Its weird, some reviews claim the food is amazing but it tasted like many other normal sushi spots we have been to. We tried a variety of things, including the salmon belly sashimi (which was pretty good), the yellowtail with jalepenos (which was just ok) and the shrimp with soy casing (perhaps would be better if we ate at the restaurant - we did pick up) and a few other things were just ok. Several people I trust have called Hibino one of the best Japanese spots in the city, and so I came in with high expectations for my meal. This is never a good thing. I was particularly eager to try the Beef Kakuni; it has been widely praised, and let's be honest, Kakuni? That sounds awesome. I'm naming my kid Kakuni. Hibino is located on a quiet corner, decorated sparingly, and the menu changes daily...all about the food. As it should be. They offer numerous small plates (obanzai) at a good price ($4), and the entrees can be ordered a la carte, or as a set (including rice, soup and the chef's choice of obanzai). Our scarily smiley waitress (I was terrified when she asked me why I was so serious) brought us a little chalkboard listing the day's obanzai. I liked the sound of two: fried horse mackerel with a nice sauce, and shitake mushrooms and asparagus with a garlic chutney of some sort. We also ordered the Beef Kakuni set, and since my date felt like sushi: a spicy tuna roll and a shrimp tempura roll. The two obanzai and my miso soup arrived first. All three were tasty, but sadly, I felt as though I could've made either obanzai without much trouble. I tried not to be disappointed, and I just geared up for my Beef Kakuni. Much to my dismay, it was REALLY fatty. (Now I fear Kakuni D. will be the posterboy for childhood obesity.) The sweet soy broth was nice, and it was laid over homemade tofu which wasn't bad at all. If I loved tofu, I'm sure I would've deemed it heavenly. My accompanying obanzai was a salmon and chive omelette, but it unfortunately tasted more like a bland quiche. Thanks to some careful yelping prior to my maiden voyage to Cobble Hill last night, Sunshine and I ate well at Hibino. We sampled widely: Japanese potato salad, sunomono salad (two of the three obanzai* on offer), hirosu (fried tofu in broth), hamachi salad, spicy tuna salad and green tea ice cream for dessert. The potato salad was an incredible standout among a meal where all of the dishes were good. It was creamy, though not the result of mayonnaise, and studded with carrots, corn, sugar snap peas and had an addictive savory Tonkatsu-like sauce atop it. By far my favorite sushi spot in Brooklyn and I can go as far as to say even Manhattan!!! It's operated by Japanese men and women who have clearly brought back the beauty and culture of Japanese cuisine. I haven't had such good sushi since I have been in Tokyo about a year or so ago. Usually there is a long wait, so I recommend getting there right at opening to get a spot. It gets crowded and busy pretty quickly. The specials are always delicious but our go-to are the fresh rolls. Eel avocado, yellowtail/jalapeño, spicy tuna and shrimp tempura...all 5 star choices!! This is the most authentic Japanese restaurant in Cobble Hill. That being said it is already ahead of the game. The other so-called Japanese restaurants in the area are Chinese or Korean run and have pretty much the same standard fare. It's the homey atmosphere and obanzai selections that make this place special. The miso salmon zuke, grilled perfectly with an obanzai add-on of daikon and pork belly, was the right amount of food and flavor. The Hibino sushi plate of 7 pieces and a Kyoto futomaki were very fresh and oishii. The scallop was especially smooth and sweet and the Kyoto futomaki which had eel, shrimp, tuna, tobiko, avocado and cucumber and yuzu mayonnaise was a nice departure from the standard California roll in most sushi combos. The lighter fare gave us room for dessert which consisted of their signature soy milk pudding served in a miniature glass milk bottle which was not too sweet but still satisfying and a substantial Japanese dorayaki ice cream sandwich. Meh. Womp. At the recommendation of my authentically Japanese friend, a group of us walked over to Atlantic Avenue and Henry Street for a sushi lunch. Hidden and kept away from the hustle and bustle of Montague Street and Atlantic Avenue, I was hoping for a great dining experience that catered to those in cobble