I've had Het Say on my radar for a while and I finally got to try it. My friend and I ordered the pork rib rice plate, the Champa chicken curry noodle soup, the pate chaud and also one of the cookies. Everything we tried was absolutely delicious. The owners are very nice and they are quite lovely. The pork ribs were fall off the bone and their fish sauce went perfectly well with the ribs and rice. The chicken curry noodle soup had a really good flavor and it was very comforting and you can definitely taste the love in the soup. The cookie reminds me of like a Vietnamese version of a granola bar and it was simple yet pleasant. I also like the pate chaud but I wished it was a little bit more warmer and crispy but overall I cannot wait to come back and try their other dishes. I'm usually nearby on Saturdays and always looking for a good place to eat at. I actually found this place via Youtube first and when I saw how close it was to my doctor's office, I thought I would try the intriguing menu. We ordered the banh mi, the curry noodle soup, the socola cookie and a vietnamese coffee to go. The coffee hit the spot for me, the perfect strength and sweetness. I feel like it's harder to find this good of balance these days. As I'm not a big fan of fudge type cookies, I didn't like the socola so much, but my partner did. The curry noodle soup was tasty, reminded me of a Cambodian or Burmese style coconut curry soup, and the chicken was very tender. The banh mi for me, while I understood what they were going for, did not hit for me as much. There was shredded chicken mixed with pickled peppers and I believe shallots. The bread was nice and toasty and crunchy, but the filling felt a little dry. Overall, the dishes were on the pricier side, but you could tell the ingredients were fresh and also how much love and care went into the dishes. On top of that, I appreciated that most of the containers they used were compostable. The owners were really nice and extremely friendly, and besides the road side seating, there were also a few concrete benches nearby as well. This place deserves so much more. I have been wanting to try this place since I moved here from Santa Barbra. There menu is quite different from want you expect from a Vietnamese restaurant. They are definitely a gem and true to every bite. I loved the way they didn't do just a traditional banh mi but their own version like the dipped banh mi and bone broth. The bread really stood out for me. Crispy exterior and soft and chewy in the inside. It really compliments the broth for dipping. The sandwich itself was very good and very filling, great for sharing. They had an assortment of other dishes like the sweet sticky rice & wild mushrooms. Little pastries and house drinks as well. The service was really nice and came out in a beautiful tray which was perfect to take amazing pictures of their food. Really smart actually. Het Say is a food trailer with popups at various farmer's markets in the area. I decided to try them out after seeing pictures of the food on Instagram and really wanted to try their banh xeo. The menu rotates weekly so I wasn't able to try it, so I opted to try the iced coffee, chicken congee (comes with salad) and the pandan waffle. I placed my order online since there was a long line at the farmer's market for a weekend morning, but we waited 20 minutes before checking in with them and turns out they weren't even looking at online orders. Then we proceeded to wait another 20 minutes for the order. The operation seems quite disorganized; if you're not going to check online orders, why have it up in the first place? The chicken congee, which tastes like it was made from chicken broth, was a good pairing with the refreshing salad, but I wish the congee was a bit thicker. I watched them make the coffee and it was a giant chunk of ice with 1/3 cup of liquid in a small cup. It was good, but definitely expensive. The pandan waffle is a no-go. I couldn't taste pandan and it was bland; the only flavor was from the banana in the middle. I always like supporting popups, but for the long wait, small portions, and expensive prices, the food here is not quite worth it. Would give this place a 2.5/5 stars, rounding up to a 3. read more

