard car for 8am pickup and prepaid due to the holiday but surprisingly nothing was available when I go to pickup the car. The worst part of the experience: -standard car was not available at time of pick up and compact was offered if I don't want to wait 2-3 hrs. However there is no discount even I downgrade my reservation since I prepaid already (not sure about this??). -request to get from the LB Airport and was told none was available (not sure if they checked availability) -I was directed by the Hertz employee to go to subterranean parking to look for my car after I agreed to take the downgrade. I had to walk around for awhile looking for my rental. -car was not clean. It looks like it was the car was left on the street since the car has overnight dew and windshield wiping was just done -when returned, again I was directed by Hertz employee to drive the car back to park it in the subterranean parking. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! Hertz in general is a terrible place to rent a car but this location in particular is the absolute worst. I prepaid for a rental thinking I would show my ID & credit card, receive a car, and drive off into the sunset. WRONG!! The person at the front told me I had to pay a $200 deposit. I told him it never mentioned that online nor had I paid a deposit that high for my previous rentals. He said it was in fine print. When I asked him to pull up the fine print that says I have to pay a $200 deposit, he couldn't. Then I gave him a different credit card to pay the deposit and he told me I'd have to call the 1-800 to change my payment method since everything has to be on one card. I called and was told I had to change the payment method in person. He had me call again and wait on hold for 20 minutes. The representative on the phone had to cancel the reservation I had and rebook a whole new one. That alone took at least another 20 minutes. I also ended up paying more for rebooking!! When I went back to the front the man said the reservation hadn't loaded to his computer yet and I had to wait even longer! Finally the reservation loads and they tell me they gave the car I was supposed to rent to someone else. They also told me they'd need my SSN and to run a "soft credit check." When I asked why and if I could bypass they said it is standard procedure and I cannot receive a rental without doing so. At this point I am in tears because I am beyond livid. I wait for them to find another car, I get in the car and there are stains on the seats, the car was not vacuumed or washed. When I tried to contact the location they didn't answer for THREE DAYS!! I finally get a hold of Mike who told me he'd document the stains and change my drop off location. I get to the new drop off location and of course Mike had not changed the location or documented the stains. The person I was dealing with was also acting helpless saying he couldn't do anything on his end and that I'd have to call Mike or the 1-800 number. I am so fed up with Hertz. This was the absolute worst experience I've ever had renting a car. I'm sure Hertz trains their employees to say "I cannot do anything, it's out of my hands" because I heard that from every single employee I spoke to in person and over the phone!! Costa Mesa failed to communicate my payments and extension of the vehicle to the Long Beach Hertz thus the car was reported stolen and I was arrested. I went to court several days later and showed the DA all my payments as well as the extension documentation and the case was dropped immediately. Hertz showed zero responsibility for their actions. I will never rent from Hertz again even though I get a lower rate, I rather go to Enterprise and pay more due to the treatment I received from a branch manager today. I can understand a location running out of vehicles. I can understand that an employee may have stated something incorrectly, or perhaps as a customer, I heard something incorrectly, but what I can't stand is a rude branch manager that made my experience with the location so poor that I submitted a complaint to Hertz and is writing on Yelp. The branch manager Rashad was rude and treated me like I was a child being chastised. I was upset because they couldn't honor my reservation, but I never raised my voice or cursed and was professional but he was combative and blamed me rather than offer solutions to help me. I even jumped through hoops to try to make my reservation work. When I was told that I needed a current copy of my license (I lost my license 2 days ago), I told them I'm headed to the DMV right now to get it. (I stood in line for an hour to meet that requirement) They ran out of car, that's fine. I just want to understand why and how that could happen. (Rhetorical of course) Instead of offering me solutions, Rashad talked over me, kept saying I didn't qualify for a rental, he kept trying to "win the argument " by using my words against (incorrectly cause he wouldn't let me finish a sentence.) At one point, I said I called 15 min later, Daniel picked me up at 3:45 and I called at 4:07" His response when he cut me off