hill who are "in the know." So we get there at 1:20, right during the peak lunch rush but we were seated within a couple of minutes. The restaurant is small so you really shouldn't come in with anything larger than a party of four. After a lengthy wait to order, my friends each ordered the two roll combination for $10 while I stuck with the $10 obento box. I opted for the grilled pork sausage as my entree (The offerings were grilled salmon collar, pork gyoza, shumai and the sausage.) The daily obanzai (think of it as a side dish) was black seaweed with cucumber, and that comes with the obento, which already includes rice, a small salad and miso soup. Okay the miso soup was fantastic. I have never had above average miso soup before. I've been to Japanese restaurants that cost $10 to $40 to $150. I have never had above average miso soup. I don't know what it was. It was smoky and had real silk tofu and not the diced cubes of tofu you may be used to having. And that's where my experience ended. The grilled pork sausage was grilled pork sausage. Not very dissimilar to what you might have at a friends BBQ. The only difference being that the skin was still snappy, and it's always satisfying to hear that snap when you bite into a piece of sausage. The rice was rice, the salad was salad and the black seaweed was black seaweed. One or two dollars cheaper than the sushi offerings that line Montague Street, it really wasn't worth the walk from Brooklyn Law School. Mitoushi on Atlantic and Nanatori on Montague continue to be my two favorite Japanese spots in the area. Oh well. Always great to try new things! I heart Hibino. Its my new favorite sushi restaurant in Brooklyn. The fish is extremely fresh and as my husband said, he hasn't had toro this good since Japan. The toro (which was a special of the day) literally melted in our mouths. I'm salivating as we speak. The sushi rice was also the perfect temperature and extremely delicate and I think they make their soy sauce in house. For starters we tried the tofu and the short rib beef. The tofu is as delectable as all of the reviewers said but the presentation was a bit awkward. I wish it was in a bowl rather than a mini jug. I thought the short rib was dry and overcooked but my husband loved it. However everyone comes here for the sushi and Hibino really delivers. We had the Salmon and Anago Hako sushi rolls along with the Spicy tuna and Yellowtail Jalapeño rolls. EVERYTHING was very fresh and delicious. My favorite was hands down the Salmon Hako and I can't wait to go back and try the Tuna one. One tip - they run out of the daily Obanzai quickly. We arrived at 9:30pm on a Friday night and every one was gone so make sure you get there early! read more

Bit disappointed as this place was recommended by my Japanese friend. I got the eel avocado roll, it was really just okay, tasted the same as the ones from Korean deli. I also tried beef kakuni, one of the more popular entree. The portion was big. It just did not hit the spot, I would say it was okay (again.) I'm not sure if it is just me or this place is overrated. Hibino is an excellent example of authentic, local Japanese restaurant, and if you happen to visit, you'll be very happy. I lived in Japan for 4 years and one thing that struck me when I came back to NYC was how stylized and American-ized Japanese restaurants are in the city. Actually, most of them are not run my actual Japanese people. So when coming to Hibino, you might get the idea that it isn't authentic because it's different from Japanese restaurants you've been too. However, nothing could be further from the truth. From the style, decor, and food, everything reminded me of a standard izakaya back in Japan. We had the Agedashi Tofu, Tonkatsu and two sushi rolls. Everything was excellent, it's clear to see that Hibino uses fresh ingredients and prepares everything in house. The Tonkatsu reminded me exactly of the dish I had many a day in Japan and the sushi was simple and delicious, unlike some places that have rolls with 7-10 ingredients. The rolls at Hibino focus on making be fish the main flavor of the roll rather than some gimmicks. So, should you go to Hibino? If you have some experience with authentic, local Japanese flare, then yes. If you are open to something new even though you've eaten Japanese before? Then absolutely! If you love those faux Japanese restaurants with rolls that have 7-20 