I don't normally review farmer market vendors but, this place gets one today. When I order a dish then immediately order the same dish for more that's something. The crab and chicken rolls were so flavorful and fresh. The lettuce to wrap the roll in was from other local growers and the pickled carrots and cabbage we perfectly crunchy. Great job guys! The only minor flub is that I don't remember seeing or getting the cracklings unless it was because the chicken skin changed form since I ate it about a week later I picked it up. This under-the-radar gem is a stunner with some of the best high-quality Vietnamese cooking in the South Bay. It's pricy, sure, but the quality of the ingredients suggests you're getting a steal. I had been once before (early on in the pandemic, when they operated out of their garage). The team is now working out of a food truck near Valley Med, with menus posted every week (and available for pre-order, though walk-ups are also accommodated). I had the Banh Mi, which is often viewed as a cheaper eat. It cost $15, but was among the best sandwiches I've had this year (my only con was the bread). But the aromatic mix of flavors had me repeatedly just "mmm" and "aaaa" as I stuffed my face. There's so much ambition here... and it really is that good. Their cookies are out of this world. And along with Lion Dance Cafe, my two favorite discoveries during the pandemic. They have a food truck at the SJ Rose Garden, but it's better to pre-order for pick-up there because they do run out of things. They have a rotating menu of items so its fun to check out what they have each week. ---- Also going through the pandemic has made me more thoughtful about how I do and do not support the local food community. I can only take one bite before having to take a cookie break Braised pork banh mi - I like that the meat is "saucy" compared to most banh mi that I have. Something different. I'd say this is competitive with the best banh mi in the bay, but not absolute best. Wish it had more veggies. Coconut sticky rice with rice wafer - I kinda thought it would be more sweet than it was, but it's quite savory! Loved the contrast, really fun to eat. Savory sticky rice - loved the contrast of flavors and texture. I haven't tried anything like this air dried sausage. Big peppercorns made a fun bite. Banh Xeo - the star dish, probably my favorite banh xeo I've tried Stateside. Great crunchiness, and excellent filling. I think I liked the mushroom filling _more_ than the shrimp/pork! On SF Gate's Top 25 Restaurants list (as of January 2021). I was really excited to see a pop up included in SF Gate's new Top 25 Restaurants list, especially since they are located in San Jose. I thought their food was very unique, but sadly, my experience was more a miss this time than a hit (sorry!!). You can follow them on IG, or set a reminder to place your order on their website. For Wednesday pickup, the menu is available on Monday afternoon of that week. For Sunday pickup, the menu is available on Wednesday afternoon of that week. Both pick up and delivery options (within a 15 mile radius) are available. Pick up times are: 11:30am-1pm on Wednesdays and Sundays. Free delivery for orders over $30! Since I didn't place my order until Saturday, they were already sold out of 2 out of their 3 entrée options. They seem to rotate their dishes frequently, so make sure you order quickly if you see a dish you want to try! The ordering process was super easy, but I didn't receive any updates after the confirmation email. I followed the instructions in the email, and my order was ready at the confirmed time. It's a bit tricky to find them, since they only have a tiny standing sign to mark where they are. You have to look for the bright green gate in front of the townhouses (across from the school), and they have a chair/table set up facing the street (Lucretia Avenue). It's our first time eating here and we are in love ! The liver pate combo is mind-blowing, sausage has a very distinct flavor that makes you want to keep eating. The lamb curry is creamy and rich and coconuty. We also got the baked flan which is served with Vietnamese coffee shaved ice and toffee candy piece, topped with something like coconut cotton candy, perfect combo ! Came here our first time on Sunday 11/3/18. When we entered, we were immediately greeted and then we got to pick out a table of our choice. There aren't a bunch of tables but seating was well planned and nothing seemed over-crowded in terms of tables/chairs. We were served a glass bottle of cold water that had an herbal infusion which made it extremely refreshing - during our meal we finished a bottle and were brought a second immediately. My wife ordered chao hau (oyster congee) and I ordered the "bahn mi." I think there was some confusion as I ended up with the ca ri ga Massaman. Looking at the curry, I decided that it looked great and committed to it. The curry was so rich and savory with so many layers of flavor from the chicken, coconut cream, shiitake, krill, peanut, curry, and