Last night I finally got to try the long-awaited Hibachi Box! The place was packed, but our food came out very quickly--before I finished my salad (though I will say I am a pretty slow eater). The prices are very reasonable, especially for how much food you get: a small salad with tasty dressing, a ton of rice and noodles, a good amount of vegetables, and a generous amount of protein. More specifically, about the food: though I was pleasantly surprised that they included both rice and noodles, I would have liked the option to choose one or the other, or both. The vegetables were well seasoned, and the yum yum sauce was just as good as the one at a sit-down hibachi restaurant. I didn't like the spicy mustard sauce, because it tasted like it had a lot of wasabi in it, which I'm not a fan of. I also tried my boyfriend's ginger sauce, which we both thought was good. Next time, I'll definitely try the white sauce, as well. I was most impressed with the salmon--it was high quality and flavorful, especially considering the price. On top of the food, it's such a well-designed and located restaurant. With VCU creeping further and further West, Hibachi Box snagged the right location at just the right time. With that, the design is modern, but very functional. I was impressed with the wood panels, the bright colors, the sink right next to the drink machine, and the elevated Sriracha and soy sauce holders. My only hope is that they begin to offer a tofu option in the future. This was quick, fresh, and absolutely delicious! I for the Steak Hibachi box and it was cooked to perfection, on my opinion. They asked me what I didn't want in it and the person taking my order was very nice and helpful because this was the first time I have been here. The atmosphere was very laid back. Each meal is around $9-$13-more than reasonable, especially when you taste the quality and see the quantity. Have you ever ordered teriyaki salmon from a fusion or chain restaurant? Usually it's dry (let's be honest, almost burnt) and never seasoned well. But at hibachi box, I've ordered the salmon bento almost every time and it's always freshly cooked, juicy, and so freaking flavorful. And when you order a bento, it comes with a small ginger salad, and the bento itself includes noodles, stir-fried veggies, and rice (white or fried). You can also add in extras like a fried egg. Didn't I tell you this place was a bang for your buck place? But thankfully, it doesn't LOOK like a bang for your buck place. The vibe is definitely on the trendy side with Japanese pop culture items and memorabilia like a collection of Domo figurines encased in a display inside the wall. Considering the quality of food and how the business is setup....this is like your greasy guilty pleasure where you expect pretty decent food because they are selling hibachi style food but it's cooked and served like your local stir fry joint Don't expect the quality of food you would typically find at your hibachi restaurant. You get such a large portion for the price in comparison to other local places that offer similar food. I will say though, their Hibachi Box is pretty carb heavy. Noodles, rice, a few sauteed veggies and whatever your choice of protein is. I've had both steak and chicken and all I can say is double yum! What stinks is the location, there is no parking! I usually get the steak hibachi box but will probably start getting the chicken. Steak tends to be way overcooked- chicken is more tender in the boxes. For the price you literally cannot beat the amount of food that you get. This is definitely not high quality products used in the food but if you're in the mood for carbs and sauce, definitely order Hibachi box to go. You can almost compare it to a fancy take out, like a step above Chinese take out but a TINY less greasy. It's my to-go for take out. I've eaten there once, it's too small and the fumes will make you smell like food if you know what I mean. I have noticed tho that overtime sanitary and cleanliness is less maintained which is why I don't eat inside the restaurant. I was drawn in to this place from the smell, and I stayed for the food. Everything I've had here is delicious. It reminds me of this place I used to go in Charlottesville back in the day, it's great stuff. It's also a great deal, for $10 I basically got two meals. Really quality stuff. This place has a 'healthy choice' image to it but in fact it is not. Built-your-own hibachi boxes are basically the only option they offer. The box has a mix of grilled vegetables, noodles, fried rice and the choice of protein. It's comes with a small side of iceberg lettuce simple salad. You get to choose the exotic sounding but very high in sodium sauces. The vegetables are too greasy to enjoy and they are overpowered by the other previous flavors used on the same grill so if you are looking for a strictly vegan choice, I would recommend you go somewhere else. The noodles were nicely cooked and just the right amount al dente although I cannot say the same for the rice. The place looks cute but smells too much. I usually go to Hibachi Box frequently to eat after b-ball games or for hibachi cravings. I decided to order food online to avoid waiting. I order a meal with 2 proteins and extra vegetables. After arriving at home,I notice chicken was missing out of my meal and no extra vegetables (no big deal). I called and told them that my meal was missing chicken. I ask them to just refund the missing chicken price,which was a couple of dollars (If I had lived closer I would have came back). I was told by an employee on the phone to take pictures of my meal and it will be reviewed. Wait, what!!! I have to go through all that trouble due to your employees messing up my order? I ask for a refund for my missing protein,not the meal. Needless to say,this situation left a bad taste with me.I haven't been back since because customer service is very important to me. read more

