Hibachi box is exactly what you're looking for if you're craving hibachi experience without the usual sit in table show. The place is small, but it's clean. They seem to really promote being sanitary as there is a sink right next to the fountain soda. Options are pretty good- steak, shrimp, chicken, and salmon. The salmon is a little thin and the steak isn't filet, but the both are still very good. You have to pay extra if you need more sauce. There was an option for takeout on EatStreet- I think it isn't there anymore which is disappointing because I ordered delivery twice and wanted to continue to do that. read more

I have been hearing good things about Hibachi Box for a long time...so I finally checked it out on a Monday evening. Parking can be a hassle if you are not familiar with the VCU area, so keep that in mind. I would suggest ordering online since there are no eat-in options here. I had the Chicken hibachi bowl. Default options include fried rice, noodles, hibachi veggies and a salad on the side for $9.99. The portion size is great for the price, it would be tough to finish a whole bowl in one sitting. Uh....how have I not visit this place sooner?! I saw this one time while I was visiting, but didn't get the chance to try it until a coworker suggested this place. She said that she always get deliver here so it MUST BE good right??? haha, she was right! I got to try this for the first time today and I don't regret it. The menu is pretty easy (you get to choose your source of protein) and you get to pick the sauce(s) to dip the protein in with your order. I ordered the hibachi box, which was split - half fried rice and half noodles, layered with sauteed diced onions, zucchinni and your choice of protein. You also get to pick sauces to dip your protein - I ended up choosing the ginger sauce and hot spicy mustard. After ordering, we were given a small side of salad and a number to sit down and wait for our number to be called (sort of like Noodles and Co). The taste of it was pretty awesome. It was already cooked in teriyaki sauce so it has the "asian" flavor/taste. I really enjoyed both the ginger and hot spicy mustard sauce that came on the side. (As a recommendation, do NOT order another side of teriyaki sauce...it was indeed - quoted from my friend- "too much teryaki" hahahaha). I thought that I would've been able to eat the whole thing, but I ended up only being able to eat half and eating the second half for dinner. No complains there. -Good overall flavor -Fun sauce options, 2 included with meal -Great value. Around $9 for a choice of meat, both noodles and rice, a salad, and two sauces. Can't beat that, especially considering the amount of food. -Extra condiments i.e. soy sauce, hot sauce, a spicy type of oil. Cons: -Our meals were not hot. Lukewarm at best which was a bummer. -Greasy. While there was good flavor, it definitely had a texture of pre-made ingredients rather than it being made-to-order. The meat and noodles were drenched in a shiny, glossy sauce which looked good but it really saturated everything and was very greasy. It made the meal feel really heavy and blah. -Not many veggies Overall, decent. Even the atmosphere is catered to a modern, woodsy design that any college student would find appealing. The hibachi consisted of grilled onions, zucchini, fried rice, and noodles! The portions are a nice and it's packed nicely if you need to take it to go! I did, however, tried the coconut milk drink they have and it was not what I was expecting. The shrimp, veggies, fried rice, and yum yum sauce are delicious as ever. 10/10 would recommend. The noodles aren't as good as they used to be. They were my favorite component of the meal because they were super saucy and flavorful but now they just taste like a rubbery mess of disappointment. (For lack of a better description.) As for the salad...I usually don't even touch it. I throw it away when I think nobody is looking. But I know I am not alone. I have actually witnessed other customers throwing away their untouched side salads on more than one occasion. Cons- For my personal taste I think it was too salty or too much soy sauce. I dislike warm/hot cucumber. I'm not a fan of the paper bowls as they did not hold up for long. You also get a side salad which is just your typical side salad with the ginger dressing. The steak was a perfect medium rare which was impressive. The veggies were great as well. The only thing I wasn't a huge fan of was the noodles. It was just too much starch for me and I like the rice much better than the noodles. I was able to walk right in and order but I was a bit confused on what came with the bowl. It turns out everything comes with it! I got the chicken, which is cooked in their teriyaki dip. It's then pilled on top of fried rice, noodles and veggies. It comes with two sauces and a salad. The salad they hand you first with a restaurant buzzer to alert you that food is ready. The salad is just chopped lettuce with a side of creamy ginger dressing. It's a very mild dressing, more so than other places. I then waited for my food. I waited 30min. It turns out I waited much longer than I should have because my buzzer number was entered into their system wrong so they spent 10min call out number one while I'm sitting there with number 15. I finally went up there and they figured it out and gave me extra sauce so I was happy. The food was good. I expected it to be more flavorful. It just wasn't very exciting. Last night I finally got to try the long-awaited Hibachi Box! The place was packed, but our food came out very quickly--before I finished my salad (though I will say I am a pretty slow eater). The prices are very reasonable, especially for how much food you get: a small salad with tasty dressing, a ton of rice and noodles, a good amount of vegetables, and a generous amount of protein. More specifically, about the food: though I was pleasantly surprised that they included both rice and noodles, I would have liked the option to choose one or the other, or both. The vegetables were well seasoned, and the yum yum sauce was just as good as the one at a sit-down hibachi restaurant. I didn't like the spicy mustard sauce, because it tasted like it had a lot of wasabi in it, which I'm not a fan of. I also tried my boyfriend's ginger sauce, which we both thought was good. Next time, I'll definitely try the white sauce, as well. I was most impressed with the salmon--it was high quality and flavorful, especially considering the price. On top of the food, it's such a well-designed and located restaurant. With VCU creeping further and further West, Hibachi Box snagged the right location at just the right time. With that, the design is modern, but very functional. I was impressed with the wood panels, the bright colors, the sink right next to the drink machine, and the elevated Sriracha and soy sauce holders. My only hope is that they begin to offer a tofu option in the future.