ingredient and the menu is made up based on TV's version of what Japanese food is? Then maybe Hibino is not for you. Came here on a Saturday night with a few friends last weekend. The wait wasn't too long given that we showed up at 8pm (only about 30 minutes), and the ambiance was great, but the food was very average for Japanese food in NY. We ordered two obanzai to start with: one was a pork meat sauce with noodles, and the other was a sort of tofu gratin. The tofu dish was very unusual and didn't taste or seem like tofu at all. It wasn't bad, just not something I'm used to. The noodles dish had a good and simple flavor. It tasted like something my mom would make! We ordered various combinations of sushi, which were again fine but not incredible. The temperature of the rice was off and the presentation could have been better. I went to Hibino for Valentine's Day dinner with the boyfriend and it was pretty good. The housemade tofu everyone raves about here is okay. I've had better at places like Zenkichi. The tofu here is a bit grainer and less smooth than what I'm used to. The sushi was a-okay. There wasn't anything particularly special about it. The salmon did melt in my mouth - very buttery. The highlight of the night was the Ume-Shu Plum Wine that is only sold to restaurants. It was so sweet and delicious! I also really enjoyed the special roll of the day - a Negi Toro roll. The toro melted in my mouth - I barely had to chew! Dessert was also quite good. We opted for the soy milk pudding and the green tea ice cream sandwich. Both were a nice finish to our meal. Overall I enjoyed my meal at Hibino but it's quite a trek for me. I don't know if I'll be back anytime soon but the wine here will definitely make me think about Hibino every once in a while. Ps. We waited longer than what we were told was the norm (due to a party just sitting on their check) and were given a free app due to this. Very classy of them to do that for us! The avocado roll was definately in my top two avocado roll experiences. The roll that was the squash was to die for!! I can't even explain how good this roll tasted, it was just THAT good. Conveniently located a few doors down from Henry Public, Hibino was the second stop on our Brooklyn food/drink tour. We received some strange looks when we stated we just wanted to order the house-made tofu. Our thought was if we were truly going to eat our way through a variety of Brooklyn gems, then we needed to take it easy at each stop. The tofu didn't disappoint. Like EN in Manhattan, they offer both both warm and cold varieties. The jars in which the tofu was served were so cute. I wanted to take a set home to use as vases, cocktail glasses, pencil holders and whatever else I could think of. However, when I asked if they were for sale, I was told no. Hibino had a nice neighborhood feel, complete with a warm and friendly staff. If it weren't for trying to save room for stop number three, I would have ordered a number of items on the menu. Awesome place that my hubby found for our Brooklyn date night! We decided on this place last minute and tried calling in to make reservations (for a Thurs night). Sadly, they did not take any reservations, but told us we should not have a problem getting seated. We got there around 7pm and we were able to be seated right away. They have daily specials that is displayed on a board. The setup of the restaurant gives a pretty chill vibe. We started with the seaweed and field green salad. I liked the variation in the seaweed salad. The field green salad was also yummy we both thought the crispy potato chips were a nice touch. We then shared 3 rolls (spicy tuna roll, salmon avocado, yellow tail jalapeño) and salmon hako sushi with sides of spicy mayo. Our favs were he spicy tuna roll and salmon hako sushi. The sushi didn't taste fishy at all. The salmon hako had a very pleasant taste and the miso was a nice sweet touch. We then had red bean ice cream for dessert which was also very creamy and delicious. The server also gave complementary hot soy bean tea at the end of our meal. The hubby wasn't too crazy about it, but i enjoyed it! The menu is a bit pricey, but it's a nice place to go to for a date night with your significant other or just to catch up with a friend. This is a very homey Japanese eatery with a nice selection of comforting simple Japanese fare and sushi. The agedashi tofu is incredible, soft and