was "well that's not 15 that's 20 minutes." That's a horrible response to try and argue with your customer about 5 minutes in their story! All Rashad needed to do was say that his rep may have made a mistake in leading me to believe they had vehicles and can put me in one and that there was some miscommunication and he apologize for the inconvenience, blah blah blah. If I just had that, I would have understood. If a branch manager can't do something as simple as offering empathy and customer service, then he shouldn't be a branch manager. This place is not a rental agency I'd recommend. First off, I discovered that the gas tank was only three-quarters full in the car they gave me. They deliberately didn't go through a check of the exterior of the car and the gas tank prior to giving me the car. I was in a hurry and didn't notice the non-full gas tank until it was too late.. Also, when I returned the car, even though it was only shortly past 6:00 closing and the doors were still open and the clerk was still there, he refused to accept my car and said I'd have to return it via night drop return and be charged an extra day. Since I then had no other way to get back home except via taxi, I elected to try and return it at 7:00 am. when they reopened in the hopes they could give me a ride back home. 7:15 and still no one appeared in the store. I had to get to work that morning, so I had to hire a taxi to get home. Long and short of it, this would be the last place in Long Beach I'd ever go to again to get a rental car. read more

I visited this location in early February due to its proximity to my work. I rented a car for approximately 5 days and was told to fill the gas tank up to the 7/8th mark. I called the facility and told them that my car was ready at the auto body shop and that I would be needing a ride back once I dropped their car off to them. They informed me that they would pick it up from the shop themselves. (it was a mere 1 mile, so I agreed and didn't think anything of it). The next day, I went in to get my final bill and noticed that there was a fuel charge for $35. Here's what's riveting about this little fact: I wasn't sure how much to put in the tank to gauge the '7/8 mark', so I put in a couple of extra dollars and just filled the tank completely. I informed the manager of the oversight and he said he would resubmit that portion for reimbursement. I followed up with Michael 2 weeks later and he'd informed me that the area manager denied the request. There was no explanation as to why, merely that they'd offer me a voucher for $35 towards a rental car that could be used over the next year. First of all, I rarely rent a car, secondly after this experience I will not be renting from Hertz again. Michael said that he would submit my request AGAIN, hopeful that the area manager knew that I wasn't going to allow them to just pocket my money. I allotted several weeks to pass by in order to give them ample time to correct their error. I walked in yesterday and Michael was waiting on another customer. Once he finished, he merely looked at me amused and uttered the word...denied. Now keep in mind I hadn't spoken as of yet and this was his response. It leads me to believe that Michael doesn't possess the requisite customer service skills or knowledge to handle anything larger than securing the keys for a rental and pulling it up curbside for the next patron. This is disconcerting on many levels. That being said, I secured the number of the area manager that has now 'denied' my claim for reimbursement. Over the last three years this location has always had my rental car ready for pick up. The cars have been new, clean, no funky odor but new car scented and exactly what I prepaid for. The cars have low mileage, breaks work like a new car should, tires have high tread. Customer service is professional polite, prompt and efficient. They've never tried to scare sell me on extra insurance. With that said, I think they can improve by letting me know where the car is exactly on the second floor as soon as I leave the office, the make and model, and color of my new rental. I needed a rental car for just a few days, while my own car was in the shop getting a tune up. I searched for car rental companies in the area, and this location popped up. The reviews didn't look so hot, but I went for it because it was the closest location to my pad. I had a great experience! The staff here were super friendly, and very hard-working. Car rental company jobs are NO joke, and it was refreshing to see such great attitudes from these guys (there were only guys when I was there). I got just what I needed - an economy car for a few days. No hassle, no fuss. In and out. PLUS a great discount with my AAA membership. This place is a scam, they are bad con artist. I rented a car from them July 3 to the 11. I had rented on line and paid $377.50. When I went to pick up the car the clerk offered me insurance and he said it's $29.99 extra, I asked clearly if it's for the entire time and he said yes . I agreed, he prints out the receipt and it says voucher$-377.50 and total