spices. On top of that, the chicken was cooked to tenderness perfection. My guess is that this is probably made from a higher-quality chicken and a lot of love. The dish came out super temperature hot, which I love. My wife's chao hau came super loaded with chao quay - the consistency and texture was perfection. There were three large oysters in the chao, and enough sate chili to cause a light sweat. This dish also came out piping hot - just how good should be. We also bought some fresh lap xuong and some air-dried sausages to go. I found Het Say through a friend and was very happy to see that they're at the Rose Garden Farmer's market on Saturdays! My bf and I were so excited, we ordered the night before for an 11AM pick-up at the farmers market. We got the banh mi thit kho tau (Chinese style braised pork in a banh mi), banh bo (honeycomb style rice cake w/ curry sauce on the side), and the me da (tamarind over ice w/ peanuts and cacao nibs). The banh mi was *chefs kiss*. It is not your traditional banh mi with mayo, pate, cilantro, onions, carrots, daiko, jalapeno. NO, it's packed with tender juice meat, the perfect amount of spice, and some pieces of hardboiled egg. They slice it in half which is a great portion to share and it includes a nice pickled cucumber on the side which has the perfect crunch and acidity to cut through the fattiness and salt of the pork. My BF loved the curry that came with the banh bo, and the banh bo itself was the perfect consistency - soft yet firm with a nice spongey texture. I enjoyed it because the banh bo is a little sweet and slightly tangy while the curry had the spices with lemongrass to give it a nice punch. Lastly, the tamarind over ice was different to me. I've never heard or seen it as an option (not even in Vietnam, but maybe I'm looking in all the wrong places), but my bf was super excited to try. Tamarind is a key base ingredient (or at least in my moms) canh chua (sweet and sour soup) so the taste of the tamarind reminded me of canh chua, and I loved it. A little tangy, a little savory, but still sweet in a way. The cacao nibs and peanuts added a nice texture to every bite, and I think I would order this again on a nice hot summer day as it was super refreshing after eating the banh mi and banh bo. The only bad I would honestly give it is the watermelon coffee. My opinion on that is it tastes like diluted Coffee mixed with watermelon juice. I don't know who will mix those 2 but if you're feeling adventurous. Try it for yourself! Other than the food. I got there at my pickup time. Rushing there because I got 2 texts reminding me. The chicken with sticky rice was richly flavored with tamarind paste providing a tangy counterpunch. Their shrimp roll was the best I've ever had. Eating all of this made me feel as if a chef was cooking just for me. It's the perfect treat for a lazy Sunday lunch or a great mid-week reward if you just can't wait for the weekend. Awesome little spot for folks looking to get some food from south Vietnam. They have a revolving menu, which is really cool, and it keeps things fresh from meal to meal. I definitely would recommend checking it out on a weekend when looking for something new and supporting the local community. read more

I discovered this little gem at the tailend of summer, and have been able to enjoy the summer and autumn seasons of their rotating menu. My favorite offerings in restaurant are their Xiu Mai from the summer menu (fresh, juicy kurabuta pork in a summery tomato sauce) and their fresh lap xuong banh mi (house made Chinese-style sausage except it's fresh and not dried, on an airy French baguette - I usually only like Viet baguettes unless I'm in Paris) from their winter menu. But we also really enjoy a couple of their take home offerings, one being packages of their fresh lap xuong (they also have packages air dried ones) and their palm sugar banh bo (muah muah muah! ). I order the banh bo at least a day ahead...never had anything like these before. Been meaning to leave a review for a while now. Fusion food is mostly a miss, but once in a blue moon we're blessed with people who understand and cook authentic cuisine as a backbone and THEN add new inspiration on top of that. Hien and Hieu are a couple of those people. They know Vietnamese Mekong cuisine and fuse it with American South, American Cajun, and other Southeast Asian cuisines. We've enjoyed their Saturday stall at the Rose Garden Farmer's Market twice as well as the Sunday takeaway. The pandam coconut sticky rice is incredible as was everything else. Order anything on the menu, you won't be disappointed. read more