flavorful in a way that makes you feel warm inside. The sushi here is very good, creative and fresh tasting. The daily side dishes that change are fun as well. When we went they had asparagus wrapped in bacon and a pork loin rolled and fried. Sushi set was the standout- it had great variety and I was really impressed by the quality of the fish. I loved the citrusy mayo on the side - definitely unique. Hibino is a great addition to Cobble Hill, and I think everyone agrees. Pass by on any given night and the restaurant is filled with families, couples, and other people from the neighborhood. Anyone who dines here MUST sample the homemade tofu, which is served either cold or warm (I recommend having it warm) in cute little glass jars. It's served with a shoyu-based sauce and is simply divine - light with an incredibly fresh flavor I've never tasted before. And it's only available at dinnertime (I looked for it when had lunch, and it doesn't make an appearance on the take-out menu). Hibino specializes in obanzai, which are Kyoto-style side dishes or small plates. The $4 obanzai offerings change daily, and you can see the offerings for the day on the restaurant's blog. It seems to serve 3 kinds at dinner, 1 at lunch, and each obanzai I've is interesting, creative and tasty. I'm in love with the beef kakuni, a braised short rib with an almost caramelized daikon radish. I tasted it and wanted to settle in for the day (even on a warm summer afternoon, it's just THAT comforting!) Hibino's sushi is wonderfully fresh. If you're someone who wants a crazy, wacky roll with 10 ingredients, I think you'll be out of luck here, as Hibino's sushi and sashimi offerings include just the simple and classic. You can, however, get interesting pressed sushi and a delicious "sushi salad" with an ingredient I just can't put my finger on. There are always lunchtime specials, and prices are very reasonable at dinner. Service is very quick and polite. (And frankly, one time it almost bordered on smothering. Can Japanese food be delightful? Are puppies far superior to kittens? (The answer is yes for both questions... cats suck.) Granted, it was only 20mins... From the looks of the crowd hovering the door upon my exit, getting there early is recommended. - Our Waitress She was equally lovely. Her dedication to refilling our water and sake glasses was to be admired. We shared the background stories of our respective heart-wrist tattoos over one refill. Lovely. -The Food First of all, OMG NOM. Second of all, it's really good. Our nosh list: Tuna Tataki Salad: Light and flavorful. Perfectly grilled tuna. Nuff' said. Beef Kakuni (Appetizer) : The braised short rib was crazy good. Meat so tender, I had to take a moment to collect myself. The accompanying chunk of tofu was also tasty. And fresh! The nerve of this place... Anago Hako Sushi: As I'm typing this review (three days after this meal, mind you), I'm just realizing that what I thought was Unagi was Anago... the mystery of why my friend would order two eel rolls has been solved. ANYWAY, obviously, this roll didn't consist of just a slab o' egg on rice. The egg was shredded. And yummy. There you go. Kyoto Style Futomaki: This was definitely my favorite of the two rolls we ordered. Not overwhelming but perfectly flavorful. (I apologize for using flavorful twice in a single review.) *Side note the sushi was rolled in an open face style which I did not expect, but I didn't complain. Although I am naturally risk averse, once in a while, I like to try a new restaurant. I had learned about Hibino thanks to Yelp. When S and I arrived, we learned first hand that finding parking in this area is a painstaking process. As we entered, the restaurant looked cozy and sleek with the mahogany (chocolate? doodoo brown?) tables and chairs. As we sat down, there was a small chalkboard with the daily specials, with a handful of the popular items crossed out. Fortunately, Hibino participated in "dine in brooklyn" and offered a pre-fix. We accepted and I requested an additional order of sashimi (I heard a snicker, but I was feeling ambitious). In the prefix, we received the fresh made warm, field green salad (consisting of mesclun, daikon, carrot, crispy potatoes with ginger dressing... it was salty), obanzai of the day - spaghetti (are you serious?) and pumpkin salad (potato salad with orange food coloring). I gave a double-take with the obanzai because Monsieur