Must say the easiest car rental to date. Needed to get a loaner Car/Truck to replace mine (which was damaged by an inconsiderate/careless driver). While my truck was in the shop for the much needed repairs, I was connected, through State Farm Insurance, to get a loaner vehicle. Started out with a Nissan Versa and when State Farm made the decision that it was the other parties fault, was able to upgrade to a Nissan Titan, at no cost to me. Made driving in this time more tolerable. All the staff at Hertz were courteous, respectful, and extremely helpful. I am singling out, Ethan Gallegos, who exemplified, true professionalism. Picked me up and then they paid for my return to my home, via Lyft (First time using Lyft). Highly recommend Hertz and especially the Palatine spot. Cheers! read more

We do not travel but maybe 1-2 family vacations a year. This company has over charged, and now left us stranded without a car on our trip! We confirmed this reservation 2 times and now they say they cannot rent us a car!?!? Will not tell us why??? Went straight to National, and not a single problem! Rented a car for pickup at PDX expecting the same Gold level service I've always had. Unfortunately, it was the farthest from a quality customer experience. The car they provided had a broken clean & sanitized sticker seal. When I inquired about what it meant to accept a car in that condition, one of the desk associates said "don't worry about it, the car is fine." I reminded him we're in a global pandemic so he begrudgingly offered me a compact car in exchange of the midsize I had rented. I was stuck with the original car as I had 3 adults and luggage to accommodate. After we leave the underground parking garage, in the light, notice the entire back seat of grey cloth interior is stained and worn. Hertz, why did you allow this car to be rentable? I rented a car from here in July for a road trip. I've done business with Hertz before at this location several times before and never had any issues but after this last time, I'll be taking my business elsewhere. I book my rentals online and always know what I'll be getting charged. I had it booked and when I was picking it up, the lady worker at the counter (her name was Jennifer I believe) asked me if I wanted several different options to add-on to my rental, for an extra charge of course. I clearly said NO when she started asking and told her word for word, "I don't need any extras, I'll just take it as I booked it". It was partly my mistake for trusting her and not fully reading the receipt I was given. The car I booked was about $100 and the extra insurance she slapped onto it was $50! Fast forward to when I returned the car. I was expecting my card to be charged only $100 but was surprised when they said my total was $150. There was a different worker there when I returned it, who offered no help to my problem. I told him that there was no way I would choose to add-on a $50 insurance on the rental which would make it 50% more expensive. Plus if I did want that, I could've added it on myself when I booked it online. I booked it online and was shown one price then after returning the car, my bill was higher. Felt like a total scam and I'm not sure how they can even legally do this. As further insult, I told him that I was positive I said NO to all the extras (as I always have in the past when renting at this location), to which he said "you might've said no but she must've heard yes". Really? She misheard my "no" to be a "yes"? That's beyond ridiculous and I won't even go there. He said there was nothing he could do to take off the charges, which left me to have to deal with the credit card company to get my money back. Then Hertz sent me email survey which is standard every time after a rental. I put bad ratings on that survey and wrote a detailed account of what happened, to which I never received any response to. I'll give it a 2 star rating instead of 1 because I've rented here 6-7 times before and never ended up with a surprise charge before, but this was my last time renting here. Did not receive a phone call because they "did not have my number" turned out it had two zeros in front of the number so they really didn't even try. I really wish Total Collision would've told me to go to Enterprise. Had the worst experience. Manager was rude. Didn't have my car ready. Getting ahold of them on the phone was even a pain. Go to a different location or different company. Whole experience was a giant headache. Said I could leave the car at the auto shop. They don't tell you it costs 35 bucks for them to pick it up. Enterprise doesn't charge you for that service. Also got charged 40 bucks a day extra for LDW. Never agreed to that. Place will try to take advantage of you any way possible. Great service & always polite. I've rented from the Palatine location many times and I've always had a good experience. The cars are very clean, sanitized and usually newer models. They're right on Dundee Road so it's very easy to get in and out. It's a pretty busy location so try to reserve your car as early as possible. I'm usually in and out in 5 min so they're very efficient. The current manager, Edgar, is very accommodating, helpful, and polite. I would definitely recommend renting from the Palatine location. read more