charges $239.92. I said wow that's a good price with the Insurance and he said yes, that's total. I come to find out today that my CC was charged both charges, so total of $617.42. I called Hertz customer service and they said oh no the $239.99 because it's $29.99 per day, I said no that's not what the guy said. I went back the office which is across the street from where I live in Long Beach, and the clerk was still clearly saying the same thing he said no you should be only charged $239.92 for everything, I said but I am not. I called hertz. He had to call his boss and after they looked on their computer they said, no look on the receipt it says voucher $-377.50 which means you already paid. I said you didn't even know that's what it meant 5 min ago and now you are saying this charge was clear, but they said sorry the car was returned and we can't credit your CC anything you can call the billing at Hertz maybe they're willing to give you something back, I am very disappointed, shame on them calling themselves men. But I know Karma will get them soon and one of them will have a disaster and it will cost them more than that. read more

This is the WORST experience with renting a vehicle EVER! My reservation for pickup was 9AM there was a line outside the location at 9AM because it wasn't open. There was 1 employee working at the counter, it was filthy inside and their lobby trash can was filled to the top. Twenty minutes later I get my rental and the gas was less than half a tank I returned the car with more than a full tank (because how am I supposed to gauge less than half a tank)! One more thing a Nissan Altima is not a full size car, it's a mid size so if you rent there you will not only wait a couple hours for your rental but you will also be downgraded to a lower class than your reservation and don't expect a clean car either. I had booked a reservation online, filled everything out and was all set with a confirmation number. 30 minutes later I received a call from 'Trey' who said there were no cars available for me. Gave me a great rate (at least $10 cheaper than Enterprise) and didn't try to hard sell me on the bogus insurance (they know that I know that they know that it's a sham). This location has terrible customer service. I've rented from here twice in the last few months and both experiences were bad. That is the last time I rent from here. The first time I made a reservation online a day and a half before I wanted to pick up. I needed an suv to haul some stuff into my storage and was taking a couple passengers so wanted extra room than an economy would provide. The day of my pick up an hour before I was scheduled to get the car I got a call from a woman who said they didn't have an suv available when I told her that I had made the reservation online without an issue she said they normally do not take 24 hour notice reservations because of that reason. So why was I able to reserve it online or why didn't they call sooner to let me know? It's obvious that the inventory or communication from online reservations and local inventory and staff is faulty. Yet the staff member said she could give me an economy car. Really? I reserved an suv and you offer me an economy car? Needless to say I had to get a compact car and was not able to do what I wanted. The next weekend I made a reservation with Enterprise and has no issues. Second time- I decided to rent from here again because it was cheaper and I just needed an economy car. (figured I'd be ok) I show up there's a line out the door and the two males behind the counter look like they just woke up. As I walk in they don't acknowledge anyone and simply say next when it's my turn at the counter. I get the keys and the guy tells me the car is in the parking garage to follow the signs and if I get lost push the alarm button to find it. OK very vague no walk-throughs no information on return nothing just simply hey go find the car. Fine I finally find the car and complete my reservation. When I return I had to find a location award can to return the car and come up into the lobby. The same male staff who was there when I picked up was there wearing his headphones nodding along. He didn't remove them when I walked in or acknowledge me he just said dropping off? Barely looking up. I said yes and handed him the keys. A minute later he hands me the receipt and says bye. I was confused I was waiting for him to give me the total to ask if I wanted to use the card on file or give me any other information. I had a AAA card that I wanted to be applied for a discount and I did not want to credit card on file charged I needed to use my debit card. I have no opportunity to communicate that since he had his earphones in and didn't communicate any part of the process. Again terrible customer service. I told him I didn't want that card charged so he grabbed the receipt from me and started typing away. DONT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY 1. I was given a reservation pickup time of 6:00 PM, July 25th, 2018. I decided to look up what time the Hertz Office (555 E. Ocean Blvd. Long