Watch out for a "The SPRITE Police", Witnessed a lady that worked there go up to a customer and said you need to pay for your drink since she saw her put "SPRITE" in her water cup. The customer told her the water was coming out funny and it wasn't even clear and they (lady which worked) there literally made dump out "SPRITE "!! I mean I can understand if it was beer, but $.01 for "SPRITE " GHOH!! Even as a customer dining in, I was like WOW!!!!You don't even put real Lo-Mein noddles in the BOX, you use linguine noddles and you go up to customers harassing them over SPRITE. I don't like how rude the staff was and how mildew-like smell of dirty base-boards and lack of bleach the establishment had. EAT at your own risk!! Man oh man. Hibachi Box is KILLER. As a person who loves Asian food (especially hibachi steak), these place is FAN-TAS-TIC. Honestly, for the price, you can't beat it. I got the hibachi steak, which comes with a ginger salad, rice AND noodles(!) and some hibachi vegetables for $8. The entree comes with your choice of two sauces (I chose the yum yum and ginger sauces) and had a Coke to wash it all down. All of their meats and veggies are locally sourced, and they have also partnered with local vegan favorite Goatacado to create some vegan-friendly menu options. Since this place is near a couple other popular places I've noticed it first in the building stages. So just passing it I always told myself I have to go when this place opens! I didn't hear anything about the grand opening and just happened to be at the right place at the right time! The boyfriend and I were actually gonna go some place else when we noticed it was finally open. We decided to check out their menu and see what this place was about. So they have their traditional box, which you can choose your protein (chicken, steak, shrimp) and then they have two other options if you don't want the original. I got the hibachi box with chicken. To my surprise it comes with fried rice, noodles, and vegetables. You also get to pick two sauces. I chose the yum yum sauce and the ginger sauce. Also another surprise is you get a small salad! One the boyfriend and I ordered the price was $18 for the both of us. Once we got all of our food it was a lot! The only down side was that I didn't get a lot of chicken but honestly the rice, noodles and veggie portion made up for that. My boyfriend said he got a lot of steak, so I might get that next time. Got to say this is going to be a favorite spot. To start... they get it! Service, atmosphere and food. When you walk in the cook may ask you what are you getting to get you started. Then you pay, have a seat and wait for your name to be called . Nice, smooth and easy. While I was waiting, my ears were treated to the sound of ole school hip hop, Beatnuts and Wu Tang blessed the speakers and had me not wanting to leave but keep bobbing my head to the music. All along the walls are Star Wars figurines. For half the money of the high end hibachi spots this place is just as good. Parking is bad, but worth going around the block a few times if need be. Really great, affordable hibachi-style food. I am a vegetarian, and I am a little disappointed that they do not offer veggie protein in the form of tofu, seitan, or other mock-meat. I hope they will add vegetarian proteins in the future. Besides that, the portions are generous and the food is well prepared. The salad dressing is especially killer. I really enjoy the modern look and feel of the restaurant's interior, and the staff are all very genuine and pleasant. I had heard of Hibachi Box and had it on a list to try. However, our recent dining experience was totally unplanned! Edo's was closed when we tried to grab dinner and so being extremely hungry, we popped next door to Hibachi Box. I'm so glad we did! It might have become a box on a list that never got checked due to our infrequent visits to this area around VCU. The food was great! We both did a hibachi box, chicken for me and steak for my husband. They include the meat, veggies rice and noodles + two sauces. I would probably do without the noodles next time and double up on veggies. The noodles were good just the idea was weird for me. The yumyum and white sauces were both really good. Ok, so I NORMALLY give 5 stars, the food was excellent, the over the phone service was for the MOST part very very good, the third (yes third) call the female that answered was a bit confused and had to keep interrupting the original man who took our call the first time for the most basic question "When will our food be ready for pick up?" Therein lies why they didn't get the 5th star. We live 7 miles away literally, and they will not deliver to us. There is little to no parking at their location. Let me preface this by saying my favorite hibachi place in Richmond is Sakura on Broad street. I tried hibachi box last week because I always pass by the sign and I was in the mood for some. It's really cute inside, modern and pretty spacious considering its location. The price is very moderate as well. I ordered the chicken hibachi which came with a salad (no soup even though the sign said