I get a phone call today, from a Brett, and he tells me that I'm being charged $300 for smoking in the car. How dare you, accuse me of smoking in the car. I never smoked in it, and I DONT SMOKE. Predatory is the best word I can use in describing this Hertz rental location in Palatine, IL. I rented a car online through Expedia using my debit card - it was a prepaid car rental. I did not elect ANY extras. My family was driving across country. Here is a break-down of my experience: 1) I called to confirm my reservation, Brett at the Palatine office said only had a mid-size SUV and it was basically the same as the standard SUV I rented. When we pushed back - he stated under his breath "I don't care..." then admitted he might have a standard SUV available for us - but couldn't hold any vehicles. 2) When I went in to pick up my car on July 6, 2019: - Brett refused us a vehicle since I used a debit card to pay Expedia; - Then Brett told me that they would have to run a credit check on me because I used a debit card; - Then Brett told me that I needed to provide them with a credit card because they had have a credit card on file. - After giving him my credit card Brett told me that he couldn't rent to me unless I was a member of a professional organization like AARP or AAA - I told them I was but didn't have my card with me. They (Brett and Ryan) told me that unless I gave them my AARP card I couldn't get a vehicle. - We asked for a manager and was told Jen wasn't there or available. Brett and Ryan refused to provide us with her last name or a phone number. To date we have not gotten either of those things. - We drove home, printed a temporary AARP card and when we got back to Palatine Brett told us that I would need to cancel my reservation through Expedia and re-book through Hertz 1-800. - When we called the 1-800 number the people in India didn't understand why we would need to re-book since we had a prepaid reservation already. - Brett took his phone outside saying that he needed to call his manager, Jen. Then came in and told me he needed a credit card so that he could charge me a $200 deposit - that would be refunded. So I did. - I called Expedia and they said there should be no other charges since I prepaid and offered to stay on the phone until we got a vehicle. - Brett asked my husband for his drivers license since he was over 25, and a licensed driver. He tried to up-sell us to have my husband be a 2nd driver at $13.50 per day - which we declined. - Brett said since we were AARP members there would be no charge to have my husband be a 2nd driver. We told him if it was free that was fine. - He asked my husband to sign a receipt - then told us that "made a mistake" and charged us $152 on my credit card for the 2nd driver and couldn't fix it - his manager, Jen would need to do it. 3) Before we left the state on our trip I received alerts from my credit card that Hertz had charged me $152.50 twice along with a $200 deposit. I wish I would have read these reviews before I rented my car. If i could rate lower I would. Reserved a car online, offered an upgrade at the counter. I agreed to the upgrade for an additional $17/day making my totla approx $50/day. I called the day my car was due to extend the rental and was told that the only way I could receive my agreed upon upgrade charge was to breing the car back and re-rent it. The rate for the extended days would be $80/day. Told to call the 800 number to discuss. Called the 800 number and was told it had to be handled at the center I rented the car. When I returned the car I was charged my rental amount plus $80/day upgrade PLUS a fee for keeping the car longer. Wait-didn't I call to extend the rental? Why am I being charged? Completely dishonest and a rip off. The manager, Jennifer wouldn't even talk to me, communicated via phone with the employee. I will be taking all my future rental needs to Enterprise, located across the street. DO NOT under any circumstances rent from the Palatine, IL location. Try the Enterprise dealer. Worst customer service!! I booked my reservation online yesterday. I got confirmation that car will be ready at 7.30a.m. When I left in the morning to pick my car, I received the call from "rude" gentleman. The first thing he mentioned me that we have no car available for you. I told him that I had to reach on time to attend the business meeting and I can not be late. I reached to hertz and no - hi, hello or sorry. We do not have any car available for you. If we give get any cancellation then I might give you car. I personally felt that he does not want me there at all. I have much more better experience with enterprise so finally I gave a call to nearest enterprise. They picked me up on time but these people did not give damn about my presence there. Hertz has great customer service but not this place. Avoid this place for any car rental. read more

DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY. EVER. UNSAFE CARS THAT AREN'T CHECKED FIRST. Literally the most unsafe and frustrating rental company ever worked with. We rented a 2018 Ford Escape with a whopping 44,000 miles on it, (ironic for a rental). Oil change sticker in the window said it wasn't due until 48,000 miles. A few hundred miles into our trip the light came on saying it needed one. It being Sunday the location was closed as well as Memorial Day it was impossible to contact the location. We called the 1800 customer service number and asked if we could swap cars because it was unsafe to drive. The transmission was failing, the car wouldn't accelerate, the brakes were chugging, the gears were skipping. Anything else? They told us we wouldn't be charged for a swap out AS WELL AS not having to pay the over a thousand dollar "drop fee" for dropping it off in Oregon versus driving back to Chicago where we originally got it. It's THEIR fault for lending us an unsafe car for us to drive thousands of miles across country (which we told them numerous times). We turn in the car in Portland, Oregon and we literally SAW enterprise staff take it in the garage for a car wash and then lend it to someone else. We were disgusted. We called Schaumburg