Chef Boyardee would have laughed out loud. Our entrees were good. The Kyoto style futomaki was a sushi roll with an array of items: tuna, shrimp, eel, avocado, cucumber, tamago, and tobiko. The beef kakuni was a braised short rib in a soy broth with scallion and daikon. Furthermore, the sashimi was of standard fare with exception to the squid; that was very impressive in taste and texture (it was a novel experience since I eat the yellow tail, salmon, toro, makerel, eel, etc regularly. Out of many desserts, we selected soy milk pudding and a fish (pancake) with red bean. These were fine but far from mind blowing desserts. Regardless of the volume, we completed the entire meal without having to be assisted outside via ambulance stretcher. Service was slow. The restaurant does not accept AMEX. Habino has been a neighbourhood classic for over a decade. I remember coming on the weekend for lunches with my family as a young child, and it has only continued into adulthood. The staff is fantastic and everyone if incredibly nice. Kenta is a phenomenal server! So, I actually found this place on Yelp. I have been searching for Yebisu beer since returning from Japan a couple of years ago, and I cannot find it anywhere in DC. Thinking that I might find some in NY, I found Hibino. Since I had been walking around all day in Manhattan, I was in prime shape for a beer, and the years of waiting and searching paid off. The Yebisu was as great as I remembered (although not the 100 yen-like price I remembered). The just as great news is that the food was also quite good. My boyfriend and I split the Kamo Salad, which was very similar to carapaccio, a favorite dish of mine. We also had a couple obanzai, including the lotus root, which was also good. For sushi we had the Spicy Scallop roll (wonderful) and the Yellow Tail Jalapeno roll (lethal). I like hot, but this was seriously ridiculous. I was actually in a lot of pain after eating just one roll. I would highly recommend telling them to go light on the pepper or just taking the pepper out once it arrives at the table. I don't think I have ever felt my esophagus go numb, but so it was. Dessert was soy milk pudding, which we ordered after seeing every table down the line next to us order it. This was a great decision. It was the perfect ending to a delicious meal. I also capped it off with a glass of plum sake (no ice needed), which was subtle, lovely, and not too sweet. I came here bc of the overall reviews.. However I was disappointed... The tuna salad was drenched- even each tuna had a glob of dressing. The edamame was WAY over salted. Staff was - ok not very helpful when asking for suggestions but really didn't have anything to suggest (not very many special) . The decor and layout was cozy and pleasant. Venue - small and cozy, with enough seating. If you don't have reservations, you may have to wait. Food - They have daily specials on the board. The main draw of Hibino is the Obanzai, but we did a little sampler to get an idea of how well they prepared different dishes. We started with the Agedashi Tofu, which is made with their homemade tofu. The pieces of tofu were perfectly prepared. The skin was like a brittle piece of silk and the center was smooth and tasty. The shredded daikon was fresh and plentiful. It came with two shitaki mushrooms that were as good as I've ever had. The dish was really masterfully done and a perfect way to start a meal. Next cam the seafood harumaki from the Obanzai menu. The outer layer was lightly fried, airy, and delicious. The shrimp and mushroom filling was also solid. At this point we made the switch to sashimi to see how the chef could handle raw fish. We kept it very simple: salmon, tuna (maguro as they had neither otoro nor chutoro), mackerel, and squid. I was damn shocked at how good the fish was. The slices could have been more delicate, but it was impressive considering that Hibino is not a straight sushi place. I would be comfortable going _just_ for the raw fish. The atmosphere strikes a good balance between sophistication and comfort. The staff is dynamite. Our waitress was attentive, helpful, and very funny. They now have sake and beer. We had a couple glasses of Sake from Fukui, way out on the west coast of Japan. It was really nice to see such a local brew. Pricing was fair. We paid $67 and change, which I thought was a damn solid deal. We were pretty amped when we left.