soup) and I would say it was mediocre at best. The lack of vegetables really threw me off. The only veggies were zucchini and onions and there were so many onions. There was also noodles in the hibachi which threw me completely off. The taste wasn't bad. The portions can be "small" to some people but honestly, it's never bothered me much. I like that it's right on campus and easy to get to. What I like most about this place is that when you get to choose your choice in meat and then it comes with noodles, rice, veggies, and a salad on the side. Also, I really prefer my steak to be rare and they never complain when I ask if they can make it that way. They have a few additional sauces like sriracha and chili oil at the tables which I also like since i like my food spicy. The owner and his brother treated us to a soft opening to try the menu. It was the first night cooking this menu for people and to be upfront the food was on the house. We have been checking in waiting for them to open and just happened to walk in and get offered to try the food. We know the owner from another restaurant. The traditional salad was very good and had traditional Japanese ginger dressing. Lettuce was fresh and the shredded carrot was still crisp. We had the vegetable gyoza which is topped with a soy/teriyaki sauce, we were told to top lightly with the house made chili oil. The dumpling was crisp on the bottom and tender on the top. The vegetables gave the gyoza a nice textural contrast. The sauce they topped it with went really well with the chili oil and it was not overly spicy just a slightly warm afterward. The hibachi comes with a protein, rice, noodles, and vegetables. Choices of protein are chicken, steak, vegetable, shrimp, and salmon. We had the an order of the chicken and an order of the salmon. Both were cooked and seasoned well. The salmon was cooked perfectly and was very moist. The marinade on the salmon was plenty flavorful and the dipping sauces just added to it. We tried the ginger sauce, the spicy mustard sauce, the yum yum, and for now let's call it Pepe's white sauce. Of the sauces I enjoyed the mustard and the Pepe's sauce the most but none were bad. The rice was served sticky style with fried egg in the rice. The noodles were cooked perfectly and not soggy or slimy. The hibachi vegetables were delicious and contained grilled onion and zucchini mixed in with the noodles. Portions were perfect with plenty of food in the box. We were going to a basketball game, and most of the restaurants were slammed, so we checked this place out. You get a lot of food, and that's not including the free salad that comes with it. My biggest complaint is the food tasted extremely salty. But aside from the salt, everything else was fine. The meat and veggies were very good, and below the rice, you will find noodles. But the best way to describe this place is a quick hibachi restaurant with the show. If I'm looking for something different for lunch, I will be back. read more

I LOVE hibachi box. It brings me back to the times where I was lucky enough to grab a dinner at Sakura where the chefs cook in front of you. The food tastes exactly like that if not better. You get a lot of food for what you pay for. It's $10 for a salad, and a huge box with noodles, rice, your choice of meat, and veggies. They also let you choose two sauces to go with your meal. I recommend the ginger sauce and the yum yum sauce. I have trouble finishing the entire box and I usually can pile down some food. Had a wonderful experience tonight at Hibachi Box. The staff was super friendly and explained everything on the menu for us first-timers. The vibe of the place is hip and there was a sink built right into the area where you get your utensils (and the soap was some high quality stuff)! I was pleasantly surprised by how cheap it was considering all the food you get. Salad, veggies, noodles, AND rice??? Couldn't finish mine, so it'll last another meal! Had the salmon hibachi which wasn't overcooked to my surprise but had the perfect texture! The melon ginger drink was also fresh and free refills didn't hurt either. I was also given some candies on the way out (probably not a routine thing, just the staff being extra nice-- end of the day and all) and I left with a smile on my face! Delicious, fast, and affordable. Stopped in with coworkers during lunch and got the shrimp. The vegetables (zucchini and onion) were cooked to perfection and the yum yum sauce was yummy, as expected. I can't wait to try other proteins and sauces! The decor inside is modern but there is not a ton of seating. I wouldn't count on a table being available during peak hours. Ordering could not be more simple...just choose a protein and any 2 sauces. Seems like it would be great for a group getting takeout. I ordered Hibachi Box the other night and was pleased with the food quality and substance. The box includes rice, noodles, veggies, and a choice of meat (chicken, steak, shrimp, salmon). You are also given a side salad and have the option of choosing two sauces. The yum yum sauce was good, similar to other Asian restaurants. The white sauce was my favorite, it is deceivingly spicy! If you are a fan of onions, like me, you will enjoy the veggies- the veggies include lots of onion and some zucchini. The noodles are on the bland side, but you can mix them in the sauces to liven them up. I think it is exciting to have a place like this in Richmond, no longer do you have to hit up the Asian buffet to get some fresh, inexpensive hibachi. read more