location again and told them how upset we were and how we weren't paying a drop fee when the car was not drive-able. After 15 minutes of arguing they dropped the fee and ate it, following by stating we'd be paying a total of $576 for the weekly rental. We were charged $600 hours later. Do not rent from this bullshit "family" company. Their morals are garbage and they lie and give out unsafe cars that aren't even checked by a mechanic before lending to someone else. Stay away from this location and if possible, do not rent car from Hertz! I took my friend to return his rental car to this location, there was only one person there who seemed like new, maybe the very first day on the job, no idea what he was doing and he kept calling his manager for directions, also distracted with talking to other customers the same time, so the return process took forever to complete. The worst thing happened after the return. Two days later my friend noticed that Hertz kept charging him a whopping $117 per day, looked like he still rented the car. Since he was in a hurry to go to airport, he left all the documents to me to clean up the mess. When I called the customer service, they refused to talk to me after learning that I was not the driver, even I told her that he was on the way to China and did not speak English so i tried to help. I am disabled and live with a family member. I called on a Fri. Night to reserve a car for Sat. Morning. We take a taxi to Hertz, taxi leaves, and we begin the rental process. When its time to pay, we run into a problem. My father is renting the car in his name, but I'm paying for it on my debit card b/c my father has $0.00 in his account, however the smug Hertz employee informs us that the renters drivers license name must match the debit card name. So now im stranded at Hertz unable to rent, and the employee is rud, unhelpful, and in my biased opinion a jerk. So i pay for another taxi to go to the bank, transfer funds to my father's account, and taxi back to Hertz. We go through the rental process again, and keep in mind its been 90min since i first arrived. The jerk takes our info, we pay for the car, hes about to hand us the keys, when he now says he ran a credit check on my dads debit card and did not pass, and refuses to rent us the car after all the back and forth. Now I've never heard of a credit check on a debit card before in my life, and the employee literally smiled in my face and said sorry, but i still can't rent you the car. I just rented a car through Enterprise last month, and no credit check was ever required, and now that i think of it, ive never had any credit check performed when trying to rent a car in my entire life. So i wasted almost 3 hours, 3 taxi cab fares, and the employee offered no help whatsoever. He was wearing a face mask, but it seemed like he was smiling underneath it and enjoying my misery. He also had one of those faces you just want to punch, at least thats how i felt at the time. I will never use Hertz for the rest of my life, and am determined to tell people i know this story if they are ever in the need for renting a car, and hopefully they will stay away from Hertz. BEYOND UPSET!! My Wife was hit in our car. While it was being fix Hertz rented us a car. Insurance is supposed to cover all expenses. Hertz charged my wife's credit card about $700. First, this car was dirty when we got it and had a rotten food smell and a moist smoking smell after a day of rain. They said there's a $300 charge for smoking. My wife is pregnant she doesn't smoke. We called Hertz in Palatine at Arlington Toyota and told the rude gentleman who answered the phone about the situation. He said he would look up her information and call us right back. Two full hours later we call back, he claims he couldn't find our information but then he typed my wife's name in and it oh it pops up! We asked to speak to his manager in which they were not allowed to give out a direct line to them, so now we have been waiting for another hour and counting for the manager to call us back. How is this legal? Hertz employees are supposed to smell smoke, witness the driver smoking, or find ashes within the vehicle. After we smelled the rotten food smell and moist cigarette smell the next day after it rained, I detailed it myself to get the smell out because we were going to be using this car for quite some time. In fact something similar happened to us the last time we had to rent a car from Hertz. I guess all I can do is continue to wait and wait and wait some more. I'm curious to see how this shake down is going to play out, so I will update you when I know what's what. I've only used hurts three times and that was because that's who my insurance uses. I would NEVER rent a car from Hertz on my own. Since we have one car and my wife travels to see her family in Wisconsin sometimes, we rent from Enterprise, and every single time we've used them it has been a five star rating. We are most definitely disputing this charge. After my wife just got done talking to someone else from customer service, she was told that if a smoker smokes outside of the car and then gets in that the smoke that was lingering around you getting into the fabric of your clothes can transfer into the fabric of the car. I smoke, but always smoke outside and was never in the car enough for the smell of smoke to transfer in The cars fabric. This is absolutely ridiculous. And again my wife is pregnant she doesn't smoke, and was never a smoker in her life. I really wonder how often they get away with doing this to people. I think this is sad and despicable that they have to go to these links just to get a few hundred dollars out of people that don't have it. Absolutely despicable!