Beach, CA 90802) was closing in case I would be late and found that the office in fact closes at 6:00 PM. The same time I would be picking up my car. I called the office to inform them of the dilemma and was told by employee Adrianne, that if no one was in the lobby at 6:00, they would be closing the door Even though I had just alerted her that I was on my way. I guess her leaving on time was more important than the satisfaction of the customer whose pickup time says 6:00 PM. I asked her what if I make it at 6:01 and the doors are closed what will happen to my reservation. She said I could try and pick it up tomorrow but my rates may or may not be the same. Fortunately, I made it the office at 6:59. I assumed that it would be quite simple to pickup the rental car as I had already prepaid for the reservation online, but JR at the counter felt differently. He told me because I was 24 I would not be able to pay for the reservation with my debit card (though I had already paid for it on the debit card), he told me they would refund me the money back to the card which would take 5-7 business days and I would need to come up with another $222 on a credit card. I did not have my credit card on me as no one had alerted me BEFOREHAND that I would need to pay with a different card than the one I had already paid with. They told me they could no longer help me at their branch BECAUSE THEY ARE CLOSED AT 6:00 PM. 2. I called the corporate number and spoke to someone by the name of Adelin. I needed him to switch my reservation to the Airport location that closes at 10:00 PM. Adelin told me that because he would need to cancel my current reservation and make me a new one that I would have to pay new rates at a total of $375. That's nearly $150 more than the reservation I already made. I asked him if they could keep the $222 they had already charged me on the debit card and allow me to pay the rest and incidentals on credit they said, NO, all the charges needed to be on the same card. I asked if I could have a relative call and put on their credit card they said, NO, it has to be a primary driver. I was so upset I needed a time to think, I told Adelin I needed confirmation that if i called back to cancel this reservation that I would not be charged a cancellation fee because of the company's fault in this. Adelin assured me that I would NOT be charged a cancellation fee should I call back to cancel. I asked Adelin for a confirmation number that this conversation in fact did happen, I was told by Adelin and Supervisor Blake (ID #8094) that Hertz does not give out ticket numbers but everything is recorded in their system and i should have no problem. 3. After awhile of confusing and misleading conversations with your company's representatives who would not work with me to fix the situation in anyway, I was fed up and decided to cancel the reservation. I spoke to a women whose name I unfortunately don't remember but was pretty helpful and understanding. She told me that because I was cancelling the reservation on the day of I would be charged a cancellation fee at the cost of the full reservation, $222. I asked her can't you see the previous conversations that I've had with your representatives, she said she could not, which let me know I had been lied to by the previous representatives and none of the information was being recorded. She told me she would submit my issue to the customer service representatives and that it could 7-10 business days for them to respond. I was incredibly upset because my whole 5 day trip had been cancelled because of this one issue. After asking her for any type of proof of this conversation, like an email that she had in fact submitted my case for refund, She again told me they do not give out ticket #'s but the information was being recorded 4. I called again to speak to customer relations, whom the woman had told me she submitted my refund too. I told him I would just like to confirm the request was put into your department and I would like to see about expediting the process. He put me on hold to speak with his supervisor (Michael #642012) after a few minutes he came back and told me he would submit my file as a "CARE CASE" in which I would receive a prepaid refund which could take up to 3-5 business days. I asked him if this was similar to the request the woman I ad spoken to before had put in. He said he wasnt sure. I asked him, well cant you see if she's put in a request? He said he wouldnt be able to see, only his supervisor. I said ok, so when you just spoke to your supervisor and I was on hold for a few minutes, had he seen the request for the refund? First The car had Spiders. Not 1 or 2 but like 6 or 7. car wasn't clean. Front end alignment was bad and car shakes at 65mph. Headlight were so far out of alignment I was pulled over by highway patrol for driving with brights on (which were not on). No windshield washer fluid. And several interior trim pieces kept falling off. When I turned car in and told agent she then wanted to charge me $200 to clean car, which was cleaner than I got it!!. NEVER use Hertz EVER again.
